Danny Gokey Acoustic Session – WKLB Country 102.5 (Boston MA, 8/25)

Danny Gokey Grand Ole Opry August 24, 2010

Danny Gokey and members of his band performed an impromptu acoustic concert livestreamed by Boston country radio station WKLB Country 102.5 earlier this week.  Danny had come to Boston to headline an open-air concert at Boston City Hall Plaza, closing out Boston Mayor Menino’s 2010 Concert Series.

When weather-related safety issues required cancellation of the outdoor public event, Danny performed six songs on a WKLB livecast and was interviewed throughout his set.  Among newsworthy items,  Danny shares that he is now house-hunting in Nashville, and relates a childhood anecdote that may be rather disturbing to Smurf fans

Danny also discusses performing Tuesday for the fourth time at the Grand Ole Opry, and being invited to sing two songs that same evening at a special gala event honoring Wynonna Judd. Wynonna was the first secular artist Danny listened to at home as a youth.

There was electricity in the air as Danny Gokey sang to Wy, one of his idols, and a lump in the throats of the audience throughout the evening as we had the honor of celebrating one of Nashville and the world’s most beloved stars, this time not for her one of a kind talent, but for her one of a kind heart, ” said event Chairperson Pamela Davis Needham.”

  1. That was nice that Danny was invited to sing at that Wynonna Judd event. :) I am also glad that he got to make his fourth appearance at the Opry. The acoustic concert in Boston reminds me of the days when he was on his radio tour, particulary of “Tiny Life” and “Life on Ya” two of my favorite songs off his album. I would like to see “Life on Ya” as Danny’s third single.

  2. That was really great of that radio station in Boston to quickly pull together a web concert for Danny. I was glad that I saw it was happening in time to get to see it. Jx223, it also reminded me of his radio tour, it was really nice. Danny is great in the big shows where he can run all over the stage and I know he loves that, but these “just sit and sing” performances are nice sometimes to just really appreciate his voice. He looks really cute in that red shirt too!

I love that he got to sing in tribute to Wynonna, I’ve heard him talk about how much he admires her many times.

I agree Josie. :) Plus I thought he sounded nice with Jamie. Their voices sounded nice together and she’s a cute girl. It’s nice to hear how he sounds when he’s singing with a female vocalist like her. I would like to see the tribute he did to Wynonna too, I want to hear him singing her some of her songs. It was nice that he got invited to sing at that event honoring her.

  4. These are the two Wynonna songs Danny said he performed at her honors event.

No One Else on Earth – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmAMti3NeLY

    Only Love – http://www.cmt.com/videos/wynonna/34848/only-love.jhtml

It would be really fun to hear Danny singing those, especially No One Else on Earth. Maybe he will add it to his concert sets sometime to give us a treat :)

I can definitely believe that listening to Wynonna a lot as a kid was an influence on Danny’s sound. Danny’s sound has more in common to me with Wynonna actually than the male artists like Ronnie Milsap who they compared him to in the Sony press release when Danny was signed.

  5. Well, Danny is certainly looking and sounding mighty fine these days, fit and trim. Glad to see all his hard work has resulted in some great opportunities. Pretty darn good for someone who finished in 3rd place, lol.

I also see nothing but good things for Danny’s keyboard player, Brandon Fraley. The guy is really talented.

Mmmmmm, I have laugh when I look back at all those who were threatened by Danny and insisted he would not last 6 mos in Country music.

  6. I feel very happy and grateful for how things are going for Danny. I thought so highly of Danny and of his talent, but there are so many variables in who does well and who doesn’t, some of them a mystery. But seeing him embraced the way he has been has been a joy. Still lots of room for growth in his career of course but I am so pleased for him. And for myself because I want to hear his music for a long, long time.

  7. Thoroughly enjoyed the audio of Danny singing at the Grand Ole Oprey. He seems pretty comfortable there and as always the boy can sing his face off. He always blows me away how he comes across live.

I too really love watching the growth in his career. But, most of all, I love hearing him sing.

  8. Danny is great in the big shows where he can run all over the stage and I know he loves that, but these “just sit and sing” performances are nice sometimes to just really appreciate his voice.

I love his live concerts because they have so much energy and it’s fun to jump around and sing along, but I agree, sometimes you can appreciate his voice so much more when he just sits and sings. I also appreciate Jamelle’s back up vocals- he sounds good with her.

I almost like that version of Tiny Life more than the one on the album (which is a little more “soft rock”) because it is just so soulful.

It must have been a last minute gig by the radio station; no one knew about it- I missed it. Huge thanks to that Japanese fan site for recording it! I know he is popular in China, but had no idea he had a Japanese fan site, lol.

Not a fan of plaid shirts but I’m also liking the red shirt ;) He tends to wear a lot of black and brown so it is fun to see him branching out :)

  9. I also thought that Danny seemed pretty relaxed for this Opry appearance, where he was a bit tight the first time or two though sounding good.

The Opry has been really nice for Danny so far. They gave him a guest artist page a while ago, aww.

It’s not in the audio posted here, but as Danny was leaving from his performance on Tuesday the Opry announcer made a comment that they would definitely be bringing him back. He has a long ways to go to compete with his label buddy Chris Young though. In Chris’s Opry segment they said Chris had been performing at the Opry for 4 years and was up to 53 appearances or some wow number like that.

I could imagine Danny singing and having fun performing “No One Else on Earth.”

I remember his album was #1 in the Country Blues category over on Amazon Japan’s website. (I think they have now changed the “Country Blues” category to just “Blues” category but still keep post the rankings of Country albums there.)

It’s nice to see the support he gets from his International fans, in addition to his fans in the US. I’ve seen a chinese website for him, this Japanese site, and I’ve seen him mentioned before on a Brazilian site. Plus I’ve seen fans from other countries talk about supporting him.

  11. Nice post, Steph. :)

I sooo want to see some video from the Wynonna tribute… Still hunting for them…

  12. Jx223, I’ve seen quite a bit of talk about a UK site too. They seem pretty active, I saw some discussion about a postcard campaign they were doing to radio stations. I know a bunch of us talk quite a bit to fans from China. I still remember the beautiful video that a group of them sent to Danny on his birthday with photos of them, it was really beautifully done. I hadn’t known about the Japanese fan site either, if any of them are comfortable with English it would be great to talk to them too.

  13. I didn’t know Danny had his own webpage on the Opry site. When did that happen? What a sweet write-up. No wonder they have welcomed him.

I had noticed that the UK fans also do a lot for Danny too. They got his song played over there on at least two radio stations, but possibly 3 or 4 stations. They have been trying to set up an interview with Danny and a large radio station over there, but I don’t think Danny’s management/label has contacted that station yet.

The Chinese fans are pretty nice as well and will record videos of Danny performances and post it for the rest of his fans.

I didn’t know Danny had his own webpage on the Opry site. When did that happen?

I think he’s had that page for at least a couple of months now. I am glad they added a page for him and have been welcoming to him.

  15. I want to say the Opry page for Danny as a guest artist went up in July, or at least after he had performed there three times (January, March, May).

  16. It would be really fun to hear Danny singing those, especially No One Else on Earth. Maybe he will add it to his concert sets sometime to give us a treat

It’s possible Steph, he seems to be really experimenting with covering different Country artists like Rascal Flatts, Travis Tritt, Keith Urban and Bon Jovi (?!).

I really hope something surfaces from that awards event. They had it advertised ahead of time, so I can’t imagine something wouldn’t pop up about it, although who knows if Danny would even be mentioned among the other tribute singers there.

I can only imagine how thrilled Danny was to be asked to perform for this special invite only tribute, since Wynona was a big influence on him.

  17. Great job on this thread Steph,

I totally agree that Danny is definately looking and sounding good these days. I was glad that he was able to do an acoustic set for the Boston radio station since the concert was rained out. They seemed to really like him a lot. He sounds great in those videos. Still waiting for videos to surface of the Wynona Judd event. Any word on his fall tour yet? I know he has spot dates but wondering if there will be a formal announcement of some kind.

  18. Strictly speculating, but would guess they will put out a press release in the next week or two about Danny’s fall tour plan.

I only see ~8 dates that are publicly known on his September schedule so far. Leaves a lot to fill in even if he takes some time off at home, as he said in the Boston interviews for the time around his Madison WI concert.

  19. Great post Steph,

There was some questions the other day when the Auto-tuning scandal hit that maybe AI was adding something to make it’s big voice singers sound more full on the performance night. One needs only listen to Danny sing in this makeshift concert, (that they setup in the hallway to allow him to perform)to know that what you heard was the real thing.

Of the songs that he sang the ones I enjoy most as acoustic versions are Tiny Life and Life On Ya, both of those songs shine with just Danny and minimal orchestration.

On a shallow note: We don’t get to see Matt (guitar player) that often up close but he’s a cutie. :)

  20. This is a tough question: What’s more amazing? Seeing Danny Gokey, and his big, beautiful voice, in a small setting like this Boston radio studio, or up on stage in a full concert? Very different experiences but the same thing results: his fans love it and those new to Danny find out how awesome his voice is, experience the connection he makes with his songs and get drawn in to his performance.

Being there in person is beyond anything that can be captured on video. I think that is why Simon, Paula, Kara and Randy heaped praise on Danny during Idol; week in and week out.

BTW, red and black plaid look very fine on Danny. And I do like that multi-zippered white shirt, too.

And best yet, “I Will Not Say Goodbye” is climbing the country chart!

  21. Danny is a fashion maven and looks good in anything. He does seem to really enjoy clothes, and he wears all of them so well, whether it’s one of his trademark plaid shirts, a jacket, or plain tee shirt and jeans (personally, my favorite look on him).

I really wish I could see Danny in concert again. I saw him in Franklin in April and I will never forget it. He leaves you wanting more, and more and more.

Of all my favorites from any year, Danny has managed to capture and keep my attention over all the others. I was (still am!) a Lee fan (also a Casey fan) but once season 9 was over, my attention has wandered back to Danny. His whole story and persona, and his incredible transformation from the griefstricken boy who auditioned two years ago never ceases to amaze me, and he just keeps getting better. He’s such a huge inspiration and makes it seem like the impossible really is possible. He has one of the strongest and best male voices I’ve ever heard, and his voice is powerful enough to work well with a lot of instruments but can also go soft and tender yet never lose all that emotion he conveys. I alway said, Danny has the voice of a rocker, but definitely has a country soul. Country isn’t about where you’re from–it’s about what’s in your heart, and Danny is country from his head to his toes, and that’s why the country community has embraced him and why he’s become a regular fixture at the Opry.

I’m so happy that IWNSGB is climbing the charts. I think his next single should be Crazy Not To. It’s romantic without being heavy and it’s pop enough to appeal to country and non country fans alike. I could see a song like CNT being a soundtrack for a romantic comedy. Is it just me, or does CNT sound a lot like the 1975 song “Dance With Me” by Orleans? It was a huge hit on mainstream radio back in the day.

  22. On a shallow note: We don’t get to see Matt (guitar player) that often up close but he’s a cutie.

Matt does look like he’s a cutie, and he has good energy with Danny on stage. He looks like he has fun playing for Danny, along with Ivan.

I believe that Brian Mansfield also said that “Crazy Not To” reminds him of “Dance with Me” by Orleans. IMO, Danny sounds like Steve Winwood on that song, I think that the sound and tone of his voice, sounds like Steve. Do you hear that as well?

At the beginning of the song where he sings “Love…I don’t think so”, he reminds me very much of Steve Winwood.

  24. I loved the “impromptu web concert” Danny gave at WKLB in Boston. Luckily I found it right before it began and could watch the entire show. Reminded me of his radio tour days….and again proved to me just how much he has progressed with his powerful voice, energetic performances and total comfort level on stage. Especially liked Jamelle’s voice blending with his. (Wish he could steal her from Carrie U.)!! I firmly believe Danny is on his way up to being a very successful country artist. (And that’s not easy with all the competition out there these days)!! GO Danny!!

  25. Another great post Steph!

So proud of Danny, performing at the Grand Ole Opry and singing a couple of songs for the Wynonna Judd tribute. I was able to watch the web concert too, and was again amazed on how great he sounded live! May I say he looked great in that red plaid shirt?!
    Good job Danny!!!

  26. Wow, I really love that acoustic set at WKLB! Danny’s voice is so powerful, especially on Tiny Life. His Opry performance was excellent (I was there) and it’s great to hear he was invited to sing at the Wynonna Judd tribute. What an honor and seems to have been hush-hush until he spilled it after the fact at the radio interview. Wish we had at least some audio from that one. Danny has come such a long way in a really short time. It’s fun watching his progress. Thanks for the updates Steph!
