Carrie Underwood Nabs 2 CMA Nominations

Nominations in the final 5 categories of 44th Annual CMA Awards were announced today and Carrie Underwood nabbed nominations in the categories of Album Of The Year for her album Play On and Female Vocalist Of The Year.

This is Carrie’s 5th consecutive nomination in the CMA Female Vocalist of the Year category (she has won 3 times) and her 2nd nomination for CMA Album of the Year (Carnival Ride was nominated in 2008).

Despite a very successful and well-reviewed headlining tour and her ambassadorship for country music, Carrie did not snag her 1st nomination in the CMA Entertainer Of The Year category. The media will likely talk about that being a significant snub since several of the nominated acts are not yet proven as concert headliners.

Also notable is the fact that last year’s CMA Entertainer Of The Year Taylor Swift did not get nominated in that category again and snagged a lone nomination in the Female Vocalist Of The Year category.

Summary of the nominations after the jump:

Miranda Lambert leads the pack with 9 nominations including one for Entertainer Of The Year. This year’s CMA Awards looks to be the Miranda Lambert and Lady Antebellum show with appearances by Miranda Lambert‘s fiancé Blake Shelton and breakthrough act Zac Brown Band. This year’s CMA Awards will air on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 8 PM Eastern/7 PM Central on ABC, with cohosts Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood at the helm.

  1. Even Taylor in a Vocalist category is a stretch ;)

    Congratulations to Carrie!

  2. i can’t believe carrie isn’t nominated for entertainer of the year!! that is such a joke!! she should not only be nominated, but she should have won it!

  3. Being a long time country fan, I must say I was highly insulted when Taylor won EOTY last year. That used to go to an established artist or act that had earned it the hard way with years of effort. But even with that criteria, it’s time for Carrie to be nominated at the very least. I love Lady A, but seriously, they shouldn’t be in that category over Carrie.

  4. I wish the media would publish the requirements for EOTY. Miranda hasnt had a big headlining tour nor has Lady A. Carries was close to consistent sellout and no nom? I do think they are trying to get some new blood in the noms but I think new people should at least deserve the nom. Taylor would make more sense in the EOTY category as opposed to vocalist? Gimme a break! Miranda has worked long and hard to get her recogniton, her songs are better then Carries bvt shes not a better vocalist. They keep nominating George Strait even though he only does 25 max concerts a year, no huge tours, and hasnt had a platinum album in a while. None of it makes sense.

  5. I agree that Carrie deserves to at least be nominated for EOTY. Lady A, not so much. Taylor does not belong in the Vocalist category. Looks like Miranda is making a HUGE splash this year, rightfully so.

  6. I don’t think this is going to be Carrie’s year. If I was a betting woman my money wouldn’t be on Carrie. Has she been shut out before?

  7. Maybe the whole country-pop princess thing is going to lull a bit. There’s always phases in music; maybe country is going into a more down-home, gritty phase. Seems that way with these nominations.

Welcome to what everybody’s known for months ;) Carrie’s only chance at a CMA win this year was if she got nominated for Entertainer Of The Year and she’d have been the favorite to win if she’d been nominated. But they totally changed the way they voted after the Taylor Swift debacle last year. Carrie was shut out at the CMAs last year too because of the Taylor Swift thing.

OvenMitt: There’s always phases in music; maybe country is going into a more down-home, gritty phase.

That’d be believable if they weren’t nominating Lady Antebellum all over the place. They’re as country pop as it comes and not down-home/gritty at all. Also I love Keith but his music is also poppier than Carrie’s. Carrie’s music is grittier and edgier than both of them which oughta tell you something ;)

  9. I’m very surprised Carrie didn’t get nominated for Entertainer of the Year. It just doesn’t seem right. She’s had a strong concert, TV, and Radio presence as well as solid sales. I was floored when Taylor Swift won last year.

I’d also be curious to know how nominees are chosen. I suspect like most awards, it’s political.

  10. LIFE GOES ON… U CAN’T PLEASE EVERYBODY… SORRY… MAYBE NEXT TIME… I’M SOOO HAPPY FOR MIRANDA LAMBERT… FINALLY SHE GETS WHAT SHE DESERVES… 9 NOMINATIONS… WHAT AN AMAZING HONOR… SHE’S SOOO AMAZING AND SOOO TALENTED… GREAT JOB, MIRANDA… U DESERVE IT… ONLY GOD JUDGES…

  11. I don’t really understand why Zac Brown Band is nominated for EOTY…
But anyways, Congrats to Carrie on her nominations anyway! :)

IDK, I feel like Lady Antebellum is down-home. Maybe our versions of grittier are different; Carrie Underwood hasn’t a single rough edge on her, in my opinion. She seems very much in an ivory tower, snakes with blue eyes and bathroom Polo-wearing cheaters aside.

  13. OvenMitt: IDK, I feel like Lady Antebellum is down-home.

They were down home on their debut album but Need You Now isn’t like that other than American Honey. As far as Carrie I agree she isn’t personally edgy but even The Village Voice wrote an article about her music is surprisingly “serrate” when you think about songs like BHC and Last Name. That’s what I was talking about. Too, my point wasn’t that Carrie is actually all that gritty or edgy. It’s that musically she’s more so than Lady A and Keith these days and that says a lot about how un-gritty and edgeless they are. By the way that doesn’t mean all their music lately has been bad. Keith had a great single with Til Summer Comes Around that I’d have much rather seen nominated for Song Of The Year over Toes by Zac Brown Band (WTF?).
