Wednesday Ratings: Idol Leads FOX to Win

Ratings from TVByTheNumbers:

American Idol was down 6% vs. last Wednesday to an in-season series low (pending final adjustments) 4.7 adults 18-49 rating, but still easily lead a FOX win for adults 18-49 ratings and total viewership on the night.

Ratings from @FOX_Research:

  • @AmericanIdol was the No. 1 program last night in Adults 18-49 (4.7/13), Adults 25-54 (6.1/15) and Total Viewers (16.5 million)
  • Last night, #FOX won its fourteenth consecutive Wednesday night among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34 and Total Viewers #AmericanIdol #Season11
  • #AmericanIdol beat the No. 2 program, Modern Family, by +18% in Adults 18-49 (4.7/13 vs. 4.0/11) & +63% in Total Viewers (16.5m vs. 10.1m)

NBC – Monday – The Voice (8-10p) 3.7 10 10.028
ABC – Monday – Dancing with the Stars (8-10p) 2.9 7 16.646

Half hour breakdown from Marc Berman

  • 8:00 p.m.  Viewers: 14.64 million (#1), A18-49: 4.2/14 (#1)

American Idol is killing both The Voice and DWTS in the demo, but the latter is still edging out Idol a bit in total viewers. Last week, Idol’s final Wednesday ratings were 5.0/14 16.81. We’ll see how much Idol adjusts upward (it usually does) later today.

After so much trash talk about how the voice and x-factor would surpass Idol in the past one year. This machine is going for season 15.

What?! Where did you hear that? Oh no, now I’ll never get on with my life! And I’m starting college in September; how will I get through the spring semesters?

If a white boy wins this year then Idol will severely decline next year. They need to replace all the judges for next year to keep interest imo.

Tvbythenumbers says it was down vs last week. Thats an every week thing.

Show needs to be retooled for next season.

And you know Jennifer is going to want more money because of Britneys 15 Million XF deal.

  • Valentin432

That’s an every year thing, every season the numbers decline from the top 12/13 show on until it’s close to the end of the competition.

I think it was reported that J-Lo makes $20 million for the 2nd season of Idol. She made $12 million the 1st season. IMO she should make much less. But Steven Tyler supposedly makes $18 million for Idol which is less deserved than J-Lo.

  • Valentin432

I’m not liking those numbers, not because of the overall number (which should be close to last week’s number after the adjustement) but the half hour breakdown show that the broadcast peaked at 8:30PM and lost viewers after that, which normally signals that people weren’t liking the program too much.

No not really, its been fairly steady since the live rounds started. The normal pattern for this show is to start strong at Top 12, have small fluctuations then dip a little until somewhere in the middle, then inch back up as we get closer to the finale. So far live rounds have gone pretty well.

So we need to see how far this adjusts up later, we might end up with a 4.9 which would be pretty good compared with last week.

That said ITA there will be a revamp at the end of the season.

These are good numbers for Idol. In it’s 11th season they are doing well against new talent shows like The Voice & XF. I agree that with all the new talent shows that Idol will need to make some changes next year. Not drastic changes. But I think they need at least 1 new judge (IMO get rid of Steven or Randy first).

I really dont think JLO is coming back next season because she is going on a massive tour this year.

Jimmy Iovine HAS to replace randy jackson next season!

Good for Idol!  Just my opinion, but I like the judging panel with the input of Iovine on result’s night.  That was a good adjustment in the flow of night 2 each week.  All in all, it has all become a nice formula.

Probably just switched to modern family(another highly rated show).

  • Anonymous

I doubt that. People just use that as a scapegoat for the ratings decline excuse.

  • Tess

If people are voting for the white boy why would the show face a major decline next year….the bubblettes who are all about the race and gender factor don’t seem to be a “force” within the viewing community.  Of course Idol will decline next year…it will be 12 years old and the “show” is getting a little tired and worn around the edges….but the winner will have very little to do with the show’s continued success.  A girl winning X-Factor hasn’t made the anticipation for next year any greater, I don’t think.

If Idol is going to get rid of any judges, maybe they should dump them all and start with a clean slate.  Not even one of the current judges is adding anything worthwhile to the show this season, IMO.

Whoa… look at the total viewers for that first half hour compared to the rest of the show. That could hurt Hollie, Colton and Elise the most… all 3 (arguably) had their best performance as their first.

On the other hand, the dip in the demo after the 2nd half hour doesn’t look large at all when you look at the total viewers. It looks more like more 18-49 year olds turned on their TVs at 9pm to other things rather than people turning off Idol.

  • Anonymous

The total viewers for the first half hour could hurt Hollie, Colton, & Elise. But I don’t think it matters as much as you think since they sang 2 songs each. If it does have an effect, it would be on Hollie & Elise more since they have less fanbases than Colton (never been in B3). Unless Colton’s fanbase was complacent last night (I don’t see that happening).

I’ve got the final adjustments but before I post them, I must say wow at that figure at 8pm compared to the rest of the show is really telling!  Yes, those who performed during that time period will obviously be those who will suffer the most vote wise.

Here are the final adjustments from tvbythenumbers.

Law & Order: SVU, American Idol, Survivor: One World, and Modern Family were each adjusted up a tenth while Rock Center, Off Their Rockers, Best Friends Forever were adjusted down a tenth among adults 18-49 versus Wednesday’s preliminary ratings.

    8:00PM FOX American Idol (8-10 PM) 4.8 14 16.890
