Idol Headlines for 4/23/13 – The Evening Edition

Idol Meter: It’s Candice, Angie and Kree’s race to lose – American Idol’s Amber Holcomb bought herself some time by using the show-closing sweet spot last week to — at last — deliver a memorable performance. Still, despite a subpar week from Kree, Amber’s long-term prospects are dimmer than a dwarf star in the Andromeda Galaxy. It’s Candice, Angie and Kree’s race to lose; let’s see what might cause that to happen (Fox, Wednesday and Thursday, 8 p.m. ET/PT). – Read more at Idol Meter

‘American Idol': Season Three’s All-Girl Final Four on Season 12’s Female Showdown – Just when you think you’ve seen it all on American Idol, the 12-year-old series writes a new chapter. The newest page in the show’s history: the first all-female top five, which last week was narrowed down to four. But that’s not a first. It happened once before, nine years ago. When George Huff was voted off in fifth place on Idol in season three, four females were left standing: Fantasia, Diana DeGarmo, Jasmine Trias and La Toya London. – Read more at The Hollywood Reporter

Tate Stevens Talks New Album, L.A. Reid, and REO Speedwagon-Style Country – If forced to say one single thing about Season 2 “X Factor” winner Tate Stevens, it would have to be that he’s certainly an efficient guy. While his predecessor champion on the reality show, Melanie Amaro, has yet to release a full-length album, Stevens blew through the process of creating a complete release in an extraordinarily short amount of time. – Read more at Yahoo.com

‘Dancing With the Stars’ Week 6: Anna Trebunskaya Blogs on Stevie Wonder Night – Hello, everybody! I’m stepping in for [friend and fellow ‘Dancing With the Stars’ pro] Louis Van Amstel this week, and am excited to share with you my thoughts on last night’s show. I’m a huge fan of Stevie Wonder. I grew up listening and dancing to his music, so I loved the concept of Stevie Wonder night. It turned out that I was also in two out of three pro dances. It was a beautiful experience. I love the opening dance by the pros and the troupe. I think it sets up a tone to the show. Now, let’s get to our contestants! – Read more at ABC.com

‘America’s Got Talent’s’ New Judges Heidi Klum, Mel B. on Being Booed – New “America’s Got Talent” judges Heidi Klum and Mel B. faced the press at NBCU’s Summer Press Day in Pasadena on Monday. How are they doing in the new gig? They seem to be getting along really well with returning judges Howard Stern and Howie Mandel, who says that when Mel B. makes a decision, there’s no dissuading her – even if the audience boos her as reported in the judge’s first days on the job. “Who hasn’t been booed?” Mel B. said of the local crowd’s propensity to boo when someone doesn’t get through the auditions. – Read more at The Wrap

Shirley Halperin is claiming that American Idol tried to launch a plan to replace Mariah Carey with Jennifer Lopez. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/idol-panic-secret-plot-replace-444869

For some reason I have a hard time believing this.

  • Tommyo2000

Jay looks super cute on that cover…

    Uh-oh, this just in:

So either somebody has a red hotline to THR to stir up drama, or THR’s staff had an excellent 420 celebration.

Restarting judge drama just when the actual singing was heating up may be what puts me over the edge for giving up on Idol. I mostly like this Top 4 and want to hear what they release as albums, but we’re coming up on the point at which the Honey Boo Boo idiocy surrounding the show is more than I can bear.

Wow. Honestly, altho JLO was annoying. I like her MUCH better than Mariah. At least Jennifer brought a sense of style to the show, and her critiques (IMO) were better than Mariah. So this does not surprise me. To bad it didn’t happen.

  • Niall

The Mariah-JLo story makes no sense. For all of Mariah’s loopy wordiness, she does give good advice and knows her stuff. JLo was useless. I’m puzzled, mostly by what seems to be Shirley’s gullibility.

  • elliegrll

I can almost believe that Fox wanted to do this, but I would hope that Nigel and company still have an inkling that the focus should be on the contestants.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lauren.dennis.75 Lauren Dennis

On the live shows everything was goosies and beautiful. That’s not a critique

  • Niall

Do we know Latoya would WANT to be her backup singer? And in terms of style, Latoya and Fantasia are actually very different. In reality, all the “three divas” had in common was their skin color. Musically they aren’t triplets by any stretch of the imagination. In reading the interview with the season three top 4, I was mostly struck by Fantasia’s seeming obviousness to the fact that George Huff did, in fact, release a cd. It was on Word Records. She doesn’t seem to know that, which is strange.

  • elliegrll

It is true that Mariah started the season as if she just couldn’t be bothered. She was almost, if not worse, as Steven Tyler was last year.

It would have been a bad move because the tone this season has just been bad. Things started off on a sour note with Mariah’s tweet about Nicki, and then the focus on the so called fight, and the producers made things worse with this year’s casting and the way that they have produced the episodes. This has been a talent cast, even three of the top five guys are as talented as the guys who were cast during seasons 10 and 11, but the producers didn’t do a good job of letting people see that, just as they haven’t positioned the female contestants in a positive light.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

I’m not in show business — but I can believe the producers (Mike Darnell) wanted to renegotiate the salary and maybe that’s when things got heated. But they wouldn’t replace mid-season….they would have to come up with a damn good reason.
However, this means IMO that Mariah is not being “invited” back…and maybe not Nicki.
Nigel always said he wanted Jlo to return.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

Nigel doesn’t have anything to do with hiring the judges. It’s MIke Darnell.

  • elliegrll

There’s no reason why they would renegotiate Mariah’s contract in the middle of the season. It’s not like American Idol is hurting for money right now, or that Mariah’s contract wasn’t paid for during the first two or three episodes of the season.

  • abbysee

There is no renegotiations at this point in the game. I’m sure both Nicki and Mariah will be one and done anyway.

  • elliegrll

It would have been a stunt. My point was that I would hope that the people producing the show wouldn’t be in on the stunt, and would have sense enough to tell the people at Fox that it was a stupid idea that would just wind up hurting the show.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

    Paula – maybe?

  • blackberryharvest

True or not, its still interesting lol. I can actually see a Randy, JLo, and Keith panel working. Some people may call it “boring” but I think Keith’s personality hasn’t been allowed to shine with Nicki on the panel.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lauren.dennis.75 Lauren Dennis

Okay, I would be here for Paula. This season has been a disaster from all parties (contestants, judges, and producers). Nobody is innocent in this mess except for Keith

  • Wfish88

I suppose Mariah gives better critiques than JLO , she just delivers it in the most annoying way. Idk, mabye I liked JLo better because she was ‘easier on the eyes’ and less of a over blown diva.

  • Wfish88

I’m sure being a back up singer for a major label artist is better than what IDOL showed as LaToya’s current career.

  • elliegrll

Keith hasn’t been so innocent. He could stand to be more direct and honest. He does have his good moments, but he wants to be liked, so he isn’t as honest as he could be.

  • elliegrll

I’m not sure how Nicki has been holding Keith back.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lauren.dennis.75 Lauren Dennis

Okay, he’s the least tainted. How’s that?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

Well, I know one thing: Mariah and Nicki were talking to each other last week, which is a start….maybe they got the memo?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

You know, the message boards every season light up with criticism of the judges. if it’s not Randy, it’s Steven, if it’s not Steven, it’s Jlo who’s a bad judge, if not her, then Paula….nobody seems to like any of the judges they put at the table. I say — have a voiceover announcer do the judging.

  • blackberryharvest

Paula is no better than JLo.

  • http://twitter.com/ItsMyT1me Lori

Paula was light years better than JLo. Paula got loopy the last couple of years but JLo never gave a critique.at.all. Well, okay, she did criticize Haley Reinhardt at every turn, but aside from that, no constructive criticism for anyone. And except for season 8, when they pitted Paula against Kara, Paula was always all about the contestants. JLo was always all about JLo. That said, I’d still rather have JLo than this year’s debacle, but I’d rather have Paula back than any other female judge that has graced the show. JMO ;)

  • taylor

Keith is shoved down at the end of the table by Nicki. He probably could have built some chemistry with the other two, or at least Randy. He’s a likable, intelligent, well-spoken guy. It doesn’t play to his strengths to be by only Nicki.

  • taylor

Mariah has been giving good critiques since the first of the season. She is having to learn not to be so wordy. Mariah has always cared about the contestants and has consistently given them encouragement and advice.

Things started out on a sour note when Nicki cursed everyone out, threatened Mariah, shut down the auditions, and went on her twitter rants. Minaj doesn’t mesh with any of the judges and the general viewing audience doesn’t care for her.

Idol is paying both of the women way too much. They should wipe the whole panel, except for possibly Keith. He is a good deal for the money and is eye candy for the women. TPTB might keep him and add in some others, that aren’t 10 million+, and ones where he could build some kind of chemistry.

  • blackberryharvest

JLO gave out a lot of critiques, and it wasn’t just Haley. She had nothing against Haley, I don’t know where people are getting this from. Randy was the one who gave the blunt criticism to Haley, not Jennifer. Paula wasn’t all about the contestants, she used to have that annoying play fight with Simon. Jennifer even gave Phillip critiques. Paula rarely critiqued anyone and would say “you look beautiful tonight.”

  • breakdown

Keep Keith, get rid of the rest and don’t bring back JLo.

    Michael Orland ?@MichaelOrland
    @heretohearyou @adamlambert wow – i LOVED that performance of
#MadWorld. Then again, i’ve never heard Adam NOT sound great.
    #MissingAdam

He tweeted this after watching Adam’s performance of Mad world on Chinese Idol that was tweeted to him by a fan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Lk0aslU5vo&feature=youtu.be

  • elliegrll

They started off on the wrong foot when Mariah tweeted that she didn’t want Nicki to be a judge, and then when she made those feelings clear during the audition episodes. Things didn’t get any better during the audition episodes, when Mariah acted like she didn’t want to be there.

  • bridgette12

    Absolutely beautiful vocals.

  • bridgette12

Silly story, to go from one useless judge to another useless judge. They have wasted millions of dollars on these people and the only one who has profited is the one getting the millions. Your telling me that with all the stars in the music business, that the best they can do is people like Kara, Ellen, J Lo, Steven, Keith, Nicki and Randy. Between the inept ones and boring ones, they have driven this show into oblivion.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

Do you notice how much Steven said he missed Idol…:)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

Hmmm….I thought it started with Nicki talking like she’s from Britain and the funny outfits she wore, which annoyed Mariah? Do you blame Mariah who was supposed to be the only woman? …that wasn’t part of the contract! She’s upstaged by a rapper?
And do you notice, when the audience wants “autographs” Nicki is NEVER asked for an autograph?

  • Larc

This is the best MW I ever heard. But I can hear Adam sing something and think it can’t possibly be sung any better. Then he will sing it better the next time.

  • taylor

Mariah tweeted asking Idol what was going on and suggested Lenny Kravitz. At that point, they still hadn’t completed the panel and it was dragging on and on. Her tweet was general enough, that we don’t know what she was referring to.
Mariah always acted like she wanted to be there for the contestants and they know that. She is the judge they bring up time and again as being the most helpful and encouraging. Until the cameras started recording the goodbyes for live TV, Nicki wasn’t even sticking around to tell the contestants goodbye. Mariah isn’t the one showing up for late for live shows, saying highly innapropriate comments to the contestants and not caring enough to stick around to talk with the eliminated contestants. Nicki is the one acting like she doesn’t want to be there.
