Kris Allen Teams Up With Award Winning Producer for Next Album

In a Facebook chat with fans, Kris Allen revealed details about his 3rd studio album. While Kris has yet to sign with a new label since he parted ways with RCA in late 2012, it hasn’t stopped him from plans to drop his 3rd studio album sometime this year.

Kris will work with one producer this time. The big reveal is he’ll be collaborating with Charlie Peacock, who produced critically acclaimed albums for the Nashville duo, the Civil Wars. Their 2011 debut album, Barton Hollow, reached No. 12 on the Billboard 200 and sold 800,000 copies. The release won 2 Grammy Awards in 2012–for Best Folk Album and Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

The American Idol season 8 winner is recording in Nashville now, and expects to be finished by the end of the month. In his chat, Kris was enthusiastic about what’s ahead. He looks forward to recording great songs–most of which were written in Nashville–with creative production. He calls the set the next step in the growth of his songwriting.

The singer plans to tour this year with basically the same lineup, but with possibly a new face.

Kris has also written a few songs for the independent film, Valley Inn, an Arkansas based production. The theme song was written with actress Mary Steenburgen.

The chat kicked off the #IdolBlitz Idol alum fan chats, scheduled to promote the upcoming season of American Idol. Check out the schedule HERE.

Great news for Kris! Hoping for a great album & the right singles will be released.

  • tierbee

Looking forward to hearing new music :)

  • justmefornow

I’m a little confused. If he hasn’t signed with a new label yet, who’s footing the bill for the producer and the recording of the album. Kris is lucky he’s a good song writer so he probably wrote most of the album himself, but still producing and recording cost money. Any hint of who the label could be?

  • washpd

So excited about this collaboration, and that recording has begun! One of the people he did some writing with also tweeted this today:

    Adam Hambrick @adamhambrick
So my pal @KrisAllen starts tracking his new record this week. You guys are gonna hit the ceiling when you hear some of these songs

Adam was the winner of the first Alchemy Songwriting Competition that Kris is a part of, and now lives in Nashville with a publishing deal with Sony, I believe. He also co-wrote the Miranda Lambert duet on Justin Moore’s album.

  • Eileen99

This news has me really excited to hear the new music. Teaming up with this producer seems like a great fit for Kris, so I’m really looking forward to hearing these new songs.

  • Michelle

Super excited by the producer news! I think this is a great direction he’s taking w/his music. Yay Kris :D

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Well, if there’s no label yet, then either KA is paying for it himself (savings, high credit card limit, whatever) or the producer is working for a percentage of future sales (some do, since about 2010, and it’d be negotiated based on what the producer thinks KA can sell).

If the plan is to work hyper-efficiently in the studio and get this all recorded quickly, and it’s scheduled when the producer had a little down time between big projects, production could possibly get done at bargain rates.

  • justmefornow

Thanks for your info as always :)

  • Sassycatz

or the producer is working for a percentage of future sales (some do, since about 2010, and it’d be negotiated based on what the producer thinks KA can sell).

Which, one assumes, might be based on whether Kris has or can get a deal for distribution?

  • nyc57

Kris has said he always wanted to work with one producer and it sounds like it will be a great fit.I’m really, really excited about this album!

  • jan

Good for Kris. I really liked his last album and can’t wait to hear what comes next.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Which, one assumes, might be based on whether Kris has or can get a deal for distribution

If I were the producer’s financial advisor, I would be looking for one of two things, neither of them a distribution deal, as all that does is get the CD into bricks-and-mortar stores.

Option 1 is a firm commitment that a radio promoter will be hired (as Macklemore and Lewis did) to flog a viable single to radio mercilessly (along with the producer’s own conviction that there’s a good radio single or three in the batch).

Option 2 — and this would be more Peacock’s experience with The Civil Wars — is a very on-the-ball management team with a viable plan as an alternative to radio (combined with the producer’s conviction that the music will get rave critical reviews). The Civil Wars didn’t sell 800,000 albums on radio play; it was all done on reviews, awards, festivals, and TV appearances (I don’t have the order of how it spiraled, though), plus the earlier Gray’s Anatomy song placement.

Those are the two considerations that actually make people want the album enough for it to matter if it’s in stores or not; and if either of those two is in place, then there’s probably also a distribution deal anyway, as those aren’t enormously hard to get when all the evidence is that the music has strong selling potential (the label has so much less skin in the game).

Charlie Peacock is awesome! He’s produced my favourite band, Switchfoot, a bunch. Checkout more about him here, he recently topped the itunes jazz chart too!

  • Pippygirl

I wonder what Bryan Todd has to do with all of this? Wasn’t there a pic of him with Kris not too long ago? I thought he was producing the album?

Anyway I am excited, and I hope he debuts some new songs at the show in NJ I am going to.

  • nyc57

He said twice that there will be new songs. Can’t wait to Feb.

  • b_james

OH MAN. I love Charlie. He visited my school and taught one of my music business classes once. He’s also done a lot of great work in Christian music.

  • dy

I already was excited for the new album, since I’ve really liked the songs he’s written post TYC, but the producer news is awesome! I’m a fan of everyone that this producer has worked with. It’s a great fit for Kris.

  • tomr

Regardless of who he works with, I’ll be bying his future music as he is my favorite of all of the Idol “winners.”

  • Valarie

Brian Mansfield responded to a fan’s question as to whether he had heard that Kris was working with Charlie Peacock with the following tweet:
“No, but Charlie’s place is practically around the corner from me. I’ll ask him about it.”
I hope he gets invited to do an interview from the studio.

  • isb77

So exciting to hear that Kris is in the studio!! Looking forward to seeing him when he comes out to LA.

By the way, his street team, Little Pawns, has posted screencaps of his FB chat yesterday:

  • Miz

I’m certain you’ll get your wish. Kris has said more than once we’ll be hearing some of his new songs on this tour starting in February. I can’t wait.

  • Miz

Didn’t Brian sit in on one of Kris’ recording session for the last album?

  • MissMyEm

So happy and excited for Kris. The chat yesterday was very interesting with a lot of good information. But I need to ask MJ about this:

“While Kris has yet to sign with a new label since he parted ways with RCA in late 2012, ….”

How do you know this, MJ?

  • Miz

I’m thrilled that Kris got Charlie Peacock to produce for him.

I read a very interesting article on his studio and process when he did the Civil Wars album. It’s a perfect fit for Kris.

Fans have a lot to look forward to this year. Album #3, tour, movie soundtrack (possible album for that?), and a Christmas EP or album. Wonder what other surprises Kris has in store.

  • tripp_ncwy

    Kris Allen @KrisAllen
    First day of recording=SUCCESS!

  • CanadianLady

He’s not my very top if I absolutely had to choose favourite, but he’s in a somewhat large next favourites group. :) I have both his CDs and will get more.

  • vtu

Thanks for the link! If he takes a similar approach with Kris in terms of focusing on the beauty of his voice and otherwise taking a minimalist approach to the production, I will be thrilled.

  • Pippygirl

^This times a million! As much as I love many of the songs on KATA and TYC, I felt that Kris’ voice got lost at times in the production. Kris vocal strengths lie in his beautiful tone and the emotion he is capable of conveying. Reading through that article it sounds like Kris has found a producer that can play to those strengths.

  • nncw

Kris sounds great live so I am hoping they can bottle that experience into his next album with his new producer.

  • Kirsten

Can’t wait to hear the new music!

  • nyc57

I think this one will be as close as you can get to a live performance.

  • snappp

Actually not for a recording session. Mansfield sat in on the Kris Allen Band rehearsal they held in Nashville. Link:

But he did do a track-by-track review of the Thank You Camellia album.

  • nyc57

I don’t remember that but he did give TYC a rave review. He basically said he didn’t realize how talented Kris was until this album.

  • Ratna12

Agh, I’m so excited for Kris’ new album, but most of all to hear him sing live again.

  • tripp_ncwy
Kris has also written a few songs for the independent film, Valley Inn, an Arkansas based production. The theme song was written with actress Mary Steenburgen.

Audio snippet: Love In A Small Town written by Kris & Mary Steenburgen

  • elliegrll

That’s pretty much what I expected it to be.

  • Miz

Wonder if that is from the demo. You can hear Mary come in at the end. I’m looking forward to the final product and the other songs he wrote for this.

  • Miz

Thanks, Snapp. I couldn’t remember the exact details, but did remember him sitting in and writing about it.

  • dy

    I love the snippet!

  • mtlfan2

    i find this really exciting!!!

  • MargieIdol

This is amazing news. Very happy that there is a good match with this producer and that Kris is not dawdling in getting this next cd out. Good for him.

  • snappp

A 15-second behind-the-scenes clip of this recording success :) Wish the video was longer so I can hear more!

  • Miz

Any clue who the guy is who is singing in this video? Definitely not Kris.

  • tripp_ncwy

Kris comes in at the end. I think those guys are just singing background vocals.

  • tripp_ncwy

Charlie identified the guy on the video as singer/songwriter Cody Fry from Nashville, TN
