  1. Tell me this list is a joke. Dear god, how dreadful – except for Crystal, who I expect to wipe the floor with her choice. Anyone with lactose intolerance should prepare themselves for Mike’s no doubt mega-serving of cheese with his choice.

  2. what about the TUrbanator..I hope he picks something terrible.

I don’t know that I like these choices to much.

  3. excited for siobhan… and surprisingly katie

what happened to tim urban? lol

  4. This list is pretty awful. For some reason I especially hate that we have heard several of these songs multiple times on Idol already.

Wonder why Tim is off the list? Did they forget to let him perform in the dress rehearsal? LOL

  5. wtf is paige singing against all odds?
and aaron singing don’t wanna miss a thing?

as if these two stupid songs havent been overdone on idol already

  6. Paige Miles
    Agaist All Odds

Has anybody ever done this song on AI and not had an epic trainwreck? That song really needs to be banned.

Somebody must like her though, because she keeps getting to sing near the end of the show so she’s not forgotten.

    Crystal Bowersox
    Bobby McGee

Crystal, babe, I love you, I love “Bobby McGee” and I love Janis, but I think that you have just made a major mis-step. How is this not going to be total karaoke? Crystal pulled a total Janis last week and it worked because it was not a Janis song. It was a creative re-invention. What on earth is she going to do with this song to “make it her own”? Yikes.

WTH is this theme anyway? This is a total random collection of songs.

    Katie Stevens
    Big Girls Don’t Cry

Great choice. I kept wanting Megan to sing this last year. Fergie has no range, so Katie should kill this. Although, maybe she isn’t quirky enough. Will this work as a pageant song? Okay, maybe it’s not a great choice.

  7. please tell me this is fake. what a horrible list. bye bye andrew. I had so much hope in you.

  8. Katie’s pick makes me think that is the lame brand of snark that top idol spews instead of actual picks.

  9. Bl**dy Hell .. there goes Aaron again with his way too old for him songs .. lol

and I agree that big Mike is really going for the cheesfest .. he’s after the female vote for sure .. let’s hope there is’t a theme week where he can sing that dreadful “You’re Having My Baby” song

I take it Tim Urban’s going to be silent this week . lol

  10. I’m assuming this is performance order?

But hot damn. They should have kept the Teen Idols theme!

This is a load of crap, crap, crap.

  11. Yikes. This sounds like a train wreck about to happen. Paige singing Against all Odds is only surpassed in sucky song choice by Katie singing Big Girls Don’t Cry (if I’m thinking of the right version….(Frankie Valli?).

Only good news is this CA girl is in NY tonight and gets to watch the show with you guys and snark ih real time. Woot!

  12. Why don’t they just repeat an episode from Season 3? Did they just give them a list of 11 songs?

Please let Casey sing Celine Dion’s The Power of Love and not the Huey Lewis one.

Are we sure this isn’t fake?

  13. 5 bazillion Billboard #1 songs and THIS… is what they chose? What kind of song list did they have to start with?

Crystal’s is right in her wheelhouse and so is Mike’s. Nobody chooses Against All Odds voluntarily… do they? Ugh.

  14. my top 3 is pretty much set. Didi/Siobhan/Crystal. The rest? you’re kidding me, right? I’m having a terrible Scott Savol with his sunglasses and creep factor coming back to me just seeing against all odds as a song choice, regardless who its for. this has the potential to be a trainwreck.

  15. Although it fits into the “this-song-has-been-done-too-much” category, I actually like Tim’s choice the best… *runs and hides* hehe

  16. Wow!! Siobhan picked such a cool song!! Another moment coming up everybody! Awesome!!!

  17. Wonder which “Big Girls Don’t Cry” Katie is singing? My first thought was the old one, not the Fergie one.

That would be a hoot, though, if Katie was the only one singing a current song…

  18. alright friends I need help with who the artist is.. why it’s always left off, I’ll never know.

but who sings Against all odds? Google says Phil Collins and Mariah Carey.

and the Letter? Joe Cocker or Hoobastank?

and good luck with Don’t Wanna Miss a thing, aaron. [eye roll smiley] do we have smileys?

  19. Songs done to death on this show:
Tim Urban – “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” – usually well done
Paige Miles – “Against All Odds” – usually epic trainwreck
Aaron Kelly – “I Don’t Wanna Miss a. Thing” – Can go either way depending on the skill of the performer.
Michael Lynche – “When a Man Loves a Woman” – Mayor McCheese
Andrew Garcia – “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” – Didn’t Gladys sing this herself on the show one time?
Casey James – “Power of Lover” – Which version. If it’s the Huey Lewis version it would be the first time. Porbably the Jennifer Rush/Celine song of the same name.
Siobhan Magnus – “Superstition” – Almost every season. Is this her second freakin’ pimp spot?

    First timers?

    Lee DeWyze – “The Letter”
    Crystal Bowersox – “Bobby McGee”
Katie Stevens – “Big Girls Don’t Cry”
Didi Benami – “You’re No Good”

  20. wtf is paige singing against all odds?
and aaron singing don’t wanna miss a thing?

as if these two stupid songs havent been overdone on idol already

I think these might be the two most played songs on Idol ever at 5 and 6 times respectively.

Timmy Singing Queen??? How is he gonna pull this off? I’m sure he’ll sing the Michael Buble version and fail miserably.

  21. Tim is there now

thanks MJ .. although having just read his song spoiler I kind of wish he’d remained missing .. lol

This one has car crash written all over it .. Memo to Mr Mercury .. get ready to do a bit of turning in your grave tonight

  22. a boring song list for a snore of a season. The most important performance yet for many of these contestants to get them on the $tour$ and this is the list. FAIL.

  23. thanks

    IM INCREDIBLY DISSAPOINTED

OLD SONGS-nothing pisses me off more

Katie gets bonus points in my book for doing a CURRENT song

  24. I think that these song choices are so horrifying that I’m going to bypass this show entirely tonight and catch the recaps later. This just verified that this season is an entire snooze. I have a season 3 DVD of Mad Men that looks more promising to hold my interest this evening… I can watch this whole 2 hour episode in 25 minutes max later. :)

  25. Wonder which “Big Girls Don’t Cry” Katie is singing? My first thought was the old one, not the Fergie one.

Could be either one. Both songs went to number 1 on the Hot 100.

  26. LOL, this list is actually pretty funny. Good thing is that I know most of these songs since multiple past contestants have covered them… but that’s not exactly a good thing! I lol’d especially at “Against All Odds.”

If this list is true, I’m actually pretty excited to see Katie tonight… I wonder what she’ll do with that song.

  27. Well, Mark Chestnut did record “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing”, so hopefully Aaron is doing the country version. Although, the country version isn’t as good. Doesn’t have the same emotional impact IMO.

  28. First timers?

    Lee DeWyze – “The Letter”
    Crystal Bowersox – “Bobby McGee”
Katie Stevens – “Big Girls Don’t Cry”
Didi Benami – “You’re No Good”

How could you forget the great rendition of You’re No Good from Kristy Lee Cook.
Altough they were not done in competition, Carly and Michael John did “The Letter” in the S7 finals and on S8.

  29. Bl**dy Hell .. there goes Aaron again with his way too old for him songs .. lol

Didn’t Allison do this last year? Aaron and Allison were both 16 doing this, but I don’t think anyone said Allison was doing a song to old for her

  30. Katie gets bonus points in my book for doing a CURRENT song

I’d agree if I didn’t hate Big Girls Don’t Cry with a passion, add onto the fact that Katie is singing it, and I’m 99% sure I’ll hate it.

Hey maybe she’ll do the Four Season’s Big Girls Don’t Cry…I love that song, but then it wouldn’t be current.

  31. I think I might switch to Lost at 9:00 for the first time this season. Tim should be entertaining (please dance around the stage like Taylor Hicks thankyew). Aaron is going to be singing about lying in bed with a woman? Really? I feel like I need to go watch Cookie’s version of IDWMAT to pre-cleanse my brain.

  32. How could you forget the great rendition of You’re No Good from Kristy Lee Cook.

My memory sometimes tries to protect me from past horrors.

  33. Apparently Paige didn’t get the memo that she’s not supposed to sing that song. Bye bye.

  34. I think these might be the two most played songs on Idol ever at 5 and 6 times respectively.

Just about. “Against All Odds” will become the #1 tonight at 7, and “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” will be joining “I Have Nothing” and “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” at #6.

Gaaaaaaaah! These song choices pretty much universally suck, at first look. (Then again, on that criteria, I would have dismissed Kris’s ANS on the similar night while, mind you, feeling out the rest correctly as uninspired, so I’ll bank on at least one being better than I expect)

Even Siobhan’s choice… look, I love her, and she could make things interesting. But “Superstition” (and basically the majority of the Stevie Wonder catalog) is pretty stylized; the chance for karaoke in the way of “Think” is just high, high, high. Argh!

  35. I may regret this, but I’m kind of looking forward to Andrew…

How in the heck is Miley going to mentor them when most of the songs are older than her? I was hoping the one good thing about her mentoring would be current songs, but I guess not:(

  36. mj, did your friend not get in to give you spoilers directly?

He decided not to go when he learned how early he’d need to show up…

  37. All we’re short is someone singing “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” and this would be the most cliched Idol episode of all time.

  38. Paige is safe. No one has ever been eliminated singing Against All Odds. People like that song.

  39. I love Andrew’s choice…but not Andrew singing it. “Heard it through the grapevine” makes me think of my Dad and the fact that I’m pretty sure I’ve had the entire CCR collection drilled into memory for the rest of my life.

Andrew’s slow, more than likely lackluster version isn’t going to make me jump up and down.

  40. Katie gets bonus points in my book for doing a CURRENT song

I’m confused. Has someone covered this recently? Or is it a new song with the same name?

  41. Also, I think this show is going to be a big, giant trainwreck. I just can’t look away…

  42. mj:

He decided not to go when he learned how early he’d need to show up…

What time did he have to show up?

  43. So Siobhan goes last again. I wonder if she’s not getting as many votes as the producers thought?

  44. Paige is safe. No one has ever been eliminated singing Against All Odds. People like that song.

A fact which introduces sudden existential angst of massive proportions…

  45. crystal is going to be more of the same. No surprise there. Actually no surprise out of any of them. THEY ALL SUCK. Last week I think the judges gave them all a pass and wasn’t to harsh. This week, they will get the full force of all the criticism

Folks this was done on purpose to push Crystal’s standings IMO. She is ok but nothing really that makes me want to buy her CD. She’ll fizzle out just like Tracy Chapman did.

This is the Year American Idol Died.

  46. Didn’t Allison do this last year? Aaron and Allison were both 16 doing this, but I don’t think anyone said Allison was doing a song to old for her

I though it was too old for Allison too .. along with when she sang Hot Stuff .. I liked Allison but thought both songs were too old for her.

  47. First timers?

    Lee DeWyze – “The Letter”
    Crystal Bowersox – “Bobby McGee”
Katie Stevens – “Big Girls Don’t Cry”
Didi Benami – “You’re No Good”

Kristy Lee Cook did “You’re No Good”, no? And “The Letter” was done by Michael Johns & Carly Smithson in season’s 7 AND 8, as well as numerous times during Hollywood week

And Casey is singing Luther? This should be interesting. lol

I thought it was Huey Lewis.

  49. She’ll fizzle out just like Tracy Chapman did.

Tracy Chapman went gold in three different decades….

  50. I’m confused. Has someone covered this recently? Or is it a new song with the same name?

New Song Same Name. Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas sings the new, vastly inferior Big Girls Don’t Cry.

  51. Remember, AI has a very very small list to choose from of ‘cleared songs..’ and if you wait for a song to be cleared you can get screwed. Still, I’m disappointed, Siobhan already did superstition, and I didn’t think it was all that great the first time around. bummer.

  52. I thought The Letter had been performed before, but I guess not. Daughtry auditioned with it, and here’s Bo Bice and Constantine singing it (with Aaron Kelly, lmao!)

Carly and Michael sang “The Letter” on the S7 finale.

  53. I thought it was Huey Lewis.

Luther had a song called power of love. we’ll find out which one it is!

  54. Aaron is going to do the version Josh Gracin did season 2. Its more of a soft country ballad. Perfect for him.

Those song picks look like they were rushed decisions for the most part. So many that have been done on Idol before.

  55. LOL – OMG at these song choices! (Maybe this is the week they’ll bring their unique musicality to their performance to make it their own?….yeah….)

  56. I’ve got it. The whole Miley thing is a clever hoax and actually they’ve got the lead singer from Slipknot mentoring them and all of these songs will actually be performed in the style of Slipknot, complete with masks. It will be the Best Idol Show ever!!

  57. Remember, AI has a very very small list to choose from of ‘cleared songs..’ and if you wait for a song to be cleared you can get screwed.

Also, there have been over 1,000 performances on this show, of course there are going to be repeats. I understand not liking someone picking Against All Odds, but complaining that a song was sung by two contestants on a finale night?!?

  58. This one has car crash written all over it .. Memo to Mr Mercury .. get ready to do a bit of turning in your grave tonight

My initial reaction was just that, and I was happy about it! Especially if the above is the performance order and he’s in the death spot (#2). BUT – then I listened to it on You Tube and there is actually no range required for this song, and it’s FUN! So he may actually end up getting lots of votes, especially if he ditches the guitar and actually interacts with the ladies in the crowd.

  59. I though it was too old for Allison too .. along with when she sang Hot Stuff .. I liked Allison but thought both songs were too old for her.

    Fair enough.

Aaron is going to do the version Josh Gracin did season 2. Its more of a soft country ballad. Perfect for him.

Hmmm…this could actually work for him – there are definite vocal similarities

  60. Interesting that Lee picked “The Letter” the week that Alex Chilton died. I wonder if he knew?

  61. Jennifer Rush also sang a song called Power of Love .. a big power ballad .. but I doubt Casey will be singing that one

  62. gangreen29:

Paige is safe. No one has ever been eliminated singing Against All Odds. People like that song.

I don’t like Against All Odds. Wait let me rephrase that …. I actually HATE it. It’s been so overdone, and no one has ever done a good job of it. They really need to ban it. Yikes, it looks to be one of many trainwrecks tonight.

  63. Still, I’m disappointed, Siobhan already did superstition, and I didn’t think it was all that great the first time around. bummer.

She didn’t do Superstition, I think you may be refering to “Living for The City”

  64. Ugh, terrible list. Very low expectations for tonight. Surprise me, Didi, Siobhan, Crystal, Lee!

  65. I’m hoping for a Kris – Ain’t No Sunshine surprise tonight. I remember the spoilers from Top 9 lasy season were disappointing, hoping one of these kids pulls out something similar to that. I think Lee, Casey or Didi all have the potential for it. And I totally expect Siobhan and Crystal to do well, even though I’m not thrilled with their choices.

  66. I’m obviously on a different planet than everyone on MJ’s tonight, because I actually like all of these song choices! I think they each picked a song that can really work for them. They will need to bring it in terms of performance, and not do anything crazy with the songs, but I’m liking this list and looking forward to the show. Oh, it’s starting now! Off to see it.

  67. Are we sure this isn’t pick a song that’s been done to death week?

I thought The Letter had been performed before, but I guess not.

Maybe you’re thinking of Rock Star? It was JD’s break out performance. Hee, I think we can guarantee that Lee won’t be doing the Joe Cocker/JD version, unless he’s really been hiding his stage presence light under a bushel.

I’d like to go one season without Superstition. Come on, Siobhan. Ugg.

  68. Interesting that Lee picked “The Letter” the week that Alex Chilton died. I wonder if he knew?

If Lee mentions Chilton on the show, it should make this trainwreck moderately worthwhile

  69. Luther had a song called power of love. we’ll find out which one it is!

My guess is it’s the Huey Lewis version. That seems to fit Casey better than Luther. OK – I’m really off to watch now!

  70. The only absolutely overdone song IMO on this list in I don’t Wanna Miss a Thing. I had to listen to Westlife’s cover of Against All Odds to remember the song and I think Paige could do it. Aerosmith song and Aaron? Yikes.

But yeah, I’m not going to blame the contestants for the song choices. I was not present when they picked their songs, who knows what were other songs on the list.

  71. I wish they were given a consultant that helped them chose songs. Argh to 90% of these.

I like Crystal, but if she wasn’t already, she is now officially predictable.

And really Andrew? I heard it through the grapevine? Done, done, done.

Lee, dude. Way to step out of your comfort zone there.

Michael is obviously just trying to make Kara cry again with When a Man Loves A Woman.

Not a huge fan of hers, but Siobahn could bring it after a meh night with that song.

  72. I think the songlist just gave me diarrhea.

Andrew: No. I don’t see this not sucking.
    Tim: LOL. Ouch.
Aaron: Arg. I hated David’s and Allison’s performances of this, so hopefully Aaron can change it up. I don’t think he will.
    Paige: That’s not gonna work.
Katie: I would’ve rather heard this song from Didi.

Siobhan, I like the choice :).

  73. These choices aren’t cliche at all!

Excellent choices guys! Way to keep up the stellar quality of the season thus far.

These choices plus Miley Cyrus = GOLD.

  74. Ok so Miley showed up in her booty shorts…..

    Lee is freakin’ AWESOME!!! Woot!

  75. These choices aren’t cliche at all!

Excellent choices guys! Way to keep up the stellar quality of the season thus far.

These choices plus Miley Cyrus = GOLD.

    LOL

sorry Crystal, if I was voting, you’d lose my vote with that utterly predictable choice

  76. Lee sounds like that grey hair dude that won-Taylor Hicks-Soul Patrol Part 2.

  77. I actually agreed with Simon tonight about Siobhan who is really getting on my nerves. Please. don’t. scream.

But I think it’s super contradictory/hypocritical for Simon Legree to bash everyone for being too “old fashioned” — because when ever they sing a current song, he hates it!

Look folks, this is not the great Singer-Songwriter Era of other epochs. You want melodies, bridges, sing-along choruses? You go to the past, not to the post-hip-hop period. These kids are not going to make an album of oldies, but that’s what they’ve got to sing to show their chops. Even some of the better songs of the period don’t go over too well, with just a few exceptions — “Crazy,” “The Story.”

And the ones who could handle it well tonight, and who I think may have the MUSICIANSHIP to make a career of whatever music they chose
are Crystal, Casey, Michael and maybe Lee.

  78. Wow, what a waste of two hours :(

Crystal was best; but duhhh, what a predictable choice. And a little off in the high register.

Casey was surprisingly good; just has to get a little more stage presence.

Agree with Simon on Lee and Siobhan. Siobhan; just because you can scream doesn’t mean you should do it every time- it does get old.
Miley wasn’t as bad as I thought she’d be; but WTH with the outfit??! Have a little respect for the role you are in! Yikes.

Can not believe how awful Paige and Andrew were. I didn’t think Tim was a bad singer, just cheesy.

  79. I thought The Letter had been performed before, but I guess not.

It was done in Season 4, in the group round by Bo, Constantine and another older rocker, also named Aaron Kelly.
Thanks, mj for the videos, after listening I see that the versions of “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Power of Love” were different songs with the same titles as other songs. So these were first time performances on Idol

  80. Jennifer Rush also sang a song called Power of Love .. a big power ballad .. but I doubt Casey will be singing that one

Trenyce did that “Power of Love” during Season 2, Top 8 week. That confused me too, when I heard Casey was singing “Power of Love”!

I completely blocked out any memory of Kristy Lee Cook singing “You’re No Good”.
