Wednesday Ratings: Two Hour American Idol Stays Steady

The ratings are in from TVByTheNumers:

American Idol had a 6.0 adults 18-49 rating and if past history is a guide, will likely be adjusted up a tenth in the final national numbers. That compares to a 6.1 adults 18-49 rating for last Wednesday’s one hour episode.

Fox easily topped the adults 18-49 ratings and total viewership on the night, as NBC’s Wednesday woes continued. NBC was beaten again among adults 18-49 by Univision, and more than doubled by CBS and ABC.

Wow, the 8 o’clock hour of AI doubled the 18-49 rating for Survivor.

    Incredible stats from Fox Research:#FOX beat No. 2 CBS by +107% among Adults 18-49 (6.0 vs. 2.9) & +66% in Total Viewers (18.6m vs. 11.2m) #AmericanIdol #FOX was No. 1 last night in Adults 18-49 (6.0/16), Adults 18-34 (4.2/13), Total Viewers (18.6 million) and all demos #AmericanIdol

This is not very good considering it went two hours (and thus was broadcasted at 9PM when viewership is higher), but considering all the shows/series seem to be hitting series low this week (that’s a recurring trend since Monday) those are ok numbers.

I’m wondering why ratings numbers have decreased all over the board this week.

  • Anonymous

I guess this will be the ratings story for the rest of the season, unless viewers find a favorite contestant to follow…

I think it’s pretty good, not just because the other shows hit series and or season lows last night, but at this point, AI would usually showing small drops in viewership, so holding steady is a good sign.  Now, the show needs to build some real buzz around the contestants, in order to lure in more viewers.  The 7 day DVR numbers were posted last week, and AI managed to go up by a few million, with an interesting cast they could lure some of those people into watching the show live.

Eh, these are fine. I’ll take these numbers no problem. It slayed everything in its path.

Last night was a solid ep IMO, so I expect tonight to hold steady as well.

  • Valentin432

But I consider holding steady with a 2 hour episode (compared to one hour last week) to be a drop (not sure if it’s a 5%, 10 or more), because it was also broadcasted at the 9PM slot  which usually has higher ratings.

If those were the ratings for a one hour 8PM episode considering the overall drop in viewership this week and the way AI slowly decreases every week, then it would be a good to very good performance.

    True Valentin, but don’t forget

    A. the series premiere of Survivor, which could have lowered their first hour
    B. Modern Family, another TV behemoth, which could have lowered their second hour.

It’ll be interesting to see the half hour breakdown.

This is good news considering that it’s staying stable in ratings. Last night was a great episode IMO. It’s been a weird week overall for shows. I don’t know why, but ratings seem to be down across the board.

I see what you are saying. It would be helpful to see the half hour breakdown so we could get a sense of what exactly went on.

I just posted the link to an article from NY Metro mix and USA Today that states that the Voice will air two cycles next year.  It will go up against The X Factor in September and Idol during the winter.  This may be one of the dumbest things that NBC has ever done.

  • Anonymous

Will they be able to sign the current group of judges to two cycles?  Each of them have their own careers + recording.  Maybe they can have two sets of judges.

Oh I hope that’s not true. Please don’t be desperate NBC, you will blow everything. SMH.

It would be helpful to see the half hour breakdown so we could get a sense of what exactly went on.

    Numbers from here –    http://www.tvmediainsights.com/forum/?mingleforumaction=viewtopic&t=1214

    8:00 p.m.  –  16.52 million (#1), A18-49: 5.1/15 (#1)
    8:30 p.m.  –  19.12 million (#1), A18-49: 6.0/16 (#1)
    9:00 p.m. –  18.96 million (#1), A18-49: 6.2/15 (#1)
    9:30 p.m. –  19.91 million (#1), A18-49: 6.2/16 (#1)

It looks like there is a slight drop at 9 pm, so maybe Idol was affected somewhat by Modern Family, although Modern Family might have come off worse  since it had a season low.

Much lower ratings for the first half hour, and interesting to compare with the ratings for Survivor –
    8:00 p.m. – 10.66 million (#2), A18-49: 3.0/ 9 (#2)
     8:30 p.m. – 10.74 million (#2), A18-49: 3.0/ 8 (#2)

    Thanks!!!

So yeah, it looks like it didn’t get the hige uptick at 9pm that was expected. And it started really low in that first half hour! I mean you can’t complain too much about a show that clobbered everything else but still, that is an interesting look at viewership there.

It may be due to the general wonkiness this week. I think we should see what happens next week this time.

  • Kylee

Yeah its weird, all the shows were down last night-this whole week most of the shows were down.

Christina has no career. Adam had a single. CeeLo played w Madonna. Blake is the only one w a career.

They are stupid to do it two times a year. Fox will do everything to kill The Voice with XF and Idol.

Plus The Voice is losing viewers w every airing. Not wise on NBCs part. XF has a loyal audience. Idol has a loyal audience. The Voice doesnt appear to.

I think it is very good considering survivor premiered this week, and I’m sure the two have some overlap.

  • Anonymous

I chuckled when I saw “ceelo played with Madonna”.  Is Madonna the cat?  Was he playing with the cat?  Or Madonna’s cat?

Sorry – had to humor myself.

  • Anonymous

Sorry,I agree with you in  theory but Cee Lo Green was having a pretty successful period in his career when he signed on to do The Voice.

An international #1 hit as part of a duo and another as a solo artist, a string of top 20 (if not top 10) albums, a collaboration with Santanna, Grammy nominations. I get what you are saying, but he did more that “play with Madonna”.

Here are last night’s final adjusted ratings from tvbythenumbers.

Both American Idol and Whitney adjusted up a tenth of a point with adults 18-49 vs. Wednesday’s preliminary ratings, while ABC’s The Middle adjusted down with Rock Center and Happy Endings.

    8:00PM FOX American Idol 6.1 16 18.89

You are right. I like CeeLo. :)

  • http://www.velvetspark.com Jordan Seltzer

    I deserve that one. Lol

  • Allison

I actually watched The Middle and Modern Family and only switched over to Idol at 8:30 and 9:30, which were the higher viewed time periods. Maybe comedy fans did the same?
