The Voice Will Air Two Annual Cycles of Shows (GULP)

USA Today is reporting that The Voice will come back in the fall and air twice a year:

So is slumping NBC, which with precious few exceptions has been bereft of hits. Aside from Sunday Night Football, The Voice is now the most successful and important show on the network and has surpassed CBS’ once-dominant Monday comedy block in the ratings. Though NBC resisted the temptation last fall, The Voice will sing again come September, airing two annual cycles just as many top reality shows do.

What do you think of that? I dread it personally. And as someone who loves singing competition shows, even I have a limit.

Dancing With The Stars, Survivor and more run two seasons a year successfully. But I think there are just too many similar shows on the air to support all the hours we have coming our way. I think The Voice will be shooting itself in the foot if they overexpose themselves, and of course, the extra hours will help to further erode American Idol’s numbers.

But the big loser, I think, will be Simon Cowell, whose X Factor most closely resembles The Voice. The NBC newbie’s relentless positivity and good-natured chemistry between the judges is bound to resonate more deeply with American audiences. If one of the trio of shows does not survive, I’d say it will be X Factor.

NBC has a history of making really really stupid mistakes. Moving Leno to 10 pm anyone? This is certainly a decision born of desperation. NBCs ratings are so bad, that their sister cable channel, the Spanish language Univsion, often beats them in the demo. Now, that is just sad.
