‘Smash’ premiere: Chicago’s early peek at NBC’s Broadway musical drama – Another tie to the reality TV world: Katherine McPhee, who stars as Broadway hopeful Karen Cartwright. If the applause from the Chicago audience is any indication, McPhee could be poised for a major breakout this mid-season. Assuming, that is, that the show resonates with a broad audience. Daniel Radcliffe Recalls ‘Lovely Chat’ With Darren Criss – For a while, it was a running joke between Daniel Radcliffe and Darren Criss that the “Harry Potter” star and “A Very Potter Musical” star had yet to meet, even though the two shared a “Potter” connection, celebrity status and Criss succeeded Radcliffe in the hit Broadway revival of “How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.” MTV News recently caught up with Radcliffe, and he revealed that, at long last, the two actors finally met just before Criss took over Radcliffe’s role for a limited run. – See the Video at MTV

On The Set: Glee’s Michael Jackson Tribute Episode – The thunder’s just stopped rumbling, but a storm’s still a-brewin’ in a chilly parking garage just outside the Paramount Studio gates on a gusty Hollywood night. Inside, oblivious drivers exiting for the evening pass choreographer Zach Woodlee putting the warmly bundled-up Glee kids through a rigorous routine. Having only just been introduced to their complicated dance moves, the physically drained troupe will be in costume and before cameras in less than an hour shooting their big “Bad” production number — the crown jewel in a tribute episode to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, that airs on Tuesday, January 31. I prefer Reba hosting by herself. I thought Blake didnt do too well as cohost last year. Maybe it was the writing, I don’t know. He seems better to do things off the cuff.

I thought the writing for him was atrocious. I think he can be pretty funny on his own — I probably have the sense of humor of a 15 year old boy, but his #nowplaying tweets, for example are usually fairly hilarious — but it seems like once the writers realized they’d have Blake Shelton, they made an effort to write the most tired, offensive jokes they could get away with. They were probably going for funny and outlandish, trying to match his image. But they couldn’t manage either, so it just came back around to lame. I mean, honestly. Brokeback Mountain jokes in 2011?  That entire performance was the very definition of 2005 called; it wants its jokes back.

    Oh, look. I’m still annoyed.

Testing . . .  (I tried to make a comment on the evening thread about an upcoming James Durbin appearance this Friday, but it didn’t go through.)

So as not to waste this comment, in case it goes through . . .

Re Kris Allen writing songs.  I have read interviews with many successful artists who say they write new songs constantly.  The fact that Kris is writing says nothing about his career, good or bad, other than he’s a compulsive songwriting.  Like that’s a bad thing!  ;-)  I’m sure the songs (as is true for any artist) will vary in quality.  But it never hurts to have a large collection to pick from.
