Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Rihanna each take home two trophies

LOS ANGELES – Kanye West had nothing to complain about Sunday, as he picked up his first-ever American Music Awards and delivered a flawless, if subdued, performance of his new single, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Heartless.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

West was a double winner, collecting trophies for favorite male rap/hip-hop artist and favorite rap/hip-hop album for his CD, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Graduation.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

But the eveningà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s big winner was 19-year-old Chris Brown, who won three awards, including artist of the year honors.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I wouldà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve gave it to Coldplay,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Brown said of the nightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s big prize. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m at a loss for words.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Pop Tarts: Jordin Sparks is Proud to be a Virgin But Finds Always Being a Good Girl Difficult

LOS ANGELES à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Jordin Sparks has made no secret of the fact that she’s a virgin and plans to stay that way until her wedding night, a personal pledge that was reinforced backstage at Sunday’s American Music Awards after the songstress was presented with an un-televised award as Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist. The 18-year-old was truly flattered when we gave her credit for her chastity pledge and for setting herself apart from so many other trouble-makers in Tinseltown, saying a humble thank you multiple times.

“The role model tag has definitely been thrust on me and that’s something I don’t take lightly,” Sparks said.

DAVID COOK

David Cook, the smug-grinned rocker who won the most recent season of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ has exactly two settings to his voice: Regular Howl and Anguished Howl. The beauty of his à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ run was in the way he deployed them. When reworking modern pop classics à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Michael Jacksonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Billie Jean,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Lionel Richieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Helloà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d begin with Regular, shift to Anguished for an unexpected line or three midsong, then retreat. In this way Mr. Cook managed to appear meaningful, restrained and at times even clever.

Pitting debut CDs of 2 ‘Idol’ Davids

In May, the big question wasn’t Obama or McCain; nope, the men whose merits we were mulling over were named Davids Archuleta and Cook.

Cook went on to win American Idol by a landslide, but the Archuleta contingent was strong enough to push the teen’s self-titled debut album to a No. 2 bow on the Billboard charts (darn you, Taylor Swift!).

Cook’s eponymous debut followed a week later, so it seems like a good time to see how the two stack up.

Locke doesn’t care what carols her fellow “American Idol” alums croon on their holiday tour, which launches Saturday in Pittsburgh, as long as she gets to sing about that jolly, happy soul with a corncob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coal.

“‘Frosty the Snowman’ is my favorite all-time Christmas song, ever since I was a little girl,” the 30-year-old Locke said. “I remember sitting there watching that cartoon, so fascinated by him and that song. It just stuck in my head.”

Ford Sticks With ‘American Idol’ Sponsorship

“Yes, the partnership between Ford and Idol continues in 2009,” confirmed a Ford spokesperson.

Spokespersons for Fox as well as Idol producer Fremantle also confirmed that the relationship remains intact.

That is welcome news to everyone involved with the show, as Ford last year spent nearly $78 million on its American Idol sponsorship (including commercials), and has spent some $328.5 million over the seven seasons of Idol, according to data from TNS Media Intelligence.

It is interesting how people see different things in the same article, though. Kind of like statsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Yeah, kind of like the “does Cook have the most successful Idol coronation song or not….” debate that went down when the Magic Rainbow went platinum. If even stats aren’t concrete proof of anything and so open to debate, you can fuggetabout definitively deciphering ambiguous reviews.

My interpretation, for the record, of the NYC critic was a begrudging “hey, it’s actually pretty good…if you like that sort of thing. Which, you know, I don’t. But if I did, it’s not bad.”

Super cute interview with Archie at the set of the Aol Live Session

    Another interview from Access Hollywood

Plus Jordin wants to duet with Archie:

AMA winner Jordin Sparks (in Dolce & Gabbana), with fellow pop singer Natasha Bedingfield, has a long list of artists she’d like to collaborate with next. “I’d love to work with Chris Brown again! And David Archuletta, and Pink, Leona Lewis and Steven Tyler from Aerosmith!”

  • soundscene

^^ He sounded so good in that bit from Crush! Love the snazzy suit. Ugh, please let them put that up soon. Maybe tomorrow. lol.

And haha to gushing over Pink and not wanting to look like a dork in front of her.

    I would *love* a Jordin/David duet.

Erm. Looking at that description, this seems much, much more up Archie’s alley. Seeing his name amidst the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus and Corbin Bleu is like the ultimate case of “what doesn’t belong here” LOL

    “David Cook speaks to Blender”

I feel bad that Cookie knows that some of the Archie fans have said some really mean things about him. Cookie does read the boards. It’s not a competition anymore, lol, there is plenty of room in the music biz. I love them both. I am a die hard Archie fan but I respect Cook and he is just so gosh darn talented that it’s hard not to notice. Well Cookie, if you are reading this blog, this Archie fan loves ya too. :) I hope you both sell a million records by X-MAS.

  • FolkFan

I actually got the sense from the Blender interview that some of those nasty things were said to his face. Very sad.

  • elisad

^Yep, I know someone did that, um…know of. That person proudly posted a video of it online. (And is selling some posters he got David signed.)

  • EmmaJK

DC will be performing at the Walt Disney Christmas Parade

Ew. This is most likely one of those “contractually obligated” as winner type things. Or else it’s one of the compromises he had to make in order to have some time off at Christmas.

ETA: Aw, that Blender video makes me want to pet him. These guys are real people. Words hurt.

  • Davidx2

Well said, Sue! I’m a fan of both Davids too. Musically, Archie is more my style but how can you not love Cook. He’s intelligent, humble and has a great sense of humour….and he’s always treated DA with love and respect. It’s a shame how some fans act….I’ve seen it on both sides. Archie fans who hate Cook and Cook fans who love to pick on Archie. I can’t believe that either would condone this and knowing that Cook has heard some of it is sad indeed. :sad_wp: I hope that some of those fansites will do something to stop this from going any further (like deleting hateful comments). I’d hate to see this ruin the Davids’ friendship. :cry_wp:

I pretty much just hang out on DCO, and as the official website, it’s probably no surprise that they delete anything hateful pretty quickly. As most Cook fans seem to view DA as DC’s “other” younger brother, people are pretty aggressive on DCO about flagging anything bad.

I don’t hang out on any of the unofficial websites, but I have some trouble seeing the folks at david-cook.org (or “the dash” as they’re calling themselves these days) putting up with that sort of thing.

  • LK08

Davidx2- You are right that the nasty stuff goes both ways. I wouldn’t worry about it affecting the Davids’ friendship. I know for sure that David Archuleta has been very mature about the “stuff” that happens. He has said many times that it is part of the business. They will be fine.

Trina- I know David A is in the age range of Miley and the Jonas Brothers, but he doesn’t fit any more than Cook does in the Disney crowd. There is a reason he turned down an offer to be in High School Musical 3. Oh well, I expect the Disney thing is part of the AI winner gig. I guess the exposure is good anway. It is too bad it is on Christmas day.

  • wordnerdarchie

Oh well, I expect the Disney thing is part of the AI winner gig. I guess the exposure is good anway. It is too bad it is on Christmas day.

But it’s good that this gig is taped several weeks earilier, so Cook will be having time off during the holidays. He deserves it. LOL.
