James Durbin makes the most of his ‘Beautiful Disaster’

“The album title is me looking back on moments in my life that, at the time, maybe I wished had never happened,” says the 22-year-old singer. “But now, knowing what I’ve done and knowing where I am and who I am today, I can never change those things, because they made me who I am. So I look at those memories, once disasters, now as beauty.”

James co-wrote five of the songs on Beautiful Disaster, more writing credits than Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, last season’s two top Idol finishers, had combined on their debuts. Hearing that, James downplays his writing contributions.

‘X Factor’s’ Simon Cowell on Astro: ‘If He Hadn’t Sung, I Would Have Kicked Him Off’

“It was uncomfortable,” says Cowell during an interview aired on the Pepsi Live pre-show. “It’s one thing refusing to dance, it’s another to say, ‘I’m just not gonna sing.’ If he hadn’t sung, of course I would’ve kicked him off. I’m trying to help him.”

Did Melanie Amaro suppress her Virgin Islands accent? It was the cause of some debate, both in the X Factor green room, on Twitter, in the audience and beyond: where did Melanie Amaro’s island accent come from? “I was holding it back for way too long,” she says. “The tears, the accent, just being able to speak up felt good. The emotions came over me, the spirit of humbleness and being thankful. I just had to break out.” And did she ever. The once reserved contestant says she plans to “keep America guessing” as to what she’ll “sing and do.”

‘The X Factor’s’ Astro Talks Scandal, Admits He’s Worried About Going Home

“I don’t focus on the past. I’m one of the guys that focus on the future. I didn’t feel any pressure from last week….I just want people to forget the past. I apologized, I made a mistake…Tonight I had fun, and that’s all that matters,” he said.

But the 15-year-old MC did admit he was concerned that America might not forgive him for his bad behavior. “Honestly, I don’t know. I don’t think ‘America’ is going to forgive me, but I think Team Astro and the Astronauts will….I’m definitely worried, but it is what it is. If I end up in the bottom two and get sent home, I’ll handle it better than I did before.”
