Danny Gokey Eyeglasses?

You know how Danny Gokey has been telling everyone who’ll listen that he wants to sell his own line of eyeglasses?

So check this out:

3 Things Thursday - Sunglasses

Danny Gokey Eyeglasses as worn by Danny Gokey on American Idol. Designer eyeglasses include brands such as Armani, Gucci, Dolce Gabbana and much more. Percentage of all the proceeds on sales of Danny Gokey Eyeglasses go to support Danny Gokey’s charity – Sophia’s Heart Foundation.

Typically, an Idol would have to wait until his contract with 19 ended after the tour to go ahead with a private venture like this, but maybe they gave their blessing with 10% of the proceeds going to the Sophia’s Heart Foundation, the charity Danny started in memory of his wife…

Danny has lots of glasses, but he sure doesn’t mix it up style wise.   It kind of limits the line.   Good luck to him.   If he doesn’t get a recording contract, maybe he can turn into an eyeglass mogul…

  1. Good for Danny! 10 percent of the proceeds go to his charity, so maybe being a spokesman (who could sing the jingle ;-0) is the way to go. He can model them, too. Heh

  2. um wow. ok danny…

…well i guess i can’t think it’s stupid considering that 10% of the funds are going to Sophia’s Heart. not bad. do they mean the glasses he actually wore or the same models?

  3. 10%? Gosh, Danny, can you afford to give away that much? Guess my model for charity-related commercial enterprise is Newman’s Own, which donates all, as in 100%, of its after-tax revenues to charity. Granted, the Newmans have (had) ample income from other sources, so could afford to give it all away. But Gokey keeps telling us the purpose of the business is to fund Sophia’s Heart.

Just another example of the reality not quite matching his words.

  4. I’d buy a pair of Gokey reading glasses to read the Kradam fan fiction (see other thread) :rolleyes_tb:

Anyway, good for him. I think spending time working on this foundation will help him through his grieving process. And if the revenue from the eye wear biz gives him the free time to run the foundation, then I’m happy for him. I hope it works out.

  5. Danny does not decide how much Frames Direct will donate. They are a business not a charity. Basically they are doing him a favor with signing him up for this.

Danny DOES have control (presumably) over what happens to the funds he raises for his foundation.

Did I just stick up for Gokey? Must be the banana split I am eating putting me in a good mood ;)

That said, how memorable was he that I read this and all I could think of was “eh?”

  6. “Designer Eyewear worn by Danny Gokey and Lesbians”

I can say this because i am a lesbian. I see a lot of gay women wear his style of glasses including myself. It’s a demographic he should market towards. I’m just saying.

  7. OK….cynical me. First, until a charity proves that they are doing something with the money and it is up and running…no way Jose for me. Second, this sounds a lot like the Singing Bear promotion that Archie did a promo for last year. The retailer is still pocketing the major portion of the sales and is still providing a consumer related project and the 10% is totally a write off for them. I positively hate charitable donations that are part of consumer good sales unless the entire profit is going to the charity. It’s like the very over-priced Christmas wrap that is sold by elementary age kids to get something new for their school. Just come and ask me for money, if the cause is good and it is something I believe in, I will be first in line.

Sorry Danny, bless your heart but I ain’t buying.

  8. Nice. It looks like Danny is the first to get an endorsement deal. It’ll be interesting to see how marketable he is. If he sells a lot he will definitely get a contract somewhere, although I have a feeling he will anyways.

  9. Oh no…..just oh no! Why does this not sit too well with me……….sigh….Pix

  10. What a moron. I think anyone who intends to give to Danny’s charity should investigate it, and request financial information. You should always verify that a charity uses the bulk of their donated funds for the intended programs. And, since Danny’s doesn’t provide any real, substantial info on their web site, people should really request the financials before giving any of their money.

I see AI’s little logo in the corner so it must have been blessed by 19. Either that or they are getting a cease and desist letter right about now, lol.

  12. He should have some Gokey Croakies made up for those glasses. :)

  13. LOL I’m most amused that two of my favorite posters here have comments “Awww, I think it’s a nice thing” followed by “What a moron.” :lol_tb: SpenserJ has the edge for me with this one, sorry tinawina. ;-)

  14. I myself wouldn’t buy them and agree with those saying they don’t trust these kinds of things but its nice to see that he is getting something out of his AI run since there hasn’t been an announcement of any record deals. I hate to see anyone left out.

  15. I see AIà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s little logo in the corner so it must have been blessed by 19. Either that or they are getting a cease and desist letter right about now, lol.

It’s definitely blessed, or he wouldn’t be doing it. It’s just typically something like this wouldn’t go down from an Idol not signed by 19 until the tour was over.

  16. Ermm… okay. :blink_tb:

At least he gets to do something, because he’s sure not going to have a music career. That said, I definately won’t be purchasing and Danny Gokey Gear…

  17. that’s why i keep thinking that 19 is not going to sign him- since he’s already doing other stuff. I’m thinking that danny already knows this but is not allowed to say anything.

also, i keep reading on Scott’s twitter that he is in meetings so maybe he’s been let go already too? and didn’t someone mention he’s releasing his own independent album in july or something?

  18. isn’t he STILL under 19E management until September? That means that they MAY be getting a cut of this deal (their normal 50%?).

  19. I completely agree with the idea of checking a charity out before giving it money, but I suppose for Danny’s fans, this would be a minimal investment and give them a souvenir. You know how AI fans can be! These will probably sell out fairly quickly.

  20. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s definitely blessed, or he wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be doing it. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just typically something like this wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t go down from an Idol not signed by 19 until the tour was over.

I suspect anything any of them does while still under contract to 19 will put a little cash in the coffers. So, is the 10 percent taken after 19 gets their cut?

  21. I notice this this year they aren’t keeping contestants from opportunities due to not winning.

  22. LOL Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m most amused that two of my favorite posters here have comments à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Awww, I think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a nice thingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ followed by à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“What a moron.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ :lol_tb: SpenserJ has the edge for me with this one, sorry tinawina. ;-)

LMAO!!!! Its ok, there is no shame in losing out to a good ass-ripping. :laugh_tb:

  23. Yep I wear glasses, but my AI charitable contribution will be going to another copy or two of Cook’s “Permanent”. All proceeds to cancer research.

  24. SpenserJ has the edge for me with this one, sorry tinawina. ;-)

LOL – you can always count on me to take things to their lowest level.

I suspect they gave him an early okay on this, when they said “Okay Gokey, we were wrong about your front-runner status. America does not care about you, and we don’t think you can move units. So, we’ll go ahead and let you do your little glasses deal for now. After the tour, we’ll release you to obscurity and send you back to Pastor Escalade. Good luck.”

  25. I suspect they gave him an early okay on this, when they said à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Okay Gokey, we were wrong about your front-runner status. Damn that was harsh! But I can’t stop myself from laughing. Oh, the guilt. :lol_tb: :down_tb:

Poor Gokey. He just cant catch a break on the internets. Is it his fault that he’s just so damn snark worthy? Well, probably yes. But still.

  26. Kris Allen has three hits on Billboards Top100, Adam is on the cover of RollingStone, young child Allison gets a major recording deal…and Danny Gokey is selling glasses. My faith in justice is restored. All the world needs now for the stars to align and bring eternal happiness to all God’s creatures is Sarver doing a KFC commercial.

  27. Is it his fault that heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just so damn snark worthy? Well, probably yes. But still.

Oh, it’s definitely his fault. And,it’s damn fun too. I apologize for making you feel guilt, but harsh is my middle name baby! :devil_tb:

  28. but harsh is my middle name baby!

Well, yes, but on this thread you appear to have competition. Go sneezepaddle!

All the world needs now for the stars to align and bring eternal happiness to all Godà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s creatures is Sarver doing a KFC commercial.

Your turn Spenser “Harsh” J. I have faith in you. LOL

  29. I do believe Sophia’s Heart Foundation has made donations of new instruments to schools. There are many aspects to the foundation. I have checked them out.

I think it is great. This is something Danny has said he wants to do and he is moving forward with it. He has also said he wants to have an album about by January and I hope he is able to move forward with that also.

I have also noticed that all Scott twitters about is being in meetings. What’s up with all the meetings.

  30. Does this mean 19 isn’t going to sign Danny? If they don’t, that’s pretty wild considering the way the season started out. It was all Danny, Danny, Danny.

  31. I haven’t really been a Danny hater (although my son and I both thought he appeared smug on Idol) – especially once he was voted off – his interviews make me think he is socially awkward and maybe not that bad of a guy.

Anyway some of my work peeps LOVED him. Glad to see this endorsement as I don’t see him making it big in music. :)

I still shake my head wondering what TPTB saw in him and how he made it to 3rd place. I don’t hate his voice at all – but Adam, Allison and Kris were the whole packages to me – not Danny.

  32. All the world needs now for the stars to align and bring eternal happiness to all Godà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s creatures is Sarver doing a KFC commercial.

I don’t think KFC wants to lose customers. But maybe if he had a chicken costume on…..

  33. I do believe Sophiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Heart Foundation has made donations of new instruments to schools. There are many aspects to the foundation. I have checked them out.

What they give away is indicative of nothing, if you do not know how it relates to what they’ve collected. I could just start a charity for homeless people tomorrow, collect a million dollars. Then, tout my big blanket and toiletry giveaway that amounts to about $100,000 in merchandise. I’ve secretly kept $900,000 for myself, but everyone is so busy patting me on the back for my generous donation of mouthwash, that they have no idea. That’s why it is unwise to give to charities who do not have audited and published financial statements.

    Your turn Spenser à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Harshà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ J. I have faith in you. LOL

I appreciate your faith, but I’m just not sure I can top Sarver at the KFC. That’s a thought that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

I have also noticed that all Scott twitters about is being in meetings. Whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s up with all the meetings.

He’s just meeting with random strangers at Starbucks who are fucking with the blind guy and pretending to be record company A&R reps. (I’m aware I’m going straight to hell for that one – so no need to point it out LOL).

  34. I have also noticed that all Scott twitters about is being in meetings. Whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s up with all the meetings.

    Best. Bitchy. Comment. Evah.

  35. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think KFC wants to lose customers. But maybe if he had a chicken costume onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦..

Oh wait…. or maybe he could put on a cow costume and hang out in front of Chick Fil A with a sign that reads “Eat More Chicken”?

  36. Best. Bitchy. Comment. Evah.

Sniff. That might just be. sniff. The nicest thing anyone has ever said to me. sniff. Right now. Here today. I feel. Like the luckiest. Poster. In the world (echo, echo, echo).

  37. Why do I feel that I am in the Burt Lancaster film The Rainmaker and that for a mere $100 Danny is going to make it rain for me. I know his heart is in the right place but it just seems so sleazy and over the top. Why couldn’t Danny work for the American Heart Association or give of his time to established, reputable charitable organizations in Sophia’s memory.

But I guess then he and Sophia’s sister and brother-in-law wouldn’t have jobs working for the foundation. It just feels so contrived and calculated.

  38. I’m not sure I understand the criticism behind the 10% charity donation. This isn’t a line of glasses tht Danny created. I thought it said it was from different designers. So it would seem that the company is the one that is donating the 10% and that they are using Danny to drum up their own sales. If Danny gets a little bit of money for his foundantion for putting his face on the advertisement, then it seems like a win win. I don’t think it is saying that 10% of what Danny earns a spokesperson will go to charity. If I’m missing the boat, feel free to clarify it for me.

  39. Who came up with that Danny Gokey Gear “logo” & font?

It looks like something a 9 year old ninja Transformers fan would doodle in his notebook.

Are they using the word Gear rather than Glasses with the hope that Danny will be promoting more “gear” in the future? What other Gokey Gear can we expect in the future?

  40. Okay, I may feel some residual guilt about being mean to Danny, but I have no such reservations about Sarver and The Blind Singing Wonder Boy Scott. Sarver and the KFC/Scott at Starbucks? Freaking hilarious. I love you people.
    :wub_tb:

  41. It looks like something a 9 year old ninja Transformers fan would doodle in his notebook.

    Hee!

    I love you people.

This is evolving into one of my all time favorite threads. Lots of lolz :)

  42. You never know. Could be huge. Especially if he went on QVC or something. People are still buying junk with their credit cards, even in this recession.

I remember when 900 numbers first came out, thought they were the stupidest thing ever, then Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince made a mint and you started hearing about parents getting phone bills of hundreds of dollars a month (and not understanding, heh).

Certainly, 19 would want to make as many deals as possible because they get a taste, more than a taste, actually, and the clock is ticking as soon as the season’s over.

  43. next up… the Danny Gokey Lenscrafters Experience! :-)

Seriously, it seems like a good charity, and if it does some good, all the more power to him.

  44. Danny Gokey Gear official website:

Oh man, that website makes me wretch. I’m especially annoyed by the fact that he calls his dorky glasses “Gear”. What a fucking poser.

  45. From the Danny Gokey Gear website:
“with or without a perscription”–ah, the 10% donation meant they had to fire their proofreader

“This website is not affiliated with Danny Gokey or Sophia’s Heart Foundation.” Huh?

  46. I just went to the “gear” site and hit the link that gave you information about the foundation. And the information about the foundation is the same regurgitated stuff that Danny has been talking about post idol (with a couple of pictures of some cute kids). Now what the foundation does other than honor Sophia’s name is still a riddle to me. Where will the money go, what kind of kids does the foundation serve, how much money is used for admin costs and what goes directly to the kids?

I seem to recall the debacle concerning Phil Stacey and his concert which was to help raise money for a little girl…and when all was said and done the concert lost money and the little girl got nothing.

Besides “Frames Direct” can write off all of the money given to a “charitable” foundation so they aren’t really giving anything but are raking in retail sales dollars with their products that are tied to a “charitable” donation.

This is the absolute worst kind of fund raising. If someone wants to donate to Danny’s foundation, please do so…but don’t think that buying over-priced online glasses is doing a good deed. That’s just plan horse shit.

  47. Now what the foundation does other than honor Sophiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s name is still a riddle to me. Where will the money go, what kind of kids does the foundation serve, how much money is used for admin costs and what goes directly to the kids?

I don’t think it’s that well thought out. Danny’s charity seems very thrown together, heat of the moment. Which is not to say he doesn’t do good things with the money. But I don’t think he has a focused mission statement and a specific action plan. If its going to last he will have to develop those things over time. He probably doesn’t have a lot of non-profit experience.

  48. Why do I feel that I am in the Burt Lancaster film The Rainmaker and that for a mere $100 Danny is going to make it rain for me. I know his heart is in the right place but it just seems so sleazy and over the top. Why couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Danny work for the American Heart Association or give of his time to established, reputable charitable organizations in Sophiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s memory.

I see your point. However, I really get the feeling that Danny wanted to start something up in his wife’s name. He wanted a legacy for her, so to speak. She was a teacher and volunteered to work with underpriveledged kids, as did Danny.

From what I understand, he received a life insurance policy check after she died that he didn’t realize he was going to get. He didn’t want to just spend the money, and decided to start up this foundation to carry on with the things she tried to do in her life. I actually do think his heart is in the right place. (My neighber bought a nice big boat with the life insurance money when his wife died. I like him. He cuts my grass for free. I’m just sayin’)

With that said, I do think Danny dreams big. He wants this foundation to do so many things. Maybe it can….what do I know?

I really like Danny’s voice. For me, Adam was the best “singer” and performer on AI this year and I picked him to win, but Danny had the best “voice.” I don’t know if he will get a deal with 19. Just because he doesn’t, does not mean that he is not a good singer (see Elliot Yamin). I actually don’t think 19 would have signed Kris, had he not won….so good for Kris, he really needed this win. And yes, I do think Kris has talent. AI just didn’t seem very interested.

I really do wish success for all of the idols, especially the top 5.

  49. Now what the foundation does other than honor Sophiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s name is still a riddle to me. Where will the money go, what kind of kids does the foundation serve, how much money is used for admin costs and what goes directly to the kids?

They do not have a cohesive plan. That charity is all over the place. And again, whatever they give away is meaningless unless you know what they collected.

  50. But I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think he has a focused mission statement and a specific action plan. If its going to last he will have to develop those things over time. He probably doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have a lot of non-profit experience.

But wouldn’t that be the first thing out of the blocks before you go and put your name and photo on a product endorsement that you say gives to your charity. It’s all like strike while the iron is hot and people still know your name and we will figure out what to do once we get the money. Wrong! wrong!wrong!

If Danny has a good plan and knows exactly what he needs to do I am sure he can convince some private donors or a larger foundation to help get him started. This is just so “back of the candy store” thrown together that it makes me totally queezy.

  51. But wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t that be the first thing out of the blocks before you go and put your name and photo on a product endorsement that you say gives to your charity. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s all like strike while the iron is hot and people still know your name and we will figure out what to do once we get the money. Wrong! wrong!wrong!

Beginning a non-profit is complicated business. Establishing a mission and putting all of your duckies in a row is not easy. A foundation begun at the last minute to capitalize on your 15 minutes on a reality show is surely a recipe for disaster. Plus, Danny’s heavy affliation with that bizarre church with it’s prosperity based mission would make me suspect of any activity that involved him collecting money.

Until they publish their financials – I’ll consider it either a scam – or a misguided effort. No way would I give them any of my money. Way too many legitimate charities out there with focused missions and established track records to waste any resources on Danny’s crap.

  52. i guess the singing with the cats gig is out
but than the cats must be scared of him as well
so this is a good second best for him

    only joking here

  53. I kind of wonder if this kind of thing is the reason Danny hasn’t been offered a contract. Like some label or other came to talk to him, and he has a muddle of ideas about what he wants to happen, with unformed plans for the foundation and charity and how that overlaps with his music, and they’re all, huzzawha? And they back away slowly, while he mutters, “For the children! Sophia’s heart! Glasses! Salsa with gospel and soul for the playground unhappy children who need glasses!”

I could see how that might turn off A&R people who just want to talk about records.

  54. OK…everyone can pelt me with rocks now but I have to say this….

I really think that Danny has a screw loose. He just does not seem to understand how the world works. I don’t know if he is intellectual challenged, doesn’t have any common sense, or he is just totally and completely oblivious. But there just seems to be something not quite right with him. For me, clueless is the perfect definition of Mr. Gokey….my gosh he puts a whole generation of dumb blonds to shame.

  55. Danny is really one odd dude. I hope he signs with a Christian label and doesn’t realize his dream of an r&b w/Latin album. But he’s a loose cannon so anything is possible. He’s really hyper and out there. No way will 19 sign him.

I wonder if anyone can talk sense to him or get him on some meds or something. I think he’s friends with Chris Sligh who’s a very smart guy. Maybe he can get him to understand how the real world works.

  56. I kind of wonder if this kind of thing is the reason Danny hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t been offered a contract. Like some label or other came to talk to him, and he has a muddle of ideas about what he wants to happen, with unformed plans for the foundation and charity and how that overlaps with his music, and theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re all, huzzawha? And they back away slowly, while he mutters, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“For the children! Sophiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s heart! Glasses! Salsa with gospel and soul for the playground unhappy children who need glasses!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

I could see how that might turn off A&R people who just want to talk about records.

Y’know, I hate to be critical of Danny. Lord knows he gets way too much criticism, much of it undeserved.

But, I do think you might have a point here. I’ve actually kind of thought of this myself. Listening to his after idol interviews, while to me, he comes across as someone who is honest, open and has a good heart, he also tends to ramble and brings everything back to the foundation that he wants to work on.

I can imagine that record company execs might be kinda wtf? And, who knows, maybe Danny is like this partly because he never really had time to greive properly…and so he is kinda still bringing everything back to Sophia.

But yeah, I see your point. It is possible. It’s also possible that 19 just doesn’t want to sign him, because although he has a great voice (and I think AI really loved his voice), Danny is harder to place in the current market.

    Bwah! :lol_tb:

Bwwwahhhh! Okay, I am officially going to hell. But at least I’ll be laughing.

You may be on to something. I do think that if a label really wanted him they’d deal with the charity thing, but he did seem to approach the foundation the way he approached a music career. In his post AI interviews he admitted that he didn’t know much about music outside a church context, but he thought he’d give it a try because he knew he could sing and he just sort of felt the need to go for it. So he jumped in without really thinking to much about it. His intentions were good but he ended up trying to play catch up to people who were better prepared for the experience. So now he’s meeting with labels who expect you to have more of a vision for yourself, and he’s got.. nothing. Someone may still pick him up, but there is a definite pattern there.

  59. By the way….I was really hoping that Danny would just fade into the background and slowly drop off the face of idoldom so that I wouldn’t be so damn tempted to keep posting about him. I know he isn’t worth my animosity but I just can’t help myself. He just opens himself up for me to take crude swipes at. I keep telling myself to behave myself because it isn’t nice, but………

  60. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s all like strike while the iron is hot and people still know your name and we will figure out what to do once we get the money. Wrong! wrong!wrong

Yep, and that’s exactly the problem I have with Idol Gives Back. They started it with lots of lofty goals, but were going to decide where to give the money to after they had it (they have now identified some organizations they claim to give money to). They don’t report back what they’ve spent the money on (just watch this cute kid dance) and last I heard, they still had most of it. There is no indication what it charges for administration fees and I haven’t been able to find it listed by any of the charity rating organizations. On their website it states the financial report will be posted when available. When might that be? It’s been 2 years.

The New York Time needs to stop wasting time investigating a couple of rogue AT&T employees and find out what the Director and President (aka 19E bigwig and Idol Producer) Simon Fuller and Director, Vice President and CFO (aka Idol Producer) Cecile Frot-Coutaz are doing with all that feakin’ money they collected.

Meanwhile, the Idol Gives Back episodes earned more in ad revenue then they collected in donations. Sigh.

Anyway, who buys frames over the internet? Don’t you have to try them on to see if they work with your face? If you are going to buy the frames anyway and the price is the same as what you would pay at home, I don’t see the harm in buying them from these guys. If they are overpriced or you don’t need the glasses, save your money and send it to a reputable, rated charity.

  61. I do think Danny has every opportunity to sign with a Christian label, if he’ll take it. I don’t listen to Christian music, being an agnostic and all, but I think this would be a pretty sure thing for Danny. I think he’d be very successful in the genre, and who knows, once he made a name, perhaps he could expand from there. Would Danny be the highest AI finisher in the Christian music scene?

Danny makes me sometimes think that AI perhaps should not allow contestants, who are so close to extreme tradgedy, on the show. I know, where would you draw the line?

But still, this is a guy who lost his partner of 12 years, someone whom he had been with since he was a teenager. He blogged about having been depressed last fall and wanting to die. He’s allowed on this show, which I think in the best of times for the strongest of people, would be enormously stressful. He also has had to put up with the most “hate” of any contestant that I’ve seen in the history of the show, rivaled only by Kat McPhee. I could literally feel his pain in the EW interview. He was unprepared for the show, but I do think he was going through some personal issues before the show that probably put preparing for AI on the backburner. All things considered, he did a great job. But I have often wondered about how he can deal with all this mentally….I’d be a mental case, for sure.

  62. I feel bad for Danny. He is just trying to do something good in the name of his wife. If anything, FramesDirect glommed on to Danny after his eyeglasses comment, and figured they might be able to sell some frames with an AI contestant endorsement. There are probably better ways to raise money, but Danny I bet did this with his intentions in the right place. Also, don’t forget, AI benefits from this with their little trademark in the corner. It’s all publicity for the AI Tour. I do hope Danny’s foundation makes a little money out of this.

  63. It’s just weird seeing the Idol logo on there. They charge companies big bucks to market items with that logo so I’m surprised they’re allowing this. I’m so cynical I wonder if the group than owns Idol owns the glasses company. Maybe they’re just trying to be nice to Danny and it is what it is.

  64. I truly think Danny is a good-hearted person who wants to involve himself in noble causes. Unfortunately, even though he’s the oldest member of the top 10, he seems to have the least amount of street smarts. I can see how he’d be a magnet for those less-than-scrupulous types who would think nothing of taking advantage of him, like this eyeglasses vendor and Pastor Rolex at his church.

    :lol_tb:

  66. 10%? Gosh, Danny, can you afford to give away that much? Guess my model for charity-related commercial enterprise is Newmanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Own, which donates all, as in 100%, of its after-tax revenues to charity. Granted, the Newmans have (had) ample income from other sources, so could afford to give it all away. But Gokey keeps telling us the purpose of the business is to fund Sophiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Heart.

Just another example of the reality not quite matching his words.

This is incorrect. Newman’s Own donates 100% of its profits to charity. Danny’s glasses will contribute 10% of its sales. So if the profit margin on the line of business is 10%, then 100% of profits will be given to charity. It depends on the industry, but a company with a 10% profit margin is quite successful, and one with a 20% or more profit margin is wildly successful. So this represents a good sized chunk of the profit. It sounds like Danny struck quite a good deal here.

  67. Dannyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s glasses will contribute 10% of its sales.

The ad indicates that 10% of proceeds will go to the charity. Proceeds could be total sales or net profits, acc to Merriam Webster online dictionary.

    http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/proceeds

The company wouldn’t be making money if they didn’t mean the second definition.

ETA–Actually, deep in the dannygokeygear.com site, it does indicate that 10% of sales made thru framesdirect will go to sophia’s heart.

  68. 1. If Danny is going to do ads, he needs to get his teeth whitened.

    2. I’m most surprised by the AI logo on there. 19 must have consented to it. Why would they?

  69. 19 must have consented to it. Why would they?

It helps them promote the AI concert. It gives a little money to Danny’s foundation.

  70. ETAà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’Actually, deep in the dannygokeygear.com site, it does indicate that 10% of sales made thru framesdirect will go to sophiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s heart.

Yes. Generally in financial terms, “proceeds” means prior to deductions for cost of sales and overhead, etc., but I did check the website to be sure.

  71. I thought that the glasses partnership was weird because heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s still under AI contract until the end of the tour and canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really sponsor anything that is not approved by AI so I tweeted framesdirect.com asking if they had the AI execs blessing to do that and use their logo. They had this to say:

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“framesdirect @Owlki FramesDirect.com partnered with Danny Gokey fan site DannyGokeyGear.com, not Danny himself. Someone misread the blog post apparently.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

I hope they donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get Danny in trouble with AI by using his name without his authorization.

    The framesdirect.com site now states:

“We are fans of Danny Gokey and have been since his first appearance on American Idol. We have seen a lack of information on the internet regarding the styles and manufacturers of the glasses that Danny Gokey has made popular during his performances on American Idol. In addition, we strongly believe in the work that Sophiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Heart Foundation wishes to do; After all, our children are our future. This was a good opportunity to support Danny, provide a great service for other Danny Gokey fans as well as support this wonderful foundation. We have never stated any à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹affiliationà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ or à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹partnershipà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ with Danny or his organization. Our partnership is with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹DannyGokeyGear.comà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ which is a third party website owned and operated by fellow Danny Gokey Fans who also claim no affiliation or partnership with Danny or his foundation. Also note, that never in these sites existence has DannyGokeyGear.com or FramesDirect.com implied or stated any affiliation with either Danny Gokey or Sophiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Heart Foundation.”

  72. I really think that Danny has a screw loose. He just does not seem to understand how the world works. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know if he is intellectual challenged, doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have any common sense, or he is just totally and completely oblivious. But there just seems to be something not quite right with him. For me, clueless is the perfect definition of Mr. Gokeyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.my gosh he puts a whole generation of dumb blonds to shame.

I think this is more the case. Even in the idolarty videos, he seemed all over the place. Unfocused. I don’t know, but something isn’t quite right. Maybe he is still out of it because of his wife’s death. I feel bad for the guy. Maybe I’m being naive, I don’t know, but I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

  73. “Danny, the dork, is not altruisticà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ Here is the proof ”

OmG. You have to be kidding me. This is so out of context. I was not a Danny fan, but these kind of comments just floor me. What’s the point???? Let the guy have his 15 minutes…. He is not threatening anyone…..

The internet is full of amateur reporters. Blehh… I know I’m crossing the line…. arghhhh…..

  74. If FramesDirect is really not in any way afiliated with Danny Gokey and didn’t pay Danny or AI for the use of his image or the AI logo, then they deserve to get their asses sued by both of them for trademark infringement. Danny has a right to control the use of his image or likeness, and AI has the right to control use of their trademark and logo.

  75. Ah, yes, TMZ.com is where one goes for in-depth investigative journalism.

An out-of-context joke proves what exactly?

  76. If FramesDirect is really not in any way afiliated with Danny Gokey and didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t pay Danny or AI for the use of his image or the AI logo, then they deserve to get their asses sued by both of them for trademark infringement. Danny has a right to control the use of his image or likeness, and AI has the right to control use of their trademark and logo.

I agree. I was amazed when I got the tweet back from them. How can framesdirect.com and dannygokeygear.com use his image and the AI logo without their consent and don’t even consider that they are infringing their rights?

  77. Besides his vioce may not hold up on tour.He had trouble with it doing 2 songs a week.PR nitemare is why he wont get signed. The letter from frames direct is dated may 23.Tells me danny and idol are making something off of it.Cant think they dont know about it by now.

Danny’s a himbo. He really seems sheltered, naive, and not terribly bright. I have to wonder how many of those tough street kids he talks about laugh at him behind his back. I can only imagine the dumb, pie in the sky platitudes he spouts make them roll their eyes at him.

Still, I now find him harmless and just hope he finds some peace. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn 19 wants him on a Sony Christian label and he’s still convinced he should be mainstream. I kind of think his world is going to crumble once the AI tour is over and he has to face real life and the very real grieving process he pretty much admitted during Idolatry that AI has allowed him to avoid

  79. In any other situation besides American Idol Danny Gokey would have been put on any states sex offenders website for how he roughed up a cake and Allison Iraheta at the same time. He is a perv. He knew is wife was dieing before he even married her…he is an opportunist. If you shave his head you will find a little birthmark that forms the numbers 666. If you buy his glasses you will only see the world thru Satan. Seriously.

  80. only one rant, danny’s website actully looks pretty good, at least much better than the adamofficial.

  81. SpencerJ, you’ve made my day!!! Let’s go to hell together, I’m sure we will meet more super extra people there :)

  82. Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s go to hell together, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sure we will meet more super extra people there :)

There is something good to be said about going to hell – it is summer all year round – dress accordingly!

  83. I agree. I was amazed when I got the tweet back from them. How can framesdirect.com and dannygokeygear.com use his image and the AI logo without their consent and donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even consider that they are infringing their rights?

So, this is actually some kind of fantard enterprise? No, they should not be able to use Danny’s likeness or the AI logo to seel their products, without permission. But, if they’re selling eyewear “worn” by Danny – didn’t he have to give the glasses to them? How’d they get them?

I suspect the AI peeps will make this disappear soon LOL.

Like the song Danny sang,”DREAM ON”!
Only maybe in that place you may be tortured with Danny’s version of “Scream On”, with his SCREECH!
    What torment that would be!

  85. What gets me is that Danny was 3rd in the competition! He placed pretty high out of so many who tried out. Most people I know were actually HUGE Danny fans (some of them even loved Dream On, and said Adam’s Whole Lotta Love was the worst performance that night, to which I was like “Uh, whaa–?” )

I agree Danny’s lack of musical experience and focus are probably my biggest problems with him – in retrospect I would have been even more pissed if he had made the finale over Adam or Kris, considering how little experience he had compared to either of them. As a musician myself, I just have a lot more respect and appreciation for people who know their stuff, really live, eat, and breath music, and just have no other dream but to spread their love of music – and I can’t say that he seemed to quite embody those ideas as much as either of them, or many other contestants for that matter.

That lack of focus is definitely hurting him now. I see another problem for him, too, which is that, the genres he seems most suited to, stylistically, he has shown no interest in pursuing. I think that the Christian music route is definitely the best for him, but he never mentions that (interesting, considering his church director background and “inspirational” leaning songs throughout the show). So if he just sticks with something like that, “brings it to church” in his recordings, etc. he could do really really well. And he has a great voice for that kind of music.

But, as others have said, he just hasn’t seemed to focus on any one real, cohesive goal. And without that, he will have a hard time achieving anything.

Sort of unrelated note, but it occured to me that between Adam and Danny, this may be the season with some of the weirdest reasons for deciding to try out for Idol – I know the death of his wife wasn’t the sole reason for Danny, but he has been quoted as saying “she would have wanted it”, or something to that effect.

  86. I like to snark on Danny but I don’t think there is anything mentally wrong with him. He seems normal enough. He just made a few impulsive decisions in the wake of his wife’s death, and now we’re seeing the aftermath. In my opinion he meant well with everything but he hasn’t really pulled it together yet. I think he saw some of this stuff as a “calling” of sorts, and just thought god would guide him – something like that. That is a very easy thing for a strongly religious person to believe.

Oh, and I agree the AI lawyers will be calling these guys soon. Dun-dun DUN!

  87. BTW — reading the comments on the first page from work – and I almost completely lost it! Those were so bad, yet so hilarious! Oh. My. God. :lol_tb:

  88. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“framesdirect @Owlki FramesDirect.com partnered with Danny Gokey fan site DannyGokeyGear.com, not Danny himself. Someone misread the blog post apparently.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

I figured that this was the case. The Gokey Gear website has nothing to do with Danny. It was something that was started while he was on the show, by his fans to sell gear with his name up there to other fans. He has never made a profit off of Gokey Gear. It’s like the Cafe Press website, where people sell clothes promoting people’s favorite Idols. I’ve seen Cafe Press promoting Anoop with Anoop apparel with logos on it like Noopdog. And I think that some of Anoop’s friends were behind that.

And they decided to donate 100% money that was made from selling Anoop gear to the memorial fund of his slain friend. Gokey Gear is similar to Cafe Press, except that FramesDirect is going to get most of the profit, and donate only 10% to Danny’s foundation.

Danny didn’t start this, eyeglass thing., FramesDirect, are capitializing on his name and his plans to create an eyeglass line to make money for themselves. And in return are donating 10% of their profits to his charity as some sort of compromise.

But since they aren’t affliated, with him or his charity, I don’t think that he knew anything about this. I wonder if the AI people will be contacting this company soon.

  89. I agree, I think Danny is just taking a step at a time and figuring things out as he goes. But he is sincere.
He is using the opportunities and has goals he is working towards. Nothing wrong with it. All the idols are using their opportunity and striking while the iron is hot.
His intentions are good, we can speculate all we want. AI is over seeing everything though, no doubt.
He’ll get there with the strength, courage, and faith he has. And I believe Danny will have the last laugh at the scoffers.

  90. I figured that this was the case. The Gokey Gear website has nothing to do with Danny. It was something that was started while he was on the show, by his fans to sell gear with his name up there to other fans. He has never made a profit off of Gokey Gear.

Well then, I sense trouble coming their way. While you can put anyone’s picture on your web site, you cannot use someone’s likeness to sell your product without their permission. And, they also cannot use the American Idol logo to do it either. So, they’ve probably already received a cease and desist letter (if not, it’s coming soon!)

At first, I thought they meant glasses physically worn by Danny himself. But, now I get it – they’re just trying to make money selling people the same style of glasses Danny wears.

So, the glasses company and the fangroup are both trying to make money off of Danny. Lovely. Actually, the enterprising fantards are one of my favorite kind. There’s always someone in the fan base who figures out how to squeeze money out of the other fans for their own benefit.

  91. Interesting info from the website, and curious new disclaimer language. Huh. Talk about opportunistic! Guess this economy makes folks desperate, because this unaffiliated affiliation turns my stomach.

Also note, that never in these sites existence has DannyGokeyGear.com or FramesDirect.com implied or stated any affiliation with either Danny Gokey or Sophiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Heart Foundation.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Yeah, there’s no implied affiliation with Danny, just a huge silly grinning mug shot, oh, and his name in oddly fonted caps! I agree, some legal folks are working on this already.

    Sheesh!

  92. smartcookie: oh, you gives me the evil laugh.

Sorry, Danny G. This whole idea sounds like Doom on a Bun.

But it’s Kristen’s point that really shocked me. I had no idea that Idol Gives Back is doing such a crappy job being a reputable charity.

On the one hand, the list of organizations they give to is very worthy and reputable.

On the other, when I worked for a large non-profit they urged their audience to never give to charities that don’t publish a financial statement, and suggested using the Charity Navigator site to research organizations before you give. It allows you to see every thing from the percent of money spent directly on programs vs that spent in fundraising, the salary paid to the head of the foundation. Nothing for IGB, since they’ve never made a pubic report!

CN does have a problem keeping up with the sheer number of charities out there, so if a charity is not in it, it doesn’t mean it’s bad, they may not have had time to review it, and small local charities are less likely to be covered.

But Idol Gives Back, I cut my eyes at you: no excuses!

Here ends your public service announcement. Maturin is not affiliated with Charity Navigator.

  93. lizzy, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just a few people having harmless fun on Friday :)

Harmless fun? Perhaps, but sometimes I wonder if I wandered onto VFTW by mistake.

  94. I agree, I think Danny is just taking a step at a time and figuring things out as he goes. But he is sincere.

ITA. And I like tinawina, don’t think that he has a mental problem either.

And I actually think that he does know how he wants to run his foundation and is working on that. I think that he is probably doing a good job with that. He seems really focused/driven on making sure it is successful. And he does have people working with him, so it’s not just him working by himself. He said that he will not accept cash donations himself, but there are other ways set up to take donations for it.

And he’s mentioned the foundation having an accountant, and people that are helping establish art programs for it. He has other people helping him run the foundation. Plus he’s taken a trip to Nashville, before tour rehearsals began for meetings for his foundation and according to his Twitter he’s in Milwaukee today for some important meetings regarding it.

Also his benefit dinner for it in Milwaukee, that happened after he was eliminated sold out and I think that they raised a lot of money for it. I believe that he is serious about his foundation and is working hard on getting it underway, and he has a team of people that are helping him with that.

Now if he would take that same drive/ambition, and put that into making an album, he would be in good shape.

  95. nteresting info from the website, and curious new disclaimer language. Huh. Talk about opportunistic! Guess this economy makes folks desperate, because this unaffiliated affiliation turns my stomach.

That’s some shady shit right there :/

I’m starting to feel bad for the guy. If 19 is not gonna sign him then they pretty much used him for show purposes possibly w/o him being in on the joke. The least they could do is help him out a bit with setting up his charity, since I do think he has good intentions.

  96. If 19 is not gonna sign him then they pretty much used him for show purposes possibly w/o him being in on the joke. The least they could do is help him out a bit with setting up his charity, since I do think he has good intentions.

AI makes one promise – that it will give the winner a record contract. It doesn’t owe anyone else anything. It’s a show that exists to produce huge ratings and lots of ad revenue. So, everyone on it is used for show purposes. I don’t think 19 is required to assist any of the contestants in setting up charities. And apparently, it doesn’t have the expertise to do so anyway.

  97. This thread is fucking hilarious!

  98. But ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Kristenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s point that really shocked me. I had no idea that Idol Gives Back is doing such a crappy job being a reputable charity.

Shocked me too. It sounds shameful.

Re Danny’s glasses, on the show they all looked the same to me. I didn’t notice the difference in them. Not that I was looking closely. But if someone was really into glasses, I would think they’d be more noticably different, like elton John’s for instance. Danny didn’t have any goldfish in his glasses, for example. :)

  99. Buying glasses has always been hard for me. I’m never happy with what’s out there so the more the better…

I would not buy because Danny’s name is attached or his foundation but after awhile this can surreptitiously seek in as a reason that I would go for this product.

Danny sure is getting his name out there.

  100. What impress us the most this year is the special border design.Rather than just the frameless, semi-frame or full frame, the design distincts it from the traditional straight lines to a graceful arc, an abstract design or mounted on the inside of the lens, making the entire glasses light and flexible, filled with fashion sense.

We have a vast variety of discounted metal glasses frames, including women’s and men’s metal eyewear.Sunglasses are trendy during the past years, themetal eyeglasses are rare, though.

  101. Plastic glasses frames are extremely lightweight and durable. Its skin-care feature prevents skin from allergy. In addition, plastic eyewear exists in many colors, so such plastic eyeglasses never fade. Another great advantage is that a pair of eyeglass frames can present two or more colors, making your eyeglasses fashionable and unique.
