Nigel Lythgoe Would Welcome Nicki Minaj Back to American Idol as Judge

TMZ stopped Nigel Lythgoe, in Malibu recently to ask the American Idol producer if he’d ever have beleaguered Justin Bieber on the show to mentor the Idols. His snarky answer includes a concession that it might help the ratings. But he also insists that he would welcome Nicki Minaj back to Idol as a judge next season.

And oh look. There’s Peter Noone, from the 60’s group, Herman’s Hermits, heading to dinner with Nigel. Perhaps the show is considering the band’s music for a future theme. Wouldn’t that be awesome (SARCASM) My suggestion for Lazaro: “I’m Henery the Eighth, I Am.”

The way Idol’s ratings are going, maybe Nicki isn’t the one whose future on the show Nigel is primarily concerned about. Anyway, I think any decision about Nicki would more likely be up to FOX.

  • icebergslim

She is doing what she is paid to do, making everyone PISSED as she tell it like it TIS…..

  • curly_yenta

Peter Noone & The Herman’s Hermits! Love. Great pop music! …I’m into Something Good! lol

  • Li Wright

I agree. She’s polarizing. Nigel if you read these blogs: Put AI on hiatus for about a year. And then do a reboot. If Nicki is coming back, Randy and Mariah are not! Watch the body language.

  • flog gnaw

I hope Nigel, Ken, and Nicki get shown the door.

  • Rico Suricata

Never for a second have I thought Nigel.& Co. might get rid of Nicki. They just don’t get all up in their feelings like some of “American Idol’s” viewers.

I speculate they have a sign hanging above the conference room’s entrance that reads “Why so serious? “

  • Garrett Clayman

If Nicki doesn’t come back, neither will I. She has been the only exciting part of this really, really drab season

  • curly_yenta

i doubt she is paid to send the audience packing. Fox has underestimated the repulsion their audience has to Nikki, thus causing the ratings to plummet.

  • irockhard

I’d rather see Nigel leave before Nicki TBH.

  • Susan Burge

Peter Noone was a mentor in 2007, but I don’t remember the theme – I think it was British pop or something similar, not limited to Herman’s Hermits songs. Of course, I’m sure the current kids have never heard of him.

  • Incipit

No to Bieber, No Henery the Eighth, no more Minaj, what are all the No’s for? – And can I add NO to TMZ?! Heh.

  • No Thanks

He brought forth Sanjaya’s epic “You Really Got Me” and the legendary “Crying Girl”

  • Jake W.

I hope she comes back. Her and Keith are the two I hope stay. Mariah can flock away along with Randy.

  • Tommyo2000

Uhm… Most 50 year olds barely remember him…

  • Anny_nanny

Can I add NO MORE Nige?

  • Incipit

I’m older than “most 50 year olds”, Tommyo2000, so I remember him very well. Curiously enough, the artists before and after him too. I’ve always liked a variety of music, so I remember it. It’s a curse, I suppose. Bwahahaha!

  • Stooch

Nigel should worry more about coming back (not getting fired) himself, than who he’s gonna bring back.

  • LongKissGoodnight

I doubt that any throw-away comment that Nigel makes while pacing away from paparazzi holds any meaning.
I also doubt that at this point it is in any shape or form his decision whether or not to keep existing judges.
He will probably be asked for his opinion but it seems to me that the deciders on something like this are positioned higher on the corporate ladder.

  • flog gnaw

Preach it. Everyone said “Omggg Nicki’s gunna bring all her fans and so many viewers!!!!1!11″ before the show started. Look now…

  • b_james

    Don’t do it, Nigel!

I’m surprisingly entertained by Nicki on the show…but I care way more about the show’s health, and I really think she’s part of the reason ratings have plummeted SO much this year.

  • curly_yenta

Remember him? Peter Noone was lengendary in the pop world in the mid-60s and plenty of people still remember and love him today. A lot of people, including me,remember him a hell of lot better than the throw artists have come and gone since his heyday.

  • JosieX

Keith too. I noticed his body language at the “not unanimous” for Devin. I agree that the other judges must be even more sick of Nicki than many of us are.

  • Caro3278sweet

I don’t think the drop in ratings can be placed at any one person’s door. I think it’s a mix of the show being 10 years old, the lack of good guy singers making it appear quite rigged, and the chemistry between the judges being sub par. Throw in the usual problems of no current songs and old tired themes and viola! You have a slide in ratings.

  • Liteasy

I guess he wants to sink the ship!

  • Li Wright

Does that mean that Nigel won’t be back? Let’s hope.

  • Laura Corn

Get rid of Nicki and lose all that great chemistry with the judges? That makes as much sense as Idol believing the public do stupid they didn’t figure out the “girl fix” from the gate.

  • Madilo

I don’t like Nicki on the show that’s for sure, she brings a negative vibe that is so uncomfortable to watch, she’s so rude and shows no emotion at all
crossing my fingers that she does not come back again

  • Caro3278sweet

Well, in Nigel’s defense, the show had some real problems in S8 and S9. He certainly put on quite a show in S10. And over the last couple of years, Jimmy has managed to make stars out of the winners, so there is some good stuff going on here.

What I can’t understand is why they aren’t BLARING out the fact that the XFactor and the Voice have not been able to launch a credible artist (I’m talking the US shows). That’s big. They kind of nudge around the edges with this – but man, I’d be doing commercials, bringing back tons more alums, doing everything I could to blast this out into the media.

Idol makes stars. Voice and X don’t. Why watch shows that never do anything for their winners? Why try out for such shows? The best talent is on Idol… that kind of stuff.

  • Stooch

This only matters to a few, most people watch to be entertained, and maybe some this year will have great careers but that hardly matter to the viewing public at large :)

  • EB

I’m sure he is just saying this to stir up commotion and debate. I agree that it cannot be his ultimate decision and thank the lord for that.

  • Li Wright

Hmm….I think Nigel is the weak link here and he may not be back.

  • milwlovesadam

Exactly!!! I was repulsed when I heard she was to be a judge, kinda liked her once the show started, but, now, I’m back in the repulsed category. I simply cannot stand her whiney voice, her lack of talent, and her ego. She may want those guys to be her baby daddy, but, nobody wants her!!! YUCK!! I’m completely turned off by Idol this year. I don’t even think I’ll be watching anymore. DONE

  • Larc

I think Nigel was more or less forced to say he would welcome Nicki’s return in order to keep peace in the family. He still has to work with her for 6 more weeks. I’m guessing that deep down he may be as disgusted with her as I imagine most others on Idol probably are.

  • Marie

Exactly, what was he supposed to say? I can’t wait to get rid of her.

  • jms

I’d welcome Nicki back. When she’s on, she’s on. I appreciate her honesty. She’s far from the perfect judge, but she is entertaining and she’s real a lot of the time. There is a lot she should fix if she wants to come back, however, and frankly I don’t think she will. But, if she does…

For one, she needs to gain some professionalism. I don’t mind her calling out some contestants on their lack of it, but she needs to show some herself, as in, NOT COME LATE TO SHOWS, show less favoritism, judge less with her hormones (I don’t mind her judging the looks of the contestants as long as she’s appropriate about it and she judges the singing as well), not pick stupid fights with contestants, and grow thicker skin (While I didn’t entirely approve of Devin’s comments, I was on his side over Nicki’s). She needs to learn to dish it appropriately and take it appropriately.

Oh, and she needs to not steal the show too much and actually GEL with these judges. I feel like she and Keith could have some weird hidden chemistry, but it’s somewhat subdued and kinda held back by Randy and Mariah somehow, so replace those two.

I feel like Nicki’s the least likely to come back, though. She’ll probably be moving on to “bigger and better” things (for the lack of a better word) once she’s done with this season.

  • breakdown

Of course Nigel is going to say yes to TMZ. I thought Nicki already said that she wasn’t coming back next year.

  • Larc

I don’t look to the judges for my main Idol entertainment. I look to the contestants for that and expect the judges to do everything they can to help them along. Nicki is detracting from that far more than she’s contributing, IMO.

  • blackberryharvest

I don’t think even current songs or themes could save the ratings. Look at The X Factor.

Were the 21st century weeks ratings throughout the show any higher than other themes?

  • springboard2

Whatever Nigel thinks, he cannot say that he doesn’t want her to come back.
Also he may be asked his opinion, but it won’t be his decision. It will be up to Fox and perhaps the higher level Idol execs.

But regardless of Nigel, and as much as Nicki annoys me, I am convinced that Idol PTB is not unhappy to have a scape goat for the bad ratings.

  • jms

No doubt the contestants are the big draw for me, but even then, a group of judges that just isn’t working out can break a season or even make a good season difficult to watch. As much as I LOVED S10, for example, I could not stand watching the judges praising everything except Haley, and she wasn’t even my favorite that season.

  • Sassycatz

Ha! Ha! Ha! Nigel is one day ahead of April Fool’s!

  • Sassycatz

That’s what marketing and promo is all about. Making people care about something that you think is a big plus for you, not sitting back and saying, “oh no, we can’t promote that strength of ours because no one will care.” Ha! If showmen and capitalists waited around for the public to want something before pushing it, they’d be soon be out of business.

  • Kariann Hart

Lulu was also mentor for the girls. It was a terrific theme with Blake Lewis doing, “Time of the Season”. Peter Noone still has a nice voice and terrific personality. Now, we have Jimmy Iovine.

  • pj

I’m trying to decide if I even give a crap. Nigel left himself an out by saying IF it was up to him. Hopefully, Nicky will bail because she obviously doesn’t enjoy the job and it’s painful to watch.

  • pj

I don’t find her entertaining at all. Her sound bites are trite and she’s not professional.

  • albean99

I started out not thinking I’d like Nicki, then enjoyed her in the auditions, and now not so much. She doesn’t make sense half the time and doesn’t seem to want to be there. I think other than Keith, the judges this season have been a fail.
