American Idol 14 – Top 7 Will Perform TWO “American Classics” (VIDEO)

AMERICAN IDOL XIV: TOP 7: L-R: Quentin Alexander, Jax, Nick Fradiani, Tyanna Jones, Rayvon Owen, Clark Beckham, and Joey Cook on AMERICAN IDOL XIV airing Wednesday, April 8 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: Michael Becker / FOX. © FOX BROADCASTING CO. This image is embargoed until 10:00 PM PT.

Next is American Classics week on American Idol. A few weeks ago, the show asked fans to tweet song suggestions for the theme, and I guess there were so many, that the remaining 7 contestants will be performing TWO songs!

Usually at this stage of the game, the singers would still be singing one song, or the episode would be filled out with group songs or solos. I’m not sure how the producers will pack 14 songs, plus eliminations into two hours. The two song format explains why there appear to be no guest performers or mentors scheduled for next week. As far as how the twitter save/elimination will be handled? Maybe the first round of songs will be announced in no particular order, while the second round utilizes the light up chairs. Or maybe, the singers will perform both songs at once. We’ll see!

The finalists talked about their song choices in post-Idol interviews:

Nick: I have one set in stone that I’m going to do that I’m really excited for. It’s going to show off my vocals a lot. It’s kind of like a mid-tempo, slight ballad, but it really fires up at the end. I’m stuck between two uptempo songs.” Nick also tweeted to a fan, “hmmmm well one song is a fast song that I’m turning into a ballad. The other is a song from T.P” (Tom Petty maybe?)

UPDATE: Nick reveals that he’s singing a Billy Joel song.

Beth Stern is Howard Stern’s wife.

Rayvon: Next week we get to do two songs, and it’s classics week. One song is really high energy and really funky. I haven’t done anything that high energy yet. The other is really emotional, really vulnerable, really a good song to connect with people and show some creativity…I’m really hoping to draw people in.”

JAX: They’re definitely iconic songs, by iconic artists–classic songs.
