Jennifer Lopez and Ryan Seacrest Join Forces for NBC Detective Drama

Interesting that Jennifer Lopez and Ryan Seacrest are joining forces to produce a TV show for NBC. Jlo will star–which means she likely won’t be returning to American Idol next season.

In one of the highest-profile packages this year, NBC has given a 13-episode straight-to-series order to Shades Of Blue, a drama toplined by Jennifer Lopez, which she will executive produce with her American Idol co-star Ryan Seacrest. Written by Adi Hasak (From Paris with Love), the project will begin working on scripts in June with an eye toward a 2015 production start and will be for the 2015-16 season, not the one that starts in September.

Shades of Blue is a complex police series that centers on Harlee McCord (Lopez), a single mother and detective recruited to work undercover for the FBI’s anti-corruption task force. Part of a close-knit unit known for its conviction record, Harlee has become compromised by her colleagues — all of NBC_logowhom also pitch in to help her raise her daughter — and finds herself faced with the moral dilemma of working against her cop brothers in order to redeem herself.

Jlo will star–which means she likely won’t be returning to American Idol next season.

I think it makes it more likely she will return next season. The show is for the 2015/2016 season (i.e. starts airing in the fall of 2015). Surely she’ll want a high profile gig in the spring of 2015 to help carry over interest into the fall? Television production is usually a few months ahead of airing. She may have a pilot to shoot in the spring (though if it is a straight order, they may not have to do that).

That seems like a pretty long lead time for a series. Pilots for 2014/2015 are announcing their casting right now and gearing up for filming.

With 13 episodes, I wonder if it is one of those shorter series where they focus on a tighter story arc per season (kind of like all those successful cable shows – the networks are starting to play with that concept) or if they are hoping to get a back 9.

It’s nice to see Ryan branching out from his terrible reality shows. The concept seems a little contrived, but who knows?

  • Chessguy99

Ryan has been in bed with NBC for years. Most of Ryan Seacrest Productions show are or have been on networks owned by NBCUniversal. The JLo collaboration probably got the 13 show order, as opposed to a pilot order.

  • Incipit

The plot sounds tortured – I’ll pass on the Deep Dilemma Schtick – but that and JLo seems to have sold the show to the Suits for Ryan – – so good luck to her. She can be around her kids and home instead of trying to tour with them – and still use Idol for an advertising platform – gotta be better. Queen of the Segue?

  • Blirel

Ryan Seacrest is a actor the only thing ive seen him in is american idol and jlo is a great actor i know

  • Blirel

It sounds like a great show

  • newinNM

Interesting, the only acting I recall for Jlo is light fluff comedy movies, The Wedding planner and Maid in Manhattan. Both of which I enjoyed, I like fluff comedy. Has she ever done any serious drama type acting?

  • Darko_5

Yes she has done some series drama. Two movies comes to mind neither of which I know the name of(big help). One was with Robert Redford who plays her father in law with dead son strained relationship theme with JL and her child. It was actually quite good. She was decent in it.

  • newinNM

    Thanks, did not know that.

  • bridgette12

JLo acting abilities rank right up there with her judging and singing abilities, almost minimal. She don’t do anything good except look pretty and why those NBC execs are giving her this opportunity, I don’t know. But considering the fact they hired another Idol as lead in a musical with no obvious acting talent, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

  • Dianne

JLo’s best movie by far was Selena. The movie was excellent and she was perfect for the part.

  • Tess Herself

I find it interesting that a woman who has been successful in the “profession” for 20 years is deemed to have no talent what-so-ever. She gets slammed for her singing, more so for her dancing, doesn’t seem to be given any credit for her acting, and is often considered nothing more than a pretty face and a bubble butt. And yet she is enormously wealthy, very popular, sells well, is recruited for leads in movies and sells tickets, is a very good business woman who hasn’t seemed to be taken in by the unscrupulous hangers on who are famous in Hollywood legend.

I’d like to be as talent-less as she is with half her savvy.

  • bridgette12

I didn’t say she had no talent, I said it was minimal. Minimal talent and physical good looks has been a winning combination to success in Hollywood. She’s good at looking beautiful and glamorous, not so good at acting, singing or judging.

  • stef

I agree, or it could even air in early 2016 if they mean just that it will appear during the overall 2015/2016 season, vs. at the start of it. All of which seems like a million years away in tv time.

Either way, seems to me there is time for her to be on AI next season. Possibly even do both for 2015/2016 depending on the timing of when her drama series would be filmed and whether that would be some sort of unacceptable conflict – presumably not if Ryan can do both.

I’ll play skeptic on how much time her ‘producing’ will actually take hands-on.

  • Guest

I love that movie. I was a big Selena fan from her cross over album and it was shocking how she was murdered.

Anyway, that’s how I was introduced to J.Lo. She was excellent.

  • Larc

I’ve never seen JLo act and try to avoid hearing her sing – or more likely watching her lip-sync – if at all possible. But I have suffered her judging and know she’s the pits at that.

  • Dakota

And people wonder why she’d come back to Idol.. Connections, cash, relevance

  • b_james

Hmm…I think she could do both, unless there’s a network problem. Wasn’t Harry supposed to have a sitcom also?

  • b_james

She starred in Enough, which was an action drama.

  • HMc

The movie with Redford was called ” An unfinished life”. I liked J Lo in “Out of sight” with George Clooney.

  • Dakota

He has a contract with NBCU.. Remember after Comcast bought NBC, it git E! Ryan had appeared on Today. I guess due to Idols schedule, they didn’t use him much during Sochi, although they could have had him do pretaped pieces back in the US about athletes, families, training, back stories. But he was widely criticized for his 2012 work or mocked as a potential Today Host. Isn’t his Idol contract up at end if this season? If so, back up the truck if they want to continue the show. Can’t see them going on without him at this point (although Dunkleman would be cheap o)

  • Miss Blue

While I’m no fan of hers, she’s got the acting chops when she wants to use them. She got rave reviews and was actually quite good in her first serious big film, with George Clooney, called Out of Sight. Before that she did Selena, another excellent job, and since I love sci-fi/monster type movies, I loved Anaconda and her acting was quite good in that as well. She was in a bomb called Angel Eyes that I actually think was one of her best films.

  • Incipit

Come on folks, IMDb – the whole data base at your fingertips:

    Jennifer Lopez

She’s got 30 film credits, two 2015 movies in work and another in post production – lots more at the link.

  • bridgette12

First, the ability to lip sync is a fine art and JLo has perfected that great talent. Her acting abilities rank somewhere between Kat and Carrie, almost non-existent and clearly limited and as for judging, Idol is getting it’s money’s worth in goosies.

  • Miz

I agree. I loved that movie.

  • Miz

Good for them. I’ll tune in and if it’s any good, I’ll watch it at least on demand.

  • bannanafish

Idol requirements are that she be available for six 2-day stints in September, a week in December, and be in Los Angeles on Wednesdays and Thursdays for 13 weeks in the Spring. It’s not hard to schedule for $15+ million.

  • Marko

I always have goosies when JLo sings & acts.

  • alar borja

aahhhh.. true in every sense.. critics are nowhere her wealth nor influence. I remember her ” Selena” days when she was dismissed. Her turning point seems to be the ” Benifer ” days. Comments then was that stars aligned then etc..etc.

For pure entertainment I enjoy, “Jenny from the Block ” music & vids .For up-feel I re-watch DVD ” Wedding Planner” so a serious ” Police” series would make me miss the lighthearted roles. #the world is so harsh & tragic enough — any escape is welcome.

  • alar borja

Angel Eyes was the only ” Serious ” film I liked for JLo. Am a fan of light ones like ” Wedding Planner & Maid in Manhattan” I actually was hoping for more romantic-comedies. She does great in them

  • alar borja

I hope Netflix has these 2 movies. Wasn’t aware.

  • bridgette12

The world could never get that harsh or tragic that I would voluntarily watch a JLo movie. She’s a hack at acting and her razzies reflect her minimal talent.

  • alar borja

    LOL ))

  • jan

I loved Enough – totally improbable – but nevertheless an enjoyable movie – like a book for light summer reading. I loved the improbability of her becoming so buff and fit in a short period of time that she could beat her abusive husband.

  • Matthew Richards

    This is absurd.

  • Chris C

I’m looking forward to it. I’ve liked most of her movies. Like what they say about this show, it’d be the type I’d watch. One of her serious movies I liked is “Enough” where she played an abused wife.

  • breakdown

Overexposed, in more ways than one.

  • Matthew Kitson

I don’t get this at all. Can’t see this lasting

  • maymirabella

LOL, I love it , Grumpy Kitty speaks for me as well.

  • maymirabella

A lot of news shows do not last. I think they are hoping for the success of the Law and Order Franchise but Dick Wolf beat them to it with Chicago PD and Chicago Fire plus Law and Order SVU still going strong.

  • maymirabella

If this show is successful , that would have Ryan covering most of the major networks as ABC hires him for Rockin News Year Eve plus he works for Fox on Idol, He is on entertainment shows on E, and I believe he produces a show for another network Ryan has to the busiest person in show biz and his radio show too, Top 40 and the list goes on.
Does Ryan even sleep or eat and when?

  • isitoveryet

and over appreciated (by the networks).

  • fuzzywuzzy

JLo in a “moral dilemma”? Sorry, not believable for me. lol

  • Cory Patrick

If Jennifer Lopez will be beating ass like she did as ‘Slim’ in Enough, I’d give it a shot. Only one shot though….

  • jcabby

Seeing how Ryan is working for the Today show, and some NBC projects, I see J.Lo having no issue sticking with the networks. However, I don’t know if she’ll bother with Idol again, with her other business endeavors, plus a TV show in which she’ll star. She’s busy.

I remember reading Harry will have a sitcom too. I think it’s on FOX. It’ll be interesting to see how this whole thing turns out.

  • masacredo

If it means, that she wont be coming back to Idol, I am all for it!!

    Buh bye J.

  • iluvai

    Jennifer is a good actress.

  • iluvai

I can relate to that grumpy kitty! lol…

  • iluvai

    She’s a good actress.

  • iluvai

Stop the the gif, lol… Yikes.

  • iluvai

Selena was an amazing movie and Jennifer was magic in that role

  • iluvai

You don’t have to watch a JLo movie. It’s your lucky day!!

  • iluvai

  • iluvai

Wowie.. I’m surprised that people don’t like Jlo. I guess that’s what makes the world go round. I enjoy her acting more than her music.

  • HKfan

I liked both those too….thought she played those type of roles well.

  • ladymctech

I love seeing Grumpy Cat with an opinion on this show. I hope Grumpy becomes a regular at MJs … lots of “no’s” I can think of from time to time, LOL.

  • Dianne

She is a business and doing a damn fine job in marketing her assets, so go JLo.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I looked like this when I read this post. lol
