Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Mar 26-Apr 1

For the fourth week in a row, Kelly clarkson has topped both the Pop and HAC charts. “Stronger” is top 10 in 3 formats and is charting in 4. The song has lost its bullet on both Pop and HAC, so it will eventually give some of those other songs a chance at the top. LOL. For now, rule on, Lady Clarkson.

Another female Idol who dominates the chart also had a milestone this week. Carrie Underwood’s “Good Girl” has been showing how to get things done and is top 10 this week on Country.

Chris Rene keeps chugging along as the first success story from the X-Factor US franchise. His audition song and debut single, “Young Homie”, is now top 40 on Pop. The song is top 50 in two formats.

Daughtry had a successful performance on Idol to introduce their new single and “Outta My Head” is now top 50 on HAC.

One Direction, from the UK X-Factor, has achieved a top 15 with “What Makes You Beautiful”. Some have said that the group is quickly replacing Justin, but he is chomping at their heals this week. His song flew up to 18 on the Pop chart in just one week with a ginormous spincrease of 4012. These new lads will have to step on it if they want to keep him at bay for another week.

Jennifer Hudson’s “Think Like a Man” can’t seem to make up it’s mind. One week it’s up, the next it’s down. Bullets come and go. It’s always a surprise with this song. It has reached top 30 this week.

Reaching top 40 this week is Mandisa over on CAC with her latest single “Good Morning”

Adam Lambert’s “Better Than I Know Myself” returns to the top 20.

Hope to see Kris’ single TVOL get some good adds today. And ditto for a date for single #2 for Adam. Aren’t both their albums being released in May? RCA needs to get moving pronto. I’m tired of seeing Idols flounder with album #2.

Clear Channel has announced the return of the popular iHeartRadio Music

Go “YOUNG HOMIE”! Now it needs big market adds to do the trick. Ughh! What annoys me most is the 20 frigging stations he toured who are yet to spin it even once. GRRRRR!
He’s still on the road this week, not giving up lol! To WINSCONSIN, ILLINOIS and FLORIDA, I believe. There are some NEW YORK stations who have also tweeted about him coming there. And “almighty” TOBY KNAPP also tweeted over the weekend about the song:

    toby knapp ? @tkradio
@MrChrisRene man this song is soo good… Been on repeat for last hour lol while running errands…

I tweeted hin to play the damn song on the radio for everyone else to enjoy and not in his car lol!
So many good and positive tweets on Chris Rene’s feed from non-fans and people who even didn’t like him on the show about the song, so I believe it’s going to be a huge hit for him. Video premieres on MTVHits this week.
The song has some auto adds in waiting so I’m hoping for some good adds today!

It looks like the ACM awards songs pushed many songs down on itunes.

  • Ronnie D

I would really be surprised if BTIKM goes any higher. I think it’s had a good run and at least it made top 20. I still have yet to hear it on the radio though. Hopefully they release a better single that has more of an impact.

Here are the monitored HAC spin totals for Kris and Haley from this reporting period:

    Kris – 122 (+ 27 from last week)
Haley – 71 (IDK how many she had the previous week)

Kris also got 1 random Top 40 spin (from station in Charlotte, NC) while Haley got a random Alt Rock spin (from station in Washington DC).

Kris doesn’t have any adds yet today; but looking at the spin totals, he will be getting an auto add from KIMN in Denver

Haley has one HAC auto add so far today – from KYKY in St. Louis ; looking at the spin totals, she should also get auto adds from WPTE in Norfolk, VA & WXMA in Louisville

Hopefully both Kris & Haley can pick up some manual adds as well

I agree that Jessica has the best shot at challenging the heart throb duo of Colton and Philip, and she doing it the old fashion way by showing her obviously superior vocal ability.  To me, it is almost like she is shaming us into voting for her by making it impossible to deny her great talent.  Sadly, I am still think one of the boys will win. Never underestimate the power of a girl/woman with a crush.

  • Anonymous

I’m not expecting a lot of adds for TVOL this week. But based on yesterday’s and the overnight spins from today spins, next week could be a good one for the song

I am still impressed with Casey J.’s AI.  It seems like that single has been charting for a long time.

  • Anonymous

LoL.  I do think it time to move on, myself.

  • LVD

I am still impressed with Casey J.’s AI.  It seems like that single has been charting for a long time.

Oh it has, Casey fans knows a lot about patience. This is now LDCIAN’s 35th week on the charts. But this often happens on the country charts, they are slow. I just hope the song can make the top 20, there will be a window of opportunity to make the top 20 in two weeks, so we’ll see it also depend on how many people come storming up from behind.
Casey has 2 Cumulus adds this week which nice since they often dont add songs until they have reached the top 20.

And Drive has received 36 spins last week, that should perhaps give the label some clues about future singles.

  • Steelers36

IMO, Haley would have been better off showing her new video than the AI interpretation.  We’ll see how it goes.  I wish her well.

ETA – DOH!! This was supposed to be a reply to PAM’s list.

I love BTIKM heard it twice this morning on my radio, moving from 20 to 17 is a nice little jump.  I am a happy fan.

Yay, Scotty at 13:)  Now, I know that this is usually his stronger day, but he’s been doing very well at itunes since Idol so maybe…he might not get the 20K to scan platinum, but hopefully it will be very close:)))

Lucky you.  I love BTIKM also, but have yet to hear it on the radio.  Frustrating because I have been a faithful requester for weeks at the HAC station I listen to on my daily drive.

    Kelly (1)-MKIA

Are things moving along at a good pace for Haley?  I guess I kind of expected more adds and more spins – or am I asking too much, too soon?  It just doesn’t look like there is an huge response to Free, at least not yet.  I’m a little disappointed with her placement on iTunes too.

I don’t get why Interscope seems to having no trouble with promoting its artists to radio, but RCA struggles so badly in this area.

LVD: Oh it has, Casey fans knows a lot about patience.

The awful new Kenny/Tim song is going to mess things up this week. It’ll get a full week of airplay and I think on hype alone it’ll probably get a t20 debut. Have I mentioned how much I hate this song? Feel Like A Rock Star hits the poseur trifecta:

    (1) country legend/lifestyle namedropping on a song that rawks like Nickelback
    (2) “edgy” lyrics like “busted your ass” to show how gabillionaires Kenny/Tim understand the working man’s pain, y’all! (not)
    (3) wannabe anthem about being carefree that is so autotuned and predictable it has all the spontaneity of a Taylor Swift shocked face.

This song is going to give Country Girl Shake It For Me a run for its money in my book.

Re radio promo, RCA doesnt struggle with it. RCA can do it when they want to do it; they know how to do it. Look at Adams month-long radio promo tour and upcoming spring radio concerts. Kelly and Daughtry both had decent radio promo for their lead singles, phoners,
jingles etc. RCA just sometimes has a tendency to wait too long to start it. They released BTIKM Xmas week but didn’t even have him do any US phone interviews until over a month later. Other than 2 San Fran stops they didn’t have him do any station visits til mid February. I’m sure they have a full complement of radio promo planned for Kris- it just may take a while to start it up ( not saying that makes any sense whatsoever……)

Ha ha oh well, now I am really not looking forward to hear this song at all. The namedropping and “busting you ass” is already more then enough for me to know to keep a wide berth. But this is properly exactly what country radio will latch onto.
Yes, I think this song will debut very high.

But even if it does Casey he could still reach the top 20 now that Montgomery Gentry has started to fall. We’ll see I just hope he makes it.

She had 8 adds last week, including a top 5 station, that’s pretty good.  I doubt that they are pushing the song to any other format besides Hot AC right now, since it’s not really a pop song, and other formats like Triple A aren’t going to be very willing to play something from someone who is just coming off AI.

Looking at the auto adds that she might get today, her song looks like it is doing very well.

ETA: She also has three auto adds today. But, she also needs these stations to start playing the song. The top 5 market Dallas station that added it last week hasn’t played it yet, but they must be doing something with her, and that’s why they added the song so early. Pittsburgh hasn’t played it either, and no station is playing it in double digits yet.

Difference being that Adam has a little more luxury of time b4 his album was going to drop even on the original date. He most certainly has time now since the date was pushed back & it looks like a 2nd single is in the works.  Kris does not have that luxury if the 5/22 cd drop date holds.

ETA. It looks like Kris will have other interviews are scheduled for this week. Kris will be doing the concert at 35, 000 feet with Soutwest Airlines/Live In The Vinyard tomorrow, Lyndsey Parker tweeted about interviewing Zorro’s dad later this week & THR Idol Hangover Friday.

Bieber had a big week with his new single:

THIS JUSTIN: Island Def Jam recording artist Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” has sold a total of 520k downloads this week, landing #2 in first-week singles sales all-time behind Flo Rida’s “Right Round” f/Ke$ha, which scored 636k. The track’s performance surpasses the first week of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” which opened with 447k after only three days of release, and Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow,” with 465k. (4/2p)

I guess the Biebs hasn’t been completely replaced by British boybands just yet.

I’m not willing to make any generalizations about RCA just based on what we are seeing with Kris and Adam, especially since we saw how well they did with Kelly and Daughtry’s first singles, even if some in the bubble may not like those songs.

As mmb mentioned, one of BTIKM’s problems was Adam not doing promo into a few months after the song was released.  We saw the same thing with FYE, and radio stations are going to want those from AI to pay them visits, and not think that they are going to get airplay just because they were reality show contestants.

With Kris, this slow start was predictable.  I’ve been saying for months that 19 needed to put a marketing plan in place long before the single was released, and that Kris should try to do everything that he could to get in the public eye, because he was going to have a hard time getting spins.  An established artist can start doing promo a month  before they release an album, but someone like Kris, who is mostly known from appearing on AI three years ago, really can’t do that, and expect to get a lot of high profile interviews and other appearances at once, or expect their songs to be in a good position in just eight weeks.

Aw… I think you’re being just a tad unkind here. To Nickelback.  IMO, they are perfectly, unconciously, sincere in their insincerity.  They have no idea they’re doing it.  Whereas Kenny and Tim are spreading the bull scat with malice aforethought.

Still, as bad as the song is, I think the greater danger might actually be Tim McGraw’s jeans.  I mean, no matter how big a hit it is, the song will likey be mostly gone from our radios by Christmas, but we could end up watching men without personal trainers walking around in shiny jeans for years.  It’s not like a lot of guys haven’t already aped Kenny’s style.  <– ACM video of this lovely treat.  Don't view on full stomach.

Never mind. I hope those interviews aren’t relegated to just being with people who cover AI.

His manager coerced had his fans gift the single to other people over the weekend.  That doesn’t usually work, or result in a big increase, but the original estimate on Friday was that the single would sell 400,000 copies, so maybe gifting worked this time.

Does anyone here know how “Not Over You” started out?  I know it came out end of May 2011, but I don’t know what kind of start it got off to on itunes or radio.  I’m guessing RCA sees Gavin and Kris along the same lines, so that might be a clue as to their overall plan.  It took 8 or 9 months for NOY to climb the charts, so maybe RCA just isn’t in any hurry.

The thought of having to listen to this for the next 2 months on my radio is more then I can bare.

Then the song is set for a massive drop in sales next week. Bieber will still get his Hot 100 #1 which is the point of all the campaigning. It must nice to be a numbers person following his career at the moment.

  • Anonymous

For some reason, NOY sales numbers were always good.  Meaning that one of the reason why PDs couldn’t ignore the song anymore is because its sales were outpacing its airplay.  I don’t know what put it in that position, maybe being on some big market stations, the video, public performances, but people just connected with the song.  I think that BB charts reported that is the first song by Gavin DeGraw to sell 1 million digital downloads.

  • Anonymous

I don’t think that the drop will be big, because the gifting campaign didn’t start until Saturday, and Bieber’s song was number one all week.  The campaign is Scooter Braun’s normal mode of operation.  It was completely unnecessary, and just his way to have Justin trending for the day.

  • Whiskey

Yah for BTIKM reaching #17 but can this song die now. I’m so ready for #2 single.

ETA: Why is this song still getting adds if single #2 is on its way? Will RCA release a CHR song and continue to let BTIKM ride it out?

  • Anonymous

Lol, the assumption that Adam or RCA thought they would get play without promo is bullshit. Adam Feb/Mar promo.tour was already planned back in December per Toby Knapps screencaps from his convo with “King Joe”. January was primarily European promo including visits to Austria, Germany and the UK.

As far as Kris’s slow start, who knows whether RCA thought it would be this slow. We have no way of knowing. I’m sure they’ve been working the stations prior to the adds date. I certainly expected more than 3 adds in the two weeks following the adds date. I’m sure they’ll come tho.

  • Anonymous

In my absolute novice opinion (LOL), that’s exactly what they should do.  I think BTIKM was a good song to release as a first single because it reminds people about his lovely, powerhouse voice.  It wasn’t picked up by CHR, so why not release one of his uptempo ditties?  It won’t conflict with anything currently going on for him in CHR, and since it takes awhile for anything to climb on HAC, by the time anything new would start to take root there, BTIKM will be gone or on its way out.

  • Anonymous

There are always stragglers adding late.  MKIA is still getting adds, and it’s well into the peak for Kelly’s second single.

  • Anonymous

Six HAC adds for Haley seems like a good start to me.  Such a great singer.

  • mchcat

I listen to the radio at work – I think this song  was played everyhour -they did with the Carrie’s song too – buy the end of the first day I was sick of it.  When do they get Scotty’s WTT – they probably won’t play it anyway

  • Anonymous

Did Daughtry release on two formats this era, HAC and some kind of rock panel?  I sort of remember reading about that, but I could be wrong.  Anyway, I think to have a song being pushed on HAC and a different single on CHR at the same time is a good idea for Adam. This approach goes well with the dark/light, dancy/introspective, HAC/CHR nature of this album. Most albums seem to be more HAC or more CHR, but this one appears to be a mix and its radio play should reflect this. Of course, I also know nothing about this business.

  • Lexie

Late to this party, but I am so glad that I’m not the only one that thinks the Tim/Kenny song is awful.  Is it too much to ask to have some country on my country radio???

  • Cingara

It shouldn’t be forgotten that Adam spent from Jan. 29th forward, almost the entire month of February, doing press, magazine and radio promo plus acoustic performances in the UK and rest of Europe, with call-in interviews to many other countries in other areas of the world he didn’t visit physically. I’m sure RCA had reasons for this. The schedule was just as heavy as the US radio promo tour, maybe even moreso because of the number of magazines involved. BTIKM and its video are doing pretty OK internationally (except for Canada).
