My favorite performance of the night was Alex Preston’s flip of Rihanna’s hit song “Stay.”
The stripped down arrangement and gorgeous melody was a perfect vehicle for Alex’s quirky phrasing. The cool little vocal trill he did on the last line of the chorus gave me a few chills.
The tune was picked by the judges for Alex, so it gave them a particular thrill when he sang it well.
“I knew you would sing the heck out of that song, said Jennifer Lopez. “It was all yours,” she said, remarking how Alex’s version didn’t bring Rihanna’s original to mind at all. Harry thought it was really strong. Keith loved the tiny moments in the song that moved the audience. He loved it.
