Yet another singing competition is entering the fray. This one is from American Idol judge and constant name dropper, Randy Jackson:

EXCLUSIVE: Randy Jackson has sold a siblings singing competition show to MTV. Basing itself off groups with siblings like the Jackson 5, the Beach Boys, Hanson and The Jonas Brother, the untitled series will feature groups with siblings in them competing against each other. The Jackson-produced show, which is early stages of development, is getting ready to start casting and looking for family bands and groups, a source said. The American Idol judge’s Dream Merchant 21 Entertainment has partnered on the project with DiGA, the production company of former top MTV executives Tony DiSanto and Liz Gately, which is backed by Ben Silverman’s Electus. The sibling series expands Jackson’s relationship with MTV, where he executive produces America’s Best Dance Crew, currently in its seventh season.

OY. Nigel Lythgoe’s production company has something coming up too–Opening Act for the E! Channel. It’s getting pretty crazy up in here!  With American Idol, X Factor, twice yearly The Voice, Duets and The Winner Is.. Throw in the Glee Project? That’s kinda sorta a singing competition. I’m past the saturation point on singing shows.

Also, according to Deadline, Randy’s deal with Idol is up this year. Maybe Idol’s newly reconfigured parent company, Core, will decide to ditch him in favor of somebody younger and more famous.

I liked the sing off, but in general the better groups weren’t the ones with siblings.

  • too-cool-for-school

Another one?? Excuse me for a moment.

    (NOOOOO, JUST NO!! WHYYYYY!!!!?? GAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!)

    Ok, I’m good now.
Groups w/ siblings, huh? That might be the least interesting concept yet. Someone please make it stop.

    Make it stop.

If it gets Randy off Idol, I’m all for it. I hardly ever turn on MTV, so I’m in little danger of being subjected to it.

Time for a new TV network – 24 hour singing competitions – all day – every day

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

Do you know what’s the worst part of it? We’ll see them all.

WHY RANDY? WHY? That is not a good idea. Hmmmmm……I wonder if Colton will audition with his little sister.

  • http://twitter.com/butterflydm Diana

Oh, goodness. Another singing show? I can’t even keep track of the names of all the ones that are already on. The market is getting so super-saturated with singing shows.

  • Anonymous

Not me.  I still haven’t watched The Voice or X-Factor, I think I can avoid yet another lame show on a channel that hasn’t been relevant since the early 90′s.

  • Anonymous

I’m just fine with Idol and X-Factor. Fox wins in my household Wednesday and Thursday nights. I can’t take another singing competition show.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

yeah, with Randy producing it will be too lame even for zombies starving for entertainment.

Pretty please??? Can we PLEASE make this happen?? I don’t care who they get to replace him, I just hope they ditch him.

From now on, with any new singing show announcement, I’ll just pretend they don’t exist. I can’t get my blood pressure up anymore on how stupid and lazy network execs are these days. :P

This kind of feels like Randy’s indication that he’s ready to move away from Idol. Please, follow up on that feeling.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Randy is worse than useless on Idol with his idiotic sayings and inconsistent ‘judging’. He was just useless when he said “dawg” at lot and didn’t do much else, so he’s gotten a lot worse. Please don’t offer Randy another contract, Idol.

  • Incipit

Oh man, I need to read more carefully. I thought for a split second there that Randy Jackson may have had a good idea.  Do an end run on Cowell’s groups, take advantage of the amazing close harmonies that siblings can produce for great sounding music, and just incidentally – start to inch him off of Idol! Heh.

Buzz! Wrong. He wants the siblings to compete against each other. Oh, the Drama Rama, the manufactured rivalry, the hurt feelings, the tears, the blown vocal cords trying to imitate Randy’s favorite singers (that one should never sing), the whackaloon judging, the new catch phrases, the waste of voices, and the waste of time. IMO.

    ~le sigh~ That’s the Randy Jackson I know, and really can’t stand.

MTV singing shows are HORRIBLE! Remember that one that Diddy did a few years ago? The Winner hasn’t been heard of since. I’m still trying to figure out why America’s Best Dance Crew is still on….
However, I did enjoy Making The Band 3 and still believe Danity Kane was one of the most talented things to ever come out of MTV.

Let me second that.  I think I just might do a happy dance if they do!

  • Chris

If MTV is crazy enough to buy it, he may as well take their money. Randy is probably a few years from being Paula.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ACMLXLYSSX73RNYQOUZWSO2I4U Enough already!

Enough already, lololol…  Just what we need – another crapfest of a singing show w/an Idol connection

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F3XJE5GRAUMYR7Y5RYZUW7SC4U md

He’s hoping to find the next “great” Michael Jackson.

Does Randy have a more appealing sibling?

Oh no!!!!  Can we please just bring back mimes????

I liked the sing off, but in general the better groups weren’t the ones with siblings.

True.  And weren’t they always referred to as “modern-day Von Trapp singers?”

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

Next show to be pitched to network: Sexy crime scene investigators compete in singing contest while using advanced forensic techniques to solve murders.

It’ll blow away all competition, thanks to the plot arc in which a serial killer’s backstage weapon is 6″ spiked heels. Kinky shenanigans with guitar strings and the discovery that the sound techs really are kept in cages will compensate for a song roster that relies heavily on golden oldies.

I think there will be a whole lot of adoptions going on.

  • Anonymous

I thought that at first, too, but I think it’s just how it’s phrased, because you could also read it that it’s sibling groups and the groups are competing against each other (which is how I think it probably is).

  • Anonymous

I might actually watch it if Randy wasn’t attached to it.  Yo.

  • Guest

I love how people act like this is the first time idol isn’t the lone singing competition. The Singing Bee, The One, Star Search, Nashville Star, The Sing Off, American Juniors, ect all aired at one point since idol has aired.

Hopefully this means Randy will move on. I think it’s time.

Have you heard?  There is a new show call couples, where couples sing.  Another one called Players, where professional athletes sing.  And there is another called breakups, were couples who have broken up reunite to sing.  Then there is …

They forgot the Osmond Brothers!  This may be a way to get Randy off the show.  I had suggested Will Smith.  Indeed, there are too many of these song related Reality Shows.  Enough is enough is enough…

Honestly, nobody says you have to actually watch any of the shows.  I don’t think adding singing competitions has eroded Idol anymore than all of the “Survivor” type shows that came out after Survivor became a hit eroded their ratings.    Same with Millionaire.   Who really says, “You know what?  I am done watching Idol – because there are too many singing shows out there!”  Really doesn’t make much sense :)

Most of the shows will die quickly.  Some of the shows are just novelties.

If Idol was the only show in town, its ratings would still be down.   As long as it remains solid, FOX is going to air it.   To me, Idol is not likely to be a show that is going to die because it starts pulling in CW Network type ratings.  It’s going to die because the main players just aren’t going to want to do it anymore at some point.  Who knows when that point will be.

WTF!!!!!!! Another one? I already have singing competition fatigue syndrome. lols
    Not another one!!!!!!!!!

I will stick with X-Factor, Idol and The Glee Project. :) The Voice was getting boring this season so I didn’t watch it live all the time. Just watch MJ’s clips on here. So thanks MJ for keeping up with all these shows. I watch Duet’s clips here too because I don’t watch the show live either.

So did anyone watch The Glee Project 2 online yet? It’s on the Xfinity.com site. This show is so refreshing. It would do so well if it was on FOX. I’m in love with the show all over again. The format is great!

Well if Randy gets this show can he leave idol? lols Ok a part of me doesn’t want him to leave because he is the only original judge that has been there since the beginning. Well I guess we have several options now. :)

  • sue

Yeah that’s true, never thought about it that way. I guess idol was the only show that I thought that actual careers would follow. OH wait we had Rock Star Supernova too. lols  Yep they have always been around. I guess there are just more shows competing with idol now. :)

  • sue

OH and that show on Bravo last summer about song writers. lols  Would love a reunion show with all ex-dols on it.  The Ultimate Idol, nah just kidding. No one would do that. haha

  • Incipit

10DogMom, you may be quite right – I read it again, and I could take it either way.  The group competition makes sense, the other way is completely whack – which doesn’t rule Randy out. *snerk*

A sibling group contest? Sounds more Disney than MTV to me.

I’m okay with new singing realitys as long as the promotion of the show is realistic, meaning that both the audience and the contestants should be aware of the diminishing chances of “making it” just because you happened to be casted in a reality. And now I’m kinda fearing the promo and praise to go along the lines of the hyperbole “you are the next jonas brothers! the next Hanson!” and then after the show its crickets chirping everywhere.

I hope the Clarke Bros. are on it if we have to have another one.  They were on a cmt based singing show once but I didnt watch it.  Now they go by Sons of Sylvia.  I thought it was interesting  Idol bought them on that one night for Skylar, the intensive staring fiddle player and brother.  There is one more brother.  They were in Carries original band after she won idol.  Maybe this indicates Randy is leaving.  About time.

Don’t they already have a record deal? I know they have toured with a bunch of big names.

“Don’t they already have a record deal? I know they have toured with a bunch of big names.”

They were with Interscope, but I believe they were dropped earlier this year … Luckily for their wallets, they’re great instrumentalists — I seem to recall at least Ashley being on Idol as a specialty backup/demi-soloist both before and after they got their contract, although I could be misremembering that.

I loved their cd, but I guess it didn’t sell. They have been on some major tours — and got a boost in writing songs that seemed to me as if they could be popular because Ryan Tedder’s their cousin. Guess that the popularity hasn’t happened, though.

I’d actually would like to see Fox come up with a singing show but not a contest but all the Idols (non-winners) of the past to guest sing. Just so the viewers can see and hear them again. No judges. Just show viewers how well they can sing and where they are now and what they’ve been up to. They can get paid for guesting and might just get another opportunity whatever. Would really love a show to see past Idols again.

  • Karen C

I’d like to see this as well, even if they made it another contest. Or what I’d really like to see is a reunion series, where they spent a week with every season’s finalists, even the winners, and allow those with original music to do their music, or to do a cover, like on the show if they choose.  I think this would be an excellent summer series.
