John Lydon slams ‘poisonous’ Simon Cowell – In an interview with music paper NME, he said: “We had a ridiculous situation with American Idol when they wanted to use Pretty Vacant for this contestant because he was the ‘rock singer’ – the long hair and the scraggly beard and the leather jacket. “No, you cannot use it. Stop it. I don’t need someone imitating in that way. You’ve got the genuine article. What on earth do you want a fake phoney version like that for? Is that how it’s always going to be, according to Cowell’s universe?” – Read more at Telegraph.co.uk

‘Idol’ Alum Thia Megia Supports Jessica Sanchez, Visits PH Anew – MANILA, Philippines – “American Idol” Season 10 finalist Thia Megia raves over visiting the country for the second time as she performs before her Pinoy fans anew. The Filipino-American singer is back home in the Philippines for a concert as part of her Asian tour. Prior to her mall show held at Glorietta, April 22, the 17-year-old Megia performed on TV show “ASAP 2012.” She sang “Smile,” a duet with Zsa Zsa Padilla. Despite her brief stay in the country, Megia didn’t fail to express her support to this “American Idol” Season 11 front runner Jessica Sanchez. Megia is known to be a friend of the 16-year-old Filipino-Mexican singer from San Diego, California. Read more at the Manilla Bulletin

Hockey wife Carrie Underwood on playoffs – Country music superstar and proud hockey wife Carrie Underwood might very well be the busiest woman in music. Her new album, “Blown Away,” is out May 1. And when she’s not promoting the first single off that record, “Good Girl,” Underwood is cheering on her husband, Nashville Predators center Mike Fisher, in the NHL playoffs. Somehow she found time in that busy schedule to “fill in the blanks” with Playbook Sounds: Read more at ESPN.go.com

Talking to Carrie Underwood About Makeup, Mom and Her Favorite Products – You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t like Carrie Underwood. Ever since she first took to the “American Idol” stage and won the hearts of Americans (and even Simon), she’s always been the “nice” one whom people clamor to meet. Imagine our excitement, then, we got the chance to spend a few minutes with the country sweetheart and hear what — besides music — is going on in her life these days. – LimeLife

RUBEN STUDDARD: “DIET OR DIE!” – “American Idol” champ RUBEN STUDDARD is pigging out to cope with divorce and money woes – and pals fear he’ll eat himself to death! The 33-year-old R&B singer has bulked up to nearly 400 pounds since filing for divorce from his wife of three years last November. And now experts warn that if he doesn’t lose weight, he’ll be lucky to see his 40th birthday. “It’s diet or DIE for Ruben,” an insider told The ENQUIRER. – Read more at the National Enquirer

Former ‘Idol’ bringing ‘Kellie country’ home – CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Kellie Pickler grew up in North Carolina, so she knows a little something about allergies and pollen-coated cars. Now, of course, the country singer who shot to stardom on “American Idol” in 2006 lives in Nashville, and knows a lot about the yellow stuff.
“Oh my gosh, it’s so bad. It’s about 10 times worse here,” says Pickler, 25, fighting through sniffles Tuesday during a phone interview from her home. “Nashville’s like a bowl. Everything falls down in it. And our winter wasn’t that good of a winter, so it makes the pollen even worse.” – Read more at WCNC.com

American Idol Love Match! Alums Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young Open Up About Their Relationship – “We got to do the revival of Hair in New York together. It was awesome. I mean, instantly, we were best friends and we had to go through something together that was already life-changing—doing a show with such depth to it. And also doing things on stage that we had never done before, like disrobing,” Young told us.
“It was like takin’ out for a test drive almost, before you had to purchase it,” 24-year-old DeGarmo quipped about her “hunky” significant other. See the Video at EOnline

“We’ve had some extremely interesting conversations”: Cheryl describes her relationship with “frenemy” Simon Cowell – “We’re friends. Well, frenemies. No, I didn’t get a call [when I was axed]. But I have spoken to him since many times. Were they interesting conversations? Definitely. Extremely interesting. But I haven’t thought about working with Simon again. I’ve enjoyed this past year making this record and am glad I’ve had the time to do that.” – Read more at Mirror.co.uk

That’s what I do, that’s what I do well,” Green says. “A bare stage, that’s no fun.” But even after a the difficult split, Green is still a fan of Martin. “I believed in her because I like quirk. I believe that quirk works,” he says. – Read more at Zap2it

Dancing With the Stars Backstage Scoop: Alum Jennie Garth Spills on Her Divorce! Plus, the Eliminated Contestant Reacts – “I’m feeling great, I really am,” she told us. “I live my life that way. So whatever will be, will be. If it was my path to still be here, I would be here. This was a great time to come over here and do this for a month and a half.” That great time also equalled a staggering 60-pound weight loss, which has left Gladys over the moon and feeling better than ever. – Read more at EOnline

Gladys Knight Unfazed By ‘DWTS’ Elimination – “It feels great,” she said. “It was like a reunion. You know when you get ready to leave after everybody’s come to town and you ate up all the barbecue and potato salad and everybody had their arguments and their good hugs and kisses and it’s all over and everybody [goes] back to their different homelands or whatever it is? That’s all it is.” – See the Video at ET

‘Dancing With the Stars': Jaleel White on rumors and his new ‘Fear Factor’-meets-‘Punk’d’ show on Syfy – Jaleel White has been tabloid fodder ever since rumors of his rifts with Dancing With the Stars pro and partner Kym Johnson hit high gear. But the former Family Matters star isn’t letting the unfavorable attention get under his skin. “Tabloids like to have a lot of fun with the show. That’s something I had to learn,” he told EW during a visit to the New York office a few days ago. “They descend on this show like locusts… I’m fine, Kym’s fine. You don’t get through a dance duel like that if you’re not fine, I’ll tell you that.” – Read more at Entertainment Weekly

ENews Interviews Chris Colfer at the Struck By Lightning After Party

The “Glee” star-turned-screenwriter gushes about his new film “Struck by Lightning.” Plus, what did he learn from being around stars like Allison Janney?

Chris Colfer: ‘I Can’t Be Expected to Promote the Same Stuff in Everything That I Do’ – Struck By Lightning is a good-natured opportunity for Colfer to stretch his acting legs, but it doesn’t arrive without controversy. In one scene, Carson blackmails two gay students into writing for his magazine, threatening to out them if they don’t comply. The moment is particularly strange considering Colfer’s work — his Glee character Kurt has arguably advanced the acceptance of gay youth on television and Colfer continues this advocacy off screen. When I asked him if the scene aligned with his sensibilities, he seemed conflicted. “Isn’t that crazy? I hope they don’t get mad at me for that. I definitely thought they might, but I think they’d also want to me to handle high school how high school is. – Read more at Hollywood.com

The new EW with The Avengers on the cover has a 2 page interview with Carrie, it’s their Soundtrack Of My Life feature.

Song that reminds her of her childhood: Top Of The World by the Carpenters. She talks about Karen Carpenter’s voice.
First song she remembers singing: She says there’s photographic proof of her singing Jesus Loves You at the age of 3 but her first memory is singing Somewhere Out There by Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram when she was 7. She makes a funny comment about how she apparently went diva and grabbed the mike for herself, stealing the show.
Song/album she associates with her first crush: Matchbox 20, Yourself Or Someone Like You because she had a crush on an older guy when she was in 7th grade, and he was into alternative rock, which is how she got into alternative rock, but also poppier songs like Matchbox 20.
Song she associates with Idol: Tiffany, Could’ve Been. She knows people might pick Alone but for her, Tiffany’s song was the one she was wanting to sing and one she thought people wouldn’t expect from her
Billy Idol is her answer to another one but I don’t remember what the question was.
Album that people would be surprised she loves would be by Hole, I think it’s Live Through This. She talks about Courtney Love standing out as a female rocker.
Favorite song to sing is How Great Thou Art. She likes challenging songs and she loves the reaction from the audience when she sings this one.
Song that makes her cry is Forever Changed on her new album. She says she knows it’s her own song but she can hardly talk about it without getting emotional because of the story in the song.
Song she wants to be remembered by is Jesus Take The Wheel instead of Before He Cheats or Good Girl because she sees JTTW as a song that means something to people who’ve gone through a hard time.

Obviously there’s more to what Carrie says, it’s a good read.

There isn’t a review of the album in EW yet (review copies were sent out yesterday) but the intro blurb talks about how despite her state of marital bliss, Carrie’s new album has dark songs like the title track and the “twangy rocker” Two Black Cadillacs, which features two women taking revenge on a cheater. Carrie’s quoted as saying she doesn’t sing love songs and she loves strong women songs that show them getting over bad situations with grace and vengeance.

A bunch more Carrie radio interviews popped up from yesterday. She talks about AI, Colton getting booted, and also Jessica being voted out and saved the week before in this interview and this one. In the Go Country 105 interview that’s linked first she says she says it’s not 100% confirmed what she’ll sing at the Billboard Music Awards but she thinks it’ll be a different song off the album than Good Girl. In this interview with a Phoenix station she says she’ll be out in LA doing promo during the Nashville-Phoenix round 2 playoff series so she could pop in for games.

If she doesn’t sing Good Girl, it’s gonna be second single Blown Away.  I would love that!  Would be a good idea too considering she’ll likely perform GG already on her Letterman and Kimmel TV appearances, as well as on Idol if she performs there before the finale.

    John Lydon:

“”We have the genuine article but that’s not as good as the fake

the world make you shiver and you’re going to cover it in marshmallow. Write
your own songs, fella, and then I’ll judge you.”

Clearly the Sex Pistols believe in only the genuine article.

You tell him, Johnny! Goodness knows that you have never, at any point in your career, ever covered any other artist. Not even early on to get a bar gig or two. Nobody can ever put a new twist on a song. Certainly not anything by The Who or Monkees.

    Grumpy old arse.

Found this comment on the John Lydon vs. Simon Cowell article:

“A bit rich coming from someone who was in a manufactured band based on image put together by Cowell’s precursor Malcolm McLaren.”

    Interesting!

  • Valentin432

To me that sounds a lot like Constantine. Bo wouldn’t cover the Sex Pistols.

I also agree with the decision to not let songs from that band performed on AI, it just doesn’t sound like a good idea, it would look like Casey covering Smells Like Teen Spirit, a bad joke.

ITA. It’d be great for her to showcase multiple songs off the album.

Here’s another Carrie radio interview with another Phoenix radio station KMLE. They actually made a hockey bet since Nashville and Phoenix now face each other. If the Coyotes win the series then Carrie has to sing a Coyotes song written by the DJs when she plays the arena during her tour. If the Preds win then the DJs will go on a strict vegan diet for a month.

There’s also a hilarious bit at the end where Carrie talks about going to a LA Kings hockey game either just before or soon after she started dating Mike and sitting in the seats between the benches for the 2 teams. She says there were players not paying attention to the game because she got pucks with phone numbers. She would later show these pucks to Mike and he apparently knows at least some of the guys.

    Thanks for sharing windmills!

For those that can’t click and listen to Carrie’s interview, here’s what she said about her tweets to/about Colton:

“I mean I never come out and publicly support people because they go through so much they don’t need that….I don’t want them to be like ‘Oh, she supported so and so’….I really did like Colton and I really thought he would make it a lot further than he did.”

This was the tweet she posted on results night –>
    Carrie Underwood ? @carrieunderwood
Colton gone on Idol tonight?!?! What?!?! Really thought I’d see him in the finale…’tis a sad night, indeed.

Maybe they will see each other in Nashville. :)

” Once you’ve heard the genuine Who or Monkee version of a song, who
would want to hear the fake phoney version by a band like the Sex
    Pistols?

    Grumpy old arse.”

*chuckle* Indeed. But he was a grumpy young one as well. And, he’s got his ‘Simon’s’ confused – Cowell didn’t run the show – that was Simon Fuller. Cowell worked for him – although his PR machine back in the day was effective enough that people were constantly making references as if he did. Obviously, John there still doesn’t have a clue.

  • Nele621

I know Cook made a lot of TV appearances, but did he do the mini-concert that Carrie is doing? I hope Kris gets to do that too. But then, what is the viewership of Kimmel?

  • Incipit

“Singer-songwriter and American Idol® winner David Cook will honor the
brain tumor community with a rare acoustic performance at the Night of
Hope benefit at the State Theater in Falls Church, Virginia on Saturday,
May 5th. The cocktail style reception will feature a moving program and
intimate storyteller’s style acoustic performance by Cook. “

Oh, that is a really nice write up, leading in to an excellent comprehensive article. Thanks for posting it, mj.

I am especially intrigued by that “story tellers style” acoustic performance phrase, because that’s one of my favorite things, when David will tell some of his stories in between the songs – mostly it has happened at those short radio station acoustic concerts, but always so enjoyable, with interesting and humorous previously unknown bits.

Between the Clovis show in Fresno tomorrow and this Night of Hope concert, there are some cool things coming, with Tiger Jam on Saturday, and AI soon as well…with whatever the new song turns out to be.

Also, curious to meet the new drummer. That too.

ETA: Nele, David did Kimmel’s mini concert for DCTR, on 1/13/09 – we got five songs and soundcheck. It was rerun in February. IDK if it’s still on the webpage.

  • http://twitter.com/ljrTR LJR

nice to see promo for David Cook’s Night of Hope performance.  The article says that some cancer survivors & persons being treated are being recognized during the evening –
    “I’m honored
to perform at the Night of Hope as we pay tribute to some very
courageous young people who are battling this disease,” said David Cook.
“We are raising critical research dollars that will help us get closer
    to a cure.”

I hope David manages to sell out the Concert for Hope. The venue is about a mile from my house but I’m still undecided about going.

I went last year (my first and only Cook show excluding the Idol tour) and there was a little too much cray cray for my taste. I asked my daughter if she would go with me again, but she was assaulted in the face with a 50 year old spandex and sequin-clad boob last year so she passed, lol.

I like Carrie’s “five necessities.” Very sensible. And the dogs are really cute.

VERY sad that the crazy fans still haunt Cook.  I’ve seen four of his shows, stayed in the back, never bothered anybody.  I would jump at the chance to see him again.

Included on this year’s list are Jennifer Lopez and David Archuleta. There are a few people on there that I didn’t even know were Latino.

I don’t think I saw anyone else Idol-related but with 11 seasons its kind of hard for me to keep up anymore lol. Bless everyone who keeps up with them all for the numbers thread!

Prime_Minister and other Colton fans, if you want to hear Carrie complimenting Colton in more detail, you should check out the middle part of KMLE interview. She thinks he’s a star. After saying that she emphasizes she wants to be a friend and mentor to the contestants, not the kind who expresses her favorites and non-favorites. In other interviews she’s said she doesn’t think she would’ve made it far this season if she were competing because of the high level of all around talent.

Here are some more quotes and video teasers from tonight’s Nightline Carrie interview. And, here’s a funny interview she did this morning with Big D & Bubba. Carrie also cohosted WSIX’s morning show (also funny). The funniest interview clip may be the KILT one. The DJs did the audio equivalent of “photobombing” Carrie during their interview by randomly interjecting David Lee Roth screams from Van Halen’s Runnin With The Devil into their interview.

  • http://twitter.com/ljrTR LJR

No the best part of a David Cook concert is hearing him rock out with his great band, enjoying his interactions with the audience, getting new twists on older songs, maybe getting a new song no one else has heard yet. But especially his voice.

and I’m really, really tired of all the insults over-50 year old people get by the way.  I hope all those doing the insulting get to live to be over 50.
Oh and I was never told at what age I was supposed to stop attending concerts.  I don’t wear anything that embarrasses my daughter, so I’m okay in that regard.

Those not participating in spandex and boob related tomfoolery – or other assorted mockable behaviors at Cook concerts, or any other concert for that matter, have nothing to be concerned about. Those still lost somewhere in arrested adolescence, or just indulging in plain ridiculous or inappropriate behavior leave themselves WIDE open to be poked and mocked.  Cook fans have an enduring rep for some… UM… interesting behavior at his concerts, is all. Since I’m not really that much a fan of his music, and don’t foresee that changing, (big) IF I were to attend a performance, the boob and spandex show  would probably be of more interest to me… to each their own :)

    I think five songs.

    Only five…?

Eh, so I shouldn’t count on Pop That Lock and Broken English?

NCOE and Trespassing are a safe bet. One slow/ish song: BTIKM or OOL or both. Plus Cuckoo/Shady?

Whyyyy must this album be so good that I can’t even choose what I’d want to hear the most?

On the bright side: the album is so good that I’ll be happy with anything.
