Phillip Phillips Cancels Remaining College Tour Dates Due to Illness (UPDATED)

OH NO! Phillip Phillips has cancelled the rest of his college tour, due to illness, according to a press release posted by one of campuses, University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.

Singer-guitarist Phillip Phillips — winner of the eleventh season of the Fox television series American Idol — was to appear in concert May 6 with special guest Gin Wigmore. On May 5 the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire was notified that Phillips has cancelled the remainder of his spring tour due to illness.

He had 9 gigs remaining on his tour, which included a concert in Dublin, Ireland.

Phillip’s health issues have been well documented. Phillip was in severe pain throughout his run on American Idol due to a recurrence of kidney stones from a chronic problem. After he won the title, Philip went straight into surgery to have a kidney reconstructed. He’s been in seemingly good health since them.

There’s no word on whether his appearance on the May 16 Idol finale will be cancelled. Phillip is set to go on tour with John Mayer beginning in early July.

Whatever is ailing Phillip, here’s to a speedy recovery.

UPDATE: Phillip tweets:

According to a Hollywood Reporter source:

“His doctor said he has to get off the road. He was playing six shows a week, and it’s too much for him. His body doesn’t bounce back, and he’s been feeling run-down,” says the source.”

I just saw Phillip last night. He put on a 90 minute show at SunFest for an audience in the thousands! I had no idea he wasn’t well. He was crazy good. What a pro, at 22! I hope he recovers quickly.

I’m worried! I wish his camp would release some information about his condition or what’s going on. This is the guy who performed 40+ nights just a month after major surgery…so for him to cancel is major! I know people in his hometown…will see if there’s any local gossip.

  • weareallinnocent

    Sad. Best wishes.

  • tucker davis

That’s what’s weird…the last few videos we’ve seen of him he’s been dancing around like crazy. It looked like he was feeling great! Hope to hear some news soon.

  • Pat H

That’s a lot of dates to cancel. Sounds serious or like they already know he needs surgery.

Sorry to hear. I hope whatever it is can be overcome quickly.

Remember how he persevered through Idol in constant pain, although we (the audience) couldn’t tell? Amazing.

Ryan John, mix engineer on Phillips tour confirmed

@ryanojohn : Sunfest, West Palm Beach, FL phillips winning the night

?@saiq2004: @ryanojohn It’s true that the restof his tour was cancelled?

@ryanojohn: @saiq2004 it’s true, he just needs a bit of time off to get healthy, it was an incredibly tiring schedule

  • M.J. Mac

Somebody on twitter just posted that the head engineer from his road crew tweeted that it was a grueling schedule and he just needed some time off to rest and get healthy….hopefully that is true…he has been going…going…going since the middle of January. Not to mention how much he has been on the road since he started the Idol tour. I’m sure his doctors never had this schedule in mind when they performed surgery on him last summer.

  • Liteasy

He’s probably just exhausted and needs some down time. He’s been on the go every since Idol ended and going right into surgery, short recuperation and then on the road every since. It’s almost a year!

  • Incipit

Would probably be good if one of Phillip’s PR people addressed this soonest – when he has the mix engineer saying he just needs to “get heathy” – that leads to the conclusion that he is Not Heathy at the moment – the professional media people can put a better spin on whatever is causing so many cancelations to happen.

And Interscope may want to take better care of their cash cow – with a lighter schedule after this “bit of time off”, if he’s not yet physically up to the standard grueling pace to appear all over the place.

    Get better soon PP.

And the only dates officially cancelled are today’s and the Dublin’s one

  • girlygirl

Saw this on my twitter feed. Evidently this guy is one the crew members that’s been touring with P2

#it’s true, he just needs a bit of time off to get healthy, it was an incredibly tiring schedule

Yes, he replied my tweet, Ryan is his sound engineer

  • Anny_nanny

I hope it is planned procedures carried over from June to May, after it became clear that he has a dates from the beginning of June.
In any case praying for him and his health.
And I agree, someone should explain to the fans what happens to avoid the excitement and hype. He looked healthy and full of energy during the last show.

  • Anny_nanny

I won’t ask what happened to the Disqus AGAIN. This system is more stupid than my smartphone! *rolleyes* It is distracting and entertains me.

  • Trippn Cwy

Hopefully he will get the time he needs to get healthy. The year or more of constant touring/shows seems to be pretty standard for all the winners but with the added health issues its a wonder P2 lasted this long.

  • KelseyW

That’s sad to hear. Feel better soon Phillip! <3

I hope it isn't anything serious and that he just needs some good R&R.

  • M.J. Mac

I agree…it would be good to put out a statement, but that is his decision and his managements decision. If nothing else, it might calm down some people(fans) on twitter! lol! Some fans are acting like they are family members and deserve to be in the ‘know’….I just find that weird. Hopefully he will have a speedy recovery and get back to doing what he clearly seems to love.

  • Karen C

That concerns me, too. And it probably is a grueling schedule, but others do it under similar circumstances and are ok. He might need rest but that’s a lot of dates to cancel. Hopefully he’ll be better soon.

  • Fausto Karlaire

    LOL!!!! What was this dance?

  • Sally Smith

Sad to hear about this:( Praying it’s nothing serious and he’ll have a healthy quick recovery!!

  • sdmama

I was happy that he seemed to have made complete recovery from the surgery, but I was wrong. Sad to hear this, but it is remarkable to see how they are handling it. Phillip is giving 100% when he performs, and not making any fan wonder why he was so energy. At the same time he is taking precaution so that he won’t fall sick in the middle of fronting somebody else to leave hole in their schedule. It must be a tough choice to cancel his own show, and fronting somebody else, but I think they thought it would be better to drop his own shows than inconvenience John Mayer.

He is incredibly tough and responsible, I have nothing but a respect for this young man. — And his management, too, I suppose ;)

  • Kariann Hart

I hope the illness PP has had isn’t a life long disease. It would be terrible to think he’s healthy, schedule all these shows, and then have to cancel. I hope it is just a rest and relax situation. Praying for a quick recovery.

  • Bobbi Child

I was there last night at Sunfest…front row…and he was amazing. He definitely didn’t like he wasn’t feeling good. Whatever it is…I hope he feels better soon.

  • Happyhexer

My best wishes to Phillip for a speedy and full recovery. It’s a truism that one’s health is one’s wealth. Nothing is more important for Phillip than his health; everything else flows from that. Good luck, Phil!

  • Anny_nanny

    I agree.

  • Face

    shame he’s unwell, hope he’s better soon…
& shame on whomever has pressed ‘vote down’ on every single comment / messages wishing him well, a speedy recovery etc…
it’s fair enough to not like someone or their music etc… but to make the conscious effort to click ‘vote down’ on comments that are purely to hope a sick person makes a recovery / that it isn’t a serious illness… well that’s not just below the belt… but very childish and troll like…
and I say that as someone who is not a fan of P2…

  • fuzzywuzzy

At the moment, I really don’t think that there’s any suggestion that P2 needs surgery. It may be just a case of physical exhaustion and needing time to rest a bit before his big tour with John Mayer. I’m sure that a statement will be released soon.

  • Sassycatz

Even the healthiest person becomes run down or burnt out by a busy schedule. For P2, it sounds like he and his management have to be cognizant of his health and build in time in his schedule for a little more down time, routinely, and not wait until something comes up, only to have to cancel. It’s probably frustrating for him, since he’s young and ambitious, but as someone says above compared to your health, everything else is secondary.

  • justmefornow

Hope it’s nothing really serious and he just needs some rest.

. P2 has had a brutal schedule since Idol. I think they need to give him a long vacation before he goes on tour with John Mayer. For a low key guy, P2’s kind of a workaholic who doesn’t seem to want to do anything but play music.

    I want believe it :(

  • usedtobelucy

    Brilliant comment. That is all.

  • Laurkins

While I agree that fans are not family members, they are a big reason to why PP is where he is. An excellent musician does not go far in his fame without a fanbase. Consequently, it’s not wrong or an act of entitlement for fans to want a bit more of an update on the status of his health. Having said that, we all wish him the absolute best.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that stating that shows are canceled due to “illness” is enough detail for fans until a statement is made. P2 deserves some privacy as to the details of his illness, and fans are not friends in his real life, no matter how “close” they feel due to social media. So, they aren’t “entitled” or “deserve” to know anything more IMO.

  • girlygirl

Phillip’s schedule is not atypical. Pretty much every Idol winner has had a similar schedule in his/her first year off the show. It is also fairly typical of many artists who try to establish a fanbase by touring a ton and doing other promo.

The obvious difference is that Phillip has had serious health issues, so perhaps his team needs to take that more into account and not overschedule him. I haven’t been following him super closely, but from what I’ve noticed, it doesn’t seem like he has had much time off at all since he won Idol. Even the healthiest, hardiest person in the world is going to need the occasional break. And the last thing anyone should want is to push Phillip so hard that they endanger his health.

Hopefully this isn’t a serious illness and he just needs a little time off to recover. Wishing him a speedy recovery

    Phillip Phillips
Hey guys, due to doctor’s orders I have to reschedule my last tour dates. They will be rescheduled!
Looking forward to seeing you on Mayer!

If it’s true, this is sad :(

“The word from the Phillips camp is the dates had to be rescheduled due to exhaustion, dehydration, and kidney failure”

  • bridgette12

He’s going to have problems touring during the summer. The heat, the travel, stress and not getting enough sleep, is bad enough on someone who’s healthy, it’s a lot worse for someone with serious health issues. The big question is, if his kidney is failing, is he doing dialysis and will it get better.

    I tweeted to @lyndseyparker (Art’s Author):

Lyndsey, He really had a “kidney failure” ?

@lyndseyparker: “It is the same issues he has had before, from the little I know. He is going to be okay.”

  • standtotheright

Even for healthy people dehydration is no joke. For someone with outstanding kidney issues it can be brutal.
I really hope the team around him does as much as possible to monitor his health and to make him do that for himself. And I hope he has a full recovery.

  • jpfan2

He did fine on the Idol tour last summer. I’m assuming that opening for Mayer will be easier than head lining his own college shows. But his team need to get him more down time. I think after the Mayer gigs and the European promo, it’s time for a long, long rest. He can work on new songs and album #2.
His debut album has been a big success so there’s no need to kill himself touring and doing promo for his music.

  • CanadianLady

Really can’t say I’m surprised. I had been watching his schedule and noticing how heavy it’s been. One the seasoned singers I follow said recently that three shows in a row is enough before a day off. Has he been home other than a couple of days at Christmas? He needs to talk to the McCreery family about scheduling so you can still have a life.

  • bridgette12

Dehydration for someone with his health problem is certainly not a good thing. The big question would be, is his dehydration a symptom of his kidney problems reappearing or is it simply from something totally different that doesn’t have anything to do with kidneys.

  • girlygirl

exhaustion and dehydration are big issues for any artist, especially when doing a bunch of outdoor shows in the summer, but those are things that can be treated relatively easily with rest, staying out of the sun as much as possible, eating healthy, being smart about your schedule, etc. It’s the “kidney failure” part of this that would scare the crap out of me, especially given his past health issues.

  • bridgette12

Sounds like it’s going to take more than rest and a few i.v’s to make him better.

” “His doctor said he has to get off the road,” a source tells The Hollywood Reporter. “He was playing six shows a week, and it’s too much for him.”

The American Idol season-11 winner’s ongoing kidney issues — he had surgery last year to remove massive kidney stones — as well as a combination of exhaustion and dehydration have been slowing him down.

“His body doesn’t bounce back, and he’s been feeling run-down,” says the source.”

  • taylor

Kidney failure? That’s not something you want to mess around with.Dehydration and exhaustion happen from time to time for touring artists. That’s why you hear about artists cancelling a couple of shows, especially on these year long worldwide type tours. Cancelling a month of tour dates means it’s something more serious.

Artists have to be insured and labels can’t push people with health issues beyond what they can handle. (look at the current Michael Jackson case) I wonder if insurance stepped in here and made the label shut down the rest of P2’s tour dates.

Yikes, just saw the Mayer concert tour schedule. The concert dates are in the worst heat of the summer and are mostly in outside venues.

  • Barbara Rodriguez

The month off scares me too !! I really hope his team takes better care of his schedule !! Just watched the video from last night( Phillip looks like he has lost weight ) But being the true artist and professional he gave his all !

  • windmills

Feel better P2. I’m concerned that his health issues are rearing their ugly heads again.

Though his health is by far the most important thing here I do think P2 should eventually put out a statement where he shows more recognition of fan disappointment and the inconveniences fans may’ve been dealt because his show postponements. It’s just a PR thing and I’m sure he feels really bad about the postponements but his tweet sounds way too chipper.

But more than anything, get well P2.

Looking forward to seeing you all on on the John Mayer tour this summer!

  • fuzzywuzzy

Thanks for the update, MJ. It sounds like P2 is suffering from exhaustion rather than a specific illness, and after some time off and rest to recharge his batteries, he should be fine. I’m glad that he’s taking the advice of his doctor.

ETA: OK, I just read the yahoo report where kidney failure and dehydration were indicated. This sounds potentially more serious than just exhaustion.

Word is the dates had to be rescheduled due to exhaustion, dehydration, and kidney failure (all problems Phillip has had before)

  • usedtobelucy

And, of course, dehydration — which touring musicians, especially singers, are highly highly susceptible to, as we know — is really really bad for your kidneys, in particular.

So if your kidneys are struggling to begin with — surgically repaired, struggling to heal after surgery, congenitally challenged, overtaxed by bad touring-young-guy-musician and tv-reality-show-marathon eating, and so on…Oy. He obviously needs to be quite careful with his health.

Get a good solid rest and line up excellent feeding, watering and health mentoring and assistance for your next tour, PhilPhil.

  • lila6089

I could see that he was sweating quite a bit in the videos of his recent Florida concert (May 4th I believe), so perhaps that triggered the dehydration.

  • breakdown

Hope he gets well soon! Even if it’s just exhaustion and dehydration, these can be serious issues if not treated properly. And to be honest, it’s better that he takes the time to get completely well for the Mayer tour.

  • Madilo

Praying for a quick recovery. :)
