Justin Guarini Talks About His Affair with Kelly Clarkson New One Man Show

Justin Guarini is performing a one man show called “Love Sick” which opened Friday at Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, and he is not holding back.

According to a review from mcall.com, Justin confesses that he and Kelly Clarkson had “a serious thing” that begun on the set of  From Justin to Kelly, the horrible beach musical they did together after Idol. Kelly had won that inaugural season, while Justin came in second place behind her.

The relationship ended when her career took off, and his eventually…well didn’t.

Justin also reveals during patter between numbers that, during the competition, he also romanced the 4th place finisher that season, Tamara Gray.  What a lothario!

And, from the too much information department, Justin shares with the audience that he had a vasectomy after his wife Reina gave birth to their second son. She came to the marriage with a daughter, giving the family 3 children. Alrighty then.

Welp. No harm no foul! Everyone is married with kids–Tamyra to songwriter Sam Watters with a daughter born in 2010 and Kelly, of course, married to Brandon Blackstock and expecting a baby girl later this year.

You can read more about the performances, which the site reviews favorably at mcall.com.  Although the reviewer’s insistence that Justin is a better singer and performer than Kelly gives me a little pause. Heh.

Justin’s father-in-law, Bernie Capodici serves as musical director of an eight piece band the backs Justin as he sings 13 songs about love, peppered with anecdotes from the singer’s life like the ones above. I think we’ve covered the juiciest revelations, however.

Justin is currently in rehearsals to take over the role of Fiyero in Wicked on Broadway, beginning Tuesday February 25.

I wrote a story about the Season 1 cast, using some of the songs they sang on the show as the soundtrack, and this love triangle is an important part. I’m not a pro, but I bet it’s better than “From Justin to Kelly.”

  • JTN

I really can’t stand Justin. He’s so whiny and attention-seeking. He was on a Where Are They Now Special one time talking about how he went through a deep depression because of Idol.

  • yaddabing

    Mmmmmmmm k.

  • Sassycatz

Talk about the most unsexy of triangles in the history of triangles!

  • Lollygaggin

Oh god I can’t imagine what the future Stefano one -man show will reveal.

  • Damien Roberts

This really isn’t THAT juicy. Just saying.

  • heartly

Jelly! Jam! Boy, there were some wars between those believers during the Idol tour and the year following. lol The Idol stuff did bring about the song, You Thought Wrong, that Kelly and Tamyra wrote for Kelly’s first album.

11 years later and there’s finally confirmation to what many suspected way back then. Kelly has never acknowledged anything and had usually dodged the question over the years. Justin had always danced around the subject, but hinted that there was more than a friendship on several occasions only he’s never said it flat out like he did here. Guess since everyone involved is happily married with kids, it doesn’t matter anymore.

John J. Moser. I know he’s come up in the comments around here several times over the years with the reviews he’s written about various idols and the comments he makes about them. He is horrible. I wouldn’t expect him to make any other comment than the one he did here, he completely hates Kelly and has taken many opportunities over the years to take shots at her.

  • valeegirl

Hard to imagine American Idol being a success if Justin had won over Kelly on Season 1!

  • siren1234

Sounds like Justin put on a great show and told some interesting stories. No one knows how Idol would have turned out if Justin had won. I am sure he would have been afforded more opportunities as winner versus runner up. It seems that Justin, Kelly and Tamyra are all at a good place in life.

  • elliegrll

I think that both The Voice and AI have proven that viewers don’t care who wins, but they do care about the perception that everyone has a fair shot.

  • Jer

    you should talk

  • http://www.mjsbigblog.com/ mjsbigblog

Except that it’s not something any of the parties have ever discussed openly before. I wonder why.

  • Karen C

To get attention for himself? I don’t really see a reason to say something now other than that, and it doesn’t leave me with a good feeling of him.

  • suenigma

JJM is absolutely delusional. Every time his name comes up here, I consider it my moral obligation to remind everyone that he thought that Owl City was not only Rock, but the second coming of the Beatles. I get that we all like different things, etc., but his bizarre taste in music defies logic and sanity. I hink his entire music journalism career might be some sort of long-con performance art or something. Lol.

  • suenigma

    This needs to happen.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Yeah, Justin comes across as kind of a jerk in revealing this stuff.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Yeah, a lot of what Moser writes is truly laughable. lol

  • abbysee

I always thought that something transpired between Kelly and Justin. Do I care? No. Should he have kept his big mouth shut, probably. Truthfully, I’ve always liked Justin. Now I’m questioning my judgement. I hate men or women for that matter who divulge their past sex partners. Sort of trashy.

Eta, I am beginning to believe that there has always been hanky panky going on each season. Maybe not always involving the contenders but some horny also ran, lol.

  • Incipit

“from the too much information department”

Whoah. I used to be neutral on this guy – but he is certainly working the TMI. Very tacky, IMO. (ETA: OK, yes, “sort of trashy”)

Listened to that Kelly/Tamyra video and one line stands out – “Sorry you couldn’t be a better man”

Oh, Suenigma, love your PSA – so very true about JJM – the idea that his schtick might be some kind of long con is a new one to me – but – now that you mention it – Heh.

  • Anny_nanny

When a man talks about a relationship with a much more successful woman, it is clear that this was the most memorable event in his life.
    Good luck, Justin!

  • MissMyEm

John Moser is a legend only to himself. He hides behind his computer and gets his cheap thrills off from being nasty. He’s emotionally a very little man.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Whoah. I used to be neutral on this guy – but he is certainly working the TMI. Very tacky, IMO. (ETA: OK, yes, “sort of trashy”)”

I used to be neutral on Justin too. Not any more. Very trashy, IMO.

  • WestiesRule

He doesn’t get no one cares and he needs to crawl back into his hole.

  • september21

ohhhhhhhh so, his big hair in 2002 WAS his big head in disguise? I refuse to click the review but I hope the end was “and then Justin woke up”

  • Miz

I’m confused. McCall.com is sewing patterns. Why and where are they writing about Justin?

  • Miz

Replying to myself. It should be mcall.com (The Morning Call – a local Lehigh Valley paper)

OK, John Moser is a tool and this isn’t the first time he has said that local boy Justin is more talented than Kelly. Yawn.

I don’t see anywhere that Justin said sex was involved. Not that it matters to me that much. Sounds like the guys who claim they dated me in high school when we may have danced together once at the local Y.

  • Paige Cook

Wasn’t it said at some point that the Kelly/Tamyra duet, “You Thought Wrong” on Kelly’s first record was written about Justin??

  • Pat H

Moser has to be one of the worst music critics I have seen! Don’t know how he keeps his job!

  • realdeal

More than likely it’s about him. Kelly and Tamyra are still good friends to this day, yet neither have spoken to Justin in over a decade.

If Justin wanted to spill the beans about his “love” life, maybe he should have explained why he felt the need to APOLOGIZE to Tamyra in his liner notes. Of all the ways to apologize to someone, he chose that one. It appears he pulled some kind of creep move and she stopped speaking to him. Then she and Kelly collaborated on You Thought Wrong. Hmmm.

  • Dakota

Well relationship doesnt mean sex and anyway why do these guys always feel they need to kiss and tell when they’re promoting a project and need to get headlines. I hope he got permission from Kelly and Tamyra to talk about this; otherwise its a scummy thing to do

  • Dakota

Not a justin fan but talking about a serious issue like depression is not being whiny or attention speaking, especially since OWN asked him to talk. All these people struggle when they get super famous one day (and remember how popular S1 of Idol became at that time) and then are a nobody the next day. One moment you’re on the cover of magazines and can get into any club and have money come in and the next moment you can’t pay your mortgage and people now give you the camera to take a photo of them.

  • Dakota

    his affair with JLO? lol

  • Bugme Nomor

When a woman does it, she’s just bitter.

  • heartly

As an offshoot of this, I’d love if someone from the early seasons, more specifically the 1st, were to write a book about the whole experience of the show growing from a little summer program to the phenomenon it became and the whirlwind tour that followed. Of course it’d also have to include the gossip. I don’t know who’d be able to do it properly though. I’m guessing that I wouldn’t get what I’m looking for from the lower end contestants (EJay, AJ, Jim, Ryan). R.J. and Christina might. I don’t think Tamyra would, although her perspective could be interesting. Nikki’s would be a mess and probably interesting at the same time. Justin’s would more than likely hit the gossip side with a healthy dose of hyperbole added in. My personal preference would be one from Kelly, but I’d rather it be a chapter or two from a much bigger book. Some day.

This has me thinking, has any T10/12 contestant actually written anything like this? Off the top of my head, I’m not thinking of anyone. Or at least anyone that people would actually care to read a book from. That’s surprising if true. Is there some sort of clause saying that as long as the show is on the air, no one is allowed to write anything for x-amount of years?

  • Holden17C

For a guy who is about to take over a role in a smash Broadway musical, Justin sounds a bit desperate for attention. If he had the talent, it would speak for itself.

I was definitely on Team Kelly in S1, but I used to think that Justin got a bad shake. Kelly’s album had already been out, but Justin’s album was held back to coincide with the release of the movie. When the movie tanked, it didn’t do his album any favors. In addition, by the time either the movie or the album dropped, Idol’s S2 was in full swing, and Idol fans were engulfed in the epic Ruben-vs.-Clay battle. Justin was old news before he even got out of the gate.

There are no excuses now. Unless Justin has spoken to Kelly & Tamyra about this endeavor and received their blessing to speak about personal matters, he should respect their privacy. In the end, however, he is really only making himself look bad.

  • Holden17C

Would it help if we threw in a dose of Dunkleman?

  • Sassycatz

Ha! To be clear, I’ve always appreciated all three of these performers singing abilities. Their love or sex lives? Haven’t really been into it. ;-)

  • Matthew Kitson

Anything for attention I suppose for Justin. I’d take this with a grain of salt.

  • Miz

Well, I don’t think I’d ask any old boyfriends for permission to mention that we dated once. Justin doesn’t seem to be telling much. Sounds quite casual actually.

  • Porfivor Nixon

Not exactly sure why people are upset over this, it’s not like we didn’t already know it. It has been alluded to over the years. It’s not like he is being specific about anything- ‘she loved oral.’ so who cares, it’s not a big deal, it’s not the end of the world.

  • Incipit

It’s not like I cared enough to pay attention to anyone’s insinuations and allusions about Season One over the years – there is always someone talking trash. If Kelly or Tamyra wanted to discuss the subject they would have. If Jason wants to talk insinuations, then he will. He’s doing it in public, to an audience – so the public can register what they think about that – he opened the door.

And of course, it’s obvious that Justin is no friend of Kelly’s, other than I have never seen them reported to speak – no one who was her friend would be unaware of the latest online BS about Brandon – and a friend would not add to the fodder for gossip mongers just to have patter for a show.

It’s not like I know why Justin would do that – or care – as I said – I was neutral on the guy – until he decided to go no-class. Now, that’s who he is, to me.

  • oshi

Nothing surprising about the AI love connections. Nothing inappropriate said about it by Guarini either. Nothing wrong with the McCall writer liking Guarini more than Clarkson as an entertainer/singer. It’s an opinion.

So, no point getting all bent out of shape. Go Justin, with your talented self!

  • oshi

Curious, did you think Clarkson was “so whiny and attention-seeking” when she talked about being depressed or having an eating disorder, or being hurt by her boyfriend?
Frankly, I’m sick of the double standard applied.

  • roarpen

I didn’t know anything about this before, and don’t feel the need to know about it now. LOL!

  • suenigma

I don’t think that there is anything “wrong” with JJM thinking that JG is a superior singer/entertainer, in fact I’m relieved. If JJM and I shared any music taste or opinion I’d be disturbed, frankly. It’s all good.

  • H.A.

I didn’t think what Justin said was all that bad. They were all young, cute and having fun. I would have been shocked if there weren’t any hanky panky. To his credit at least he waited until they were all grown, married and have families of their own before he spilled the beans. Corey Clark he isn’t.

  • H.A.

I can see Stefano’s tell all being called “It’s hard for a pimp out there”

  • Damien Roberts

Probably because Kelly and Tamyra remain good people, while Justin is letting obscurity take over. Its sad that he would do something cheap like this.

  • http://www.mjsbigblog.com/ mjsbigblog

  • supersonic

There needs to be a tell all book from each season. Especially the seasons when they lived in a house together. You know stuff went down or someone isn’t as nice as they seem.

  • supersonic

    Exactly what I was thinking.

  • Cary Gonzalez

Oh Justin, really? A gentleman doesn’t kiss and tell…if these two women never chose to discuss their “affairs” with you, this is so unbecoming for you. I always thought you had more class.

  • DaisyMagnolia

I don’t have much issue with what Justin is doing. Whatever happened was over a decade ago, and all parties are married with families. As long as he’s not being graphic, it’s fine. Ultimately, Justin is simply presenting his take on the situation–no different from many singers writing songs about breakups and memories.

  • thirdtime

To me it’s not what Justin said, as much as why he’s saying it. I just can’t come up with a good reason for him to suddenly come clean on this except for his own benefit. And that’s what is disgusting to me. Doesn’t he think that if the women haven’t spoken about this all these years that maybe they don’t want to? Or more likely, I guess he doesn’t care.

  • michigan

I am on the fence. Hate guys who kiss and tell, especially the ones who do it with Howard Stern in a “frat boy” yeah I hit it manner.

This is kinda like the big reveal once everyone is married and it doesn’t matter. I am sure once Idol is off the air, we will get more truth about who hooked up.

Its none of our business but it will come out just to give them something to say in another 15 seconds of fame interview.

  • deshae78

Oh wow, I had never heard any of this stuff before. I had no idea. I guess I’m more of a casual Idol fan than I thought lol.
It seems kind of weird that he would bring it up in public right now after all this time—just seems kind of crass to me, what’s his point & why mention it at all? I think it’s more classy to keep that sort of stuff to yourself.

  • Matthew Richards

I doubt he’s saying this to get back in the spotlight. He’s been open in interviews about how he never quite liked the fame, and he sometimes wishes he didn’t do American Idol. But I think it’s pretty hilarious that he blew his shot with Kelly Clarkson.

  • Matthew Richards

Corey Clark wrote a book, but I doubt that one counts. LOL!
