The Sun: Exclusive interview with Simon Cowell

Dan Wootton is back with another exclusive.

The Sun’s Dan Wootton scored another juicy exclusive. This time it’s an interview with Simon Cowell. Simon opens up about his mother’s final months and her death, Louis Tomlinson’s impending fatherhood, One Direction’s future and Zayn’s move from Syco to another Sony label.

On his mother’s final months:

At times openly crying while backstage at Wembley Arena before filming the latest round of X Factor auditions, he told The Sun on Sunday: “She’d been ill for a very long time. It really happened last year and it was a tough, tough period.

“But I didn’t want to burden anyone else with my problem. That’s why I never talked about it.

“In a way, that was the hardest part because it was always on your mind. But look, I experienced it with my dad and the only thing I can say is that I have incredible memories.”

On Louis Tomlinson’s impending fatherhood:

Simon revealed: “I said to him, ‘You man up. You’re fortunate because you’re in a position to be able to look after the baby and not worry too much about that.’

“But I also told him, ‘I’ve received bad calls in my life but this is not one of them. This is your business but I’m here for you’.”

And Simon rejects suggestions the One Conception, revealed by The Sun in a world exclusive on Wednesday, will tarnish the family friendly image of 1D.

He said: “He didn’t kill anyone. He got someone pregnant. It happens every day all over the world. Again, Louis has got great family around him and, look, it’s a plus, not a negative.”

On One Direction’s future:

But the news has increased speculation about the future of 1D.

Simon confirmed another Sun exclusive that 1D are planning to take a break next year after releasing their fifth album.

He said: “In terms of the band, they’ve got enough hits now they can take some time off and do some other stuff they want to do. Then I hope they’ll have a little bit of time apart and want to get back together again. It’s a fun job, but it’s absolutely their decision.”

On Zayn’s move to another Sony label:

Simon confirmed The Sun’s Bizarre column exclusive on Friday that he had made the decision to axe former band member Zayn Malik from his Syco label.

Explaining the surprise move, he said: “Well, because it was his decision to leave the group and we hadn’t asked him to do it, I felt my main responsibility was to the band. They didn’t ask for it to happen either and I did sign One Direction as a group.

“But luckily within Sony there are a lot of labels who are really good. I had a feeling there was one particular label who would love to have him and they did.

“It enables them to treat him as a priority and us to carry on with what we’re doing with the boys.

“It also means no one has any nerves about whether we’re working harder on them or him.”
