John Mayer will be hitting the road this summer with his first tour in 3 years. Even better news–American Idol winner, Phillip Phillips will open for the singer/songwriter/guitarist on most of his dates!

After a couple of warm-up dates in April, the tour takes a break until the big Summerfest festival in Milwaukee on July 6.

This is a big comeback tour for Mayer, who had to take an extended vocal hiatus due to vocal issues. There will be a ton of buzz around this tour!

Not sure what dates Phillip will be playing, but here’s the schedule. Phillip is confirmed for the big Rock In Rio festival in Rio De Janeiro on September 21.

This is a sweet gig, indeed, for Phillip!

I have already paid attention to this. :P

Congrats to Philip!! that’s really awesome. i’m pained that John Mayer is not coming to my city this time :(

I for one will drop the luck thing when he has a hit with a song he had a hand in writing. With that said, he’s clearly working very hard. I wouldn’t take anything away from him in that regard.

Jimmy Iovine showed last night that either you cut it with him or you get out of his way. Phillip has continued to earn his credibility and respect as an artist with Jimmy by making good decisions, for example, with his CD. Phillip earned that Billboard cover with Jimmy just like he earned this tour with John Mayer.

SOMETHING LIKE “CALL ME MAYBE” OR “WE ARE NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER GETTING BACK TOGETHER”. THANKS, I PREFER “MAN ON THE MOON” OR “HOLD ON” BETTER.

When I saw the smile on his face when he was at Red Rocks I promised I’d go see him there (I live on the east coast) when he plays there! It arrived sooner than expected! Making plans :-)

My thoughts on Phillip & the other Idol winners:

I think one thing we can all agree on is that the Idol adventure is so demanding (Feb-May live shows, then summer tour) that if you don’t have a strong work ethic or if you don’t want IT with all your being, you are going to be left by the wayside. And as many have found out, once you win (or get close)…the work REALLY begins.

I salute all these young people for the arduous hours of practice & travel & promotion (which is very hard for some) that it takes to make a name for themselves on a national stage. And our Idol winners do seem to remain true to themselves (and not get giant egos) after leaving AI. Maybe that’s part of what America does right..we bring them into our living rooms each week and weed out the ones whose ‘ego’ turns us off!

I wonder if Phillip’s guitarist, Erroll Cooney, was involved at all in this match-up. A couple months ago someone posted that Erroll had toured with John Mayer. Perhaps Erroll became good friends with John during the tour. Although from the interview on YouTube, it appears that John based his decision on the song “Home.” To me it sounded like John thought Phillip had also written the song.

not trying to take anything away from P2… but couldn’t you say that about all the previous idol winners also?… while i don’t follow most of them closely, they all strike me as being nice people who work hard, showed up for all the promo and PR stuff etc… in some part isn’t that just the way the AI model operates for the reigning champ?

I think P2 had some say in his producer and I know he had say in GGG being on the album. Phillip makes good artistic choices. I think his big plus is he knows who he is as an artist.
I remember when folks were saying he couldn’t even do the tour properly because of all his medical issues. So far in less than a year he’s had major surgery, never missed a show and basically does a concert a day (and will until September). Not saying other Idol folks don’t work hard but I’m sure the label is impressed with the guy’s work ethic.

I did laugh at the John Mayer interview. He seemed very clueless about Home and seemed pretty clueless about P2 in general. Although he did know he came from Idol. Well they’ll have lots of time to get to know each other on the tour!

Phillip Phillips to Tour with John Mayer

What’s left to do after having a largely successful debut single and album? Ask Phillip Phillips.

Why do people keep saying “John picked Phillip”? The artist has no control over that! Happy to hear of their pairing, though. I’m fans of both, more-so John than Phil, but Phil has potential.
