Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Jul 21-27

Four milestones this Monday – across three formats.

Let’s start with the milestone-palooza on Country. Leading the charge are the Swon Brothers who finished third on the 4th season of The voice. There were treated as the also-rans on Blake’s team behind the winner who was also on his team. They didn’t even get a contract from The Voice affiliated label. No matter, they went top 15 this week on Country with “Later On”. Will they finally be the break out stars from that show?

Also, not winning, on Blake’s team and not on the official Voice label is RaeLynn. Her “God Made Girls” went top 50 on Country. Finally, not on Blake’s team, but married to him is Nashville Star’s Miranda Lambert who duets with Idol’s Carrie Underwood on “Somethin’ Bad” – somethin’s good because it went to 20 on Counry this week.

Not on Country, but he used to be and is now making in-roads in CCM, is Danny Gokey. He gets his first top

10 on CAC with “Hope in Front of Me”.

  1. This latest monday morning database update is brought to you by my latest jam, All About the Bass which debuted on HAC and achieved went from 40 to 33 on Pop this week. It’s also killing it on iTunes. It’s also kind of relevant to recent discussions on here (this is empowerment…not flashing endless skin) and she got signed by ex-XF judge LA Reid on the strength of this song. Plus I love the retro sound.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PCkvCPvDXk

  2. Rae Lynn is with Republic Nashville, which is the official label, sort of.

  3. She’s with Valory under Big Machine. Republic Nashville is their distributor. Big Machine is an Indie.

Of course Big Machine is Scott Borchetta who has been helping to push The Voice’s winners to Country. The guide is a mad chart ninja.

  4. Where did this girl come from? Three weeks ago I got an e-mail to a free download of her song, downloaded it and couldnt stop playing it and now its in the Top 5 on itunes. I’ve only heard her on the radio once, but I guess I missed her promo push. Damn shes awesome though.

  5. She’s been kicking around for a while. She’s been writing for a bunch of big names, but when this song started making the rounds, LA snapped her up. Apparently, lots of people wanted to sing it.

The song just seems to have hit a groove and ignited.

  6. Her original deal was withRepublic Nashville. Maybe they shifted her over. Danielle Bradbery’s “home” label is Big Machine. It’s all one big crazy family.

  7. Raeleynn is still on Republic’s site but is also on Big Machine’s site. Same for Cassedee Pope.

  8. Go Swon Bros! I am so happy for them! Can´t wait for their debut album.
I am actually glad they were signed by Arista Nashville instead of Republic, much better label and they have done great promo with their single so far.! Yay Top 15.. Awesome.

I heard their debut album will be out in the fall and maybe promoted at the CMA´s and The Voice too. Great guys and I love their music.
    Well deserved..

  9. She’s only 20 years old, so she can’t have been kicking around for too long :) According to wikipedia, she signed a music publishing deal shortly after she turned 18 (she’s been writing songs since she was 11) and has gotten cuts with other artists, the most prominent one probably being Rascal Flatts.

What’s really interesting to me is that she cites Trinidadian soca music as a major influence. Also Christina Aguilera, Frank Sinatra and 50’s style music. There’s a combination you probably don’t see too often!

She supposedly lives here in Nashville – I wonder if she ever does writer’s rounds :)

  10. All About That Bass is a catchy song but can we just keep this about singers that actually song on one of these shows and not those signed by any of the judges.

  11. Republic Nashville is a joint venture between Republic Records (New York) and Big Machine Records. Big Machine Label Group is comprised of Repubilc Nashville (where Cassadee Pope is signed), Big Machine (where Danielle Bradbery is signed), Valory (which is promoting RaeLynn’s single), and Dot Records (newly relaunched, currently promoting the hilariously on point single from debut act Maddie & Tae called ‘Girl In A Country Song’).

Danielle and RaeLynn were assigned to other labels within BMLG for promotion just so there wasn’t 1 promo team juggling 3 female Voice alums, but I’d describe this as all 3 ladies being on an official Voice label. RaeLynn was in development for a couple years, during which time she was signed to a publishing deal with Big Machine Publishing’s joint venture with Dr. Luke’s publishing company Prescription Songs. She also took voice lessons during that time.

    36 29 NOW COUNTRY 7 NOW 4,604 VARIOUS ARTISTS

  19. Hmm…Seems low for 5 Seconds of Summer. I thought I read they could reach 250,000. Looks like they’ll barely make 150,000. However their primary outlets might not have reported yet.

  20. As has been shown time and again with Idols on the HDD charts, you can’t base the final sales off partial reports. HDD reported last week 5SOS is expected to open with 200+K

  21. So why do other country people have 149 and Scotty only has 114? Seriously? Who/why are the stations holding out?

  22. Monitored Adds:

    AC:
One Direction (Story Of My Life) – 2
    HAC:
    Demi Lovato f.Cher Lloyd (Really Don’t Care) – 7
    Alex & Sierra (Scarecrow) – 6
Jacquie Lee (Broken Ones) – 2
    Christian AC:
Danny Gokey (Hope In Front Of Me) – 2
Colton Dixon (More Of You) – 1

  23. There could be any number of reasons. (1) the song still hasn’t cracked the T-30 on mediabase, which is one of the benchmarks sometimes used by stations for adding songs; (2) the song is not selling all that well; (3) his label is pushing other song(s) or artist(s) harder; (4) the song hasn’t gotten strong feedback from those station’s listeners; (5) the station may not have room on its playlist to add any songs. Etc etc etc.

Most artists don’t get every station on the mediabase reporting charts to add their song.

  24. 3 of the stations of haven’t added Scotty’s single are syndicated programming such as Westwood One & Clear Channel (CC). The majority of the other stations are from the Midwest & Southeastern US which has usually been the stations previously which has been slow to add his singles.

  25. Reason #1: This is very likely to be the case especially for those big stations. Reason #2: According to Pulse, Scotty’s sales are better than most of the artists charting in the #30-#40 range on Billboard & even the artists who are in the BB #20-#30. In fact, if you were basing it on sales, it would probably be an indicator for the label to push the song compared to others in the same range. Reason #3: His label (Mercury Nashville) is pushing Billy Currington’s current Top 10 hit & Kacey Musgraves new single which is currently #35 1 spot behind Scotty).

Reason 4: His feedback from listeners has been pretty good. He’s consistently in the Top 15 on Radiofeedback & Top 20 on Callouts. The single also had multiple weeks where it was in the Top 5 on surveys for the 18-35 age group. This is the age group that radio PD’s have stated in the past year they are concentrating on. Reason 5: Possible. Obviously, most stations are going to play the Top 10. A-listers with music out will be played, too. So the rest of the spots will be at the discretion of the radio PD’s.

  26. Thanks. I thought the song was selling well and he seems to be doing well touring. Hopefully radio will catch up one of these days.

  27. Lorde and Meghan are drawing heavily from Urban, but I don’t think that female Urban artists are the only ones getting slammed for showing too much skin. Pop is way worse, IMO. R&B does seem to be more about bringing the talent and solid songs, for female artists. For Pop, not showing skin is almost becoming the exception. Sadly.

The females in some male Urban videos, though? Yikes.

  28. The 50% refers to reporters, not sales. So iTunes is just one reporter, even if its sales represent a huge percentage of sales.

  29. An added station won’t necessarily play it and an unadded station may play it.

Aldean’s got 113 adds, but I bet every single station played it.
