Ratings are in from TVByTheNumbers

FOX was the number one network among adults 18-49, while CBS was on top in total viewers.

On CBS, Big Bang Theory was Thursday night’s top program, scoring a 4.6 rating among adults 18-49, up 12% from last week’s 4.1.

On FOX, American Idol earned a 3.9 adults 18-49 rating, down from last week’s 4.0. Touch got a 2.1 in adults 18-49, up 11% from last week’s 1.9.

Idol has a tendency to trend up in the final ratings, so look for the numbers to probably be about even with last week when all is said and done.

Of course nothing is 100% and I will be happy to eat crow if it comes to pass. Lauren has not lit the world on fire and now will be a downward trend in her career. As for Hollie, I wish she would have waited a couple more years, it’s unfortunate that she decided to take her shot now because she has been barely been scraping by and there is no hype surrounding her like Scotty/Adam/Carrie. She will get a record deal because she’s in the top 4 but she could easily be one and done like Lee/Crystal/Alllison.

The Voice is likely going to end up with a WGWG winner (Tony) this season. And last season they had a BGWG winner. So its not like The Voice’s audience is voting for any different type of winner than Idol’s audience has been the past several years. Given that fact, it isn’t that surprisingly that the more established show would get better ratings. I also think viewers might already be tired of The Voice putting the emphasis on the coaches rather than the contestants. I know Idol does this as well, but The Voice is far more blatant about it. That show cares far more about pumping up the coaches’ careers than actually finding a new star artist. Idol, at least to some extent, still cares about finding ca contestant who can become a star in the music business.

Good for Idol.  It’s been a really good season.  DWTS lost me after the first few episodes.

Wait a second? Idol beats 2 popular shows that are going against each other and splitting viewers? You don’t say…

Just go back and look at some of the interviews that were given before The Voice premiered & after the first couple of weeks of shows.  The Voice judges set themselves up for possible failure if they didn’t deliver on what they promised.

I recall Adam Levine making some stupid comment to a contestant about how he could win AI, which prompted a pissed off Randy to slam The Voice, calling it a “gimmicky” contest with “2nd chance artists”. Then there was that Out Magazine interview where Adam Levine discussed his gay brother, and mentioned his disappointment in Idol for making contestants hide their sexuality. Is there more?

I really see nothing wrong with Adam’s Out magazine comment;  it only echoes what nearly every Adam Lambert fan was saying during season 8.  The other comment by Adam was tactless, but Randy  overreacted.  I don’t recall Xtina, Blake, Cee-Lo or any of The Voice producers saying anything about Idol, but it’s possible that I missed those interviews.

I get that people would want the best for their favorite show, but it seems a bit petty to hold an active grudge towards another show, based on a few comments made by one judge. It also taints every single discussion on The Voice, which I have to admit, is a bit of a downer.

Idol goes against popular shows also. Survivor, Modern Family, Criminal Minds, and The Big Bang Theory come to mind.

Most of the casual viewers could care less about the “WGWG” thing, because in their eyes, they are all different(especially Scotty, who wasn’t a soft rocker and didn’t use his guitar to flip a song).

I think American Idol has a lot of all seasons viewers – that is, people who have watched the show since the beginning AND are sticking with it!

Gawd- I see spider webs around the wgwg argument. I admit to liking cute guys playing the guitar. They please my eyes and hormones and they usually come across as genuin in their love for music. This season I find Philip cute. But would I vote for him or listen to or buy his music? Never ever. My vote would go to Joshua bc his voice impresses me the most. Am I the only one who´d not mechanically choose a wgwg as my fav? I doubt it. No, I don´t believe in the wgwg hypothesis bc it underestimates and stereotypes contestants and the voting audience and I find it tiring to see this wgwg label repeatedly being used whenever we want to argue against a contestant who doesn´t appeal to us or when we want to justify votes for the one we want to win. So, my wish for the next season: PLEASE ban guitars so we can put the wgwg assumption to sleep.

By the Lee comment I mean Lee beat out a host of people who could sing better, perform better, had better personalities….. His win certainly wasn’t based on his ability to stay on key….. what could it be? I think it was because of his brooding bad boy personna/looks.

I’m still mystified by Lee’s win, but I don’t think it the key factor was his looks.  I think that, up against Crystal, Lee was less polarizing and more of an “underdog.”  The judges (even Ellen) were selling this growth story with Lee.  I couldn’t really see it myself, but maybe there were people who did.

Despite what you think about Laurens career if you followed it you would not say it is on a downward trend. She is getting a lot of support and praise from  the country music world.  She is on two major tours at the same time Sugarland and Jason Aldean she has just been nominated for breakout artist video of the year on CMT (which is kinda a bid deal). She has several big headlining gigs this summer and several more big festivals that she is a part of in between her touring. Her radio success has been marginal and that is the only place she needs to really get a foothold and hopefully they pick wisely for her next single and she will make some in roads there. She is seventeen and this is a slow but steady climb for her not a slow and steady decline.

I do not follow  Adam  and therefore I do not hear about what he is doing so I might think he has no career but I am sure the people that follow him see how much he is doing and would speak to his success. Only people like Kelly and Carrie are in the news for everyone to see.

Also does one have to be Kelly  or Carrie to be a success can’t you be Kellie Pickler or  David Cook and still be a success?

Different demographics. Why do you think Idol and DWTS aren’t on the same time slot like they used to be?

Lola Sorry to evoke such reactions everyone. I thought I was taking about the perceived WGWG bias that I read about in articles about the show (and here), and hear people talk about. You have all made good points that I am not qualified to debate as the only year I watched in anything but replays here was with David Cook.
(Althiugh I do not think Paul McDonald was ever widely considered attractive)!

For the record the years I watched I had DC, Adam Lambert, Crystal Bowersox, Hayley R. And now Joshua as my favorites although I did like (and cast votes for) Kris Allen, Allison, Casey James, Casey Abrams amd Elise over the years. I have bought or will buy music from all of these folks. (I prefer the archaic CD purchase to downloading music)

Maybe that is the real disconnect between this show . The demographic of the audience who watch the show doesn’t seem to represent the CD purchasing public in many cases these days. But you can surely tell the tastes of the demographic and that is fine. It just seems to take the element or surprise out of the show. Its a vicious circle I guess, the people who like this type of show have a particular taste which doesnt agree with many would be casual viewers or viewers with different tastes, who then tune out leaving the decisions to the type of peole who like this kind of show. Its a natural course I think , but of course this is also just my humble opinion!
