American Idol Season 9 Update: Spoilers and Promos

In any other Idol season, Hollywood week would have come and gone by now.

Last year, we already knew who made the Top 36 and were happily hunting down info on the newbies. This year, Hollywood Week doesn’t take place until January, leaving us Idol fans a little starved for meaningful spoilers.

The latest fun excercise has been to play spot-the-contestant in the latest   Season 9 Idol commercials currently running on FOX.

The promo above is the first to feature new judge Ellen Degeneres, who joins the panel in Hollywood next month. Word is,   Ellen Simon is the reason Hollywood Week is so late this year, but TPTB have got to love screwing over those of us who love spoilers…

correction:   According to the LA Times,   the Hollywood Week delay was caused by Simon.

Idol Forums has identified a few contestants from past seasons who once again made the cut to Hollywood.   Who knows, maybe Season 9 could be their lucky season. (Ask Idol returnees Gina Glocksen and Chikezie about that!): via Vote For the Worst.

ETA:   Producers have hinted in a few interviews that the Idol format could revert back to the Top 24, ending the experiment with the pre-Season 4 Top 36 format.   No official word on that yet. The new season of American Idol begins on January 12.

  1. Is it me ir Carrie, Kris, Cook and Jordin are the only ones in the backdrop?

Randy looks good in orange and I’m glad we’ll get to see Frankie Jordan again.

  2. WOW! I am impressed with Angela’s dedication. I liked her, so I’m glad she’s back. I’m already REALLY happy that Frankie is trying again. I thought she should have made it last year. She was hysterical also.

  3. I am really excited about Frankie and Angela! I was sure Frankie would make Top 13 last year, so maybe this season!

Kris has GOT to be on the banner. I think we just couldn’t see them all in the commercials but will during the tryouts (and of course in the initial credits).

    S9 already? Sadz.

  4. Would Ricky Braddy be eligible to try out this year of is it if you make top 36 you no longer can try out again?

  5. Would Ricky Braddy be eligible to try out this year of is it if you make top 36 you no longer can try out again?

He’s ineligible, which makes me sad. (No Jesse either, which makes me even more sad. And the list goes on… damn Top 36 format)

  6. Trust me, I paused and slid that slider back and forth enough on the Tubeys. It’s Carrie, Kris, then an outline of the US, then David and Jordin.

I hate to say I can understand leaving off Ruben and Taylor, but…yeah. But why did they leave off Kelly? Does the first Idol get no love?

And the video labeled “Commercial Three” clearly shows Kris over the girl’s shoulder right after Randy says welcome to Hollywood.

  7. Well, maybe the other four are on banners closer to the judges. What’s “amusing is that they’ve skipped Taylor, except they’ve probably divided it up gender-wise and the last two women to win were Jordin and Carrie and the last two men were Kris and David. The other two earlier women and men are probably on some other banner. Furthermore, they have the latest two winners closest to the center of the banner….

I think I’ve already given this too much thought. ;-)

Well according to the L.A. Times article posted today in Headlines, it’s Simon:

Hollywood Week has traditionally been filmed in November, but producers changed it to January to accommodate Cowell’s schedule,

Frankly that makes more sense to me. Isn’t that awful British show of his still going on? How would he have been able to set aside a week to be in Los Angeles in November? Ellen, on the other hand, just has to rejigger her taping schedule a bit to accommodate Hollywood Week, I would imagine.

Anyway, I prefer a spoiler-free season (sorry MJ!), and much less pimping is possible during the audition shows with a later Hollywood Week, so I’m all for it.

  9. Over on ontd_ai they analyze everything. So according to them Kris and Cook are the 2 closes to the center of the logo on th Idol banners. I can’t watch these vids at work but if Commercial Three is the one I think it is, then it is Kris over the girl’s shoulder and the picture is from the NoBo performance (Top 2 performance night).

  10. Okay, I’m officially getting psyched for the new season. And now that I’ve been through AI once and have already attached to a couple season 8 peeps, I think I’ll be able to enjoy it more as I won’t be attaching like that again any time soon. That is the way it works, right? ;)

  11. FINALLY SEASON 9 is around the corner…. we should have a special party when it starts!!!

  12. I think I’ll be able to enjoy it more as I won’t be attaching like that again any time soon. That is the way it works, right?

Actually, yes, if you can NOT get attached to anyone new :) . I enjoyed Season 8 MUCH more because I wasn’t tunnel-vision on one person, so not only was I not so stressed out, but I was able to appreciate several people instead of just one. Season 7 had me a nervous wreck by the time I was totally hooked on David Cook. Last season was much more fun. I had my favorites, but nothing like S7. And it has continued to be much more pleasant right through the album releases, lol. We’ll see if I get invested in anyone on S9. Though, I must say, the only problem with liking more people on S8 is that I bought more album/singles… heh!

Heh… this is me, but flipped; I had two strong favorites in S8 (who both did well and have record deals, so I shouldn’t protest or anything), where in S7 I liked a lot of people and have supported a few of them off the show, even though I wasn’t really yet fully immersed in the bubble. (Heck, I even am the proud owner of an Amanda Overmyer CD. Fun stuff!)

  14. I have a big wish for the new season that I’m sure won’t come true: don’t waste time showing all those dreadful never-will-be-anybody auditions! Remember we didn’t even get to see Kris in audition last season because of all the valuable time AI wasted on some who should never have even made it past the initial stage.

But I may as well wish for some other pie-in-the-sky thing like limited AI voting. ;)

This is what I wish for. But my pre-teen children LOVE this part…go figure. What I do now is wait for the top 12 and then start watching.

  16. larc,

I think you’re more likely to get your first wish (fewer dreadful auditions) than a change in the voting. Despite the hoopla every year, it’s in Fox’s interest to not limit voting. It helps keep people vested in the show (esp. tweens/teens who are more likely to text vote or redial multiple times) and thus helps put a stop loss on the viewership decline in that demographic. Also, by saying how the number of votes received broke new records, they can avoid saying that fewer people than ever bothered to vote.

I felt the exact opposite. I loved Cook in Season 7 and that extra investment made the season so much fun — granted I was biting my nails each Tuesday and Wednesday — but, man, I had a blast anticipating the show, worrying and seeking out spoilers, and conversing with fellow fans. I also made a lot of nice new friends.

This past season — not feeling as strongly about anyone — I was much more removed. I wouldn’t always pay attention or care how things turned out. Plus, all the changes they made to the season really ruined it for me — the extra judge, the top 36, that horrific, ghoulish house they made them have sings-off in, the judges choosing contestants with no viewer input, the judges save, the one strike and you’re out, the lack of exposure in the semi-finals. Hated it. Hated it. Hated it. It really helped to distant me from the contestants since I felt 1) that good people were being eliminated too quickly and 2) those that were left I barely remembered, I just didn’t give a crap. Maybe that’s a lesson learned for AI as to why this group doesn’t have the fans previous seasons had.

  18. Excited!! It’ll be fun hearing new voices attached to new stories and new journeys. There’ve been lots of contestants I’ve liked but no one I’ve really been invested in many seasons because in the end it’s going to come down to what they do after the show. Can’t wait to read up on the spoilers and all that!

  19. I’m glad to see Jessica Furney tried out again. I liked her last year and was hoping she’d give it another go.

  20. I felt the exact opposite. I loved Cook in Season 7 and that extra investment made the season so much fun ‘” granted I was biting my nails each Tuesday and Wednesday ‘” but, man, I had a blast anticipating the show, worrying and seeking out spoilers, and conversing with fellow fans.

Exactly how I feel about Adam in the past season. I don’t think I can emotionally invest in anybody in Season 9 as much as I did with Adam. After all, a girl can only have One true love. :)

  21. I loved Cook in Season 7 and that extra investment made the season so much fun ‘” granted I was biting my nails each Tuesday and Wednesday ‘” but, man, I had a blast anticipating the show, worrying and seeking out spoilers, and conversing with fellow fans.

See, I hadn’t found this blog yet until later in the season so maybe that’s why it wasn’t as fun for me, heh. I didn’t have anyone to talk about it with for a while! Not that I didn’t enjoy Cookie’s season, because I did, I just found last season less stressful. And since I’m one seriously anxious girl :) , less stressful is sometimes good!

  22. Wow, I really do have a short attention span when it comes to this show. Outside of Frankie, I have no recollection of these people whatsoever. At least my season to season amnesia makes it all a fun surprise for me :)

  23. Re commercial 5: I realize that the show has been going on long enough that college age people have been watching it since childhood, more or less.

But hey, anonymous trailer 5 dude: if you *have* been watching the show that long . . . haven’t you realized that the people who SAY out loud that they’ve been wanting this their whole lives never, ever make it?

Well, I guess it’s more then rhetoric. People who’ve been trying to make it as singers and musicians for years do well on this show. People who’ve been in their bedroom imagining being an American Idol contestant, not so much.

  24. i usually cant stand the auditions rounds. but this year, im actually looking forward to it. hopefully, they’ll show more of the hollywood rounds this year.

the background song, is that from U2? anyway, wrong TOML.

  25. What about Michael Castro? I assumed he had made it to Hollywood week since we know he auditioned, and he tweeted that December was going to be the last month you could buy his album (songs?) off his website.

  26. Kris not being shown during the auditions till top 36 is what makes his story even more compelling and fitting to the purpose of the show.
TPTB would be dumb not to promote him well enough to make it quite big, IMO.
Moreover he’s very talented and knows who he is as an artist so half their work is already done.

  27. YES I see Kris in commercial 3 right at 0:16.

I’m exhausted after S8 and better not get this invested again on any show or anyone!

  28. I will never forget the night I heard Adam sing ROF. I was half watching and wandering around the house with a huge glass of tea. I stopped right in front of the TV and dropped the iced tea. I just stood there and said “What the Hell was that?” A few minutes later I heard Simon say the exact same thing. I was forever captured by Lambert, and have since spent a portion of my daily life scouring the web for any scrap of info about him. I hope the same thing happens to me this season…but I don’t know if my body or soul can take it.

  29. In a bizarre and paradoxical way, I enjoy the weird sleight of hand of Idol editing, whereby the time any of these shows airs, most of these dreams will already be shattered.

C’mon, we wouldn’t get so invested if it weren’t for the farce of the audition rounds–it’s like we not only get to see singing kids we like, but it’s as if they survived the Lost plane crash. OMG, it’s you! You made it through that total disaster! Now I’m rooting for you to escape the smoke monster, er, make it through Hollywood!

The guy in commercial 2 sucks.

Really? Cus I thought he was pretty good. :) Altho we only heard a few seconds of it so I could change my mind. :) You could even change your mind ROFL.

  31. i usually cant stand the auditions rounds. but this year, im actually looking forward to it. hopefully, they’ll show more of the hollywood rounds this year.

I’m not a huge fan of the audition rounds myself. After the second week, they start getting really boring to me. But, it’s my husband’s favorite part of the season, so I always have to watch them. I should be concerned that he thoroughly enjoys watching people dreams be crushed in 90 seconds on tv, but I’m really not LOL.

I remember somebody was saying, American Idol is actually two shows. “American” and “Idol”. You get to see all sorts of Americans at audition rounds. Down to final 12, “Idol” starts.

  33. Remember how last year Fox reran all of Season 7 in the week leading up to the Season 8 premiere? Wonder if they will do that again…

    What about Michael Castro?

I thought we heard that he was eliminated.

  34. Aw, sookie sookie now. I’m pumped!

I’m gunning for y’all in the pool this year! :)

  35. “Okay, I’m officially getting psyched for the new season. And now that I’ve been through AI once and have already attached to a couple season 8 peeps, I think I’ll be able to enjoy it more as I won’t be attaching like that again any time soon. That is the way it works, right?”

No, most fans of the show move on and find a new fave and dump their old ones. I said after S7, I wouldn’t get attached and then there was Adam Lambert. I’m still sort of pissed with AI for getting rid of Paula so I’m going to try to be way less invested. I honestly doubt anyone is going to be on Adam’s level but I’ll keep an open mind. But I still seriously doubt it. I’m actually more interested in the audition rounds than the show itself this season. I’ll definitely be tuning in for the ep. with Neil Patrick Harris as a guest judge. But I’m not enthused about Ellen joining the show. Don’t think it will work well at all.

  36. This will probably be the year that NCIS overtakes AI in ratings, that’s my prediction. AI is definitely going to see another ratings drop IMO.

Is this true ? How come I did not remember any of this ? In prime time ?

i saw Kris!!!! S8 is the best!!!!

S8 was the best because of KRIS .

  39. S8 was the best because of KRIS

THIS. And I’m very excited to see Kris’s promo soon. Last season, the one with Carrie and David was amazing and stylishly done.

Best (possible) news yet. Keeping my fingers crossed. I absolutely hated the top 36 format last year. Blech.

It was on the FOX REALITY Channel. I was hoping they would re-broadcast season 8. I haven’t been checking. They did a maraton run of Season 7 which finished on the night, I believe, that season 8 began. I never thought season 8 would take me over as it did. I thought it would be Lambert, but it turned out to be a quiet kid from Arkansas that won my heart.

They do dump their old ones? I don’t. :) I still love my favorites.. For example, Cookie and Taylor Hicks. :)

Thanks, I have to find out if I have that channel or not. Hopefully you guys here will tell if S8 will be repeated.

  44. You never forget your first real AI love. I still smile when I hear or see Taylor. Season 5 was a great, fun year. The best year ever and I’ve been around for all seasons. Season 7 had lots of talent too. I liked Michael and Carly, and loved Cookie. This year I’m back in deep Idol fandom with Adam. You can love more than one. I think Taylor and Adam will be favorites of mine forever, but I’m open to season 9. Let the show begin.

  45. Tony

The guy in commercial 2 sucks.

When they finally showed him on his American idol audition on TV, I wasn’t interested anymore.
