Past ‘American Idol’ winner Phillip Phillips to perform free concert at New York State Fair – Country music star Carrie Underwood won’t be the only former “American Idol” winner performing at this year’s New York State Fair. The fair announced Tuesday that singer-songwriter Phillip Phillips, who won season 11 of “American Idol,” will perform at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31 at Chevy Court. Angie Miller Hospitalized!

Angie posted a photo from the hospital on Instagram, “I am no longer a proud owner of my appendix… R.I.P.” Get well soon, Angie!

‘You’re Good at What You Do’: Backhanded Compliments and Thinly Veiled Bias on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ – Audition after audition, I’ve watched the judges’ jaws drop while witnessing the grace, athleticism, and creativity of styles in which they themselves are not trained, and then follow their obvious elation with, “But, I’m not sure what else you can do.” To the contrary, a solid ballet performance in a SYTYCD audition tends to be judged solely on its own merit and almost never leads the judges to question the dancer’s ability to dance other forms. This wouldn’t be a problem for a show called So You Think You Can Pirouette. It also wouldn’t be a problem if valuing ballet over breakdancing weren’t inextricably linked to the classes and cultures from which these art forms emerged. – Read more at

Brian ‘Astro’ Bradley talks ‘X Factor,’ Liam Neeson, and aliens in ‘Earth to Echo’ – Easy does it. That, in a nutshell, is the philosophy of life for Brian “Astro” Bradley, the 17-year-old rapper/actor who’s soon to be seen in the sci-fi adventure “Earth to Echo.” “I didn’t prepare for the movie; I just had fun,” Bradley explains. “That’s probably not a good thing. I should take [acting] more seriously if I’m going to continue with it. But I don’t take it too seriously. I like to have fun. And just live and be. “And that’s what I [communicated] when I auditioned for the movie… and I think the director liked that. People who’ve watched ‘Earth to Echo’ have said that the chemistry is very natural… and I think that makes for a great film.” – Read more at

This lengthy Country Music Hall Of Fame interview from July 2013 with Mark Bright features a lot of Carrie talk and a couple of Scotty mentions (Mark Bright produced his debut and his Christmas album). The Carrie talk is from the beginning through about the 6:45 mark, and then again at the 1:14:35ish mark through the 1:34:15ish mark. Mark Bright has stories about how he came to work with Carrie, how Joe Galante had to fight Clive Davis about Carrie doing a country record, his own amusing encounter with Clive Davis, the relationship he’s developed with Carrie, and how he works to find the sound Carrie wants to hear in her records. He also says that while they push the boundaries country-wise, it’s important to them to have super country songs like I Told You So to anchor the album in the country genre.

Scotty’s mentioned more in passing, but towards the end, Mark Bright mentions that he was writing with Tim James and Phil O’Donnell at the time that he was also going to be producing Scotty’s debut. They wrote the song “Give It All We Got Tonight” with the intention of pitching it to Scotty. But at the time Scotty had the same A&R person as George Strait, and felt that song would work for King George. So to King George it went, and (after a major chartjack) it got the #1 at Mediabase in May 2013.

Not a lot of action on the Carrie cowrites registration front, but this is definitely a new cowrite for Carrie’s upcoming album (I don’t know whether she will record it or whether it’ll make the final cut for the album):

“Pawn Shop Diamond” (Steve McEwan / Maren Morris / Carrie Underwood)

Carrie cowrote “What Can I Say” with Steve McEwan (and David Hodges). Steve Mcewan also cowrote Play On’s “Someday When I Stop Loving You” and “This Time” with Hillary Lindsey and Gordie Sampson, plus Carnival Ride’s “Just A Dream” and “Get Out Of This Town” (again with Hillary Lindsey and Gordie Sampson), “I Know You Won’t” (with Wendell Mobley and Neil Thrasher) and “The More Boys I Meet” (with Gordon Kennedy). Maren Morris is a young rising writer who’s pretty buzzed about in publishing circles. As I mentioned in the recent Idols/Voice Gone Country post, Maren Morris also wrote with Danielle recently (and Steve McEwan cowrote Danielle’s “Never Like This” with Caitlyn Smith and Gordie Sampson).

The “Somethin’ Bad” video is over 6.5+ million views this morning after being uploaded last Wednesday. A nice endorsement of Trey Fanjoy’s work, Carrie’s video treatment, and at least the idea of a Miranda and Carrie collab. Still wish the song itself were better, but Miranda and Carrie sell it.

  • Sofa Critic

I agree that the song is not the best. The video has a lot of pizzazz and a satisfying concept. The bad-ass Carrie is always fun.
Hoping the sequencing of this new album is better than Blown Away which was bogged down by too many ballads/mid-tempo numbers in the middle of its track list.

  • gem2477

Hope Angie feels better soon! Can’t be fun.

Kellie Pickler is on The Chew today… no.. Wolfgang Puck isn’t with her…

Archie posted a new vlog talking about going to the Middle East for an Armed Forces Entertainment tour starting next week, among other things.

“Going to Costa Rica this weekend for a project that you’ll hear more about later, and then off to the Middle East and Africa to go see the Airforce Troops and do some singing for them. :)

Pardon the razor burns if you notice them. I had a bad shave this morning and wasn’t able to get the job done properly.”
(His video descriptions always crack me up)

According to another source, “they leave on July 8 and perform for combat troops 18 times on bases throughout Afghanistan, and in Kuwait, Bahrain, Ethiopia and Djbouti.”

Just want Lauren Alaina fans to know that Lauren was in the studio today recording her new album. I know I speak for all Lauren fans when I say I am excited and hope a single and album release date will be announced soon!

  • Lib Donahue

I’m guessing this new album of hers is going to shoot right to the top. She’s been working on it for a good long time and has some truly amazing, talented, well known musicians making music with her. Chomping at the bit to hear it! Thanks for posting this.

  • Bugme Nomor

    Picture Haley tweeted earlier today.

  • CountryGal

Great that Lauren has finished her album. Excited to hear her new single and find out when the album will be released. Always great to hear news of all the Season10 alums. Great for Haley, too!

  • girlygirl

I don’t think she’s finished the album yet. She released a single months ago that was supposed to be the lead single off this album. But it didn’t sell or do anything on country radio, so I wonder if they are going to go a whole different direction with the next single

  • Guest

I was thinking that she finished the album because of what she wrote under the picture above. If you click on the picture, you’ll see it. :)

  • Lib Donahue

I was thinking that she probably has finished the album, or is darned close to it, based on what she said when she tweeted out the picture above. :) If you click on the twitter picture link on the post above, you will see what was said.

  • Roxanne Kramer
