Rickey’s cellcast has pretty bad sound, but I could tell it was Sarver singing Nee-Yo. Whoever is cellcasting does a lot of “whooos” so that is killing my eardrums. not sure I can sit through all of this like this. Maybe someone else has something better?
Can’t even tell what is going on right now.

I’m on Rickey’s site, and this is the first time I’ve ever attempted to listen to a cellcast. Is the audio usually this crummy on a cellcast?

Edit to add…I just read the posts from a minute before I posted…I guess this is pretty normal. I’ll attempt to listen to Scott (he was my favorite), and wait for the YouTube videos tomorrow. Gotta get up in about 6 1/2 hours.

Ah – this live casting sucks for us on the east coast – I guess the concert starts at 7pm on the west coast, which makes it 10pm here. Oh, well.

Ahhh ok. According to USA Today’s Brian Mansfield, Lil did a Mary J Blige melody of Just Fine and Without You.

Lil kinda did a Mary J Blige medley with ‘Be Without You” and “Just Fine” so it was I guess three songs, MJB medley, No One, and SIngle Ladies

it seems like the audio is better now than at the beginning. i could hear lil a lot clearer than michael and megan.

Lil sounded good with that Alicia Keys song. Her voice is very rich-sounding. I can’t take the cellcert any more, but I heard some of Scott, too; he has a tenor-ish voice, high and sweet. Hope some good vids show up tomorrow!

Intermish is usually 20 minutes at least. Have to have time for all of the women in the audience to use the restroom, for the dancing Pop Tarts and Guitar Hero schmaltz, for the rush for T-shirts and refreshments, and all the other assorted halftime activities.

Baby grands would have been large and heavy to move. Plus, you have to tune a piano every time you move it so they would have to have piano tuners on hot stand-by in every city. I just don’t see Idol wanting to do that with two pianos.

Those are electronic pianos unless I’m very much mistaken (no place for the strings/sound box to be). Electronic pianos can sound very real these days (ie sound like acoustic pianos and have better tactile response) for relatively cheap these days.

I’m just happy 19E ponied up the cash to bring two pianos with them.

Danny sounded great, and I don’t see the big deal about the speech. It’s a bit cheesy, but it wasn’t like it was religious. Sometimes it’s nice to have the corny stuff in life. Crowd was going absolutely crazy for him according to Twitter. They seem oddly quiet during Adam’s performance, but I think that’s because many of his fans at these concerts may not know about the awesomness that is Led Zeppelin.

Finally, I was able to discern SOMETHING from the cell cast. And generally, I have a great connection and a reliable computer. Adam sounded like he was in a glass jar, in an oil drum at the bottom of the ocean, but I could hear something, finally. Rickey’s reactions were pretty cute though. He was transfixed.

Adam Lambert finished second? You couldn’t tell it from this crowd, which greets the explosive sounds and strobing lights with shrieks. Adam kicks off his set with Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love, and the stage fills with smoke. He’s wearing a blue-and-black metallic-looking studded jacket that comes down to his knees, along with a sleeveless black T-shirt and black pants. Adam Allison and Kris all did amazing. Kris and Adam are different type of performers. Adam is more Freddy Mercury Kris more James Taylor. Both are great and Love both. (much love for Allison too).

Q3, he’s not boring, it’s two different styles that’s it! There are a bunch of people in the crowd who definitely loved it. Remember they are going to do seperate shows in future, so no comparisons.

Your American Idol: Kris Allen

Kris Allen gets a big build-up on the video screens. The stage hands need the time, because they’re setting up a smaller, more intimate environment for him on the stage. It takes a moment for everything to settle into place, but the girls in the audience don’t mind: They fill the pause with their screams of delight.

When Kris finally sings, it’s his version of Kanye West’s Heartless. The crowd is into it, though nothing like they were with Adam. Kris’ career, it seems, will live and die on his songs and their arrangements. Adam, on the other hand, will be able to rely just as much on the reputation of his live performances.

Next up, it’s No Boundaries, but it’s not getting anywhere near the level of reaction that Heartless did. In fact, people are starting to sit down. It’s just inexcusable that the Idol winner has to include a song that elicits that kind of reaction. It’s a set killer. I’d heard the studio version of No Boundaries just enough since the Idol season ended that I’d almost decided it was benign, but Kris has to be royally ticked that he’s been shackled to this ball and chain.

Third song is also from the show: Bill Withers’ Ain’t No Sunshine, followed by Matchbox 20′s Bright Lights. Kris is holding his own, considering how much of a bring-down No Boundaries was, but he’s going to need some big hits of his own if he ever hopes to fill halls this size again. Musically, his brand of pop seems like it might be better suited to smaller halls, like theaters in the 2,500 to 5,000-seat range. During Bright Lights, he leaves the piano and grabs an electric guitar. The audience is thankful and begins to stand again — but maybe just because he’s farther back on the stage and it’s harder to see him. Regardless, the energy level in the hall starts to rise again.

“Has everybody got their lighters out?” he asks. Well, a few of them do. Most of them have cellphones. Or glo-sticks. They wave them happily anyway for the Beatles’ Hey Jude. Kris gets two sets of “na-na-na-nas” on his own, then he gets the audience to sing along — they’re all with him. Several of the Idols return stage to finish, and that brings the remaining few sitters in the crowd. It’s a big love fest — and, more than 40 years after its release, the simple chorus of Hey Jude remains undeniable.

As are the opening piano chords of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing, and Matt and Scott are playing them as they rise out of the stage again behind their pianos. It’s the cheesiest moment of the night, but it’s effective, and the song’s strange song structure is oddly suited for an Idol group sing, since the chorus doesn’t come in until the very end of the song, giving Adam and Kris, who left the stage after Hey Jude, a perfect spot to return to maximum screamage. The Idols spread out around the edge of the stage for a chorus of Steam’s Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye, and they’re back into the Journey chorus. Adam gives the band a shout-out. Bubbles descend from the ceiling. The Idols pump their fists with a final “Don’t stop!” Cue the theme. That’s a wrap.

Sounds from all of you that everyone did great. The temptation to listen was sooooo strong tonight, but I enjoyed the commentary and the pics. Can’t wait for Phoenix show!

The real question: how does Brian Mansfield get those critiques up in real time, coherently, with no typos? I thought Kris sounded really good (well, as good as anyone can from the bottom of the Dead Sea). Maybe my streaming was getting better or maybe I was just getting used to it, but his energy and tone really came through.

Does Kris really really really have to sing NB? I agree with USA today. its a set Killer.

Actually, he was describing how they changed the stage set up to LOOK like more intimate show. He said it took a little time to change the set up from Adam’s big dramatic one.

I just wish Kris could drop that crappy No Boundaries song. Why does he have to do it on tour? The song has been out for over a month — it isn’t going to get some bump in sales now just because he’s doing it on tour.

Let Kris do whatever songs HE wants to do — just like the other 9 Idols get to do.

Still, it sounds like he more than held his own after Adam’s set, which is pretty hard to do. As far as I could tell, no one did poorly. And I bet they all had a blast up on that stage in front of that huge crowd.

What a shock- the reviewers who preferred Adam during the season still prefer him. They still don’t speak for everyone.

I disagree with USA Today (as always :) Adam, IMO, is like the circus clown that comes out in outrageous costumes to get the crowd “up” for the real attraction. I never liked the circus or their clowns.

Absolutely right. I expected that Adam, with inherent theatricality and love of big showmanship, would have a blast in this kind of setting. But just as the AI judges praised his fearlessness, I give props to Kris for doing his thing too. Next time Kris plays a stadium it will be with his own band. This time he’s tied to the format and the wretched coronation song, which he makes sound as good as it possibly can get given its essential dreckyness.

Someone compared his kind of music to James Taylor’s. Sweet Baby James, one of my all time favorite performers, does not play stadiums often. He does a lot of outdoor concerts, larger theaters, etc. And he has a wonderful band and backup singers. But he also makes you feel he’s singing right to you.

Anyway, no excuses are needed for Kris. He is who he is, and me likee.

And sexiness, as well know, is in the eye of the beholder. I find the boyish cutie pies a lot more attractive than the guyliner guys with the smoke bombs, but that’s just me….. :cool1_tb:

He was truly amazing, mad props to him for writing such cogent and evocative reviews on the fly. And nary a typo or grammatical error!

The reviewers don’t speak for everyone, they speak for themselves and they were THERE to actually experience the concert, which is more than I can say for some. BTW, I’d say Adam’s always seemed more like a ringmaster to me, rather than the clown. Although, according to Nancy O’Dell, his shoe shize may fit in the category of “clown size”. Oh well, different strokes. It sounds like all of the idols did fantastic and I’m glad they were all treated well by the crowd from what I read.

If this was a contest on smokin hot photos, Adam wins hands down.

Yep same here! I’ll take sweet and low key any day of the week.

What does it matter what anyone else says….if I LIKE SOMETHING that is all the matters. I don’t need validation from a hundred other sources. If we all liked the same thing, the world might as well just be colored black and white instead of all the wonderful colors and shades we get to enjoy.

The important thing, to me, is that, as far as I can gather, the Idols really enjoyed themselves and that they had fun on stage, probably for the first time. They got to feel like “real entertainers” which they are and they got instant feedback from the myriad of fans. Congrats on opening night, Idols, and you all sounded really nice even through a crappy cell phone.

From what I heard, the crowd sounded plenty loud and extremely responsive for Kris. They seemed to love him. I don’t know what the USA Today guy was talking about. Maybe he has an agenda?

But anyway, Kris isn’t doing a rock show. The songs, like Ain’t No Sunshine, are songs you stay still and listen to. You can’t measure on a decibel meter chills a singer gives you, or the rapt attention an audience gives a singer. Or the way a singer draws you in and makes you feel he’s singing only to you. I’m glad I “get” him. It’s been a privelege to get to know him and his talent.

He was referring to the set design – the show producer talked about it as well in his LA Times interview today. He said Adam’s was big and explosive and Kris was more subtle (I’m paraphrasing of course)

LOL — I guess we’ve come a long way, because my old dad would have said no guy who goes for other guys and wears makeup could possibly be a “real man”! It’s good to get those barriers knocked down. And though my gaydar always goes off loud and clear when Adam is performing, I do think it’s neat that he has a very androgynous appeal.

Meanwhile, let’s set the record straight here. Mr Rushfield DID say Kris turned the place into a small club atmosphere. And that ain’t so easy.

In any event, I went to the AI show last year and this one sounds waaaaaay better. Last year there were four good performers IMO, and here it sounds like there were 10 (maybe 9, I didn’t read about whether Megan sounded good….)

MY only complaint about the whole show and the only part that put a damper on the proceedings was Danny’s little Sunday sermon. Oh well, you can take the preacher out of the church, but you can’t take the church out of the preacher. It wasn’t cool, or inspiring…it was nauseating and a mood killer. Way to go, Danny!

It’s not just the critics who love Adam, apparently the audience did too. I’m sure in different venues, the audience will love Kris more than Adam. I’m getting excited to see Adam just from the comments. For sure when Adam has his own concerts, we’ll need earplugs because the whole audience will be his fans. Can you imagine the noise level?

I want to see Adam’s cool dance moves in the Bowie Medley. Somebody better have you tubed it or Im going to smack a bitch.

Loving the Kradam pics! I’ve seen at least 4 … all awesome! The great thing about living in S. Cal is that if I wanted to, I could take in both LA shows and the SD show. I’m soooo tempted! I’ve officially lost it.

I’ll be honest, I was personally worried about the “tank top.” I was worried it might be a little too much like “YouTube Adam,” which, let’s face it, isn’t “commercial/rock star Adam” (which I prefer). But the tank he chose looked awesome on him. He rocked it for the second half of the Bowie medley. It sounds like it was appropriate to what he was doing onstage, and I don’t know if you can fully appreciate Adam unless you can see him doing his thang.

“I never liked the circus or their clowns”….Neither do I Nola, LOL! Ultimately it doesn’t matter what the reviewers say, it is whether or not the buying public follows their careers once the AI tour is over and supports their music. They have to be able to sell records and fill concert halls to have any longevity beyond this tour. I know I am stating the obvious, but only time will tell, and right now is far too soon to know if any of them has staying power.

You could always tell Adam’s voice was gonna be GREAT in a big arena. The finale performances with KISS and Queen showed that to be true; tonight he filled the arena with his voice alone. I had chills listening to a cellcast from across the country over the internet. Imagine the effect on the audience there! I can NOT WAIT till I see the tour in August, and I’ve never even considered attending an AI concert before this year.

Adam has a fat gut. Even in Gay culture Adam is not desirable. True.

I listened to the top 4 on the cellcert…well, I listened to most of Kris. The sound was AWFUL. The only song out of all that that I could hear even halfway decently was PYT. I won’t be listening to a cellcert again, I don’t think.

I read the USA Today blog and it sounds like the idols received applause pretty much in accordance to their respective finishes, with maybe the exception of Adam and Kris.

I’m not a Kris fan, but unlike Allison, Danny, and Adam, his set did not start out with a really fast driving or real rock song. Heartless starts with a very mellow vibe. I think it’s like comparing apples to oranges. Kris’s set is much more mellow than Adam’s set….people react differently to mellow songs.

Again, I prefer Adam to Kris, personally, but I don’t the the clap-o-meter says much.

So I know that during the group performance, I am going to be taking a ton of pictures of Kradam- must document their every move. haha

i think they all sounded great. and kris and adam are both fantastic and totally different, and i LOVE that about them. i needed something soothing to calm me down after adam’s set. kris gives me chills and adam gives me gasms. and i really CANNOT believe i do not have tickets to this concert. i gotta find a way to get there.

Let’s remember, though, for all these kids — you can be a wonderful artist and not a huge commercial success. I wish them all the best, and think Kris and Adam at least have a great shot at recording big hits. But some of my favorite singers/songwriters don’t rack up huge sales — and in the arts, it was ever thus. If you move people with your music, you’re doing something great no matter who many widgets you sell….

Brian Mansfield based a lot of his blog on the response of the crowd. IDK how significant this is, but according to the geopredictions on DI, Adam got the most votes in both Oregon and Washington’ ¦.

To be fair to Brian Mansfield, he reported on the crowd response and also reported about his opinion of the performances and the crowd report. Here’s an example from his review of Matt’s performance:

As he introduces Georgia on My Mind, he talks about how, not so long ago, he was singing just that kind of song in hotel lounges. And his performance has just a little too much of the hotel lounge left in it. The crowd loves it, but they’re responding more to the song (and memories of Ray Charles’ rendition of it) than they are to Matt’s performance.

It’s hard to know how accurate his opinion is unless you were at the show and didn’t have a fav. I am not sure I could be unbiased about Danny or Adam since I have strong opinions about both of them.

Kris actually respects Adam, MEANWHILE ADAM LUSTS AFTER KRIS.

I love Adam. And Allison. And Kris. I think they are all amazing at what they do, and they all sounded incredible, even through a crappy cellcast, and the crowd in Portland seemed to love them, as did the reviewers.

It’s an exciting season when not only my favorite (Adam) but also my second and third faves get record contracts at the end!

Adam is fine the way he is. There are some photos of him in his earlier years(after high school) where he was real skinny ( there are reports he had an eating disorder?) Adam is not real skinny, but he aint fat either. Hes just right.

Wondering 1) Do they tweak the show in big or little ways as they go on? Like rearranging songs in their sets, as some said Matt should rearrange his. It sounds like a great show, but I’m not going to get to see it until September, which leads me to my next question,

2) Overall, does it “improve” as they go on, or do they sound more tired towards the end? I would think that those who are used to singing on a regular basis would know how to take care of their voices on such a grueling schedule.

Yes, they tweek the show if needs be. I think that some song order may end up changing if the singer and director really feel that the current order has an adverse affect on crowd response.

And…the Idols usually get much better as the tour rolls along. They become more comfortable, their voices actually tend to become stronger, they have better stage presence and their nerves tend to dissipate.

It sounds like everyone did really well, I’m so glad. I thought that Adam looked gorgeous in the photos I saw, and if he sounded that good on that awful cellcast (Rickey was a hoot though), it must have been amazing in person.

Concert… Awesome from what I could hear. Adam smokin hot. Kris adorable. Allison smokin hot. Danny has a great voice. I can’t wait to get something that I can hear without killing my ears. (sorry to cellcast– that was brutal).

It made me really happy that Brian Mansfield loved Adam so much–during the show he seemed to like Adam the most, but he wasn’t a head-over-heels-can’t-be-remotely-objective fan, and he criticized Adam when he felt he deserved it, so his praise tonight really meant something.

And it sounds like he thought that Allison was amazing and Kris was excellent, so good news all around. :)

This is my first year, but it seems like the reactions from some of the bloggers (such as Rushfield) are that this is the most exciting, current concert ever produced by AI. I seriously can barely contain my excitement until I actually see the show.

And, sniff, I am now wondering if I will ever get to see a dancing PopTart. Boohoo!

I will live vicariously through YouTube. I’m really intrigued to see videos, it is sounding like this was a great show which is awesome. It’s definitely an eclectic group!

I’m super excited to see the concert now that I’ve seen the pictures and read a couple of opinions. I tuned in for the first minute of Sarver’s set, but decided that I wanted to be “surprised” by how the rest of the Idols sound. I can’t wait for Adam, Kris, Danny (except for the preaching :/), Allison, and Anoop. It appears that everyone did a great job. Oh, and in the pictures both Adam AND Kris look pretty darn amazing. :wub_tb:

Josie, y’know, it really does feel good. I’ve been reading here so much, that I had this very nervous feeling in my gut that Danny would be pelted with tomatoes and booed off the stage….lol. I mean, on one level, I knew that pretty much everyone I’ve come in contact with around my parts liked him, but reading online did have me worried.

That quote above from the idoltourbenches is good. She/He really didn’t like Danny, but commented on the love he got from the crowd….so you know it’s real. I’m happy for Danny because I know that he knew about the online hate.

Regarding Danny’s speech or preaching, don’t we have a “preachy” idol every year during the concert? Last year Syesha was like that, and season 5 it was Mandisa. I didn’t go to the concert for season 6, so I can’t say, although I could see Melinda filling the role.

Kris’s shirt looks like tape and patches in the close up picture. It kinda makes him look like a shirtless military man with only patches covering up his wounds but still going out to sing to a crowd. It’s kinda cool, actually.

I really can’t wait until I go on Friday.

I was surprised how smoothly the concert went along…it didn’t seem like 3 hours. The Idols must be exhausted now…all that nervous anticipation, then actually getting out on stage. It’s a good thing they have tomorrow off.

That speaks to his talent, and one of his biggest strengths during the season, he has the ability to make an emotional connection with the audience. That little fact makes Brian’s original review seem even stupider.

Anoop looked hot in that photo. He looks good in white. Many people don’t look good in white, but Anoop pulled it off.

Confession – I haven’t read the thread – I just got home from the Portland show so I’m giving you my raw impressions.

I literally decided at 7pm tonight to go to the show. I left my house at 7:15, was parked and in the stadium by 7:40 and seated in time to see Lil, Anoop, and Matt. They were all awesome. Anoop could be a real hottie if he would grow his hair long. Matt really rocked out on the piano. Lil looked beautiful and sounded great.

At the box office I accidentally asked for Adam Lambert tickets and the girl in the booth cracked up laughing.

On the way in, I stopped for a glass of wine, and I asked the woman next to me who was singing – she said “that scott guy – the adam show doesn’t start for another hour or so”.

I was seated pretty close to the stage, but on the side, about 20 rows up.

Allison blew the roof off the place. She was so freaking awesome. I love her.

Gokey was ok for the first couple of songs – he did a good job with PYT, but then he got boring.

Then it was Adam. The stadium went insane. Insane!! He’s so electrifying in person. WLL, followed by Starlight, which was incredibly beautiful – he stayed still for the performane, then Mad World, then Slow Ride, and finally he took off the jacket and it was just him and his biceps and his gyrating and Bowie, and I totally died and went to heaven. Gahhh

Kris was good, Heartless, and Hey Jude were very good, but goodness the energy drained out of there when Adam left the stage. He and Kris came up through the riser for Don’t Stop Believin, and Adam had lots of shiny glittery stuff on his vest and boots and jeans, but the real show was over when his solo was done.

Great crowd, great show, Adam was clearly the star (sorry kris). The acoustics weren’t that great, it was less about Adam the singer, than Adam the hot sexy performer.

Crappy cellcast quality and all, I was pleasantly surprised that it seemed that some people sounded MUCH better than I was expecting. Sarver, Megan, Lil, Scott and Matt, I’m looking at you.

And it just zipped along! I was really surprised at how quickly the show went and how they just cranked it from one person to the next. I don’t know if this is how they do normal AI concerts, but it is different from regular concerts I’ve been to.

The only down spots I heard were Matt’s last number, I think he should move it to the middle. And parts of Gokey’s set, and I facepalmed when he started talking about his dead wife and sermonizing. Oy vey. DNW. Allison, Adam and Kris all sounded great despite the poor audio quality. Though I will say honestly, it was a bit of a letdown after Adam’s set and Kris’s great Heartless, to hear that Natural Disasters song. Can Kris ditch it? I’ve heard David Cook stopped singing his crappy coronation song at some point, is this true? If so, please let Kris be able to do this.

Oh My Ra, I was at the show tonight . I am literally gob-smacked by how insanely good (and gorgeous) Adam-freaking-rockstar-Lambert was.

It was just the scenario I had expected, a bunch of somewhat talented kareoke singers did their things, then Adam comes on and blows the roof off the place. WLL and MW were awesome, Slow Ride w/Allison was fantastic, but holy flipping crap was the Bowie Medley good!!! The sexy, sexy dancing! He took off his jacket! The mod updated version of Let’s Dance! Oh, the crowd to me, anyway, seemed to be very much pro-Adam. He got the more and louder screams whenever his picture was shown on the jumbotron, and when he actually appearded in the flesh, the place went nuts.

And Adam fantard that I am, was he attacked by a bedazzler before the show? Can I hope that being the clotheshorse that he is, that Adam ditches his last outfit by his next show? And possibly burns it after that. Though it at least it was a flattering fit. That’s the only nice thing I can say about that outfit. Oh and possibly it was easy to spot from far off, so nice of him to think of people with cheap seats? okay, that really is the last nice thing I can say about that outfit.

I’ve been on the fence about if I want to see this show when it comes to Indiana…but my god, I will pay just about anything to see Adam shake it like that! WLL made me have a total fangirly moment behind my computer screen…I’m afraid of my reaction in public forums.

I love Alison, Kris and Adam…….but I have to say that the *hoopla*, *lights* and *fire* for Adam sets Kris up to be anti-climatic….especially ending the show. I thought he gave pretty unequivocally high praise to Adam too, no? He loved Allison (which made me so happy), and I think he was a bit surprised by that since he didn’t love her completely while she was on the show, but seemed to love Adam a lot as well. And his praise to Kris wasn’t unequivocal, but it was probably the highest praise after Adam and Allison.

And Sunn, I have to disagree. :) I was nervous about Starlight because that’s probably my favorite Muse song, and it can be difficult to hear even wonderfully sung new versions of your favorite songs, but I thought it was pretty much perfect–ethereally delicate yet powerful simultaneously.

So glad that Kris, Adam, and Allison did so well.

I think the band needs a little tweaking but not Adam and then it would be absolutely perfect. Adam’s vocals are fabulous on this.

Let me add my thanks to MJ for having a forum like this and thanks to all the video links. !From the parts I’ve seen and heard, many things to look forward to on July 31: Danny and Lil are excellent vocalists with great tone. Anoop is also very powerful. As expected, Allison and Kris sing and perform like pros already!

And Adam, wow, Starlight (and I’m a fan of the original) is gorgeous, though not exactly like Muse. The Bowie medley is one I’ve already rewatched. That dancing….Is it getting warm in here, or is it just me? So mesmerizing on stage, his voice, his moves, his style and good looks. After seeing these clips, no wonder Brian Mansfield gave such high praise and noted, “Adam Lambert finished second? You couldn’t tell it from the crowd…”

I’m a little torn about how much to watch of the vids – I’m not used to knowing this much about a tour before I go, and I kind of like the suspense – hmm, reminds me of the spoiler sites I frequent for some of my other fav shows. I’d almost rather watch everyone but Adam, so as not to ruin that for me.

But more Adam in anticipation of my tour date (which isn’t till August) is always a good thing to tide me over!

Reminds me of watching him perform the song on the Today Show – it was absolutely entrancing, and the audience was really noticeably affected by it. His voice is just so unbelievable on that song, and the song itself is so haunting.

Wow Starlight was fantastic. I already re-watch it several times. WLL and Mad World were great too. I think he needs to work on the Bowie medley tho, especially ‘let’s dance’. I don’t know if it’s because the quality of youtube video, there his sound was a little off bit and not as clear as his previous songs, and the choreography needs polish too.

Even when I think tht Adam put out the best show, Kris’ “Hey Jude” was the one that got me shivering. I didn’t remember that the song was tht good! Who would have thought that that would be the one to get a physical response out of me!

Great crowd, great show, Adam was clearly the star (sorry kris). The acoustics weren’t that great, it was less about Adam the singer, than Adam the hot sexy performer.

This is kind of what I expected. Regardless of who is your fav singer or style (and Adam is certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, to be sure), it’s hard to deny that he has A-MAZING (word of the day ;-) ) charisma and energy on stage. One of the best of all time on idol, imo.

Not to say he’s the end all be all, just that he has a level of OTT showmanship when he gets on that stage.

Well, considering it is (I believe) the first time he’s ever performed the song publicly, and in front of such a huge crowd, I thought his vocal was stunning.

Actually, I wasn’t sure if I should mention this, but to my ears “Mad World” was a little pitchy in spots, which surprised me.

I agree that Mad World sounded pitchy from YouTube (which would be a first because he has nailed all his performances of that song so far) but from the audience reports I read there were some major sound issues going on at the arena so it’s hard to critique.

I LOVED LOVED The Bowie renditions. My favourte Bowie song is Life on Mars and I am thrilled that he was covering that one.

It’s not just the critics who love Adam, apparently the audience did too. I’m sure in different venues, the audience will love Kris more than Adam.

Agreed. I think it depends on what town you’re in, in terms of popularity. The hometown people (Kris in Arkansas, for instance) are gonna get mad love from the crowd, to be sure.

And just a quick note on Adam’s weight – I think it fluctuates a bit, just because of his body type, etc. Certain people are like that. I’ve never thought he looked fat though, and at times he does look ridiculously skinny. He definitely seems to fluctuate within a very short amount of time though. Again, just his body type most likely.

“Actually, it’s not really a review (well, I guess it sorta is, but … ). Tonight, it’s a real-time blog, where I’m typing as fast as my fingers will let and am not really filtering the way I normally would if I could spend thinking about the shape of what I’m writing. It’s pure gut reaction. If I’d pre-written it, I’d have been much nicer to Kris, because he did a fine job with his performances. But, man, that “No Boundaries” song is Kryptonite. I hope nobody holds it against him for having to sing it on tour, and I’d lay down cash money that he wishes he didn’t have to. (On the other hand, I guess having to sing it beats not winning American Idol.) Being able to bring an audience back around after that song the way Kris did is, in its own way, a feat as remarkable as anything Adam did.”

From what I can deduce:

1. A very entertaining show by All the Idols. There didn’t seem to be a mass exodus for the bathroom at any point in the evening. Even Sarver sounded good to my ears.

2. I didn’t hear any boos for Gokey during the loud cheers/screams.

3. Adam puts on a great show. Listening to him and not seeing him doesn’t carry the same punch. He needs to keep the jacket on or do some more sit ups. I don’t think his bod is all that.

4. Kris suffers not jusing coming after Adam but high energy sets from Allison and Danny.

5. Even though most of the commenters here this Adam is IT, all the Idols have their fans and it’s not a One Man show.

Just noticing while watching some of the video that is up – Adam spends a whole lot of time effing around with those ear pieces….

Next up, it’s No Boundaries, but it’s not getting anywhere near the level of reaction that Heartless did. In fact, people are starting to sit down. It’s just inexcusable that the Idol winner has to include a song that elicits that kind of reaction. It’s a set killer. I’d heard the studio version of No Boundaries just enough since the Idol season ended that I’d almost decided it was benign, but Kris has to be royally ticked that he’s been shackled to this ball and chain.

Just read the USA Today review – too bad about NB = I kind of felt the same way about Cook having to sing Time of My Life last year, and that was a MUCH better song than NB.

I remember thinking to myself, after Adam didn’t win, that, well, at least he wouldn’t have to sing NB. At moments like this, that truth becomes all the more apparent.

I definitely don’t think this is true–at least not in the way that I think you mean it. Adam is a very gifted performer and brings more to the table on that front than most artists do–the experience of watching him live is unusually exciting. But his vocals on their own are stunning, and the popularity of his studio version of songs indicates that people love listening to him as much as they love watching him. The performance skills are a terrific bonus–but it’s the voice and interpretive skills that draw people to him most of all. A good parallel would be Bowie: Bowie puts on an amazing show and the experience of actually seeing and hearing him live is like none other (so I’ve heard–I’ve never done it personally)–but his CDs are insanely amazing on their own.

I thought Adam looked and sounded amazing. And I hope he keeps taking off the jacket and rocking the black shirt all the way until August 30th, when I see him in KC!

Would love to see some video of Danny’s My Wish. I listened to Rickey’s cellcast last night and Danny brought down the house with that song. The applause were deafening. I was so happy to hear that ALL of the Idols received lots of love from the crowd last night. Rushfield from LA Times said Danny’s voice could fill three arenas.

Every year, the coronation song is atrocious. I think David Cook did the best with his of anyone. And it was a better song to begin with than NB.

I thought that Matt’s “Hard To Handle” performance was pretty entertaining. He is a very talented pianist. I am looking forward to seeing his performance of “Georgia”, I think that will be a pretty good performance too.

I thought that Anoop did a pretty good job with “Always on My Mind”, and I am glad to see that he was pushing himself more vocally than he did, at different times on the show. If though the cellcast’s sound was pretty crummy, I could hear Anoop better than I could hear some of the other contestants on the cell cast. I think that his version of “Mad” will probably be pretty good too.

I thought that Danny looked and sounded good. He looks like he has lost some weight, and been working out more. He has really nice arms. And his voice sounds good in his “What Hurts The Most” performance. Looking forward to seeing the rest of his performances.

I think Adam is equally brilliant whether you’re watching or just listening. I’ve been listening to his version of Starlight while doing other things and I’m totally mesmerized. And I’ve watched his Bowie medley about 20 times already. That boy does things with his hips that should be illegal….

I’ve listened to without watching starlight for numerous times. Love it. They should put the tour songs in a CD. It will sell.

From the reviews they all did really well, especiallly Adam, Allison and Kris.

Adam is very cool, but his voice overall is too high for my tastes. Kris seemed kind of quiet for that stage, I think he’ll be better in more intimate settings. Allison is the breakout star this season for me. Also, unlike most of the others, she never seems to hit a bad note or a false moment. She has unerring instincts. Whereas from what I saw of Adam’s numbers, they were sometimes hit and miss, and with his many more years of experience, I expected more perfection from him. Allison is amazing to me. She reminds me of Joss Stone, a phenom.

p.s. Danny’s What Hurts the Most sounds so corny to me, but then again I don’t like Rascal Flatts either.

And just a quick note on Adam’s weight – I think it fluctuates a bit, just because of his body type, etc. Certain people are like that. I’ve never thought he looked fat though, and at times he does look ridiculously skinny. He definitely seems to fluctuate within a very short amount of time though. Again, just his body type most likely.

I noticed that, but I think his heavy look in this set is from the clothes worn..because before(during his backstage interview with lil) and after the show(When they came out to meet the fans) he doesnt look anywhere near as heavy as in some of the stage pics.

1. I watched all but one of the clips — in order. (No I am not watching NoBo — no matter how much I like Kris.) I agree with the comment above that it was tough to cool back down to Kris level after Alison – Danny – Adam.

2. I’m pleased that everyone got (and deserved) a really great reception from the audience and that FanWars stayed out of the arena.

3. From everything I have read and heard, Danny got a great audience response, and do not take this as a dis of Danny, BUT the huge applause after Danny’s last performance and the screaming was mostly for Adam. If you read the online comments, or listen to the crowd, you can even hear people screaming “Adam”.

4. The Bowie medly was amazing. Adam’s performance was great and the arrangment of “Let’s Dance” was updated but respectful. Amazing way to end his set. Looks like WLL was also very HOT! I still haven’t seen whole thing.

5. Adam looks great in the black sleeveless T and the jacket was amazing. The outfit he wore at the end was just OK for me.

6. Kris looks great in black shirt at the end. I think he should loose the plaid shirt — I would love to see him in a black sleeveless T — Maybe he could go shopping with Adam!

7. The closing number was a bit cheesey but fun. It must have been amazing to see Kris and Adam rise up on the lift at the end.

i do agree that maybe the shirt wasnt all that flattering at times. i think it is the way that it hangs and clings to him. plus he has a penchant for the tight pants which gives even the skinniest of people a bit of a muffin top. he just needs to work a little on tone, but even if he didnt do a damn thing i think he is smokin hot.

and i totally feel it just by listening to him. starlight has been on repeat for hours now and i can’t get enough. i loved the original, but i LOOOOVE his version.

Yeah, I don’t get the “Adam is fat” comments at all. He is not fat. Camera angles can add pounds. But personally, I don’t think he looks even slightly heavy in any of the videos or photos from last night. And I think he looks borderline too skinny in the video interview with Lil from yesterday. Just read the USA Today review – too bad about NB = I kind of felt the same way about Cook having to sing Time of My Life last year, and that was a MUCH better song than NB.

He isnt fat..he’s gorgeous, but the tank top isnt very flattering from certain angles, but I dont care…….he could be strutting on the stage butt nekkid and I’d still think he’s awesome!

So what’s the next stop? I give myself a week at most, maybe 2 or 3 more concerts to follow on youtube and here, and then I’m done with this summer tour…cant watch them do the same songs all summer on youtube clips, I’d run batty!

And you are entitled to your opinion and I don’t feel hurt. I appreciate the fact that Adam’s performance is just not your cup of tea. He will not appeal to everyone. Just as Kris won’t. At least you are giving a critique on his performance not on his look or how he talks. That is what bothers me. To me Adam is an amazing performer and I love his voice, all aspects. (rock, ballad, pop, soul) I like Kris too but his range as a performer is no where near Adam’s. But that does not mean he will not be hugely successful or that Adam will be. Just my taste. There are so many comments on Twitter about Adam’s Starlight performance from people who saw it and say it was “amazing”, “better than Muse” etc. And there are now a couple of good videos without distortion that have surfaced. It seems like the people who recorded it from the close rows got some kind of distortion — in the Seattle Times video, it’s even hard to hear the back-up electronic vocals. Yes, I would buy it if he recorded.

As cheesy as TOML was/is it didn’t really kill DC’s set though, at least not the shows I attended. I have memories of the huge crowd singing along, word for word. I found it hysterical at the time until I realized people LOVE that song :laugh_tb:

i’ll be honest, i do think he has an occasional celine dion-like tendency to move his arms uncontrollably…. but i think rather than being fake or staged it’s just energy that finds it’s way out of his body that way and helps him transition that vocal out. thinking about it, i would think it would be hard to spit out a huge note the way he does remaining perfectly still. but it’s probably because ive watched the videos so many times now, it is hard to imagine it any other way :)

he did give an interview yesterday, though, where he was asked whether he consciously thinks about the little gestures during performances (e.g., he was asked specifically about the little shirt raise during ROF) and he said he doesnt pre-plan it. (and the shirt raise was an accident – his finger got stuck on his shirt hehe). i think he just gets in the zone. a crazy writhing, arm flailing, sexy zone!

AS far as him being staged and choreographed, I enjoy that. I don’t think it’s inorganic, that’s how Adam has performed forever. It’s who he is. Growing up in the musical theater community, interacting with his circle of friends and his innate sense of the dramatic come out in his performances. I don’t think he’s putting on a persona, his early youtube performances show that level of perfectionism and planning. Like Simon says, “it’s like asking a cow not to moo.” I think that’s who Adam is. I’m glad he makes the effort to try to perfect his performance, I think it shows a great deal of respect to the audience that he works so hard to prepare for his performances. I’ve always been the type of person that wants to attend a concert to stimulate both my audio and visual senses. If I wanted to hear the song sung straight, I might as well listen to my IPOD and avoid the crowds. I want an experience. I’ll get that with Adam on the 20th of this month for sure.

I’m looking forward to the experience of seeing and hearing all the idols, especially Adam, Kris and Allison. All different, all great.

Whyso, I am a huge Kradison fan, but have to say that Adam is by far my fav Idol of all time. BUT I, for one, never have any issue with people not liking Adam, his music or his performances — and I didn’t think what you wrote was hurtful, just your honest opinion.

But I disagree with you on one point: I do not think this is an unusually “Adam heavy” website. For better or worse, this website is representative of the online world. Adam just has a lot of passionate fans online — and based on last night’s concert reception in Portland. And although Kris won the AI vote, I think that Adam and Danny both have at least as many passionate fans as Kris — maybe more.

Regarding Adam, almost all reviews are positive. Now certain fans like us who come to sites to post our opinions are going to lift up our favorites and put down the others, but as far as entertainment/music/idol critiques, Adam is right up there with the rest of them. Plus, its obvious the crowd enjoyed him so thats what really matters in the end. Its all about getting people interested in buying your fall album!! Its not about whether or not his jacket had too many spikes, or the length of his jeans…..

From the videos I’ve seen. They all did well. It looked like a really good concert with something for everyone. They are definitely having the time of their lives as they should.

TOML definitely didn’t kill David’s set last year, but I remember thinking, aww, too bad we couldn’t have gotten another awesome Cook song (like another from the show, or another original) rather than that. Similar to the feelings with Kris this year – he could have chosen a better song to put in that place, instead of being forced to put that in there. In that respect, Adam got a much better deal in terms of getting to pick 4/5 “new” songs that were NOT NB.

I definitely have no problem with your critique as well. Everyone has their preferences. I’ve always gravitated more toward the edgier, rocker types on Idol (hence the love for Adam) while quiet and unassuming, though plenty artistic in its own right, is just not my thing.

To me, what Adam does is what works for him, in terms of his personality, his influences and loves as an artist – he loves the whole performance, mixing different media, dressing up, focusing on the whole look and feel of the show – and that’s part of the whole act that he comes up with (the dancing, outfits, etc.) This completely works for him and his style. It WOULD NOT work for Kris, or most of the others on the tour. Kris has his own style, and neither is right or wrong, better or worse. Just different.

And re the fat comments (though I should just leave this alone, since I have nothing but love for Adam and his hottness – and I’ve got the pictures to vouch for it :-) ): I agree that the clothes sometimes do it too – and that’s true for ANYONE out there (celebrity, non-celeb, etc.) – Adam loves his outfits, and they are pretty outrageous, but they’re not all going to be the most flattering.

People who are performers always almost choreograph. Michael Jackson did, Beyonce does, Usher, Madonna, etc. Actually… Pretty much every concert is choreographed to a point. Thats why its called a show…….

I enjoy it too, but then I love performers. I love the theatrics, lights, costumers, dancing, dancers, etc of it. For instance, thats what made Michael Jackson so special. He could really put on an entertaining show. I like people who can do that. I see a lot of potential in Adam to be able to put on a good concert, especially since he has a natural flare for theatrics.

Ok, not sure where to ask this, but does anyone know what to do about actually meeting them before or after the show? I know that there were the pre-show pics on the other thread, and they seemed to be signing autographs after the show as well. Any official word on how one goes about getting said autographs? Better to do it before or after the show? Just show up and wait?

As a huge Kris fan, I have huge respect for Adam, but I just don’t “get” him. I do think he is a huge talent, and I wish him well but I just cannot get into his music.

It’s just hard for me to understand why people feel like Kris’s set is such a let-down after Adam. To me, Adam and Kris are such hugely different artists and they are going to have different appeal. Even on the show, Kris always showed a more mellow approach while Adam was very much OTT, so I would expect that in person their performances would be similar to this.

I think Kris’s set actually is a better lead into the finale cheesy number of “Don’t Stop Belivin”. There seems more continuity to having “Hey Jude” performed just before this final number as compared to having Adam’s Bowie medley as the lead in because of the type of songs these both are.

But please, can Kris get rid of the horror of NoBo and put something more fun in there (like SWHFTM or MiM)? It sucks that this song seems to sap some of the life out of the set whereas the other 2 songs would likely be so much better received.

That is actually a tremendous compliment because that is very hard to do in a huge arena and most acts prefer the intimacy of a smaller venue, even acts that usually play large venues, nothing like the electricity and intimacy of a smaller venue

I personally will take the smaller venue over the larger anytime. Massey Hall in Toronto is the best place to see any act IMO, which holds about 2500, 100 times better than Air Canada Centre, which holds 20,000. Plus Massey Hall was built for music not hockey.

Though I don’t really imagine him getting a hard body or anything, just maybe sticking to outfits that suit his soft body better.

I just prefer Kris’ style to Adam. For Adam’s videos I only watched Starlight so far. How did he manage to turn a rock song into a gay club performance I don’t know. It just feels weird. All the self-touching and moaning–a little too self-indulgent.

Can’t wait for the idols to come to my town in a couple of weeks. My eyes will be glued to Adam and that hott blue/black/studded/spiked/tailed leather jacket. So fine. Fits him perfectly. Yeah, I have the same question and reaction too, only insert “Whole Lotta Love” for “bright lights.” Actually, I’d like to see them both! Oh well, a little mystery and desire couldn’t hurt, although it seems to a little, doesn’t it? :-)

Every performer has their own look, their own style, their own way of emoting a song. As many Idols have said…they “black out” when they hit the stage, they become one with the song and they do, basically, what comes natural to them if they are a performer and not a trained robot.

That to me is the difference between musical theater and “concerts”. Even though songs are “blocked” out on stage during a concert the singer still has the freedom to do what works best for them at any given moment. So, I personally like it when you see the person inside of the performer, warts and all. It might not always “appeal” to me or be the way I would have liked it or wanted it but it is how the artist feels and that is what makes it work.

And, comparing the idols one to another seems to me to be kind of pointless. All 10 are who they are, and all 10 will appeal to a different demographic. That is what makes these kinds of concerts so good. The audience get to see what they “like” and also get a chance to see different skills and types of songs. It broadens our horizons and makes us more well rounded…and helps us to choose who we will support once the tour is over. If someone can move us in 10 or 15 minutes, think how great it will be when we get 60 to 90 minutes of them to enjoy!

In no universe, ours or any others is Adam fat. He is very thin and very tall. The fat comments are ridiculous. He wears a size medium shirt and a medium is not tight on him. People need to get a grip. Is this the new way to criticize him?

This is what I have been waiting for. I’m still deciding on whether I want to see the tour when they come to St. Louis. Never seen an Idol tour before (though I do wish I had seen David Cook last year). Adam was easily my favorite of the season. I appreciate a performer who takes everything into account – visual as well as audio. We are in a visual world now.

Yep, Starlight, Mad World, and Bowie medley excellent. But WLL was my favorite of the season and was my deciding factor.

Video not the best on the video, but those vocals! I’m sold. Off to Stub Hub. If I’m going to an Idol show, I want seats close.

Adam fat vs not fat. I’ll go with not fat, though a bit soft. But better than I expected. When I heard he went sleeveless I thought the arms would be softer. Could use some definition, but definitely better than I expected.

Kris bores me. That’s my opinion. His style isn’t something I like. I enjoy entertaining, over-the-top performances like Adam. Kris is an amazing person, a very sweet guy.

The talk about Adam’s weight honestly gets me sad. Adam always worries about his weight, and he is NOT FAT. He’s not the skinniest guy in the world, no, and thank God for that. He’s at a good weight.

Also, Adam was unbelievable last night. Allison was thrilling, Kris was quite good, Matt and Anoop were very good too.

I have to say that they all sounded really good! WTG Idols! It must be great for them all to just get up there and cut loose, doing what they love without the pressure of the judges and winning votes. Well done to ALL of them!

Surprising for me was that, from what I could hear on the cellcast, Megan sounded great.

Lil sounded SO MUCH BETTER than what she did on the show.

Anoop is love. His voice is just so smooth and he has that gorgeous tone that is all his own. Loved AOMM and Mad, both fantastic, and My Prerogative was great, too! Would like to see better pictures of the Nerd Specs (LOVE!) and video of his dorky/hot dance moves for MP.

Matt was fantastic on THH and Georgia. Dude can play the piano. Like, PLAY play the piano. I still don’t love his version of YFM, but his set was a lot of fun to hear.

I am dying to see a vid of the 10-5 finishers medley, mostly because I really want to see Lil and Anoop rap. Holla, bitches!

Allison sounded great and man did she sing her face off on Barracuda. Was really glad she and Adam had a chance to reprise Slow Ride. So good!

Danny still isn’t my favorite, but he sure seemed to bring the house down.

Adam was great. His style of music isn’t my cuppa still, but no denying boy knows how to put on a show, sang and work a stage.

Kris was fantastic. Too bad he’s got that millstone of a song NB tied around his poor neck for the tour. Hey Jude was a great choice as a set closer, and I hate to admit that when the other Idols joined him for the Na-nas, I may have had a tear in my eye.

The closing number was lots of fun and gave everyone a moment to shine one last time on the stage at the end of the show. Being a huge Anoop fan I have to admit that when he and Lil came up from the back singing, I heard his voice before I saw him and DAYAM. Love it.

Well done and good show, Idols!

They must have been just flying all night after the rush of performing their first major venue in front of 13,000 fans. I cannot even imagine how stoked they must all be.

I only watched Starlight so far. How did he manage to turn a rock song into a gay club performance I don’t know. It just feels weird. All the self-touching and moaning’“a little too self-indulgent. Okay, okay, fair enough if folks don’t like his style, but do we need to add the “gay” comment? If someone said Lil sounds “too black” or Scott sounds “too blind” that sure wouldn’t be very PC, imvho. Straight rock stars do the “moaning” and “self-touching” thing, too. Michael Hutchence and Jim Morrison of the Doors come to mind. I find it sexy and so do a lot of fans, your mileage may vary. Obviously, the concert producers must’ve noticed Adam’s popularity for him to get the spotlight in the show, amount of songs, even the business of rising up out of the stage *at the same time* as Kris in the finale. I doubt they said, “Adam’s performance is so gay, so we should give him the same number of songs as Kris and treat him almost like the co-winner.”

Oh, dear God – we’re all a bunch of over-protective worry warts over Adam and the others – this is the last thing we need to think about :wink_wp:

There were a couple comments about the sound system at Portland – I seem to recall it being ok in my venues, but, yeah, I hope that doesn’t mess up the sound of the show.

IIRC the sound usually makes everyone sound much better for the tour (smaller voiced people sound much louder, etc.)

The sound on this video is excellent! One of the best. Being able to see the whole arena and the crowd reaction – priceless!

I finally managed to pull myself away from the Matt Videos and looked at Allison’s…MAN that girl can SANG!! She rocked last night!! Go Allison… I think I may have liked her rock set TONS more than Adams!

For me so far: Matt was the best, than Allison, Anoop, Adam… I still need to watch the rest, but I think Danny’s may be really good as well.

EDIT: Would also like to see more Danny Vids, and Michael and Megan’s sets!!

In my opinion, Kris’s performances paled by comparison to Adam’s, not because of a lesser talent but because of the dynamic nature of Adam’s vocals, stage presence and performance style. If the concert wasn’t based on presenting the acts in elimination order, the producers could schedule the performers differently, with perhaps a better result. But it is was it is, which in my opinion does not work to Kris’s advantage. But I don’t blame the other contestants for that.

Thank you. Adam was a little spec, but his vocals were giant-sized. I’m amazed how he sounds in these youtube clips. Well, many, many people said he sounded even more amazing live than on TV. His vocals alone are a show in itself.

Just out of curiousity, I’m not into the whole twitter thing, but which celebs are trending? I’m assuming Michael Jackson would be one….who else?

Honestly (and of course ymmv) — I think it’s just a matter of energy-level, not a comment on the quality of Kris’s set or Adam’s set. Adam’s tailor-made for spectacle, noise, drama; Kris is like the cream in your coffee that makes it juuuuust right. He’s not going to make as big a splash as Adam is on stage; that’s not a bad thing, it’s just a different thing. I don’t think he would want to do what Adam does; Kris has his own style and does his own thing and seems really comfortable with it.

I don’t know, I’m kind of a hybrid fan I guess. Adam hits me where I live, makes me want to sing and dance and yell. Kris makes me want to kick back and sing along. I love them both, though I’m definitely in the Adam camp most of the time.

That said, I’m also in the camp that really wants a full video of Bright Lights, like, NOW, please!

And I thought Kris knocked Hey Jude out of the park – though was it just me, or did he mix up some of the words? It sounded like he was singing “into your skin” and “under your heart”, but the sound quality wasn’t fab. =) Either way, he nailed the vocals and the energy of the song.

It’s like I’ve been transported back in time to the middle of Season 8. I just keep replaying Adam’s performances on an endless loop. Occasionally, I’ll watch someone else, but then it’s right back to ADAM. I love the Bowie medley. Incredible.

It always worries me a little when I see comments like this. I have visions of people at the fence reaching over his back to check the tags of his shirt. Either that or running off with his laundry.

One of my cousins once saw a woman at the laundrymat that looked very familiar. Finally, she figured out that she was a movie star (I won’t tell you her name) and I guess the lightbulb moment was witnessed by the star because she said “Yes, it’s me”. They got to talking while waiting for their laundry and they got around to discussing why a big movie star wouldn’t just send her laundry out to be done (she was in town filming a movie). Turns out, that over the years, the star has had too much laundry suspciously go missing. She doesn’t mind people pinching the odd shirt or two, but it freaks her out about stealing her underwear. So, she always finds a laundrymat and does that part of her washing herself.

Fans can be whacky.

For my sanity, I’ll just suspect that somebody sent Adam a medium sized shirt and later saw him wearing a shirt like it and assumed it was the shirt that they sent.

In regards to the whole pimp spot/ending spot and Adam – I think on the show we only got to really see Kris end it once (since on Finale performance night, Carrie Underwood ended it). I don’t think the show really allowed us to see how Kris ends things on a consistent basis since he only had that Top 9 week. He may surprise over the summer as he gets more comfortable with being the final persormer of the night

That being said – I still stand by my previous comments that I feel like Kris’s final song of Hey Jude better segways into the group number then Adam’s Bowie medley (as awesome as the videos show it to be). And as the winner Kris deserves to be the final performaer of the night.

MJ – would love to see more videos when you find them since the tour doesn’t get to me til August.

What is with the “AM” intro for Adam? I was watching the youtube video for Whole Lotta Love and saw that on the video intro On the video screen they had a “2″ (I get that), but then they showed AM. What’s with the AM? I’m pretty sure I didn’t miss the “DA” in there, but there was lots of flashing lights so maybe it was there and just not seen in the video?

I have never in my life felt so passionately about a performer, NEVER. And for such an extraordinary talent to surface on a show such as American Idol – who woulda thunk it. :shock_tb: By the utter shock and awe he always provokes in me and from the crowd’s reaction, I have no doubt that Paula Abdul was right. MJ thanks for posting link to high quality Mad World. This is one of the best quality live concert audience videos I’ve ever seen. I keep hoping that someone will post a great quality WLL — because this performance was really hot based on the video that’s out there.

Regarding the concert, everyone did well, but there is just a totally different level of energy when Adam was performing. In some way it doesn’t seem like he’s in the same concert. Even the band seems to be at a different level.

I think Adam pulled off an amazing set and kept the audience with him the whole time. In under 20 minutes, he went from WLL (heavy metal) to Starlight and Mad World (alternative rock) brought the excitment back up with Slow Ride (hard rock) and then closed he set with the updated Bowie medly (dance-electronica). And all of it is unified by his vocal style. This give me more confidence that he can actually do an album that spans several genres.

IMO everyone is being really kind to Kris because he’s so likable and he won Idol. But IMO he was not up to Adam’s level. I have seen most of Kris’ set, still waiting for a full version of “Bright Lights” and any video of “Ain’t No Sunshine”. Overall, I didn’t find anything exciting about Kris’ performance. I thought “Bright Lights” was a real chance for Kris to shine, but the part that is on video is not close to as good as the Matchbox 20 version. Having heard it, I don’t think this was a great song choice for Kris. Like most of Kris’ performances, I just didn’t find this very exciting.

Finally, I thought Alison was great (always love her!!) and parts of Danny’s performance were also really good. I do not like Danny very much and am not a Danny fan BUT he has a really good voice.

I will def buy Adam’s album — I would even pay a premium to get it early. I will listen to Alison on the radio/online and might buy her album if it was really good. I can’t believe that I am writing the next sentence! After seeing the Danny videos, I would seriously think about buying a Danny album.

Kirsten, this person runs one of Adam’s most sane fan boards. I think she has given him a shirt and has probably personally asked him what size would be best. I don’t think she’s one of those wacky ones you are referring to.

I haven’t had time to watch everything yet but it looks like a great show and I have to say that Kris impressed me very much!! He just has “it” when it comes to drawing me in whenever he sings….it’s so natural and just there, he doesn’t have to work to make it happen….very cool!! Adam also did good which was completely expected, he’s already set the bar so high for himself that he just doesn’t wow me, if that makes sense. Oh and as a Daughtry fanatic I just can’t dig Adam’s WLL since I LOVED Chris’ performance of it during the S5 tour, sorry but I’m crazy like that :P It’ll be really cool to see how much better these performances get as the tour goes on….can’t wait!

Maybe they should have planned the concert better and had Adam close the first half (like Blake did in his season). IDK. Kris is low-key. He’s always going to low-key. It’s like Debbie told the Disney commercial, that’s just how Kris is. Not everybody can be bombastic or wants to listen to bombastic performers. Viva la differences!

It was very interesting watching all the Top 13 recently during the MJ show: I was struck by how Adam and Allison both really impressed me the most (Allison is just amazing, regardless of how young she is), so it’s great to hear that she did so well on the show!

I wasn’t as happy with her song choices (LOVE Cry Baby and SR, So What was mainly ruined for me by the AI “all white brigade” performing it in the finale, and Barracuda is not a fav song of mine). Regardless of the songs, though, I think she will be amazing during the tour!

IDK, to me it’s part of the whole Kris style – as has been said here before, it’s just not his thing to play an arena style rock/pop concert. He is much more intimate, that’s his sound and style. So it’s not so much which is better or worse, but just that you are more likely to have a natural energy drop when someone like Adam performs huge rock ballad numbers, followed by Kris strumming away on the guitar.

LOL! I noticed that too! I think it may be the angle of the person taking the vid, versus the way the lights show up on the screen to obscure the AD part of it (just a guess since AM makes no sense = what, is it the morning?)

Yes, I know that. They do that every year. It’s an encore of sorts. Like when they get everybody in the play to come out and take a bow. Not just the people who were left on the stage when it ended. People in general want to be able to appluad everybody, so the final group moment is a way to do that.

When they do the mini-concert set-up, the Idol winner always goes last (before the final group number). Even in season 6 when they had a lot of group numbers, Jordin had a long set at the end.

Blake was immensely popular in his year (and got lots of ear peircing screams). I thought it worked well when he ended the first half so I’m not sure I see the problem. But, then I don’t really have a problem with the concert as it is. It’s just that if people suggest re-shuffling, that’s what I would do.

Multi performer concerts always seem a little disjointed because of the type of singers and their individual song selection. If Kris gets invited to perform at the traveling Christmas concerts he will have the same type of situation that he faces with the AI tour. His style, as many have alluded to, is much more intimate and basically one on one…not OTT arena style. Performers like Jason Mraz, Colby Cailette, James Taylor and many more have survived, handily, and Kris will to.

But, at the same time, Kris’ fans need to realize that there will always be a different “energy” level when he performs. You can’t sing in an intimate more laid back style and expect the audience to get “moved” into the same frenzy they would for someone who is singing accompanied by booms and blasts. Just ain’t going to happen. It doesn’t mean that Kris is weaker than, say Adam, it just means that an audience reacts differently.

Great videos. IMO, Kris has staying power in the industry.

With regards to his shirt size, I think he said it himself in an interview somewhere. He was asked about fan gifts and said that he was getting lots of jewelry and for some reason X-L clothing. He laughed and said that he knew the camera added pounds, but he’s a medium shirt size.

Agreed. We were debating those logistics earlier in the weeks before the tour, and ending in the first half would be incredibly anti-climactic for the rest of the show.

Danny and Matt ran up and down the line slapping hands, laughing like the young people they are, celebrating their public debut. At last, they have emerged from the straight-jacket of television’s most high pressure competition and are free to do what they love ‘“ to sing and to entertain.’ 

I saw the video of Danny and Matt running up and down along the line of people giving high fives. I loved it! I am so happy for all of them….seems they were on top of the world last night!

I was skimming the comments and all I can is WOW! I look at the tour as a time for all of them to have fun and for the fans to relax and just enjoy….kinda like they’re doing. Obviously everyone has their favorites but this tour is pretty meaningless in terms of determining how well their careers will be. I remember back in S4 Constantine and Bo got tons of love from all the fans and the screams were crazy but that didn’t mean much for them. I know Constatine has the whole Tony nomination thing happening now but it took a lot to get there and it’s still not what you would call a successful music career.

I’m just saying that we’ve go a loooooooooong time and lots of happenings before we’ll know who’ll be the success stories of S8.

What’s with the AM? I’m pretty sure I didn’t miss the ‘DA’  in there, but there was lots of flashing lights so maybe it was there and just not seen in the video?

I suspect it’s the economy. Since they used 2 and DA last year, it’s only 2 and AM this year. ;-P

For my sanity, I’ll just suspect that somebody sent Adam a medium sized shirt and later saw him wearing a shirt like it and assumed it was the shirt that they sent.

He said in an interview somewhere that because people know he’s kind of tall they keep sending him XL shirts when in fact he wears medium.

WSOW this is NUTSO, MJ! I just found you last year during S7 and this was kind of an intimate little place…whew! AHHHH ADAM. I do not have tickets to the show this year, but I would love to see Adam. And Matt and Kris. The AI shows I’ve seen, everyone sounded better live than on TV, imo. And boy was S7 an exponentially better show than S2! Of course that was because of my one true love, David Cook. hee. INNYWAY, vids are great, thank you all so much! I would prolly get tix if I didn’t have a broken kneecap and the show wasn’t coming up so soon, dammit. I’m looking forward to albums from Adam and Matt the most, still. That’s how I’ve felt since before the show was over.

I hope to hell that Adam has already had his opportunities to become a drug addict and alcoholic and has passed them up. He’s 27 or 28, right? I hope he knows better by now. He’s worked so hard, since he was a kid, to get this exposure, this chance. Adam, I’m confident you won’t blow it and self-destruct! I can’t wait to see what he does next and hear his album.

It would indeed be a tough act to follow going after Adam but let’s face it, Kris just doesn’t have the energy level that Allison, Danny and Adam bring to a performance.

ITA. Now I understand what Randy and Simon said in Kris’ finale show — the same as one of the reviewers said. Kris is suited to a smaller venue. The bigger ones just swallow him up.

I’m just thrilled that the reviewers are saying Adam is living up to his expectations. I read a bit ago that if Adam can pull off “putting on a show” (he already has the vocals) he can be hugely successful. I know it’s only one show, but he can only get better.

With regards to his shirt size, I think he said it himself in an interview somewhere. He was asked about fan gifts and said that he was getting lots of jewelry and for some reason X-L clothing. He laughed and said that he knew the camera added pounds, but he’s a medium shirt size.

As far as I could tell from the YouTube videos, Kris did a great job closing out the show. The crowd seemed to love him. So although there’s a much more low-key vibe with Kris than there is with Adam, I don’t think that means Kris is at a disadvantage in following Adam. In fact, it is to his credit as a performer that he didn’t lose the crowd after Adam’s set. The crowd was SCREAMING when Kris came on stage — the only down moment seemed to be No Boundaries (no duh), but Bright Lights and Hey Jude got the energy back up.

It would be nice if Kris didn’t have to do No Boundaries — that song does NOT help build any momentum in anyone’s set. If Adam had to sing it, it would be just as much a downer of a moment as it is with Kris. I don’t understand why the producers force the AI winner to sing these crappy coronation songs on tour. As ar as I know, it doesn’t result in a boatload of sales — by the time the tour starts, anyone who wanted to buy the crappy song has pretty much already done so.

I’d love to see a full-length video of Bright Lights — the snippet of YouTube sounds fantastic! And I’d love to see ANS, too.

It’s kinda sad, but I don’t know if I’m looking forward to Adam. David Bowie is overrated, and Starlight is dull to me. The other two performances will be awesome, but we’ve already seen them. He’s also not as much my style as Kris, I don’t like over-the-top rock star type. And my mom’s gonna ruin my Idol concert by comparing him to Kris.

Adam’s intro to WLL= WOW. Loved it and the whole performance. I also loved the Bowie Medley. Im tired of Mad World and Starlight was just aight.

Why wouldn’t Kris close the show? He’s the winner, and his set looks like fun. Both sets seem to represent who they are as artists, and that’s what I like to see. Fanwaring is inevitable, but it gives me a headache. :)

Finally, I thought Alison was great (always love her!!) and parts of Danny’s performance were also really good. I do not like Danny very much and am not a Danny fan BUT he has a really good voice.

I will def buy Adam’s album ‘” I would even pay a premium to get it early. I will listen to Alison on the radio/online and might buy her album if it was really good. I can’t believe that I am writing the next sentence! After seeing the Danny videos, I would seriously think about buying a Danny album.

Q3, I appreciate you keeping an open mind about Danny. I have always been an Adam/Danny fan. For me, Adam was in a league of his own, his superior technical singing ability coupled with his superior stage presence made it hard for the others to compete, imo. However, I have always thought that Danny had a killer voice….his voice is really special.

Personally, I think there is a reason that Danny and Adam were the frontrunners all season long, although I’m very open to an argument for Allison as well. That girl has one special voice on her, too!

It’s great that Adam is a Muse fan (woo hoo) and he did a nice job with the song but IMO Muse’s Starlight is still by far the best -plus they’re a pretty terrific band live, if you have the chance you should go to see them in concert, won’t regret it- on the other hand, Adam’s Mad World was again wonderful, and the Bowie Medley was excellent…
I Loved loved Kris’s set, his storytelling take on Heartless is what makes his version the best, he really wanted to sing Hey Jude and he did a fantastic job, you could see that everybody was having a great time on the stage…
I’m just waiting that during Kris’s World Tour he would make a stop in South America, I need to see him live, I’m so jealous…

But, at the same time, Kris’ fans need to realize that there will always be a different ‘energy’  level when he performs. You can’t sing in an intimate more laid back style and expect the audience to get ‘moved’  into the same frenzy they would for someone who is singing accompanied by booms and blasts. Just ain’t going to happen. It doesn’t mean that Kris is weaker than, say Adam, it just means that an audience reacts differently.

Yes. This is true. Different artists and different songs move audiences in different ways. One is not necessarily better than the other, but one is definately more “noticeable” than the other.

I think that both Kris and Adam have a shot but it won’t be easy for either of them to have staying power. Their first real challenge is to produce a successful album. So we’ll see.

Adam seems pretty well grounded and centered to me. I hope he is successful as a recording artist and concert entertainer, but, even if he doesn’t make it as a recording artist, he will certainly have a successful entertainment career. He could get the lead in a Broadway Show tomorrow if that’s what he wanted — not bad for someone who was in the corrus and an understudy in the touring and Los Angeles casts of the musical Wicked last year.

Performers like Jason Mraz, Colby Cailette, James Taylor and many more have survived, handily, and Kris will to.

I agree that there are many successful performers who are more suited or perfer to play smaller venues. And IMO Kris would be great to see in a smaller venue vs. an arena. Howver, IMO it is going a bit far to compare Kris to James Taylor yet. James Taylor has 6 Grammys, Rock & Roll and Songwriter Hall of Fame, and is #84 Rolling Stone’s list of “The Immortals: 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. And although James Taylor is brilliant in a small theater, he was also great in arena concerts and put together a great touring band in the 1980′s that played arenas — and got great reviews. (I was lucky enough to see him live 3 times including once in a very large venue — all 3 concerts were great!)

Love Kris, but for some reason I just can’t get into “heartless”, I feel detached when I hear it and that’s not my usual reaction to Kris’s performances. I love “Ain’t no Sunshine” that boy puts some feeling into that song..luv it…and don’t pelt me with rocks, I like “No Boundaries”. I think the chorus is catchy, too many words in the other parts, but I like the chorus in both the versions Kris and Adam sing. I haven’t seen the videos yet, trying to abstain until after I see the show live, but it sounds like everyone did great!!!

AS far as him being staged and choreographed, I enjoy that. I don’t think it’s inorganic, that’s how Adam has performed forever. It’s who he is.

People who are performers always almost choreograph. Michael Jackson did, Beyonce does, Usher, Madonna, etc. Actually’ ¦ Pretty much every concert is choreographed to a point. Thats why its called a show’ ¦’ ¦.

I enjoy it too, but then I love performers. I love the theatrics, lights, costumers, dancing, dancers, etc of it. For instance, thats what made Michael Jackson so special. He could really put on an entertaining show. I like people who can do that. I see a lot of potential in Adam to be able to put on a good concert, especially since he has a natural flare for theatrics.

I would love to see Kris in this type of venue. Went last Tuesday to see David Cook in a venue that only had 850 seats and it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. Great acoustically and just felt closer to the performer.

I’ll admit, though, I desperately can’t wait to see Adam in this tour and hopefully in future solo tours, in whatever type of venue he’s in.

Same with Bowie: insane live shows, but it was the music that was important–his showiness and costumes and lights were a part of his music, and they enhanced it.

You can have all the visual/performance craziness, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less about the music. It’s just a different way of expressing and enhancing the music. Bowie’s not a lesser artist than Bob Dylan, and vice versa.

Also: Lower-key artists like Springsteen and Dylan are definitely putting on a show–their sets, their personas, everything, is a show. It’s just a different kind of show. And that kind of variety is good.

I wasn’t MJ’s biggest fan, but to me his performance is original and authentic. Whatever he does, he doesn’t put up an act.

I agree and disagree with this. I agree that Bruce Springsteen continues to sell out concerts because of his music, but its incorrect to say he does not put on a show at his concerts. He doesn’t just stand there and sing……. There may not be dancers but he definitely puts on a show. I’ve been to a Springsteen concert (I love older music/artists even though I’m only 28), so I’m speaking by experience.

Actually, John Mayer does do some pretty good orgasm faces and has been known to touch himself when he’s playing. I also think he’s been known to make out with boys a time or two. However, Kris (as well as Adam), will get respect for more than their outward personas, I think their musical performance speak for themselves. Also, as far as Kris pretending to be gay to get respect, tell me how it’s been nothing but a problem for Adam with getting respect from people and the media for his music. I clearly remember him having to say “I’m also a singer” in an interview to get back on topic.

There are concerts and there are shows and room for both. All depends on your mood.

Some people just want the band and the instruments and the music. Most rock bands keep it pretty simple. Like the David Cook tour.

And very versatile and confident performers can do both – a concert tour here and more showy tour there – for example – see Elton John when he did a tour with just him and his piano. Which was brilliant by the way and we all know EJ had done all different levels of spectacle as well.

pudgey at the beginning of Idol and now he’s turning into one fine-looking man.

I turned one of Adam’s “Starlight” videos into an MP3 this morning and burned it onto a CD for my car. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me. It’s different than the original – he starts in a higher key (and I think he misses a line) but he puts in little flourishes that I love and the vocal is beeaauutiful!!! I’m dying to see it live. Whoever says Adam moans through that song obviously doesn’t know that song. His vocal is gorgeous. Maybe it would help if you closed your eyes?

As for staging…Adam said repeatedly through AI that he plans the song and how he’s going to sing it and then just goes out there and does it. He doesn’t carefully choreograph his performances. He also said that the Beyonce guy gave him a few moves he could improvise during the Bowie medley. That’s not staging, that’s just Adam. Which is why I love him. I have a feeling we’re going to see different stuff from him throughout the concert run.

But don’t forget, Bruce Springsteen developed his shtick over a number of years BEFORE he was selling out stadiums. He was doing the bar/club circuit for several years before that.

Let not forget that the AI kids including Kris have not had as much stage experience as even Adam let alone Bruce Springsteen.

Be fun to be at the first concert and the last concert to see the growth in all the performers.

One last point, I think most performers are more pumped also when performing their own original material and that is the other strength of performers like Bruce Springsteen. But people like Michael Buble can do covers all night and excite a crowd almost as much but I bet he has a special twinkle and energy when he does the song he wrote, even though he wrote it for a woman who is no longer his girlfriend but I digress.

Danny has definitely been working out. He looks really good. I have always thought that he has really nice arms, but now he looks like he lost some weight, and he looks like he’s in better shape.

Danny says he works out, and Anoop does too. They have both Tweeted about that plus, there have been Tweets about them excercising together, like playing basketball and stuff.

Most concerts are staged even up to how long you wait for applause – but between the staging there is improvising and to me Adam did a great job of combining the two.

I never meant to imply that Springsteen is low key, or that he just stands at the microphone. He’s a great performer! But there are no dancers on stage. No backup singers other than the other band members. No special effects.

And the whole performance is built to further the MUSIC, whereas at some concerts, it’s clear that the PERFORMANCE is the goal and the music is secondary.

Radiohead are another band who are known for their live shows, and while it’s not crazy costumes, Thom Yorke is a frontman who goes insane and he loves elaborate lights (I got a migraine seeing them once thanks to this weird strobe effect). Prince puts on quite the show as well. Even in smaller, intimate settings I have seen showmanship that is mainly limited by budget (one of my favorite live performers is Patrick Wolf and has some bizarre costumes and make-up, has crazy dance moves and a theatrical manner, yet plays a ridiculous amount of instruments and has really low-key moments). A lot of low-budget gigs I have been to still use visuals (such as art slideshows) to add a show quality to their concert. The two things aren’t mutually exclusive and putting on a show doesn’t mean the music is secondary. Besides, showmanship just isn’t defined by visuals, but energy and charisma as well, in my opinion.

Anyway, I do think Kris following Adam can be jarring in a concert setting. It’s not even a which style is better, but jarring. I think it’s more so here than, say, a festival or most multi-act tours because the gaps between performers don’t seem to be that big on the AI tour. That’s really nothing to get in a tizzy over.

I still say though it is easier to get pumped over music you wrote and arranged with your band that you chose so too soon to judge on the future stage shows of any of the Idols until the day comes when they have original or new material to work with and complete control of the stage show.

And even big name acts have room to improve and they do apparently- I saw The Killers live during their Sam’s Town tour and we thought great music, no question, but ho hum visually, except for those Colonel Sanders suits on Brandon Flowers, not that most of the crowd seem to mind but I’ve been spoiled, but I hear they have improved vastly. Because unlike Bruce Springsteen who perfected his craft, The Killers basically went from the studio to performing live without building up that stage presence. Of course this is cliche but true, the more a band or artist tours the better they get and even within the same tour, most bands or artists will usually peak a few months or so into the tour, when they work out all the kinks.

Well, Adam has said that he thinks very carefully about what he wants to do with a song, but when he goes out on stage, the way he plays with the melody and the moves he makes–how he actually sings/performs it–is spontaneous. That’s probably one reason why his dress rehearsal clips were often extremely different from the performance videos.

I have to admit that is been a longtime since I’ve watched a Springsteeen concert – but I did catch him at the Superbowl, and well, I guess by the earlier definition offered on this thread, it would have to be a show. The spin on top of the piano, the runs into the crowd, the backbend – awesome for a man in his 50′s – the dancing and leading the audience in the group wave was all designed for show. (not to mention the pyrotechnics which may not have been his doing). Yes, it all advanced the music and drew the audience in, but so does what Adam or performers to his ilk do. All are just different methods used to translate the artist’s song to the audience.

Sorry MJ – obviously have difficulty understanding the rules.
It was just my way of showing how silly the fan war thing is – Kris will never be Adam and Adam will never be Kris. No one will win, everyone’s taste is different.

From what I have seen of Madonna on her documentaries, I think she is too insecure to actually just go out there and sing without having all the costumes and props and dancers. David Bowie said that that is precisely why he invented Ziggy Stardust because he thought he was just not interesting enough as David Jones and only when he got more confidence was he able to go out on stage more as himself until I think on some of his later tours it was just him, in jeans and a t-shirt, well you know Bowie even he makes that look stylish, a band and his music.

I respect Kris, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t look at him critically and realistically. It is not disrespectful to think that Kris is at his best in a intimate TV performance or in a small venue. And, not to make excuses, but I think that they all seemed a bit (or a lot) nervous about the first show.

Kris was great in front of 20,000 in Conway — performing two of the same songs he did last night. In the Conway homecoming performance of “Heartless” and “Ain’t No Sunshine”, Kris had a level of energy and joy that I just don’t see in the AI Tour Concert videos. Kris actually disappointed me a bit — because I thought it would be better than the Conway performances.

I am going to two different concerts – Little Rock and Memphis. My expectations for Kris in Little Rock are very high because it’s basically his hometown and because I expect he will get better as the tour progresses.

Are you sure that he sang “Heartless” during his homecoming? I thought the fact that he was singing “Heartless” on the following Tuesday didn’t leak until a couple of days later (homecoming was on Friday). I’d be kind of shocked AI would let Idols preview their Final 3 performance song during their homecoming. They know youtube vidoes will get out there and spoil any element of surprise.

My 59-year-old co-worker is taking her 80-year-old mother to the concert on Wed. I sent her clips of Adam’s set from last night; she just came to my desk to say “My mother is going to *freak out*!!” I said “Why, because of the songs?” She said “No, because it’s going to be so LOUD!” I told her they should bring earplugs and she said “Yeah maybe. …She is kind of deaf though anyway…”

Q3, I appreciate you keeping an open mind about Danny. I have always been an Adam/Danny fan. For me, Adam was in a league of his own, his superior technical singing ability coupled with his superior stage presence made it hard for the others to compete, imo. However, I have always thought that Danny had a killer voice’ ¦.his voice is really special.

Personally, I think there is a reason that Danny and Adam were the frontrunners all season long, although I’m very open to an argument for Allison as well. That girl has one special voice on her, too!

Wow I’m really impressed with the videos! Thanks a lot. I watched Anoop, Allison, Kris, Adam, and Matt. Kind of wish there was video of Megan (who looked smokin’ hot, wowzers), and Lil. I wasn’t crazy about them on the show, but think they will do better in concert. After seeing these I’m now thinking again about getting tix for the show in Hamilton, Ontario. Would have to bring the boyfriend though!

LOL! When I went last year I was ok with the sound, but the non-AI fan I dragged with me INSISTED that I get her earplugs for the show! She would have gone insane at the level of noise without them :-)

Kirsten, this person runs one of Adam’s most sane fan boards. I think she has given him a shirt and has probably personally asked him what size would be best. I don’t think she’s one of those wacky ones you are referring to.

Thank you PattyH. Yes, I might be wacky but I know Adam wears a medium shirt because he told me. We sent him a size Large which he wore during the show in Detroit and on the group performance of Don’t Stop Believing. It was very big on him. When we saw him in LA he told us he loved that shirt and thats why he wore it but he wears a medium. Go back and look at the clips from that show. It’s also not a shirt he could just run out and replace in a different size even if he had the time to do that!

Wow, that link posted by Spring2009 from the Oregon site reviewing the concert is a stinger! OUCH!

I’m honestly amazed by Adam’s videos (I have work to do but I’ll try to watch the other ones later). He was tamed on idol compared to this. Suddenly makes me remember why he has generated all this fandom around him, no matter how controversial he may be.

I honestly love what Adam brings to the stage. What I wouldn’t give to see this man live….and believe me, I am no fangirl, I’m not even into boys, but I seriously hold a lot of admiration for what he does.

Feeling connected to him is an understatement for me, I feel mesmerized when I watch moments like Starlight or Mad World.

I’d just like to say that that oregonlive.com review was one of the more unprofessional articles I’ve seen in a long time. If that person is a music reviewer by trade, he needs a career change, because he comes of as no more than a bitter fanboy rather than an actual journalist. And before anyone pounces on me, I’d be saying the same thing if he had heaped praise all over Kris and dismissed Adam as “some guy”. Even if you don’t like a person’s music, how about at least criticizing him in a respectful manner? I don’t think that should be so hard to do.

I really hope to see more positive articles about the performances and less of the slamming variety such as the Oregon Live one. If this is how the press is going to portray Kris and keep treating Adam as the “winner”, it’s going to add up.

I’m not invested this year, although I like songs from both Kris and Adam. I was able to catch both of their sets on the cellcert and watched some videos today. They are both great, but there is no denying that Adam puts on more of a show, and this may appeal to AI concert reviewers.

I hope they both do well, but I think Kris will need much more support and really a killer album to overcome just the general negativity that’s going around. This is just my gut feeling. It will be very interesting to see how the concerts progress. I really hope the fanwars don’t get ugly at the concerts.

And there is a place in the industry for both types of tours, but they appeal to different groups of fans, and one is not necessarily better than the other. But they are DIFFERENT and require different strengths from the performers.

And some people can do both and are drawn to music and performances that benefit from both treatments.

Adam, for example, held the stage without props and while barely moving during some of his best performances on Idol — Mad World 1, Tracks of My Tears, A Change is Gonna Come, Ring of Fire. And then bounced all over the stage on others, with pyrotechnics and fog.

I was interested to see that because, in the past, the Idols who have fallen into the “big performer” category, like Bo and Taylor, have pretty much worked the stage like crazy on every song. Fantasia is really the only one I can think of who did a bit of both, and she was more often working the stage than not, I think. Adam pretty much had an equal mix, which probably reflects that his tastes run to both kinds of performance, I guess.

Thanks MJ and everyone who is providing media links. Starting to regret a bit that the show is coming nowhere near me – it appears to be much better than the only other one I saw, which was, imo godawful.

I’ve not had a chance to see it all, but I can sure see what Rushfield is saying: these guys are really using this chance to show what they can do live. Pretty impressive, since none of them had this gig 6 months ago. Props to Idol and the voters for picking people who had it in them. If I did have a chance to go, I’d certainly opt out of the “vote with my bathroom break” game – some of these people were pretty horrible on the show, but live, with song choice freedom and time to both prepare and expound – that’s a whole different ball game and I’d sure not waste my chance to hear the difference. I might not like it, but I don’t mind listening as a critic, either.

I have a very low tolerance for bad video/audio, though, so I really hope that Idol sees fit to do a pro version at some point. But this stuff is good enough to give a taste, kind of like window shopping for wheels.

And just a quick comment on a side conversation (I’ve not yet tackled most of this thread): dramatic staging never has to take away from music. Of course, it can. Just like the lack of staging can take away from the music. But it’s almost always the case that whatever vibe you see, whether flashy or subtle, was planned on some level (though I did see a concert once where there was sleeping bag hung up as a sound thing – pretty sure the artists had no hand in that one).

That reminds me – watching Kris’ excellent Heartless: he stood so very long before starting, seeming to be staring at the top of his guitar. A very unusual and striking pose. I wondered at first if something was wrong, broken string, not feeling well. But then I decided it was probably just part of his staging – especially so since his performance certainly didn’t indicate any problem with him or his guitar. If it wasn’t a problem but just a choice, it was brilliant: a way to project the “simple” vibe, and yet build crowd excitement. That’s clever staging, and pretty well done (cutting out the fleeting “is something wrong” question would make it even stronger, imo)

There will be many many many more like them through the summer……………….I dont mean bashing Kris, but just badly written reviews for local papers all over the country as the summer progresses, some will even diss the entire lot as a group of bad singing karoake singers without even bothering to attend the concert…..goes with the territory

That new video of WLL is really something. The video that was far away was great for the audio but now seeing him up close is, well, incredible. I’m pretty much speechless.

The not-so-little secret about the music/entertainment media is that most of the writers are young, male rock music fans. To them, “pop” is a dirty, dirty word. “R&B”=foreign. And “country” is for red state-inhabitin’, backwoods barbies.

Accordingly, do not expect many favorable reviews if your idol’s name is anything other than Allison, Adam…or (occasionally) Kris.

Gokey was immediately forgotten after Adam Lambert’s explosive opening. The crowd went crazy as he belted out Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love”. A lot of the things that I felt didn’t work in Lambert’s performances on the small screen were the very things that made seeing him live in an arena so fantastic. His opening number was pure electricity and left absolutely no doubt that he’s a rock star. I was really shocked at just how amazing hearing Adam Lambert sing Zeppelin was. He followed with an extremely strong version of Muse’s “Starlight” and then slowed it down with “Mad World”. Although the live version of “Mad World” wasn’t as magical as on the show, it was still fantastic. He pulled the entire audience in with the song and showed how easily he could warp the tempo and tone on stage. Adam called Allison on stage and the two of them did Foghat’s “Slow Ride”. My son turned to me and said, “Isn’t that a song from Guitar Hero?!” (interesting how times have changed). Adam and Allison’s chemistry were fantastic and the song was spot on. Adam finished his set with a medley of David Bowie songs including “Life on Mars”, “Fame” and “Let’s Dance”. It was fun and playful, but I would have enjoyed more big rock like Queen or Kiss. Still, Lambert showed he’s the real deal and his performance was so strong, I’ll definitely make a point to see him when he returns on his own.

As to the bad reviews of any of the idols, just remember, those that can do, those that can’t become critics!

If I may Wrap up a little what it sounds like the show was last night based off of recounts I got from blogs, tweets of people who went, and critics reviews (plus video that I have seen of everyone so far?)

1. Michael Sarver was Bleh. Not bad not Great just the first performer out the gate to warm everyone up (sorry Michael Fans)
2. Megan Joy was typical Megan Joy. She didn’t sound bad, but it was obvious that she is no Amy Winehouse. She LOOKED stunning though…
3. Scott Macintyre was a pleasant surprise. He was actually pretty good and his fans should be happy.
4. Lil Rounds was another pleasant surprise. She got the audience dancing, and was a crowd pleaser. She May not be Alicia Keys, like she was trying to emulate, But she worked it out and did her thang.
5. Anoop Desai was his Charming, smooth self. Delieverd Spectacular vocals on YWAOMM, (I am not hearing much about Mad) and pleased (and surprised) the crowd with Perogative, and those Dance moves lol Geek/Sexy
6. Matt Giraud came out the gate blazing with HTH!! Instantly got the crowd up and on their feet, and performed like we only got a taste of how he could on the show. Georgia was a crowd pleaser (I personally REALLY enjoyed Matt singing this) but YFM somewhat disappointed and Matt left on a note slightly less enthused than when he came out.

Anoop and Matt were the clear stars of the first Half (But I expected no less)

I will not go into the second half, but I will say That I REALLY enjoyed Danny and Allison. And thought that Kris and Adam pleased their Fans.

Adam is sex on legs people!!

I’m assuming you didn’t watch the kid who won’s videos since you don’t know his name. Hee

I started to watch a couple of them (Heartless, Hey Jude) but got bored about halfway thru. I thought the band had a nice groove going on Heartless. Hey Jude was karaoke to me, so I skipped to the end for the pointy poise nananana’s. IMO, the kid would be a nice solid college coffeehouse act, doing OK acoustic folkie Tracy Chapman style covers. He hasn’t knocked me out with any creativity and I can’t stand the way he sings with his mouth closed.

It’s not that he’s bad; it’s just that he’s nothing special. As Simon would say, you can hear that in any folkie acoustic cafe across the country any night of the week. Nobody is going to confuse him with a Ryan Adams or Jeff Tweedy or even a Ray LaMontagne.

But, that’s just me. I set the bar very high. I don’t like a lot of the mellow singers who are popular these days including most everyone people compare the kid who won American Idol to.

Things could get ugly in the bible belt for Adam. If I respond I just say something positive, like how much I enjoyed the performance is question. I don’t insult the reviewer or anything like that. That doesn’t get you anywhere. Kill ‘em with kindness instead.

Kris’ “Heartless” and Allison’s “Cry Baby” are frickin’ awesome! Adam’s “Whole Lotta Love” is good the rest of his songs sound like Broadway. This is the first time I heard Starlight and was not impressed at all.

LOL at Adam fans telling Kris’ fans not to comment negatively on blogs. Hell ya I agree with ya, but you might want to get your brothers and sisters in your fandom to do the same thing! Yeah I know dream on huh?? ;)

I am somewhat sadistically hoping that Adam will be ridiculous by then that the-ones-who-only-love-”godly” will be so appalled and outraged by the fact that a man can flaunt his sexuality without having lightning strike him, that they will fume and maybe pass out.

Or just the fact that a lot of people do not mind his sexuality and actually ADORE him as a singer can exasperate them enough to do the same.

This is nothing compared to a solo tour. Adam and Kris have a total of 6 songs each, counting the finale. If they can limit their talking, they’ll be fine. Also, only one is a kid.

I love Adam and I love Bowie, but that black t-Shirt did nothing for Adam’s figure. He must have put on a little weight during the off time. If I remember correctly, by about the middle of the tour all of the idols show signs of weight loss. Some more than others.

I think the keyword here is one. I can see if the majority of the reviews were negative towards him, But I only seen one.

That’s true….sooner or later there will be negative news about Adam as the tour progresses. Not all are into Adam (as we can see here) and it’s just reality that he (and Kris) cannot please everyone. But usually first impression last. It’s an advantage to have good reviews during the early stages of the tour because whatever negative write-ups that will be printed or said afterwards will just be a shrug on the shoulders. He can’t have it all. And I’m trying my best to keep mj’s advice. If you can’t take it, don’t read it. Unfortunately, there are times I just can’t.

Yay for all the Jayhawks! Okay, after all these videos today I’m really starting to get excited for the concert. Wish it wasn’t so far away. Guess I’ll have to pass the time by watching the WLL video (again) and licking the screen.

I’ve seen Bowie in concert many times — including Fame. I saw the entire first US tour in 1972 and most of the 1976 tour. [I was working, not chasing the band :) ] And I have seen at least one performance on evey US tour since and have see in in the UK several times. I am a long-time Bowie fan — so that may explain my following critique.

I have been waiting for months to her Adam do Bowie. “Life on Mars” was a really cool choice and “Let’s Dance” is Bowie’s biggest hit and a good dance number. But I wish he would have picked “Heros” instead of “Fame”. “Fame” has once really great riff and then … “Heros” is a great anthemic song and it would really suit Adam’s voice.

Perhaps it is the quality of the audio on these concert videos, but I think that Adam’s Bowie medly still needs work. There weren’t smooth transitions, the vocal arrangement is odd in places and Adam still seams to be getting his choreography worked out. I know this medly will get better as he performs it more but IMO it’s not in the same league as WLL and Starlight — both blew me away.

I totally agree. I’ve seen Bowie as well (though not as many times as you!) and I’ve been a huge fan since at least ’74.

I thought Life on Mars was an odd choice because it’s one of the lesser known Bowie songs. I love the song, but it was not a good choice for this medly. I would have loved to hear “Width of a Circle” or anything from Diamond Dogs. Or Alladin Sane, or well, too many more to count.

Honestly, if these people are trying to be professionals — and that’s what they’re trying to do; they’re not a bunch of kids in the third-grade musical — they’d better get used to hearing negative opinions. The sooner you learn that any one opinion is just one opinion but that it’s a good idea to consider every opinion carefully before deciding to ignore it, the better off they’ll be. They’ll hear plenty of negative opinions as multiple doors get slammed in their faces. It’s a tough business.

I think Adam is still working on his sets. WLL, Starlight, Mad world and Slow Ride were fantastic. I thought his bowie medley he was unpolished as far as the rest of his performance. Thought at time he lost energy. Loved the first part. Fame ok. Let’s dance, don’t think he has it were he wants it at this point. but he will only get better. Kris sounded good but I think it is better for him to stay at the piano or behind his guitar. He seems too awkward when he moves and takes away form his connection that is his trade mark. Allison honestly great through out her performance. I would get rid of guitar. She is better just let her lose.

I thought Life on Mars was an odd choice because it’s one of the lesser known Bowie songs. I love the song, but it was not a good choice for this medly. I would have loved to hear ‘Width of a Circle’  or anything from Diamond Dogs. Or Alladin Sane, or well, too many more to count.

I think only someone who really knows and love Bowie would be Life on Mars, the choice still impresses me. And I agree 100% — anything from DD.

kris reminds me a bit of chris martin when he rocks out on the piano ‘ ¦.he gets all jittery :)

I just watch Kris’ “Bright Lights”. The video is shot from an angle where the audience is clearly lit. And I can see what Brian Mansfield was describing. Kris is doing a really great performance but the audience is sitting and not really looking like they are into the performance.

If I was putting together this show, I would have put some kind of group number between Adam and Kris. That would give the audience a chance to recover and really give Kris a chance to shine. Perhaps they could have the Bottom 6 come back and do NoBo and let Kris do another song. : ))

At least I’ll get the see Kris close to home with a ton of Kris fans (Little Rock and Memphis) so I know that those shows will be really different.

Nothing new. Adam was just promoting the tour. He talked the usual about his album being rock pop electronic funk and how excited he is. Again squeeing about his jacket. Says he doesnt want to take it off except that it does get hot up on stage. he he. Said nice things about Kris. Surprisingly, no gay talk. Yay. all about the tour and his album.

AAHHHH!!! I HATE that I have to wait till August to see Kris, Matt, Adam, and Allison….

I don’t give a crap about any negative reviews….Or how boring they think Kris may be…I will be at that concert sportin my Kris Allen T-shirt…Probably screaming my ass off…Telling him to unbutton his shirt a little more..lol

Adam May be awesome at performing, But Kris’s voice gets me every time…

Danny’s videos are actually better than I expected. Adam and Kris delivered as expected. Allison, ditto. Anoop, haha, haha. Matt never learns re: Fray. Lil had fun! Scott was doing his thing. Sarver, meh. Megan, caw, caw! Bleh. Top 4 should dump the rest.

Adam’s wardrobe wasn’t what I expected. The anxiously awaited bedazzled jacket was not flattering on him. It looked like it weighed a ton and he could have done without the tails. Just TOO bulky in my opinion. That, coupled with what appeared to be heavy, stiff-looking jeans, made him appear chunky. Would like him to rework the look in a similar jacket w/o tails. The lower riding jeans did make him appear a bit soft and created a donut effect, and having things in his back pocket didn’t help. All in all, he looked too tightly bound by his bulky jacket and heavy-material, stiff-looking jeans. I want to mention again that we’ve been watching a very, very thin man (Michael Jackson) performing all week and so seeing Adam suddenly last night, I thought he looked heavy, but it was probably a mental comparison of body type for no particular reason than over saturation of Jackson coverage. Dunno, but Adam could stand to improve his wardrobe for this tour imo.

I agree that the transition between the three Bowie songs isn’t great .. perhaps it’s something they can work on a bit as the tour progresses.

Personally I’m very happy that he sings Life on Mars as that’s my favourite Bowie track .. I wish he’d sang the full thing. The song had a bit of a resurgence here in the UK a couple of years ago when it was featured in a police drama series set in the 70′s called “Life on Mars”.

I notice that Adam’s phrasing and pronunciation of the lyrics to LOM was very similar to Bowie’s (he sang in a London accent …lol) … Fame had a lot of Bowie in it .. but Let’s Dance was very different to the origional and was more “Adam” .. I wonder if this was deliberate .. like a kind of transition to bring the Bowie style up to date and into the present day and how Adam performs. … or of course it could be pure coincidence .. ha ha
