Steven Tyler Schools Supreme Court on Broadcast Regulation, First Amendment – If the U.S. Supreme Court is willing to listen, rocker Steven Tyler has something “old school” to say about nudity and profanity on broadcast TV. “There’s a certain charm and passion and magic in not showing full-frontal nudity” or using constant profanity, Tyler said, as the high court prepared to take up a First Amendment case on the regulation of the airwaves. “It’s really hot when you only show a little,” he said. – Read more at FOX News

Damian McGinty Talks Returning For ‘Glee’ Season 4, New Love Interest (Or Two) & ‘The Glee Project’ – n real life, Damian McGinty is just as sweet as he was on “The Glee Project,” and just as adorable as he’s been as Rory Flanagan on “Glee” this season. And yes, the boy can sing, which is why they’ve kept him around on “Glee” even longer than his prize as the winner of “The Glee Project” initially called for. But how many more episodes will he be on? Is he coming back next season? And when is he going to get a love interest? – Read more at Huffington Post

Daniel Radcliffe Recalls ‘Lovely Chat’ With Darren Criss – For a while, it was a running joke between Daniel Radcliffe and Darren Criss that the “Harry Potter” star and “A Very Potter Musical” star had yet to meet, even though the two shared a “Potter” connection, celebrity status and Criss succeeded Radcliffe in the hit Broadway revival of “How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.” MTV News recently caught up with Radcliffe, and he revealed that, at long last, the two actors finally met just before Criss took over Radcliffe’s role for a limited run. – See the Video at MTV

On The Set: Glee’s Michael Jackson Tribute Episode – The thunder’s just stopped rumbling, but a storm’s still a-brewin’ in a chilly parking garage just outside the Paramount Studio gates on a gusty Hollywood night. Inside, oblivious drivers exiting for the evening pass choreographer Zach Woodlee putting the warmly bundled-up Glee kids through a rigorous routine. Having only just been introduced to their complicated dance moves, the physically drained troupe will be in costume and before cameras in less than an hour shooting their big “Bad” production number — the crown jewel in a tribute episode to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, that airs on Tuesday, January 31. Rebecca Ferguson’s (X-Factor UK) single Nothing’s Real But Love is out today (US) amazon and itunes.

So Kris is still in the writing process?  If that’s the case, I can’t imagine him getting a single out 1st quarter.

Jennifer Hudson’s new book “I Got This – How I Changed My Ways and Lost What Weighed Me Down”

I find it quite something that Jennifer is all about “weight” and yet her biggest claim to fame (yet) was her role in Dreamgirls which she wouldn’t have gotten if she was thin and trim.

Good for Jenn that she has lost weight…but all this emphasis on the fact just gives more “credence” to the age old adage that skinny is better.  I admire people who can loose unwanted pounds…but I don’t admire people who say that the loss of those unwanted pounds “changed their life” to the extent Jennifer has.  Not everyone has the time or money to put weight as their main priority…in fact most people I know really have little of both and for a wealthy star to be the spokesperson for a diet program where their lives are all about their “image” doesn’t appeal to me at all.  I hated the former Duchess of York being a spokesperson and I guess I “hate” Jennifer doing it to.

And I don’t see Lauren and Jordin raking in the bucks for getting thin…but then their motivation wasn’t about money, was it.

I prefer Reba hosting by herself.  I thought Blake didnt do too well as cohost last year.  Maybe it was the writing, I don’t know.  He seems better to do things off the cuff.

  • Mateja Praznik

    Wow, love the cover.

One Direction have both versions of their album on iTunes US as a preorder. Their album has the same release date as Adam Lambert.

So Kris is still in the writing process?  If that’s the case, I can’t imagine him getting a single out 1st quarter.

I think he was talking about recording it since he’s in studio recording right now and tweeted a picture of some recording software.

Still, it wouldn’t surprise me if Kris is still writing. Writing songs seems to be like breathing for him, so I suspect that’s he’s writing all the time. It doesn’t necessarily have to be for this album (and it is not unheard of to get last minute submissions to an album if somebody writes something good). He does sell songs to other artists too.

  • Anonymous

No, he was recording last night. He’s been done with the writing process for awhile (for this album anyway, although he seems like one of those people who is always writing)

ETA – People have been tweeting him asking him to share some lyrics for months now. Maybe he just decided to throw us a bone last night :)

So Kris is still in the writing process?  If that’s the case, I can’t imagine him getting a single out 1st quarter.

Kris is a writer, so I doubt that there’s ever a time where he is not working on that part of his craft.  But that particular tweet included this picture, http://instagr.am/p/f79Cw/, which shows that he was in the process of recording and editing together this “vibey” song.

  • Anonymous

I agree. I like Blake & think he’s funny. But he wasn’t a good cohost last year. Maybe it was nerves & he’ll be better this time around. I like Reba hosting by herself, too. If they have to have a male cohost, I like Vince Gill because they would have good chemistry. I like Brad cohosting with Carrie, but Brad’s humor I don’t think will work with Reba.

Haleyreinhart.com finally added a Bio for her. Pretty interesting tidbits, turns out she did a lot of acting in Middle/High School and modeled for a while. American Idol really dropped the ball on her backstory is the biggest thing I get from this.

They do that every year. When the season is over we always find out about someone with an interesting backstory that was never mentioned (like Kris almost dying while on a charity mission overseas) that makes me go WTF? Heh. I kinda wish I could be a fly on the wall to hear how these backstory decisions are made. But at least we found out Haley’s parents had a band on air!

The Philippine fans are preparing for David Archuleta’s arrival.  They sure are organized.

    Team Airport!

Okay guys, it’s time to welcome The Archuleta to the Philippines, once again, Pinoy style.

Most of you are probably very familiar with this drill now, given our Airport welcomes in 2009, 2010, 2011.
This time however, we’re gonna face a big challenge as the call time
would be rather early. But considering this is probably the LAST time
we’ll get to welcome David, at least within the next two years, then
come rain or shine, may all hell break loose, WE. ARE. WELCOMING. DAVID.
    ARCHULETA.

    Read further for details:

    1) Registration for Team Airport will be from Tuesday until Wednesday 9:00 PM. (We will need lead time for the vans and for airport permit). Please confirm attendance to AP’s twitter – @archuletaphils or comment in this post. Please tweet us your name and your contact number.
    2) Meeting place is Wendy’s along Boni Edsa. (A marks the spot; Click to enlarge)

    3) Meeting time is 4:00 AM. Vans will leave for the airport at exactly 4:30 AM. (We won’t wait for those who are late, even if they text that they are on their way.)

    4) Fee for the van is P150. (We will collect at Wendy’s.)

To the younger kids, if your folks would
let you, you can contact your other archufriends and all head to
Wendy’s ahead of time (probably around 11 or 12) and wait until the rest
of the group comes. That way, you wouldn’t have to travel in the wee
    hours of the morning.
Everyone is welcome. Pinoy Archies, Pinoy Archangels, Archietects, Archienoys — we’re all in this together!

I think Idol pushes the backstories that appeal to the lowest common denominator.  If it’s not something that would qualify for The Jerry Springer Show or a cheap soap opera, they won’t bother with it.

I just love the Filipino Archuleta fans.  They are super sleuths and are always so organized.  He will get star treatment from his fans the entire time he is there.  It looks like it will be a really busy few weeks for David, but he is a very hard worker and he will handle it all with his usual smile.

Not everybody gets a backstory-it’s just the way it is and the way it’s always been.

  • Nele621

Didn’t Daughtry release his single while he was still working on his album?

  • Tess

I think the Idol contestants that don’t get much of a backstory are the lucky ones.  They might not be the “favs” at the starting gate because people sitting at home are all about their “lives” with no regards to their talent…but as the season progresses they get voted forward by their talent connecting with viewers and not their “stories” (aka Danny Gokey) being the driving force behind their victories.  In the real world, once they leave Idol, these stories help little in helping them achieve real success.

  • Anonymous

I think Idol pushes the backstories that appeal to the lowest common denominator.  If it’s not something that would qualify for The Jerry Springer Show or a cheap soap opera, they won’t bother with it.

I think that idol and the rest of the shows are staffed by people who want to leave their own mark on their respective shows, so instead of letting storylines happen organically, they feel the need to come up with stories on their own, and then edit the contestants into taking on a role that may or may not suit them.  Since these shows air weekly, it’s understandable why stories are needed, but sometimes the people in charge tend to focus on the wrong thing.  For example, Simon Cowell loves negative drama, which is why he continuously pushed the idea that there was bad blood between him and LA Reid, as well as the idea that it was a battle between the four teams.  He completely ignored the compelling stories of the contestants, in order to make the story about him and the rest of the judges.

Tess said: I think the Idol contestants that don’t get much of a backstory are the lucky ones. In the real world, once they leave Idol, these stories help little in helping them achieve real success.

If these contestants make it far, they get the Underdog label, so they take on a character and role too. The downside for these people is that it’s harder for them to build up a strong AI fanbase, which is not the end of the world, and it’s harder for them to make it through the entire final round.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

If by lowest common denominator you mean they try to boil people down into easy-to-digest characters I agree: “the widower”, “the all american country boy”, “guy with disabled fiance”, etc. It’s like if you can’t make it fit in less than 5 words they won’t air it.

  • Tess

So who in Idol’s history has made it to the final 2 based on their backstory?  The obvious answer might be Fantasia…but I think she had/has the talent regardless of her “story”.  And who got “dumped” early by the voters just because they didn’t have anything “interesting” that was brought up week after week.

I can’t answer that because I still think the voters vote for a myriad of reasons…I may feel Danny G. only made it as far as he did because he brought his late wife into the picture; James, because of his disabilities but all and all I think the back-stories pretty much leave the room once its down to the top 12/13.  Just my opinion.

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

In the real world, once they leave Idol, these stories help little in helping them achieve real success.

Not so sure about that. It may not be about those *particular* stories, but it’s hardly escaped anyone’s notice how press coverage — especially involving salacious, juicy, or controversial topics — about an artist’s personal life doesn’t seem to hurt them any and, in many cases, helps them if only by keeping them in the headlines and front and center in the public’s consciousness. And, it’s a miracle how often these type of things seem to happen right around the time an artist’s new work is being released.

I don’t think Jennifer’s motivation was about the money either. As she had said in interviews she had already begun her weight loss process before the eventual WW endorsement and all that has stemmed from it.
BUT I do not blame her in the least for capitalizing on the fact that she has lost the weight. It is part of her story, and it has helped to change her career and most probably life. I think she has earned the right to talk about it how she pleases.  Many folks want to lose weight and many folks need to lose weight. If learning how a person who has been overweight  most of her life learned how to lose the weight at the same time she earned another level of career fame and fortune helps someone, fantastic!  Jennifer’s story is just that, her story. Folks can listen to it, read it, or ignore it.

Jennifer wants to act, and in Hollywood – really theatre companies across the globe – additional pounds mean less roles. I can tell you I have experienced this personally. So losing weight and shaping up has indeed most likely opened up a world of possiblities for her.

The reason(s) Jennifer has an opportunity to make money from her loss of weight while Jordin and Lauren have not is simple. Jennifer has achieved a level of fame  that the other two ladies haven’t.  Not only has she won an Oscar, she appeared in another blockbuster hit (Sex in the City) among other films  and (through no fault of her own) had her name in headlines for the tragedy that struck her family. People in and out of the Idol bubble know her by sight if not by name. The fact that she achieved fame as a large woman and now is thin is another  reason WW would want to have her.  Additionally she actually used and continues to use the product. I don’t know about Lauren as I don’t keep up with her, but Jordin has credited her weight loss – which hasnt been as dramatic as that of Jennifer’s – to just cutting back on food and increasing her excercise. No company owns the patent on that approach.

I hope Lees not wearing flip flops. LOL. Just kidding Love Lee.

I think at first it wasn’t about boiling them down to easy-to-digest characters because the idol audience demographic was different in the beginning.  Some one like Fantasia could win back then but now the voting demographic has changed and since it’s mostly women from the conservative southern region, they do try and cater to that demographic now.

  • koshka

” I think the back-stories pretty much leave the room once its down to the top 12/13.  Just my opinion.”

Nah… I think it carries on deeper and longer than that. Some more and some less than others – IMO.

What Not to Sing examined this issue pretty thoroughly in this article.
Their analysis indicates that having a promoted backstory can give a strong advantage to an Idol contestant.  They don’t, however, make any distinction between in the drama of the backstory — so they give Adam’s “trying to make it in Hollywood” story as much weight as Danny’s “lost my wife four weeks ago” one or Kai Kalama’s “taking care of my invalid mother” one.

Tess: In the real world, once they leave Idol, these stories help little in helping them achieve real success.

Except for Chris Medina, who was able to put out a single and make an impressive round of TV appearances based solely on his backstory.  I’m not begrudging him any success that he’s had from it at all.  I think there’s definitely room for that in the music world.  But he does show that, once in a while, a good backstory can take you farther than talent alone will.

For others, it may not be the determining factor, but it does help fans feel like they know a person and maintains interest in them.  David Archuleta’s backstory was interesting enough for him to write a book about it.  Danny Gokey’s story was compelling enough for him to create a foundation based on it (which he started even before he was on the show).  Fantasia’s story became a reality series.  And we’re still fascinated about whether Adam ever buys that house or James can afford those diapers yet!

I still think it is unfair that some don’t get any backstories at all, not even a full 30 seconds of audition.
How can you get the audience votes on the semifinal if nobody even heard you sing before ?

As usual, I will try to predict who will get to top 24 or 36, whatever, based on their camera time. Usually I’m right 3/4 of the time.
I’ve skipped the spoiler lists, so I don’t know anything.

  • Anonymous

I still think it is unfair that some don’t get any backstories at all, not even a full 30 seconds of audition.

The only area where the X Factor did better than AI was letting us see and get to know pretty much everyone (with the exception of the individual members of the groups) who made it to the live rounds.  AI did better with this than they ever have before during season 10.   And if we are going to have a one week semi final round, they need to continue to expand the Hollywood week round, and use that as the time to show us the top 24-40 contestants.  It makes no sense to put people into a sudden death voting round, if we’ve never seen them before.

I thought the writing for him was atrocious. I think he can be pretty funny on his own — I probably have the sense of humor of a 15 year old boy, but his #nowplaying tweets, for example are usually fairly hilarious — but it seems like once the writers realized they’d have Blake Shelton, they made an effort to write the most tired, offensive jokes they could get away with. They were probably going for funny and outlandish, trying to match his image. But they couldn’t manage either, so it just came back around to lame. I mean, honestly. Brokeback Mountain jokes in 2011?  That entire performance was the very definition of 2005 called; it wants its jokes back.

    Oh, look. I’m still annoyed.

Testing . . .  (I tried to make a comment on the evening thread about an upcoming James Durbin appearance this Friday, but it didn’t go through.)

So as not to waste this comment, in case it goes through . . .

Re Kris Allen writing songs.  I have read interviews with many successful artists who say they write new songs constantly.  The fact that Kris is writing says nothing about his career, good or bad, other than he’s a compulsive songwriting.  Like that’s a bad thing!  ;-)  I’m sure the songs (as is true for any artist) will vary in quality.  But it never hurts to have a large collection to pick from.

Whoops!  I accidently duplicated the same link.  Here is the second link, that takes you directly to the information about the James Durbin appearance:

Blake Shelton and Reba McIntyre are returning as hosts of the Annual Academy of Country Music Awards.

I would like Luke Bryan to host with Reba, the guy is hilarious! http://goo.gl/AUKt0
