Monday Morning Mediabase Update – Sep 6-13

Daughtry’s latest single “September” is aptly named as it’s making all kinds of impressions during that month. This week, it hits two milestones: top 5 on HAC and top 40 on Pop. The song is currently charting on 3 different formats. Their previous single shared the same sort of success and is still in the top 10 on AC.

Carrie’s new single “Mama’s Song” is hitting a chord as it reached top 30 on Country without breaking a sweat and it won’t go for adds until Monday (13th).

Chris Sligh’s “Only You Can Save” reached top 20 on CAC just in time for his album to be released on Tuesday.

  1. If Carrie can get Mama’s Song to number #1 on the country charts that would be a MASSIVE testament to her power and influence in the industry. No other artist could get that song to #1, so it will be interesting to watch.

  2. I agree with Gangreen about Mama’s Song. As for Elevator, good luck to Archie.

  3. I was in a entertainment store today. Mum bought a couple of DVDs and I bought two CDs: The Fame Monster (2CD) and second album from our local pop star. She went to the same primary and high school as me, she is only one year younger. She got her first record deal when she won singing competition on our national TV at the age of 17.

Kelly’s “All I Ever Wanted” was the only Idol CD I saw. I got my three copies of FYE and a copy of Just Like You from British Amazon.

  4. If Carrie can get Mama’s Song to number #1 on the country charts that would be a MASSIVE testament to her power and influence in the industry. No other artist could get that song to #1, so it will be interesting to watch.

I haven’t listened to country radio in years. What is it about Mama’s Song that makes it such an unlikely number one?

  5. Great update again for IIHY!! Was worried about top 40 because it lost 2 syndicated spins (1 OHP, 1 CK) from last week. Fantastic update for HAC!!

  6. Kirsten, are you sure about Archie’s SBL? People at Pulse are saying it’s out of the top 50 and it had a negative bullet yesterday. I don’t see it on the mediabase chart, I see Good Charlotte in that spot.

  7. Great news for Adam and IIHY – thanks as always for sharing, CindyM. Heard IIHY for the first time on KISS FM-Dallas yesterday afternoon – sounded great! Almost died when the dj said “And that’s Adam Lambert’s new song …”. My husband almost had a wreck when I screamed at the radio “It’s only been out since April!”.

  8. Archie is not #48, nor was he yesterday for the updated chart. He is #51:

I kind of disagree. I think this is the kind of single that will rise or fall depending on how people outside Carrie’s fanbase react to it. I don’t know which way that’ll go but I don’t think it’ll show her power and influence in the industry. The major things Mama’s Song has going for it is Carrie sounds so beautiful and sincere singing it, the idea of a daughter reassuring her mama on her wedding day isn’t completely overdone, and it fits her life perfectly right now. There was a tweet from a radio consultant who said he expected Mama’s Song to put Carrie back on top of the feedback charts but I don’t know if that was based on concrete numbers.

lucy: I haven’t listened to country radio in years. What is it about Mama’s Song that makes it such an unlikely number one?

It’s not really a catchy song, some of the lyrics are polarizing as far as whether fans think they’re good or not, and if you looked at single polls on Carrie’s FC site Mama’s Song was one of the least popular choices.

I would’ve rather Carrie released Look At Me, Someday When I Stop Loving You, or What Can I Say. But I don’t think Mama’s Song is a terrible choice even though it could break her #1 streak. It’s doing great now but with all the lead singles right ahead of it it will slow down and then the nailbiting will start.

  10. Here’s today’s Mediabase AC chart:

    6 6 DAUGHTRY Life After You 1439 1516 -77
    8 8 ADAM LAMBERT Whataya Want From Me 1010 998 12
    9 10 KRIS ALLEN Live Like We’re Dyin… 932 992 -60
    23 20 DAUGHTRY September 215 134 81
    22 23 JIM BRICKMAN Thank You 156 142 14

Matt’s song with Jim Brickman was passed by Daughtry and is down a chart position but is moving up in spins. The AC chart is shifting around quite a bit due to a number of new songs displacing older ones, so I think by the end of this week things will look very different. For example, Daughtry’s new song has about the same increase in spins as the decrease in spins for his older one. A bunch of other songs in the top 20 are dropping.

  11. I haven’t listened to country radio in years. What is it about Mama’s Song that makes it such an unlikely number one?

Carrie sings it beautifully as always; but IMO (and from other country fans I’ve heard) it is just a blah song, lyrics really so so and is just kind of there. Just not a great song, basically!

She has earned her airplay with her record, but IMO, Mama’s Song doesn’t deserve top 10. Loved Cowboy Cassanova and especially Temporary Home but Undo It and Mama’s Song are just meh for me.

  12. Thanks, windmills and indigobunting.

This is sort of the way Mama’s Song struck me, too, but I listen to pop-ish country so seldom I wasn’t sure whether I’m hearing what others would hear!

One way or another, it seems clear that if you’re a big name currently, you can get your worst stuff to the top of your chart, I guess. While some lesser name with genius work often can’t shove it past the 50th spot. Very strange. I wonder what the long-term effect is on your career of being so big that people ultimately end up being sort of forced to listen to a lot of your worst stuff right along with your best!

  13. So I am guessing that IIHY won’t be getting much for radio adds now unless it goes to AC?

  14. lucy: One way or another, it seems clear that if you’re a big name currently, you can get your worst stuff to the top of your chart, I guess.

I actually don’t think that’s as true as people might think. Being a big name is enough to get you a big start and it guarantees a certain amount of play on no matter what format. But on country everybody from Rascal Flatts to Taylor Swift to Sugarland has missed not just #1 but top 5 and even top-15 in the cases of RF and Sugarland in the last year. Mama’s Song could be that kind of song for Carrie and I think it’ll depend on how people react to it. I thought Undo It could be that kind of song but it got to #1 because it was big on downloads and it tested great in country radio’s core demo. I don’t think Mama’s Song will be anywhere near as big on downloads but IF DJs feel like their core listeners are relating to it then it’ll do fine. If not then it’ll peter out. As far as I’m concerned Carrie can get back to releasing the best songs off her album any time now.

Anyways there’ll be a little more craziness on the country charts this week because Keith Urban just sent out his new song which is a lead single for his new album due out Nov 16th. He could easily debut top 30 country with a full week of airplay. Edit: Speaking of people who aren’t releasing their best stuff. What are you doing Keith????

So I am guessing that IIHY won’t be getting much for radio adds now unless it goes to AC?

I maybe wrong but I think it could get a lot more HAC adds and a about 5-10 more top 40 adds possibly. (monitored) But don’t quote me. :-)

ETA oh I maybe somewhat right he got 1 Top 40 Add and 1 HAC Add. ;-) (on the otherhand WWFM never got the full amount of adds that were available on any format. Like AC WWFM had at most 68 adds while others have in the high 80’s shows how good that song really did. I think if it was on all the station possible on any format it may have gone #1 on HAC or AC. but It did very well so I’m happy) of course this is JMHO

  16. So I am guessing that IIHY won’t be getting much for radio adds now unless it goes to AC?

I maybe wrong but I think it could get a lot more HAC adds and a about 5-10 more top 40 adds possibly. (monitored) But don’t quote me.

There are quite a few more hot ac to still get. But other than a stray add here or there iihy is done with pop adds. there are only 14 monitored stations that have not added. Most of those are stations that will never add the song. Realistically there are maybe 2-4 pop stations that still could add.

I don’t think IIHY is going to make any sort of an impact on AC….it is just not that sort of a song — not an ac song at all. When its done with pop and hac it will be done.

  17. The CBS HAC stations have added IIHY early but the Top 40 ones don’t seem to add. Is it not a good fit for their Top 40 stations?

  18. I will be interested to see if AC stations start adding TT — that is a song that seems to fit that format. I can’t see AC stations adding IIHY — doesn’t fit the format at all, really. It should keep moving up the Hot AC chart though, what with the great updates it is getting in that format.

If SBL was #48 on published Pop chart, it would’ve likely been because other songs went recurrent.

Oh, and congrats to Mr. Daughtry for going Top 5on Hot AC and Top 40 on Pop

  19. I maybe wrong but I think it could get a lot more HAC adds and a about 5-10 more top 40 adds possibly. (monitored) But don’t quote me.

130 of the 144 monitored Top 40 stations have added IIHY. 54 of the 102 monitored HAC stations have. I agree it could logically get quite a few more HAC adds.

ETA: As a comparison, WWFM got a total of 134 Top 40 and 93 HAC monitored adds. It got 70 AC adds as well, but IIHY has none so far.

  20. Carrie is really the platinum standard for Idol. I think Kelly’s days on top of the Pop charts are over and Daughtry is doing okay but his songs don’t dominate his genre, like Carrie does. Stay healthy, Carrie. The Idol brand depends on it. ;)

  21. David wasn’t #48 on the published chart. He was #53 in the morning update, then two songs were purged so SBL ended up at #51 in the evening update.

  22. Carrie is really the platinum standard for Idol. I think Kelly’s days on top of the Pop charts are over and Daughtry is doing okay but his songs don’t dominate his genre, like Carrie does. Stay healthy, Carrie. The Idol brand depends on it.

I get the impression that Country is more accepting of AI contestants then other genres. Perhaps because AI is suppposed to be about the “All American” boy/girl next door making it big which seems to fit the wholesome image of the Country music scene? I don’t follow Country music so I may be wrong about that. Also Carrie is beautiful as well as being a terrific singer, so I don’t want to take that away from her. It’s just that there have been some terrific singers coming from idol who seek out careers in other genres, but they don’t seem to have the staying power or acceptance that Carrie seems to receive from Country.

How many idols have gone the Country route and how are they doing?

Carrie, Kellie, Bucky and Danny are the ones that pop into my head right now. I think Bo has switched to Country but I’m not sure what is up with that.

I can’t think of any others right now.

Not to mention more accepting than pop of people who have been around for a while and aren’t just the hot new thing.

  26. I get the impression that Country is more accepting of AI contestants then other genres.

I remember that being idea being challenged here by someone.. probably windmills? I think Idols get a backlash in country too.

  27. Yeah i can’t see IIHY going to AC just wasn’t sure about how many stations there was left in HAC and POP. Hopefully the HAC stations will keep adding him…I actually heard it on my local HAC station the other day. haha I never hear him on my radio

  29. girlygirl: I haven’t heard Mama’s Song. Does it have crossover potential?

Not even a little. I think that ship has sailed and Carrie isn’t going to chase it. She reiterated in this radio interview at the end of August that she won’t remix/remake her songs so pop will play them and she’s happy to just be country.

    tinawina:

undercooked: I get the impression that Country is more accepting of AI contestants then other genres.

I remember that being idea being challenged here by someone.. probably windmills? I think Idols get a backlash in country too.

Is the Idol success rate in country really that much better than the success rate in pop? Idol’s had 4 people get top 10 hits on the country format. But Carrie, Kellie, and Josh Gracin are the only ones in country music who’ve gotten up to a 2nd album with their original country labels out of all the Idols who have gone country and Carrie and Kellie are the only ones to get to a 3rd with their original country labels. The whole situation with Josh’s sophomore album was a MESS that led to him getting dropped even though he got another top 10 hit. Bucky did well with his debut but he’s labelless right now because Lyric Street went under and he hasn’t been able to get his sophomore album out. Nobody else from Idol has even scored a top 20 country hit yet.

My opinion is country got Idol fatigue after s5 and these days they don’t believe in its power anymore. It’s still possible to have a decent touring career because the live opportunities associated with country music are all over. Nashville still likes that you’ve got a fanbase coming off AI and that’s enough to give you a chance. But to make it long term in country coming off the show I think it’ll take more: it’ll take proving you’re really country and you’ve got some edge and some special chops to you. That’s why I think Casey’s got the most chance of anybody off AI since Kellie. But he has to deliver an album that’s raw, edgy, and the kind that’ll get some critical acclaim. No pressure ;)

  30. “If I Had You” by @adamlambert climbs 20-19 with a bullet, earns “Airpower” status on Adult Top 40 survey.

    What’s Airpower Status mean.

  31. DHunken, I had to look it up myself :) this is the definition I found:

Airpower status for Billboard: “Airpower” awards are issued to songs that appear on the top 20 of both the airplay and audience chart

I interpreted that to mean top 20 in both # of spins and audience impression. Looking at the charts, that’s not always the case. You can get songs with lots of spins, but those spins are in small markets and at off-peak times for listeners.

Anyway, that’s the definition I found.

  32. My opinion is country got Idol fatigue after s5 and these days they don’t believe in its power anymore

I actually think Idol fatigue set in for all genres after S5. They’ve had successes since then but nobody who’s come close to dominating their genre (not an easy feat).

I do think Casey has the best shot in awhile to do well in country. Not that I’m an expert in the kind of music (far from it).

  40. Hooray!! I finally heard IIHY on LA radio, KBIG 104.3 My FM. I was beginning to think that L.A. was going to snub it altogether. THANK YOU, KBIG.

I still don’t see it on the KISS 102.7 play list. It would fit well on there but I guess they think they’re too cool for Idol or something. They did play WWFM for what seemed like a very short time and it was a long time after other stations around the country had started playing it.

Looks like this International Tour is going to be jam packed with a lot of concerts and not much time off. But the main thing is to go to these countries and hopefully gain some new fans who will not only buy this album but hopefully buy the next one. I hope he’s going to be doing some talkshows while touring, because he’s gives great interviews.

I know Daughtry is also going to be touring internationally this fall, I hope some time next year that Cook will get a chance once his album comes out.
