The latest case of Idol sound-alike songs comes from this blog that noted some similarities between a song by country singer Brittany McDonald and Carrie Underwood’s latest single, “Cowboy Casanova”.

Last December, before ‘Cowboy Casanova’ was written and recorded, Brittany met with one of the co-writers of the Carrie Underwood single, who heard Bang and loved it. Coincidence that Cowboy Casanova sounds oddly similar to Bang?

Sure the songs sound kinda similar. But did the songwriters rip off Brittany McDonald? If they did, they greatly improved the super-cheesy “Bang!”

Listen for yourself:

Brittany Murphy “Bang!” (after the JUMP…)

Urgh, the song actually sounds similar just for the first 5 seconds. I don’t find any similarities after that.

The only thing similar is the opening beat, which also sounds like Christina Aguilera’s Keeps Gettin’ Better to me. Cowboy Casanova is a better song than Bang.

O.K. let’s not start something that has absolutely no validation. First, I just heard it, and just the beginning of the song sounds a bit similiar. Second, Carrie’s vocal abilities is way above par than Brittany. There is no comparison on the voices. Thirdly, Carrie would never, EVER, record a song that would be considered as a copy-cat. Continued kudos on Carrie’s single!

Bet if I looked hard enough I could find a swarm of songs that sound “like” Cowboy Casanova. Recorded music has been around for a 100 years….bet there isn’t ANYTHING that is totally original anymore. Notes are notes and beats are beats…there will always be some overlap. Just like in reading a novel or watching a TV show…I swear that 50% of what I read or see or listen to is deja vu.

Yeah they have a similar vibe. I prefer the Brittany one.

About all I can say is … My Sweet Lord, He’s So Fine.

Really, there is nothing new under the sun. But I don’t think these two songs sound anything alike. Nice try though for whoever is trying to get hits on that youtube or notice for Brittany Murphy.

Carrie has another hit on her hands.

Publicity stunt, pure and simple. Brittany or whatever her name is used the wrong version of Cowboy Casanova and then spliced and diced to hide the fact the songs have completely different melodies, rhythms, structure, and everything else. There’s no there there and if this is her way of trying to make it in Nashville I think those burned bridges might be more important than the publicity she’s getting now.

Am I the only one who finds it suspicious that she doesn’t even say which writer she met with? I wonder if she’s making it all up because if she said who then they’d be able to deny it.

That being said Kellie Pickler is VERY lucky George Michael has probably never heard Best Days Of Your Life.

    THANK YOU! Very well said.

with all due respect , it was the blogger/alex, not Brittany Murphy who spoke out on the” similarities”. to be fair, the girl isn’t even quoted in that story. its a music blog, they talk about everything related to music, occasionally you’ll find posts like this dissecting new songs or trying to uncover a juicy story.

welcome to the music world. songs are often copied, pasted, edited, etc and passed on from artist to artist. its just the way it works, nothing new. not saying this is the case with this particular song…but even if it was, it really wouldn’t be news.

“with all due respect , it was the blogger/alex, not Brittany Murphy who spoke out on the’ similarities’ . ”

Alex Wilhelm/Crazed Hits (the blogger) just happens to be Brittany’s #1 friend on her Myspace and says this on his Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/crazedhits):

“Alex Wilhelm is the Owner, CEO and Head of A&R of Crazed Hits. Since launching the company in February 2008, he has been instrumental in the discovery and exposure of over 70 major label recording artists prior to their signings, including platinum selling artists and writers Drake (“Best I Ever Had”), BC Jean (“If I Were A Boy”), and Kid Cudi (“Day ‘n’ Nite”), whose songs and recordings have sold a combined 6 million units plus, worldwide. ”

I don’t know how much he’s trumping up his role with those other artists but it’s pretty transparent he thinks this stunt is a way of getting his #1 Myspace friend Brittany her chance at “discovery and exposure”. He’s clearly not just some disinterested blogger.

Bottom line is the 2 songs have different melodies, tempos, and lyrics. They’re in different keys. But some jerk can yell plagiarism and email a bunch of bloggers and get attention anyway. It sucks. There are valid examples of plagiarism out there. This is not one.

Does it sound similar, a little in the beginning. I also find that The Uprising by Muse sounding similar in the beginning and yet it is no where near the same song. Beside Carrie is a much better singer then this girl is, it isn’t even funny.
