Danielle Bradbery’s “My Day” to be Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics Theme (AUDIO)

What a great break for The Voice winner, Danielle Bradbery. According to a Facebook post, from songwriter, Mallory Hope, her song “My Day” which appears on Danielle’s self-titled debut, will appear in an ad promoting NBC’s Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics coverage.

The first ad will appear tonight.

I am so excited and thankful that my song “My Day” recorded by Danielle Bradbery (winner of the voice) will be the “Theme Song” for the 2014 Winter Olympics. The first commercial will air tonight on NBC during the voice. I have a show in Dallas so I will miss it. Baby you better hit record on the DVR for me. Huge thanks to Allison Jones and everyone at Big Machine for believing in my song and allowing DB to cut it. When I wrote this song 5 years ago and recorded it, I told everyone I knew that if I ever got the chance to make a video I could see the vision in my head of what I would want. I wanted to incorporate scenes from The biggest loser, breast cancer walks, soldiers returning home from war, kids graduating & yes even the Olympics. I tried, but couldn’t bring my dreams to reality now I understand why. It wasn’t meant for me.. It wasn’t (yes wait for it) “My Day” it is her day. It is pretty amazing how someone else can help make your dreams come true. Even after you thought your moment had passed. So very very happy at this moment.

Congrats Danielle! Fantastic promotion. After the success of American Idol winner, Phillip Phillips’ “Home” during the 2012 summer Olympics, NBC is finally promoting their own reality contestants.

From the NBC press release:

NBC Olympics has partnered with the Emmy Award-winning program “The Voice” to create a joint promotional campaign featuring Season Four winner Danielle Bradbery. The campaign, which debuts tonight on “The Voice” at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, is built around Bradbery’s performance of her song “My Day,” which captures the inspirational message of the Olympic Games, and is interspersed with footage of Olympic athletes.

Promotional spots of varying length — 30-second, 60-second and song-length versions — will air across NBCUniversal’s family of networks in the weeks leading into the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. “My Day” is featured on Bradbery’s self-titled debut album, which was released on November 25.

UPDATE:

Here’s the 60 second promo:

  • Danielle Fan!

    WOW, this is fantastic promo.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Congrats to Danielle! Quite the coup!

  • jpfan2

Great promo but I’ll be honest and say I think the song kind of sucks. Very sappy. I’m a little surpised NBC went with something this lame but whatever. There is no chance in hell that this will come near the success of Home. Maybe it’s just me but I’m very surprised they went with this. Do folks here like it?

I just find it weird that this will be the soundtrack to ski jumping, bobsled races, etc.

  • sue

This is great promo but the song isn’t very catchy the first listen but I’m sure it will grow on people after they hear it a few hundred times. The song is really wordy. lols Ok it could be a hit. Good luck to Danielle.

  • Tess Herself

Other than the chorus this song is pretty awful, I think. Can’t see it stirring up the heartbeats of sports fans….might be OK for those “heart warming” moments but I can’t see it promoting ice hockey, or skiing. Just not an attention getter.

  • jpfan2

I could see it working for some 13 year old female skater but that’s kind of it. NBC is usually spot on with their musical choices…hmm.

  • l8er

I don’t think it’s “Home” level but I don’t think it’s bad either for something like the Olympics. Then again, I also don’t care which show these people come off of.

  • perfectstorm

This sounds like one of those bad Idol coronation songs.

  • Spurrious

This is a game changer for her. She is a sweet girl with a even sweeter voice. Very deserving!

  • jobeob987

Congrats to Danielle. This is a real coup for her. Can’t say I’m wowed by the song, however, it is nice enough (if a hook-free melody). Then again, you never know how things turn out. This could be huge for her.

  • xGMANx

Here is a video of the song with the Olympics as the backdrop. The chorus is amazing. This song and opportunity will be the catalyst that catapults Danielle’s career into super stardom.

  • Matthew Kitson

Anything besides “Roar”, I’m good with

  • jpfan2

“Like a lotus flower growing in dirt…The sun shines and the rain falls..” Do those seem like winter images to anyone? Ok, I’ll stop piling on but I’m just puzzled by the choice. Maybe this is an attempt to get country fans to watch the Winter Olympics (could be it).

  • alge501

This is great for Danielle. She is proving Blake Shelton correct on claiming she will be the biggest thing to come from The Voice.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

“Like a lotus flower growing in dirt…The sun shines and the rain falls..”

Going all lit-crit on these lyrics will make your head explode. I mean, how many people, when given the image “lotus flower” don’t think of the aquatic kind and do think of the completely unrelated Lotus corniculatus, which does grow in dirt and is used for cattle forage?

But it’s Lotus corniculatus the song has to mean. Its symbolism, in the Victorian language of flowers, was “revenge” — which probably isn’t what it’s supposed to mean within the song. [ETA: Are we sure it's "lotus" and not the more sensible "crocus" suggested by macfae?]

Short answer: The Olympics needs a bunch of inspirational songs, there was room for a placement for a newbie, and this was the “uplifting” song from Bradbery’s album. It doesn’t have to make really large amounts of lyrical sense.

  • macfae

This is quite an honor for Danielle and a huge promo for her.
Yes..it needs an edit to maybe “like a crocus peeping through the snow…the sun sunshines and the flower grows ” would be more appropriate.
But I’m thinking they will mostly just use the chorus.

  • Millerfan

    this is Awesome

  • Bonnie DeMoss

I haven’t seen such an untalented singer get handed stardom this easily since Taylor Swift. At least Taylor can write songs.

  • justmefornow

Well Congrats to her I guess. But I doubt this will do for her what the exposure did for P2.

For one thing, with P2’s Home the exposure was actually during the games themselves, not promo leading up to the games. Do we know if this will actually be played during the broadcast itself? That’s where the main exposure will be.

And the other more important thing is Home was actually a good song. This song is beyond boring, hookless and lame.

  • Tess Herself

Oh my gosh…even with all the exciting scenes that put me to sleep. Have we gotten any confirmation, other than the song writer, that this is truly the “theme” for the winter Olympics and not just being used for some NBC promos.

  • http://dbdailynews.tumblr.com/ Brad Bery

You should listen to the whole song. To say the lyrics should be literally about the winter Olympics is pretty silly if you ask me. If they wanted to attract a country audience they would use a Carrie Underwood song instead of a relatively unknown artist. Maybe “My Day” was chosen because it’s inspirational and a great song.

  • xGMANx

The hook in the chorus is fitting for the Olympics. it’s very catchy and will sell very well. It will definitely go platinum in singles sales. Book it.

  • http://dbdailynews.tumblr.com/ Brad Bery

So, you think Home was a great choice for Summer Olympics? And you think “My Day” has nothing to do with the winter games? Hold on, to me as we go As we roll down this unfamiliar road
And although this wave is stringing us along
    Just know you’re not alone
Cause I’m going to make this place your home

Settle down, it’ll all be clear
Don’t pay no mind to the demons
    They fill you with fear
The trouble it might drag you down
If you get lost, you can always be found

I guess the words “Wave” and “Road” could be loosely applied to the Olympic games…

  • l8er

Do I think this will be a hit like “Home”? No. However, I think it’s perfectly fine for the Olympics. The Olympics always uses songs like this. I don’t think it’ll will launch her quite like Phillips but I think this exposure along with the other stuff she has going (Skechers, Paisley tour, Blake’s support) will certainly help her career. If she were coming of idol…I don’t think I’d see as much criticism….I will say that.

  • Madilo

That is cool for Danielle, i hope the song does great during its exposure and beyond :)

  • Sicola789

I’m sure Phillip got a lot of criticism for it, I know he got his fair share of hate for being the 5th WGWG winner.

  • http://dbdailynews.tumblr.com/ Brad Bery

How about: Like a bobsled rider gliding through the snow….Oh wait they glide on ice……

  • Sicola789

This won’t make her a superstar. Phillip got lucky with his song being good.

  • Bonnie DeMoss

I need to add that I’m thrilled for Mallary Hope! I wish she was singing the song.

  • calliebeckett

IF a FEMALE US figure skater somehow wins the gold medal next year in the olympics this would be the perfect theme song…

  • http://www.mjsbigblog.com/ mjsbigblog

I don’t think I’d see as much criticism….I will say that.

I guess you don’t read my blog on a regular basis, because this statement is patently false.

During the summer olympics it was basically “fan wars r us” around here when Phillips “Home” was used. Even worse after the song blew up.

  • Darko_5

Congrats to Danielle and Mallory for this hope it brings them both attention to their respective careers. The song is nice and the This is my day works.

  • Anny_nanny

It is wonderful that NBC started doing promo for the winners of the Voice. I hope Danielle will be the first in this list and in the future it will become a tradition.
Congratulations to Danielle, I hope fans of country music love this song.

  • Incipit

“…from songwriter, Mallory Hope, her song “My Day” which appears on Danielle’s self-titled debut, will appear in an ad promoting NBC’s Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics coverage.”

If it’s a fact, then Mallory Hope may be headed for some nice Bank – and good for her! The Label which bought the track from her will also get an immediate pay back – how much depends on how well the public takes to the song. Nice revenue stream from Sync Rights from the Promo Ad too!

It doesn’t work for me much – but neither have any of the other songs that got attached to the Olympics – (OK, ToML was apt, but cheesy) except maybe the Winter Olympics in Vancouver 2010 – when they used “Heroes” for the Bode Miller montage in the closing coverage of NBC’s Prime Time broadcast. The hook from those lyrics was spot on with the Alpine skiing footage, great video – “All these heroes come and go, but you’re still standing!” Especially since I’m reading that Miller may be back for his fifth Winter Olympics in the 2014 Games.

Usually I don’t pay any attention to what music they chose – especially if the lyrics have no relevance – – and this song wouldn’t get my attention any more than the Drew Pearson/Greg Holden song did. Hope it works out for Mallory (and for Danielle).

    JMO.

And…please don’t ignore my mods. I’m serious. I ban people who don’t follow the guidelines.

  • Danielle Fan!

So is this just going to be used in the commercial adds, or is this NBC’s theme song for the games? Will it be used in the games, is what I’m asking?

  • TravelinThru

Maybe they’ll clear that up when they talk about it tonight during The Voice…

  • calliebeckett

I quite love the chorus…the verses need some work. I’m sure NBC will play the chorus a lot.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Okay, finally kicked enough people out of the office to give the song a listen.

Whatever organization is actually using it, they’ll use the chorus. It has the big swoopy feel with the “it’s all about ME and I just KNEW that someday it’d be all about ME” lyrics that get used for these applications. [ETA: And I have no trouble imagining it being used generically, across sports.]

Whether it’ll catch on big is anybody’s guess (and depends on where/how/how often it gets used) but it’s not super-surprising that if somebody promoted it to the song-choosers, it got chosen.

  • Sicola789

It’s like they remembered they had contestants lol.

  • Eileen99

Wow, great news for Danielle! The Voice seems to be getting serious about post-show success.

  • http://www.holyhomo.com/ Rand

I started listening but fell asleep. #snoozefest

  • Anny_nanny

Perhaps the thing that happened with Home made NBC understand that they are sitting on a gold mine.

  • Kaylo17

too soon to tell. The song isn’t that good and I doubt it will go anywhere

  • b_james

I kind of agree. Home really caught on as it tapped into the Mumford fad that was (and still is) sweeping through pop music, and so it felt kind of like a breath of fresh air at the time. This song is just kind of generic.

  • taylor

The fear part worked, but other than that, no. I thought they would have used Girl is On Fire for women’s gymnastics. The lyrics would have been perfect. Who knows why they choose certain songs for different events and commercials? Often times, it doesn’t make sense.

  • xGMANx

According to the song writer it’s the Theme song. Before this news broke today it was circulating on Twitter as the theme song as well

  • taylor

Great news for Danielle! Looks like The Voice has picked it up the past couple of seasons and are learning about how to promote their winners.
She has a some exciting things coming up. Good for her!

  • Matthew

I predicted it. I said NBC needed to use a Voice winners song as the 2014 Olympics theme. Thats what propelled P2 HOME to double platinum status. I thought, however, they would have put this year’s winner single or song into that slot. But I guess they continue to go with the country music can’t fail strategy. (its interesting to speculate how much of Sound of Music ratings were due to Underwood fans – who don’t care about her acting skill. NBC already said they plan to do it again but with another star with huge fan base)

  • Sicola789

Yeah I can’t see it going anywhere.

  • nyc57

I have no idea who this woman is but this song is awful.Sounds like a typical Idol coronation song.I’m no fan of P2,but that was a good song.Surely they could have found a better song than this.

  • dd999

Congratulations! Danielle!!! Your song “This is My Day” is a great choice for the Olympians. As I recall, Danielle said she chose this song for her album because it reminds her of the day she won The Voice. This song, I think, portrays the hard work, that noone sees,(eg: the lotus growing in the dirt) that goes into the preparation for the Olympics, and finally the big day arrives! Great song!!!

  • justmefornow

For her sake I hope it does. I have nothing against her, I’m not a country fan, I don’t watch TV and I haven’t heard her album, the rest of the songs could be terrific. This one just isn’t.

  • ladymctech

I agree, for me the chorus works for the Olympics, but I am not sure about the rest of the song.

  • wayne strong

Whoa, this is a huge deal. So much exposure for her.

  • wordnerdarchie

I like Danielle. She has a very pretty voice, is cute and personable. She should have a great career if they give her great songs. I’m not sold on this one, but if it’s used correctly with inspiring moments attached to its airing, it could take off and do well.

  • Sue tiedemann

I like Danielle and her singing but this song doesn’t seem all that fitting for the Olympics. Maybe it will work. Phillip is not a huge fan of mine but I thought his song was fitting for all the catastrophes that took place. He really lucked out!

  • fuzzywuzzy

I also saw a promo for the Olympics the other day that used “Roar” to accompany clips of athletes, so I think that there are other artists who have made this kind of deal.

  • justmefornow

Yup. I’ve seen this a ton as well. It’s actually on NBC Olympic’s YouTube channel.
Not really a fan of this song either, but this one actually makes more sense..

  • Anny_nanny

Is this my glitch, or the t-shirt of hockey player’s a maple leaf? Go, Canada! lol

ETA. Skier carried the flag of Norway, apparently this is the promo for all participating countries that traditionally win at the Olympics, and not only for the USA.

  • Tess Herself

Unless I am totally misreading the press release this song is being used for NBC ads for the Olympics and is not the official Olympic song. I see a big, big difference and I think Ms. Hope was just a little over-enthusiastic in her facebook post. As others have said, the TV network showing the games have always used various songs during their ads…nothing new here. It isn’t like this will be sung or played at the games themselves by any one other than NBC in its promos.

  • Wfish88

P2 got his song on Olympics because he had a great song. Danielle is getting her song on the Olympics because she was on The Voice

  • Kirsten

Is this my glitch, or the t-shirt of hockey player’s a maple leaf? Go, Canada! lol

It is. That’s actually the Canadians scoring the Gold medal game winning goal in OT against the US. The country literally stopped for that game. I also see Sweden winning in curling and I think we also see Jon Montgomery who went on to host Canada’s edition of The Amazing Race.

  • breakdown

    It’s kinda a boring song, isn’t it?

  • maymay

My day is not a great song but matches the Olympics spirit. It is better than David Cook`s more generic song Time Of My Life that was used as the Olympics song too.

Generally, My Day is worse than Home but better than Time Of My Life. I guess My Day was intentionally written for Olympics. So that is why it is not great but manufactured and generic.

Time Of My Life only sold 1.5m. So being used as Olympics song is not a guarantee to the big success. But My Day still has a chance to sell well:

1.It is a country song. Its mother format Country radio always love to play singing show singer`s music. Alternative radio didn`t want to play Home.

2.Big Machine is good at promos.

3.Home was played three or four times during the Olympics. So the more My Day is played, the more it sells.

I think NBC will never use American Idol`s song again unless The Voice is cancelled.

  • Tess Herself

Time of My Life was actually sung during an Olympic ceremony. Home was used mainly as the music for the women’s gymnastics, and My Day is being used for promo ads….we have no idea if it will be used while the Olympics is in progress.

  • Incipit

“Time of My Life” – sung during an Olympic ceremony.
“Home” – music for the women’s gymnastics.
“My Day”- used for promo ads. (As far as we know)

Interesting, Tess Herself. I really paid no attention to the Olympics in 2012, or the use of that Holden/Pearson song. But that’s three different applications, with varying degrees of exposure and/or repetition, before one even factors in the appeal of the individual song.

I don’t see how they can be compared; since it’s for the Olympics, I will use the expression “level playing field” – they don’t share one.

    IMO.

  • Kirsten

The song is a little too drippy for the Olympics if you ask me. A lot of those same clips were used in the “Roar” commercial that was posted earlier and they weren’t nearly as inspiring or as uplifting set to this dish rag.

I applaud NBC for trying to support their Voice winners, but don’t rob the Olympics of their musical moments by choosing a bad song (get better A&R people). I respect that that they chose “Home” for the 2012 Olympics because that song really does work well with the vibe you are trying to create even though it supported one of their main rivals.

This is no knock on Danielle. She has a beautiful voice and didn’t write this song. Surely there was something better that NBC could have found for her to sing. More appropriate for the moment.

In the 2010 Olympics, the Canadian broadcaster tried to make Nikki Yanosfky happen and it didn’t work. People began to actually resent her for it. Pick the song first, find somebody good to sing it and make it stirring!

  • nyc57

It is a good song but it might not have been discovered if one of the idol producers wasn’t the daughter of the executive producer of the Olympics.

  • Karen C

Time Of My Life only sold 1.5m. So being used as Olympics song is not a guarantee to the big success.

I wouldn’t say 1.5 m is not selling good, it also got a lot of radio play on HAC and still does 5 years later. It can’t compare to Home, either, because it wasn’t promoted as the first single from the album like Home was, and it looks like My Day is too.

  • Anny_nanny

I do not know how it works for you, but we have Summer Olympics are more popular and more people are watching it. But we have a saying: gift horse teeth do not check.

  • MrONegative

I get where he’s coming from. Home is a song that could’ve been on the Friday Night Lights soundtrack. My Day isn’t. These are sports. It’s a fine song for what it is, but it’s not really a sporting song. Music is diegetic. Lyrics are important to a point, but the feel overrides that time and again. I mean look at Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. I wouldn’t begrudge anyone who feels gospel from that song, because music is diegetic, and it’s meant to express something words can’t, even regardless of some of it’s own words.

  • http://www.codieprevostmusic.com/ Codie Prevost

That’s the perfect song for that. Congrats Danielle. Hope to meet you on the road one day.
