Four milestones this week from the Idols – season 4, season 10, season 11 and Canadian Idol representing – and one from the XF crew.

First up is Season 4 winner, Carrie Underwood. The second single and title track from “Blown Away” has moved into the top 15 on Country with a strong bullet. At this point, top 10 is a battle of attrition.

Meanwhile, season 11 winner Phil is making tracks on his native format which is traditional skeptical of Idols. His coronation single, “Home”, has vaulted into the top 30 in that format. The song is top 15 in HAC, top 30 in two formats and top 40 in 4. Maybe Jimmy does know what he is doing.

Lauren Aliana, runner-up in season 10, moved into the top 40 on Country with “Eighteen Inches”. This is her second or third single from her debut album depending on if you count the coronation single. This song was co-written by Carrie Underwood.

Canadian Idol 3rd place finisher Jacob Hoggard’s band “Hedley” has moved into the top 40 on US radio with “Kiss You Inside and Out” on HAC. Olly Murs, from X-Factor UK, has achived a top 50 in the same format with “Heart Skips a Beat”

I think Phillip probably sold “Home” to plenty of Idol fans who didn’t generally like his Idol performances, vote for him, or buy his iTunes recordings from week to week, so in that way, I don’t think the 278K represents his Idol “fan base” – just Idol watchers who happened to like that song.

I’m not sure how much one song can grow his fan base, but I do think he has opened a lot of minds and increased the number of people (Idol fans and non-Idol fans) who will be willing to give the album a listen when it comes out (especially if he lucks out with another great single).

I bought about 5 or 6 of Phillip’s songs during the show and didn’t like some things that he did, but I love Home. I would not have purchased, say, Phillip’s version of “No Boundaries.”  As it is, I’m looking forward to the album and there’s a good chance I’ll buy it unless Interscope ruins it and doesn’t play to his strengths.

But where else would that audience come from?  Phillip, unlike the 10
winners before him, did virtually 0 promotion after his win.  Aside from
a quick snippet on Access Hollywood, the first time he performed Home
    again just last month.

Sure, the bulk of Home’s first-week sales came from people who watched the finale (there were probably also some people who, once the song got Top 10/#1 iTunes exposure, checked it out and liked it too). But being a fan of the show and liking Home enough to download it ? hardcore Phillip fan who liked everything he did and is definitely going to buy his album. Whereas I think a greater percentage of the people who bought say, This Is My Now or Inside Your Heaven from Carrie, were dedicated fans of theirs. Phillip probably did run away with this season but…looking at the numbers (single and EP sales), was there much competition? Without Home to pad the numbers, the sales from this year’s crop of Idols, including the winner, would be looking dismal.

Phillip definitely has a solid Idol fanbase. He obviously wouldn’t have won if he didn’t. But I think the sales of “Home” in the first few days after it was  released were inflated by Idol viewers who weren’t fans of Phillip’s but who really liked the song, so they bought it.

That’s the case with me, anyway. I was not a fan of P2′s at all. But I loved “Home”, so I bought it. Right now, I have no intention of buying his album, but I will listen to it with an open mind when it is released to see if I might change my mind about purchasing it. I might end up downloading a song or two, I might not buy anything off it at all, or, who knows, I might end up buying the full album.

But as I said in another post, it’s far easier for someone who isn’t a big fan of an artist to plunk down $1.29 (or less) on a single than it is for them to shell out $7.99 (or more) on an album.
