The 59th Primetime Emmy Awards

Here’s the opening minutes of tonight’s Emmy telecast, including Ryan’s opening monologue. American Idol  lost Outstanding Directing For A Variety, Music Or Comedy Program to Tony Bennett: An American Classic in the first hour.

The show is pretty dull, but it’s not Ryan’s fault–he really hasn’t had that much screen time. There are a few good comedy bits though. I’ll be posting those in a bit.

Watch American Idol lose “Outstanding Reality-competition Program” to The Amazing Race. Again! Guess that Emmy-bait “Idol Gives Back” didn’t do the trick…completely. Before the presentation, Wayne Brady plays “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” with Rainn Wilson from The Office and Kanye West. Funny.

Ryan leaves the heavy comedy lifting to the professionals. Some of the best bits:

The montage the nominees put together for the “Outstanding Writing for A Variety, Music or Comedy Program” are always hilarious. This year  is no exception. The writing team from Late Night with Conan O’Brien won this year. Go Homeboy! Whoo hoo!

This Steve Carell bit with the cast of The Office is classic. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart won “Outstanding Variety Music Or Comedy Series.” Awesome.

Steven Colbert and Jon Stewart present the award for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.” Ricky Gervais wins for “Extras.” Ricky Gervais isn’t there to receive his award. Watch what happens next. Heh.

Lewis Black rants. Very Funny.
