NBC’s ‘The Voice’ is making itself heard in season 2 – With NBC’s hit singing competition down to four finalists (performance finale tonight, 8 ET/PT), executive producer Mark Burnett says it’s wide open. “You have no idea who’s going to win. From the blind auditions last year, there were a lot of people thinking that possibly (eventual winner Javier Colon) was going to win it,” he says. “This year, I could see every reason any of them could win.” – Read more at USA Today

100 & Single: Buy An Adam Lambert Album, Strike A Tiny Blow For Gay Rights – One year later, I’d like to invite you to get behind another consumerist message that, in 2012, should be equally uncontroversial: Being openly gay shouldn’t prevent you from having a No. 1 album in the United States. The album we can support to send this message is Adam Lambert’s second major-label disc Trespassing, which arrives in stores on May 15—virtually one year to the day after the successful Bridesmaids opening. – Read more at the Village Voice

Kris Allen Loves Vinyl, ‘Parks & Rec’ And The Civil Wars: Favorites – Kris Allen is one of the most humble, friendly and talented people we’ve ever encountered, making him one of our all-time favorite artists to spend some one-on-one time with. But what about his favorite things? In our latest installment of Favorites, we discovered that the Idol champ has a thing for vinyl, is a huge fan of Parks And Recreation, and absolutely savors the cuisine in both Austin and Portland. When we asked about some more Kris Allen-specific stuff, the “Vision Of Love” singer revealed that his most cherished track on his upcoming sophomore LP (or his “baby” as he calls it) is “Teach Me How Love Goes” — so keep an ear out for that one when Thank You Camellia drops on May 22. – Read more at Idolator

Interview: Ex-’American Idol’ singer Haley Reinhart ready to Lolla – “The kind of audience I’m speaking to is a very wide range of people,” Reinhart said Thursday during the grand opening of the AT&T Retail Innovation Center in Arlington Heights when asked why she was chosen to be the first “Idol” alum to perform at Lollapalooza. “It could be because (my sound is) sultry, rock, R&B — all of these things combined. ‘Dancing With the Stars’: Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy Dish on Season 14 – No one is more surprised about making it to the final six competitors than Gilbert herself. “I am kind of shocked, actually,” the “Little House on the Prairie” actress told “Good Morning America” contributor Melissa Rycroft in an interview that aired on the show today. “I tried not to have too many expectations going in to where we would be, so each week has been a surprise, but then having people vote us through when we’ve gotten lower scores has been really validating and amazing, surprising.” – Read more at Dancing with the Stars

Yay! Colton tweeted he was writing with Lifehouse! Excited to hear what comes from it! I am also hoping for a merger of the Voice’s Lindsey Pavao and Colton for a EMO duet – I think they would make a great angsty song!

Yes Randi, I’ve heard the album, and it’s OMG! It’s so perfect. I had my doubts, but wow, after listening to the whole thing! I love, absolutely love every track (but one) on the album.

And I thought that I’ll only love/like about half and be meh about the rest. Just wow. Adam you made this fan proud.

Loved it too! They made some interesting points about the final four. I agree with their assessment that hyperbole could backfire on Joshua. I also agree that Jessica and Hollie should come out of the stilts. Jessica should have gotten an ovation for You Are So Beautiful. It was exquisite!

Yay! Colton tweeted he was writing with Lifehouse!

Good for him! He seemed to be doing a good job on the show of positioning himself to pick up cowriting sessions with artists he admires, so I’m glad that’s paying off for him.

This also tends to confirm my sinking suspicion that no matter how much I dislike his voice and persona, he’s going to release one song I guiltily buy because the song really works for me. If he’s that smart, I don’t really begrudge him the $1.29.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick kesia monteith

LOL at Jason Averett’s editing on Idology, putting the “final 3″ of Josh and Jessica, with the little soldier girl with the helmet replacing Hollie. *Snicker* That’s what I love about Idology when talking about underdogs. Allison as wondergirl in season 8, Haley as the slayer, now Hollie with the little soldier girl. Hollie is in good company right there ;)

First time I’ve watched it.  Melinda is gold!  Love that girl.

I still think that by creating a frontrunner in Joshua, the judges/producers are intentionally hoping to create an underdog.  Part of the excitement of American Idol is to see a contestant’s “growth.”  I absolutely would not be surprised to see Hollie in the final.  Not at all.  And, I think they paved the way for Joshua’s possible ouster by basically promising to sign him once this is all said and done.

I loved the Village Voice article for the shameless reason that it validates the position I have argued here namely that by purchasing Trespassing one makes a small contribution to the US becoming a more equal society.  I got so much negative response on that stance, I began to wonder if I was way off base.  Nice to see others are thinking this way too.  Of course, I think Trespassing is a fantastic, Grammy worthy album that one should buy for the music’s sake, but helping the cause of gay rights is a nice bonus.

It Wasn’t it was leaked. I love the promo Kris is getting today. The one talking about The important’s of zipping up your pants was so funny. (or how it was actually titled). I laughed so hard when she asked Kris that question.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashetalia-Staatz/100001792695528 Ashetalia Staatz

I’m not going to give you a negative response on that stance. Look, we’re supposedly a developed nation, but we have states passing anti-gay union–civil or marriage–laws all over the place. We came up with “reparative therapy.” We sent our anti-gay folk over to Uganda, with terrible results. Our veep had to be “cleared” of being pro gay marriage just yesterday. We have successful politicians still fighting to reinstate dadt.

So yes, we have a problem with gays, gay marriage, gay sex, and on and on. Denying this is ridiculous.

One should most certainly buy Trespassing for the music. However, it is impressive and very courageous of Adam to simply be “out” from the very beginning.

I am progressive. I am buying the album because of the music. I would be lying if I said that the political implications of buying the album did not affect me at all.

Basically, this is (imo) an excellent album, and, for me, it’s like killing two birds with one stone. Yay.

Idology is more entertaining that actually watching the show honestly.  Michael and Melinda are spot-on but it’s obvious they are going to be be disappointed because there is no way in hell Philip won’t win this season.  He’s given back to back crap performances two weeks running and hasn’t hit the seal yet.  He could fart yankee doodle dandy and he’d still be safe.

GwendolynD: And, I think they paved the way for Joshua’s possible ouster by basically promising to sign him once this is all said and done.

Not necessarily. Last year, by top 5 you could already tell Jimmy was going to sign Scotty even if he wasn’t in the finale or went on to win. Jimmy basically said “he would go on to sign him.” Scotty still won even with Jimmy’s comments so it’s possible Joshua could win, too.

I hope Kris’s album doesn’t get leaked. It hurts sales.

    Albums always leak.

Unless you are Kanye and Jay-Z and have enough power and money to keep the tracks each spread across two secure lap tops and just drop it to iTunes the day you release.

People who are going to buy the album, will buy it anyway. Even if you prevent a leak, those that were going to steal the album will just steal it one week later. It is attitudes that need to change.

Leaked? How does it get leaked?

Lots of ways. Somebody in the warehouse. Somebody who got sent an official pre-release (critics). A friend who got a pre-release copy. Even if they all just send it to two friends who are big fans who will buy the album, eventually somebody gets it who doesn’t mind sharing it more widely. Then, the fan base gets a hold of it and it spreads like wildfire.

  • Anonymous

I will buy Trespassing because of its music quality, not for any other reason. People who don’t buy it should make their decision based on the music, nothing else. People who buy or don’t, for other reasons are possibly bigots IMHO.

Of course, putting that out into the universe probably means my wishful thinking will not happen. Honestly, I would vote for anybody else in the top 7 before I would vote for P^2. I’m a melody lover and what he does to melodies I cannot tolerate.

The problem I have with Phillip eventually winning is IMO his win would be worse than Lee’s win. At least, Lee by the top 5 starting having great performances like “That’s Life.” Right now, Phillip has had a couple of bad performances in a row. IMO he’s coasting on his fanbase. Most winners of Idol by the top 5 could at least say they’ve had some great performances. Phillip needs to start having great performances. I don’t know an Idol winner that’s had many mediocre or bad performances after the top 5. So he better start turning it around.

OK Thanks for letting me know. someone told me it leaked so now I know it didn’t. It’s a pretty great CD, and I love almost every song on it. Adam’s album didn’t leak it is streaming in Malaysia in conjunction with Sony Music Malaysia as promo.

If people are downloading it illegally in jurisdictions where it has not been released, I would call that leaked. Listening to a stream allows the label to gather data and the streams count towards chart placements in the US. Nobody gets anything from illegal downloads except for the thieves (and sometimes they get a bonus virus for their karmic reward).

I can understand that avid fans are eager to hear the music and they will likely buy the album when it comes out, but leaked is leaked. And your CD is going to sound 10 times better than some crummy rip of a stream.

I cant remember much detail regarding how Jimmy spoke of Scotty last year but this year I’ll admit that as much as I love how much Jimmy loves Joshua now, the boldness he showed this week when hinting he was getting signed (the “he deserves greatness and Interscope is going to do everything to make sure he gets it” especially made me cringe a teensy bit). The week before he made a subtle hint at him getting signed but this week he took it to a whole new level and I saw LOTS of comments on Twitter that were along the lines of “well ok, Josh has a deal in the bag so why bother voting”. UGH. I still plan on powervoting because frankly I want to hear more of him as much as possible on the show. I think Scotty’s lead and fanbase were really, really strong anyway so it likely wasnt going to hurt him. I dont think ANY of them this year have a Scotty level fanbase.

  • http://www.etsy.com/shop/AdorablyHooked Gwen

I didn’t even watch Idol last year, I could tell Scotty was going to win by this point in the competition.  This seems to be a whole different Top 4, and I cannot say with certainty which person will win. Who knows?  But, suddenly Hollie has two awesome performances – creating a moment, and she was pretty much buzzing online.  Totally reminds me of Jordin Sparks’ “I Who Have Nothing” performance in Season 6, sort of her coming out moment.

I would love for Joshua to win, but I don’t think he will.  Jimmy promising to sign him didn’t mean that he was guaranteed to win, but it basically said, “He may not win, but we won’t let him get away.”  At least that’s what I took from it.

If a girl ends up in the finale with Phillip, the girl will win.  Honestly, if the guy looked like he sounded last week, he wouldn’t have made it this far.

Here’s the thing about Bridesmaids.  I’m a reasonably successful, 25-34 female who likes entertainment and is entirely on board with Hollywood realizing that there is an audience for female-led comedies.  But I didn’t go the opening weekend because all the initial buzz was that it was “Apatow with chicks in it.”  But since it was a good movie with good word of mouth, I did go a few weeks later and found that, even more than being a good comedy with a female cast that passed the Bechdel test, it was an extremely sharp observation on consumerism and class tensions in the wake of the financial crisis.  I think in 5-10 years it will be considered one of the movies about the Great Recesssion and that, even more than the demographic appeal, is why it will have some staying power.

So when it comes to Trespassing, if it does open well (and in a week with a buzz-heavy Beach House debut and an Aerosmith reissue, it’s possible but not a sure play), I hope that it’s not just because it’s an album by a gay man talking about his experiences, but because it says some resonant things about how we all live our lives in the 21st century and has good word of mouth.

That’s what I would hope for any album that opens well, and certainly for any album with staying power.

I agree that nobody has a Scotty level fanbase this year. Frankly, the only contestants I could see even having even a gold album are Jessica (depends on her material), Skylar (country fans are usually welcoming), & maybe Colton (depends if he does broader Christian themed music like Lifehouse).  As talented as Joshua, Hollie, & Phillip are, I don’t see them selling well.

Even though Joshua’s been in the B3, I think he’s been gaining voters the past few weeks. At this point in the competition, casual voters & voters of eliminated contestants are important. IMO Joshua & Hollie has been gaining voters. I think Jessica & Phillip pretty much have the same voters as before & haven’t been gaining as many as Joshua & Hollie. But who knows?

  • http://twitter.com/MarieAru23 Marie

Actually Trespassing was suppose to have started streaming on May 8/9 as per SonyMusicMalaysia. They had the stream on their site, and it leaked a little earlier. So it’s good that they were able to keep it pretty close to the vest. Leaked only a few days before it went on full streaming.

And I think leaks are only really bad if it’s a bad album. If it’s a good album, that just helps and creates buzz. People that were going to download illegally will do it either now or when it’s officially available. It happens to everyone.

oh my… TRESPASSING is Adam’s best cd yet. It is THAT good. Grammy worthy in my opinion. Underneath gives me goosies, his vocals is otherwordly. I really like Cuckoo esp the second half of the song. and damn it, Runnin is so crazy! Crazy, crazy, crazy. Did I mention it is that crazy good?

  • http://twitter.com/sarahsayssoo Sarah

Would you say I’m a bigot because I don’t buy Chik-fil-a because of their support of homophobic political groups? Or the fact that I don’t shop at Urban Outfitters or any of their related brands because of their support of right-wing politicians.

Where we spend money is political. Boycotting and choosing to support artists and companies whose values reflect my own is one of the few ways my voice can be heard.

I’m buying Adam’s album for a lot of reasons, but one of those is that his values reflects mine. His sexuality affects everything about  both his life and the way he intersects with the rest of the world, denying that is denying the reality of the cultural hegemonic powers that govern our society.

I know Phillip has a huge fanbase. I have liked some of Phillip’s performances this season. I don’t dislike him as much as a lot of people on this blog.

However, I’m not saying his performances have been mediocre just to me. If you see many online comments of all the contestants left, Phillip is the one with the most negative comments about his performances the last few weeks. Even Hollie who many people have disliked, has gained positive comments & fans in the last few weeks.

Maybe all the negative comments about Phillip doesn’t matter. I actually think he will be in the finale. I’m just saying to many people Phillip getting to the finale will probably be undeserved. Is that my opinion? No. Anybody that gets to the finale is deserved IMO whether or not it’s due to a huge fanbase, great performances, personality, etc. It is America’s vote so I don’t hold a grudge on anyone that made it to the finale whether I didn’t like them or not.

The best he’s even been on this show for me is “good for Phillip”, which is probably about a B on my normal scale. I think he lights up the screen with his presence but he can’t sing and makes everything sound the same IMO.

The thought of that guy winning out of the field we started with? Against the amazing consistency and/or showmanship and/or high vocal bar set by *most*  of the other contestants in the top 10? It kind of makes me queasy. I can’t imagine anything more sad. He’s adorable and likeable and I wish hm the best in life but he’s just.not.that.good to me.

The one good thing I will say is that if he’s in the final 2, he’s guaranteed to be standing next to someone I think is pretty great. So that is keeping me watching.

The village voice article is amazing! yay!!!

You know what, I don’t give a damn anymore if someone buys Adam’s album just to support an openly gay artist. I probably would have complained before, but living in a state that tomorrow is about to ban all civil unions I say enough is enough. Every little bit helps, and although my vote seems futile for tomorrow, maybe my wallet can make an impact.

I will buy Trespassing because of its music quality, not for any other reason. People who don’t buy it should make their decision based on the music, nothing else. People who buy or don’t, for other reasons are possibly bigots IMHO.

Not buying because they are gay is bigoted obviously but supporting someone within the gay community isn’t bigoted, it’s proactive to give more of a mainstream voice/profile to one of the only out and mainstream gay artists in pop music at the moment.

I’ve been wondering about this http://www.wstw.com/flower/posterschedule.jpg in Wilmington DE, which would be a much easier drive, but I can not find info on whether it’s electric or acoustic.
It just doesn’t sound like an electric venue to me so have been holding off. I may tweet Blake or Dylan.

  • http://twitter.com/ljrTR LJR

I am completely for gay rights, but I’m not buying an album simply because a singer is gay.  That, to me, is ridiculous.

As a big P2 fan, i hear ya, Tinawina. i really do. After hearing Phillip the first time i remember thinking that he just isn’t right for this show and believe it or not, i was almost hoping he wasn’t chosen. I would have continued to follow him just from watching his audition. Of course i am happy he was, only because i would have missed out on more Philip Phillips.
I agree the other contestants belong at the top more than he does. At the same time, the producers and judges gave Phillip to us and we who love him shouldn’t have to sacrifice him because he doesn’t measure up to the ideal.  He truly is our favorite. If he doesn’t win, i am fine with that but i will continue to vote for him because i am crazy about his style of singing. And i do believe he is extremely talented. But i admit that i am thinking of stopping short of voting him into the finale, (not that my few measly votes could accomplish that singlehandedly), but because, as a fan, i don’t think being first or second in this competition would serve him well.

And again, as a fan, i appreciate the respect you show to P2 fans. It is difficult to read the comments, and yet i understand where fans of the show such as you are coming from.

    We shall see…..

It would only make sense to me if Adam was giving a portion of the sales of the album to support one his causes.

  • HotHotHot

As I see it, buying Adam’s album because he is gay is no worse than buying someone else’s album because he is a nice, clean-cut Christian boy.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Thanks! Well that’s a good point …. is he better off not winning? On one hand, if he wins its because people love him and if that’s the case, he should get a chance to reap the benefits of having a big fanbase that will support his first album, giving him a shot to make a mark in the industry. I don’t think y’all should discount that because that is a huge leg up. The only downside of winning for him IMO, is he might have to fight to get his original compositions on the album and released as singles. If he’s headed where I think he’s headed musically, writing his own songs is imperative.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… if Phillip can write he can have a great career because i think he’s charismatic and sounds great recorded. But only if he can write superior songs to fit that voice!

  • http://twitter.com/weeeeezle weezle

Nah…I call it released in another country and the worldwide web SHARED it…leaked to me is not available anywhere and someone passed it on without permission.  but when you are international and the date of release is prior to U.S, I wouldn’t call that leaked, I call it a treat!!!RCA probably had a clue this would happen.

I think that article has good intentions, but if Adam’s album does open well I’m dreading “it only did well because people bought it to support gay rights, not because it’s amazing” argument. I’m sure Adam wants people to buy it because they respect and love the music, not to support an agenda. I’m sure he doesn’t want people to have ammunition to negate all his hard work by claiming that he only hit #1 because of a grassroots campaign to support gay rights. That would suck. Having said that I do understand where they are coming from. I have not bought certain albums even if the music is good because I think the artist is an asshole and I don’t want to support them. Like Chris Brown, I have not touched one piece of his music no matter if I like it or not since he beat the shit out of Rihanna and still gets treated like king of the damn castle. It’s infuriating and I feel the only way to hurt him is to not buy his stuff. So I guess the reverse could be said of Adam. Buy it because he is a decent guy with amazing talent and who isn’t afraid to be who he really is.

I keep saying every week that this is the best Idology to date blah blah blah (heh) but this week, both Melinda and Slezak was so on point and as it was brought up earlier about the endless stream of standing O’s that Joshua gets, that’s probably the one big thing I could see to possibly stand in his way of taking the whole thing or just missing out on the top 2. If P2 is a lock for the f2, then it could give one of the girls a chance to sneak in there and grab the other spot.  It’s not that Joshua doesn’t deserve the standing O’s from time to time but when you consider some of the performances that Jessica and even a lesser extent Hollie have given that might have deserved one when they didn’t get them, then it sort of irks me and I’m sure it irks some of the viewers as well.

Consumers make purchasing decisions – whether for music, food, cars, tv, whatever – for all sorts of reasons. Nothing wrong with buying something to make a socio-political statement. I’ve refused to buy products I like because the manufacturer engages in practices or supports policies I don’t like; and I’ve bought products because I liked a certain companies practices and policies. I bought an American car post 9/11 ( even tho I wanted a foreign car) to support the American economy. There are certainly those who voted for Obama not only for his policies, but also bc they felt it was high time America had someone other than a white male as president . I’ll buy Adams album because I love the music I’ve heard, but if others want to buy it just to support an out gay artist? Nothing wrong with that at all.

  • Anonymous

I don’t have the type of extra money to spend on an album I’m not going to listen to, just because I want to support gay rights or some other cause. I only buy albums if I like the music and know I’m going to listen to it many times. Otherwise, it’s a waste of money that I could spend on something else that I might have more need for (It’s different if it’s a charity single — I can spend $0.99 or $1.29 on a song I might not necessarily enjoy that much in order to help out a cause or support a specific individual. But not $10+ dollars. That’s too much $ to throw away on something I don’t really want or need).

I am definitely buying Adam’s album. But simply because I like him and I enjoy his music. I don’t think my buying it will have any real effect on gay rights one way or the other. Likewise, I am buying Kris’ album when it comes out because I like him and his music. Full stop.

“if Adam’s album does open well I’m dreading “it only did well because people bought it to support gay rights, not because it’s amazing” argument. ”
But that would be only the Idol bubble’s perception of the matters. In the real world, one article or one tweet can matter only a limited amount. And if someone wants to shoot down his album numbers now matter how good or bad they’ll end up being, they *will* find ammunition, being it a one lonely article suggesting a mass purchase, or strategic Idol promotion, or a idol “bashing” tweet, or KAty Perry’s cape.

Here’s some tweets about Scotty’s next album, what his label boss thinks of him, & that he will be performing at the finale. His label boss was at his last baseball game.

    anne greco ? @annegreco1
@Missy173001 his label boss said next album
will be way, way better than this one. I heard a while back it wont be
    out until fall 2013

    Kay Parrish ? @KayParrish1
    @Missy173001 @annegreco1 label ceo sayn
how impressed he is with scotty n last time he witnessed something like
    this was with brad

Mike Duncan, Chairman and CEO of UMG. He feels blessed to have this

    of college.

    anne greco ? @annegreco1
@Missy173001 great news-scotty just said he is singing please remember me at idol finale

It sounds like the label is really happy with Scotty. So even if WTT or other future singles from this album doesn’t do as well as hoped, the label will be happy & wants to develop & stick by him.

As an Adam fan and a member of the lbgt community, I don’t have a problem with the article, just like I don’t care who you support or why you buy. But acting like there is no homophobia or bias when politicians are using us as scapegoats and striving for new ways to limit my rights, there I have a problem.

  • Anonymous

The only downside of winning for him IMO, is he might have to fight to get his original compositions on the album and released as singles. If he’s headed where I think he’s headed musically, writing his own songs is imperative.

One year of Interscope isn’t really enough data, but it does seem like Durbin and Reinhart, who finished 4th and 3rd, had more time and flexibility to make albums that reflected their particular styles. Not that McCreery and Alaina didn’t release albums that reflected them, but they were in a defined genre that has at least somewhat less AI fatigue and resistance to entrants than the HAC/AAA/rock spectrum where Phillips would also compete. And even then, they didn’t write much at all. P2 is going to want to write.

I know there are as many reasons to vote as there are contestants, but presumably part of it is wanting an album. Given Interscope’s apparent emphasis on getting the top 2 albums out by October while the tour is still a fresh memory for fans, I think the Jive/Bowersox development cycle is going to look like a tea party in comparison.

If I were a fan of his, one more week on my TV screen wouldn’t be worth what it would do to the album development, IMO.

  • Anonymous

Amen! That’s like buying an album simply because a singer is (insert any minority or group)

  • Anonymous

That’s true. Scotty is not Joshua & I’m not saying he is. Scotty would have won even if Jimmy didn’t imply that he would sign him no matter what.

I’m just saying that just because Jimmy said that Joshua will get signed no matter what does not mean there will be a backlash which is what another poster implied. He could still get to the finale & win. Will he? Only time will tell.

LOL. If Adam were in a tourist camel caravan in the Mongolian desert and his shirt blew open, the fandom ninjas would know it and have video within 30 minutes….so if his album was streaming in Malaysia, it’s not surprising that it was caught – they have been searching avidly ever since a few box sets were delivered two days ago to Canadian fans (who, btw, did NOT upload them in spite of pressure).  What I saw last night was fans DMing the link, not openly sharing it, so don’t know how far it went public.

And I feel no guilt whatsoever as I have already purchased my box sex from AO (I know it is box set but geez have you heard the album?). Adam should be very proud of this album, if I may say, it wipes the floor with FYE, lol. I loved FYE but this one is miles above. Adam’s songwriting has seriously impressed me and the vocals are beyond compare. Runnin’ is just incredible, as is Underneath, Shady and all of them really just great in their own way. Just wow! I’m amazed that the Village Voice wrote an article about Adam let alone 5pgs. The article is amazing. I believe Chris Molanphy tweeted Ann Powers a while back that he was doing some data analysis on Adam. I wonder if this article is what he was referring to. The album is top notch. I’m seeing tweets from heavy hitting music peeps that this album will be one of the best this year and RCA is fully behind this project. I don’t know what they were thinking choosing BTIKM but like one said RCA needs to let Adam executive produce all his albums and dump the Claude Kelly and the Dr. Lukes.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/ZBDLZ32F75BVLTPB2GXI5P4DAM artgoodart

I’m not exactly sure how I feel about the village article. We all buy music for any number of reasons. On one hand it’s a shrewd business move and on the other it feels like desperation. Adam will not open with big numbers because he doesn’t have a bonfide hit. It’s a soft week for releases so he has a shot at #1. if he gets a #1 there won’t be an asterisk next to it.

I think people/media/fans in general overblow the whole gay thing. In the end it’s the music that either connects or doesn’t. Adam as an artist generally doesn’t have a major problem with getting his music heard through the various channels. BTIKM is a lukewark song and got a lukewarm response. Nothing more nothing less it has nothing to do with his sexual orientation.

Dude is straight. ETA: Also, Village Voice is not really a gay publication, though it is very gay friendly.

I don’t really disagree with him though, since that is a big part of the reason I want Adam to be a successful pop star. It’s way past time and besides, Adam is pretty damn great. That said if I didn’t think he was good I wouldn’t buy is record just because he was gay. It serves no one to push mediocrity to the top just to make a statement. That would hurt more than it would help IMO.

I think Jessica could pull Gold, with the right songs. I was clicking around YouTube and she has a lot of fans. And not to highlight ethnicity but if she won, that would be a huge boost of pride. Jeremy Rosado was on a live cast going on and on about her songs, her voice, if she wins, she is an Idol Princess.

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

The Village Voice was founded by Norman Mailer. It is THE largest most respected NY gay publication and having them write about Adam is a good thing. For a publication like Village Voice with strong pro-gay stance the whole point is to introduce Adam and support him. Of course one should buy music because of the music but that is not their point. They are for the advancement and support for their community. The bigger picture is having them see Adam do well which leads to opening the doors for major labels to invest big money in other talented gay artists. I can’t tell you how many stories I read from gay artists trying to make it in the business only to be told by big labels that they aren’t marketable. There was one artist trying to tweet Adam his story but I don’t know if Adam ever got to see it but what he wrote was that he has been watching Adam career from day one and he hopes to one day be able to break in the business without selling himself out getting there. If anything people reading the Village Voice will at least check out his music and make up their own mind.

Buying a record because someone is gay has nothing to do with social justice.  Now I’m all for giving everyone a right to be heard, it’s only fair and right. But if I hear something and don’t like it, I’m not going to buy it just because it’s from a member of a minority group.  I’m a feminist but I don’t support female artists just because they’re female.  and I’m as liberal and left-leaning as they come.

So when the first black man was allowed to play baseball in the major leagues with all the white guys….that wasn’t about social justice?

I can see why people think it isn’t but indirectly if an out gay male pop star can hit big in the entertainment industry and on the radio and on the TV …. he’s one more minority that is much more into the mainstream so in a way it is a big deal. If it can open the door for other talented singer to make it into mainstream radio/recording artist.

The Voice is also now the parent company for alternative weekly newspapers in many big cities — it went on a march of acquisition 10-15 years back. Voice-owned papers, like my local New Times, are consistently gay-friendly, but they’re fundamentally about all things hip, alternative, edgy, and cultural (best source of food and music coverage in my region!). By contrast, Phoenix also has a gay-focused newspaper that covers only the gay community.

I bought a Dixie Chicks CD for purely political reasons. I haven’t knowingly bought a Dow Chemical product in years. My father took my brother to Brooklyn Dodgers games because they were the first team to integrate.

There are a lot of reasons why people make purchases or choose not to. You can’t take politics out of consumerism any more than you can take consumerism out of politics.

And while I loved hearing Trespassing, I’m a lot happier buying a copy knowing I share political sympathies (and religious background) with Adam than I would be if he were a right wing evangelical anything.

“I feel the same way, except I would have to like the music in order to buy it (there’s lots of “good” music that I don’t like and won’t buy). I see both sides in this issue, but personally, I’m not going to buy someone’s music if I don’t like it just because I am a supporter of gay rights and advancement.  For me, there’s a real disconnect there.”

Which is exactly why its rare that I buy an Idol’s music, so far only 2. I don’t care how much I liked them on the show, if they don’t produce something I would buy anyway, I don’t. That said, I don’t blame anyone for buying or not buying for this, that or the other reason.

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

Do people remembered when Kelly Clarkson endorsed Ron Paul how all those Ron Paul supporters ran out and brought her CD. Not because of her music but because she supported him. Now it didn’t amount to a whole boatloads of CDs and they may have ending up liking her music after purchasing it but people buy and support artists for many, many reasons. Obviously they felt she shared their “values” and wanted to help a sista out.

“So when the first black man was allowed to play baseball in the major
leagues with all the white guys….that wasn’t about social justice?”

Yes, it was, but at the same time, Robinson was a great player.  It wouldn’t have done the issue of integration of the sports any favors if he wasn’t talented enough to play well from an objective POV.  The arts are different because there’s subjectivity involved with tastes, likes and dislikes, especially with music, so the two situations aren’t equivalent IMO.

  • http://twitter.com/jerryt9789 HaleyIsMyBaby

You mean to tell me that Gay people sing and play music! Wow Man! someone needs to tell Shakespeare

  • fuzzywuzzy

Sure, there are lots of cases where the support of an artist is based on reasons other than the art, but I think that the major step was when Adam was signed as an openly gay artist to a major label and has received top tier promotion and backing from the label for his music. This would be equivalent to “allowing” Robinson to play on a major league team, but after that he had to succeed on his own merits as a player.  I feel the same way about Adam (or any minority).

  • justmefornow

Too bad. That would have been a good choice.

“And while I loved hearing Trespassing, I’m a lot happier buying a copy
knowing I share political sympathies (and religious background) with

I can see that POV, and I’ve boycotted companies/individuals (and their products) when I’ve disagreed with their business practices (eg. Walmart) or social/political views (eg. Domino’s).  However, I don’t subscribe to the reverse and won’t support a company/individual whose product I don’t like, regardless of whether I share their business practices or social/political views.

  • Anonymous

You have a point there. I would probably not buy anything I don’t like or don’t intend to use, because I just can’t afford that. But if I’m on the fence, the reasons mentioned could just convince me.

Enjoyed the story in Village Voice as it is so right on!   To deny one of today’s best voices that number 1 slot due to his sexual orientation is not just sad but criminal.   I am sure that Adam never expected the steep hill he had to climb coming out after Idol.   He of a very liberal family, living in a liberal environment could not have imaged such backlash or hogwash!!!   More’s the pity.    I truly admire Adam for his openness and honesty from the start and he will always get my vote as number 1.

  • sf3456

I hate this.  This is such a cop out.  This is a BS reason to not vote for someone.  Yeah, Jimmy is going around saying that he is going to sign Joshua.  Who believes him?  Who thinks he’s telling the truth.  This could be a whole lot of lip service.  Maybe he’s just saying that to get Joshua’s fans all comfortable, make them stop voting,  and then someone else will slip in past him.  Maybe they’re getting Jimmy to say that to cause a backlash.  People are already mad at Joshua about the standing ovations, as if he controls that.

Yeah, I was like “Shut up!” when Jimmy was going on and on, but that’s not going to make me stop.  If this actually gets so-called fans to stop voting, then they weren’t really fans in the first place.

Yes there is a lot of subjectivity in music but Robinson had to be better than good, he had to be undeniably great to get his chance. I feel that Adam will have to be the same way “better than good” (of course as a fan I think he is) what he needs next are the stats to back him up. POP music is about what’s popular. He will need the sales, charts and tours to prove he’s made it (ie popular) in pop music. Personally as long as he gets to continue to make the music he wants and get paid enough to support himself, I count that as successful. He wants to do the pop music thing so we’ll have to wait and look back 10 or 20 years from now.

There will always be the damed if you do and damed if you don’t. If he never makes the big charts and sales to prove he’s popular then some will point to the Gay and some the music etc etc for why he didn’t hit big. I hope if time does show that he hits big that his music and talent get the credit and not because society adopted him as the big gay experiment.

ETA last thought: I think the difference is when you are the “first one”. Supporting feminist artists today is not the same as supporting the “first feminist who came out loud and proud (what ever she was doing)”. Adam is the first out gay male artist signed to a major label.

  • fuzzywuzzy

That’s fine for you. I have a different POV. I think that each person has their own opinion or “philosophy” on this issue.

  • http://twitter.com/svmreiter Susan Reiter

Just glad to see The Village Voice’s article.  It would be wonderful if Adam could feel some backing from the gay community.  It may be there, but I get the feeling that he hasn’t felt like it was.  Certainly don’t remember any articles asking gays to support his first album!  On a slightly related note, wow – love the album!!

  • Anonymous

It really is all about the songs.  I heard one  of the songs off of that other Adam album on iheart radio app and it was terrible.  I couldn’t listen to it for 30 secs even if it was Adam singing it.  If the songs aren’t good, it doesn’t matter if the vocalist is good.  I think that is why even a mediocre vocalist can hit number 1 with a great song.

And as for the Village voice article, I see gay people marching a lot but they don’t levy their economic power much.  And they don’t seem to like Adam much for the most part.  I will be surprised if they could come together in a unified way to support his album as a community as any sort of statement. So in a way, its really good that someone wrote that article.  Other minority groups have used their buying power in the past to advance their community and cause.
But I am torn as a non-gay fan.  I don’t want Adam to be constantly known as the gay artist; I want his music to take him past that like a lot of people like hip hop and r&b without worrying about the race of the artist.  But I suppose all forerunners have  responsibility to the ones coming behind.  Just as much as the community has a responsibility toward those who are brave enough to be first.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Of course, but it’s always been this way for minorities. They have always had to be better in order to be equal.  Just a fact of life.

“I hope if time does show that he hits big that his music and talent get the credit and not because society adopted him as the big gay experiment. ”

Which is why appeals to the gay community to support Adam because he’s gay will only taint whatever success that he does achieve IMO.

  • Chris

Good point except that in Kelly’s case, they inflated the Ron Paul influence. People by CDs for lots of reasons… sometimes as silly as an impulse purchase at check out or earlier cool cover, or as you said to “help a sista out.” Watching Idol for years, I have purchased just to help a newbie, may like the CD, may put it on a shelf. I do lean toward helping the young kids but its my mommy gene.

  • Nele621

“I hope if time does show that he hits big that his music and talent get the credit and not because society adopted him as the big gay experiment. ”

I don’t think that will happen in Lambert’s lifetime. There is a certain demographic that will never, ever accept him, and that is a huge demo. I’ve lived in different areas of the south (bible belt) for many years, and I know first hand.

ETA: I’m not saying everyone from the bible belt are like that, but many are.

  • fuzzywuzzy

In the comments I’ve read from Adam himself, it seems to me that he wants to succeed based on his music and talent, since I’ve seen him write that if people don’t like it, they don’t need to buy it. Based on that, I think that Adam would prefer to succeed based on his appeal as a musician, singer and performer, not because of the support of those who share his sexuality.

ITunes has the singles for tonight already up for The Voice. You can see what they are all singing and hear snippets

  • Anonymous

Yes I agree, he’s always said he wants to be the singer who just so happens to be gay; not the “gay singer”. I have started to see more articles on him that don’t start with “gay” or AI.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/ZBDLZ32F75BVLTPB2GXI5P4DAM artgoodart

The only problem with that is that his PR doesn’t fully synergize with that. A lot of his promo is about him being gay positive and negative.

  • Anonymous

Maybe in a weird way it’s a good thing the gay community hasn’t given him major support. Many would interpret that as the Gay community shoving him in the face those against the gay community, you know that whole gay agenda to corrupt the innocent. That would stir up a lot of backlash.

Ok enough said. What will be will be. I’m still loving this album and I hope based on the many positive responses from music press etc that it will do very well and do a great job of growing his reputation.

His promo or what the press writes? cause there is a difference.

He really can’t win. He gets criticized for not supporting the gay cause and needing to be the gay poster boy and he gets criticized for talking about being gay and being gay. Fact is he’s gay. but he does continue to say if you don’t like his music then go buy something else.

If you had read the many hundreds of articles about Adam in the last 3 years, and had seen the amount of hate he gets thrown at him, you would see that ‘the gay thing’ is not overblown. Its definitely hurt him in sales, and I think in airplay considering a few comments I have seen to fans from actual dj’s.

PR or promotion is done by the label and Adam’s management so is highly positive and not negative, but perhaps you are referring to mentions in the press, which have been mixed.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/ZBDLZ32F75BVLTPB2GXI5P4DAM artgoodart

I think it’s both. Kissing at AMAs, Articles about him going to Finland with his boyfiend getting drunk and punching a model, and in interviews it gives people something to talk about ect ect.

And you are right to a degree, he probably can’t win but in the end it doesn’t matter no artist is universally loved and if he does not become a major artist it’s not because of his sexual orientation.

My take exactly – “Runnin” is terrific.  Keep listening to that buildup from low register to note at the end – mindboggling.

I am completely for gay rights, but I’m not buying an album simply because a singer is gay.  That, to me, is ridiculous.

Unless you are a member of the LGBT community I don’t think the article was necessarily aimed at you.  I think it was a call to action within the gay community to support their own and try to make history by having the first openly gay artist on a major label get the first #1 album on the BB200 by such an artist.

It’s not about “gay rights” per se.  it’s about sending a message to the music industry and perhaps society as a whole that gay artists are just as valuable and viable as their straight counterparts.

There are plenty of messages saying that being gay is wrong and looked down upon supporting a gay artist with your wallet is the most tangible evidence that sexuality doesn’t matter.  If you like the music buy the album.  if you don’t like the music but know someone who does but can’t afford it maybe buy it for them?  buy it for your local library and donate it to their music section so that others can enjoy it.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WIHKL34XDORTS2UZP4SWUUTG3U randi

It would only make sense to me if Adam was giving a portion of the sales of the album to support one his causes.

Except it’s not Adam who wrote the article or even made the statement.  it’s an independent journalist who follows social trends and was making a commentary who the social relevance of possibly having an openly gay mainstream artist hit the pole position on the BB200 when it’s never happened in the past.

It’s not about charity it’s about effecting social change and/or social perceptions.

Well it’s a good news/bad news thing. “Adam the Celebrity Persona” is interesting enough that the tabloids love to write about him. He gets a lot of of hits online and sells magazines. It’s good because pop stars need to be visible but he also gets a lot of trash and lies written about him. He punched a model just as much as he punched a pap photographer….as in not at all. Most of the truly sensational stuff written about him are lies or an extremely embellished story because that crap sells. As Adam has said it comes with the territory and since he’s human sometimes he makes mistakes. IMHO you can’t call trashy tabloid lies “promo”. How many headlines have we seen about Brad Pitt cheating and breaking up with Jolie?

I think art, like paintings or sculpture are subjective.  Music isn’t really subjective per se.  Now you can not like a particular genre such as death metal which really has less to do with vocals and more to do with atmosphere but when it comes to singing, vocal talent, range, techinque, etc. it isn’t subjective.  There are experts who have said Adam is one of the best male vocalists of his generation.

Also if we are basing the judgement on current pop music and what is popular and selling right now, after listening to Trespassing Adam has created what to my estimation is one of the best pop albums in the past decade so like Robinson, the advancement and inclusion of the BEST gay artist only serves to help in the advancement and inclusion of other gay artists.

omg……just been listening to the album, at least most of it, love all of it… On first listen really love runnin, Underneath is just gut wrenching, Naked Love is great. Liberate is an awesome song.  I don’t know why they didn’t include it on the album and only have it as a bonus track on itunes.  3 of his best songs were all bonus tracks, and you can’t even buy Crawling Home – I’ve wanted to get that song for months now and it was only a pre-order bonus and now you can’t buy it at all – I missed out.

I love Underneath and Runnin’. Several other songs I like, but those 2 are killer

  • Anonymous

Such great experience James is getting on this tour and from all accounts Buckcherry and their fans are very welcoming.  Liberate goes over well live and I think you will see more of that type of song on his next album.   He’s also done a good job with his band on adapting his recorded music to live performances (giving them more edge).

  • TheOther

It is difficult to read the comments, and yet i understand where fans of the show such as you are coming from

Phillip has a lot more people that like him than those who don’t. He’s not going to please everyone – nor should he even try. And he has qualities that I don’t see in the others.

If TPTB truly did not want another WGWG, they would never have highlighted Phillip’s audition, which has turned out to be very popular. They also know who makes up most of their viewers. They also know someone like Phillip will probably be a big money maker for the summer tour.

If he wins, life will not come to screeching halt where there will be endless backlash and boycott. He will still have people jockeying to interview him, wanting to write, produce and collaborate with him. There will just as many people who will want to audition for next year. AI is still the most popular singing competition on TV.

Real life is not the AI bubble.

Sure, technique in all of the arts isn’t subjective, but taste in all of the arts is subjective. A singer can hit all of the marks technically, but not reach an audience for their music no matter what critics say. Even if Adam is considered technically great, music relies on much more than just those technical abilities. Lots of great singers may not be technically great, and vice versa.

I don’t like the comparison of Jackie Robinson with Adam Lambert, nor any gay artist in the music industry. Jackie was not allowed to play in the major league at all–that is the barrier he broke. The same can not be said for anyone who is gay in the music industry. The argument about gay rights in the political sphere is perfectly valid but certainly not in the music industry b/c many gay artists have already been successful. The whole point of the article is that there has not been an openly gay artist who reached #1 in the Billboard charts, not that none have been successful.

The author himself states:”With the exception of Elton John, few indisputably suffered a direct career impact from their gay status—either at moments of speculation or revelation.” But, even with Elton, in the same article still recognizes that “Candle in the Wind” is still the best-selling single of all time (which, btw, became such a megahit after the 1997 remake to Princess Di, when he was already out for almost a decade, than the orginal in 1973).

I don’t see how purchasing Adam’s album is going to evoke socio-political change when gay artists have been successful in the music industry for decades.

It’s nice to live in a fantasy world where sexual orientation is not an issue and those not heterosexual have the same rights and respect as those that are. Unfortunately, I don’t live in that world and people are able to vote on whether or not I do.

As far as Adam goes, I’ve heard DJs/PDs saying “ewwwww you know he’s singing to a guy”, “I like his singing, but his lifestyle no” and one even told a little girl “you know he’s a girl right” when she called to request.

As far as the VV article, its convenient to mention the authors comment re: being gay not hurting them but completely neglect the fundamental premise of the article that those artists, including Elton John, were NOT out when they were starting out and in most of those cases, denied their sexual orientation.

  • justmefornow

I love Crawling Home too! Another great song James wrote with DJ Ashba.
You can tell he was really homesick while on the AI Tour, when he wrote it.

The argument about gay rights in the political sphere is perfectly valid but certainly not in the music industry b/c many gay artists have already been successful.

Except those that are successful, came out after their success, like Elton John and Ricky Martin. Clay Aiken even denied it, and went on to selling millions while in the closet. Since he came out, he hasn’t sold many albums, but I don’t think that had anything to do with his low sales and poor concert attendance.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Clay’s popularity had declined substantially before he came out in September, 2008. CD sales as of January, 2012:

Measure of a Man, 2003 (2.785 million total)
Merry Christmas With Love, 2004 (1.378 million)
    A Thousand Different Ways, 2006 (531,000)
On My Way Here, May 2008 (165,000)
    Tried & True, June 2010 (68,000)

I think that his falling popularity has much more to do with his music than being gay.

Phillip has a lot more people that like him than those who don’t.

I don’t think this is true at all. From what I have seen online, and from people in real life the vast majority think Phillip is not talented enough to be in the top 4. Phillip may have lets say 30% of the audience that loves him, and that 30% may vote 4 times harder than everyone else so he might win, but I think in the end the 70% of other viewers would be unhappy with Phillip and his terribly untalented self winning.

Adam is the first Out Gay Male signed to a major music label. I don’t think it’s as much about musical success (which can be defined many ways) as it is about a young, sexy, Out Gay male trying to go mainstream POP. Building a Mainstream POP career from the beginning as an out of the closet gay man. By the time Elton John was fully out he was also older and not sexually threatening. Adam isn’t just gay he “shows” his gay (kissing men etc). Adam has said himself it’s not ok to show gay.

Yes the entertainment industry has had many gay artists for years and years. Even so Adam has talked about being taken aside and told to “tone it down” (referring to his eye liner and nail polish) while rehearsing for Ten Commandments it was making the producers? investors? nervous.

ETA so even though the theater has plenty of queens; don’t go showing your gay with personal makeup and nail polish (on stage makeup being ok).

I am speaking strictly about the music industry as a whole…not in any other sphere and certainly not on an individual basis where prejudice attitudes exists and would be a huge challenge to eradicate entirely.

I think we are reading different articles…the author entire premise is that all the artists mentioned were close to the BB#1 spot but never cracked it and that he was hoping Adam finally could. (He said Boy George came the closest at #2 but only b/c it was released the same time as Thriller)

Maybe I should make my point more clear–I don’t believe any socio-political change will occur if Adam’s album makes it to #1 in the BB chart instead of somewhere else in the top 10.

I didn’t really like FYE when it first came out, but after seeing him perform the songs live I realized there are some great songs there.  However, the production (on the FYE versions of a lot of the songs) was terrible and cheesy, thus killing songs that could have been great (see Soaked Glam Nation vs. Soaked FYE).

But, the production on this album is excellent.  I don’t know if it was because my expectations were low, but I was blown away after hearing Trespassing in it’s entirety today.  Underneath is gut-wrenching.  My only quibble is that Runnin is a bonus song.  And my least favorite song is BTIKM.

Anyway, I’m pleasantly surprised too realize how great this album really is.

No there will not be any earth shattering instant socio-political changes happening over night. But a single drop of water dripping repeatedly onto a stone, over time, will carve a hole in the stone.

Adam charting anywhere in the top 10 of the BB chart would be awesome but #1 is always better. Bragging rights and all that. Each award, each milestone, will continue to build him some undeniable statistics regarding his talent and popularity in POP music. Baby steps…paving the way for others.

You know…I wonder how much this has to do with trying to sell a sex-image and how this trickles down to making money moreso than attitudes on sexual orientation. In the case of George Michael and Ricky Martin, I wouldn’t be surprised if the label and TPTB wanted their orientation suppressed b/c of the fear of alienating the female consumer market.

Statistically, there are more heterosexuals than homosexuals so obviously is a bigger market to sell to heterosexuals of the opposite sex than the other scenerios. In turn, I wonder if these marketing gurus are afraid that an openly gay guy will attract fewer consumers.

However, in Adams case, clearly it doesn’t matter in the least. He seems to be attracting EVERYONE. lol

Why haven’t other out gay male singers ever been signed to a major record label? If there are truly so many excellent gay artists out there (I’m sure there are) why haven’t they gotten signed? They only seem to get signed if they are in the closet, then prove they have a audience first, then come out.

perhaps it is a mistaken marketing premise: that only gays will buy from a gay artist? but clearly the gay males did not jump all over Adam in the beginning or it certainly seems that way from many early comments. Or marketers are just so afraid of stirring up the wrath of the loud anti-gay contingent. But they’ve known that gay men have been buying hetro female divas music  for years. It’s ok to sell to the gay men but not market a gay man to the masses?  I’m just speculating here. IDEK.

I just wanted to point out that, actually, Will Young was the first.  He came out a month after the show, which is very similar to Adam coming out to Rolling Stone soon after Idol.  Although, apparently he had a hard time singing with the correct pronouns.  LOL

OK I failed to qualify my statement with “in the US”. Will Young was in the UK. Was he signed to a major music label? LOL I”m not even sure how you know which one is a major label but that’s what I’ve seen written. UK and Europe are in general more accepting of gays than the US.

In some of Adam’s radio promo he was asked by a fan about doing a video with a male love interest and Adam said it wouldn’t fly today. He wants to push the envelop but he also wants a career.

Was somewhat familiar with Young through Leave Right Now and a few other songs.  Just looked him up and his labels are 19/RCA/Jive.  Seems like a really nice guy with his charities.  (Like Adam – even though in the UK – his videos until recently were the ambiguous type.)

We’re talking about the US though, not the UK.

P2 performances are my bathroom breaks.  He does e nothing for me except build resentment that he is still on the show while other talented performers were sent home.  He will make a good indie coffee house artist, but he truly based upon talent levels and commercial viability, should be no where near the finale.

okay, I guess I missed that particular caveat about the conversation being only about US gays.   Reading over five pages of comments can do that to you.  Though I know I read some people putting Boy George and Elton John out there.  Also not US artists.  I love Elton John by the way.  I can’t remember not knowing he was gay, whether he had come out our not.  Most everyone I knew were just like, yeah, he’s gay, have you heard the new song?  Honestly, when it comes to the arts, I think that people in the gay and lesbian community are starting to make strides.  I haven’t met anyone in the last 15 years who wouldn’t be willing to stand up for what they believe about civil rights, but  I’m not sure buying one particular album, no actually I’m pretty sure that buy the album for political reasons will not make a tiny blip in this situation.  If part of the proceeds were going to a gay and lesbian cause, then that might make a difference, but even then only if I liked the music to start withwould I buy.  I wouldn’t buy Andea Boccelli either, a fine singer, just not my type of music, just to support the fact that he’s handicapped.  My sister, on the other hand, loves him and buys his new CDs as soon as they come out.  She’s throws him some handicap support  Not gonna buy it just for a cause; gonna buy for the music.  Period.

Oh see I thought you were attempting to refute marmon07′s mention of Adam as the first out gay male artist signed to a major record label at the beginning of their career. She simply forgot to specify that the context of that is within the US.

It’s true that the Village Voice author brought up several major UK artists in their article, but that was also in the context of how they charted on Billboard in the US. Not saying that anyone has to limit the conversation to “US gays” at all, but that an out gay artist topping the Billboard 200 chart in the US is the subject of the article being discussed.
