Jordis Unga was arguably the stand out performance on last night’s The Voice blind auditions, but many viewers probably didn’t realize that her audition wasn’t all that blind. Back in the summer of 2005, Jordis competed on Rock Star: INXS for the chance to front the legendary 80s band. She was an early favorite and got all the way to 5th place, which was pretty good, considering a girl didn’t have a chance in hell of winning.

The Voice producer, Mark Burnett also produced the Rockstar series.

Jordis’ gritty soulful vocals earned her many fans, including myself.   She was absolutely my favorite up until her elimination (I switched my allegiance to runner-up Marty Casey. J.D Fortune won the prize) and I expect she’ll do well on her second go, if her powerful audition is any indication.

Jordis Unga – Maybe I’m Amazed – The Voice 2012… by IdolxMuzic

Back in the day, 23 year old Jordis favored dreads and a hippy look, a departure from the sleeker look she’s sporting nearly 7 years later.

Check out some of her best Rockstar performances below

Bowie – The Man Who Saved The World

This is the one she’s remembered by, in week 4

Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana

This one too, from week 1.

Knockin On Heavens Door – Bob Dylan

A personal favorite from Week 6

I knew that I knew her from somewhere!

Love Knocking.  Love this too:  Imagine — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mn8DRvYdsow

I liked her then and like her now, but her runs need cleaning up. She gets pitchy when she tries to navigate a lot of notes at once.

  • Valentin432

Last night, she looked so … shy?  She would have been eaten alive if she looked like that on Rockstar.
I’m guessing the past few years haven’t been very good for her, trying to make it as a recording artist in LA can be rough.

My favorite of hers is the Nirvana cover but the very first performance of Baba O’Riley was the most memorable because it was the first ever of the show and it was pretty clear it had nothing to do with AI.

Love her and hope she wins the whole thing!

Lots of talent on the Rockstar series. My favorite was Magni from Rockstar Supernova

Loved Jordis on Rock Star. She’s my fave to win it all this season.

Aaahhh… Rock Star! Best talent show ever. Anyone here remember Marty? Best Rock Star contestant IMO. Wonder what happened to him…

Joanna Pacitti wasn’t allowed to continue on idol because of her relationship with the producers, The Voice should have the same type of rule for contestants from RockStar. How cheesy of Mark Burnett to just be raiding the cabinets of his old show.

  • Miss Chaos

I loved her on RockStar, my favorite show ever!  I loved JD Fortune, and Ryan Star that toured with David Cook.  I love Ryan, he wrote cool songs, they never got played except for concerts he does and did, the old ones OMG!  Anyhow Jordis is great, my only critisim of her is that darn red lipstick.  I hope she tunes it down, and isnt so nervous, I think she will go far.  There is some good talent this year, IMO!

Thanks so much for all those videos!
I LOVE her. She is my favorite. For some reason she reminds me of Kelly Clarkson, obviously not in style but in her charm and powerful voice.
Hope she does really well and even wins for Team Blake.

“audition wasn’t all that blind”. So you are telling us that at least one judge knew her before the audition?
About the producers I can imagine both situations: she was invited and she auditioned. What I can’t figure out is what’s wrong.

At the end of the day you’ll know someone. You can’t just don’t know anyone.

If u told me that she is dating Mark Burnett, then it would have been different.

  • GeauxSaints

Hmmm…dunno, I think I love Jordis because she is NOT perfect. A perfect voice is boring for me.  I love watching someone ‘rock it out’ which is why I loved RockStar INXS.  I want to watch a harder edge, not a studio cut.

  • Ringo

A lot of these vocal contest contestants have contested before.  ;)  Wasn’t David Archuleta on Star Search?  Jessica Sanchez on AGT?  Frenchie D. on Idol.  One of the others on the Voice an Idol contestant?  Lots of repeaters on AI — like Bailey Brown.  Putting aside the “already signed and lost record deal” performers.

If you have real vocal talent, there is a chance you have some experience and success.  Plus, The Voice is not out to discovery the next Scotty or Beebs.  They are after the best voice, regardless of age and experience.  Doesn’t bother me much at all.

What? There are lots of contestants this season who don’t have connections to the show, and certainly lots that weren’t previously employed by Mark Burnett.

  • OffLeash

The Voice has been pretty upfront about recruiting contestants, and the mantra of the show is more about “second chances” than about discovering some unknown talent singing in the shower. It doesn’t bother me at all, and that’s also part of the show’s attraction, to me anyway.

  • Anonymous

There is a difference between giving someone a second chance, and putting someone on the show that the executive producer of the show has a past working relationship with. The later feels like blatant rigging, and frankly not very fair to the other contestants.

  • Anonymous

There was an Idol contestant who was DISQUALIFIED when TPTB found out that she knew one of the peeps from 19 casually. There was a pretty big to do when it was learned that Jordin Sparks competed on American Jr.s, but the difference was that she didn’t get very far. It may not be a very big deal in the end, but I think it’s something the producers should be up front about.

What’s notable about this situation is that Jordis went VERY DEEP in a competition that Voice head honcho with. So, those comparisons to David Archuleta, Frenchie D are moot. I don’t mention it because Jordis has competed before, but because the two shows she competed on are/were run by the same man.

Jessica Sanchez is somewhat comparable, because AGT and Idol share a producer. Nigel and Simon Fuller have nothing to do with AGT, but Ken Warwick and Cecil-Frot Coutaz are involved in both productions.

I don’t care who she knows.  Three of those judges didn’t turn around because Mark Burnett told them to or we’d be seeing Adam getting fired today.

Mark Burnett didn’t get her picked and he isn’t going to be getting me to vote for her.  Or anyone else for that matter.  She’s going to win or lose on her own.

This is a second chance show.  It’s no secret that many of the contestants have been chosen by the show.  Further, unless Mark Burnett’s been paying Jordis a salary for the past 7 years, at worst she’s an ex-contestant not ex-employee.  Who cares.

  • fuzzywuzzy

This was the first time that I had seen Jordis, and tbh, I really didn’t think that her audition was very good.

  • Valentin432

I’m guessing here but I’ll say Jordis (and Lukas) probably got more support from the band (the head of the house band is also the director of the Voice band) than from Burnett.

Those guys hang out a lot more during those seasons and probably remained friends or collegues afterwards.

  • Anonymous

It doesn’t bother me that she went far in another competition. No current recording contract is a fair rule to me. Also, some judgment is needed as to if the artist is looking for a second chance or if he/she is just looking for a much bigger exposure. I’m all for additional chances

  • Ringo

If this is bad, imagine the shit fit that would have been thrown if Lukas Rossi (RSS winner, season 2), who purportedly performed for a slot on The Voice last year, would have made the cut!  Still not sure what the problem is unless you think that, somehow, any of these shows is grounded in fairness and an absence of producer manipulation.  (If that were true, the entire season 10 of Idol would be tossed out as it was a country kids set up from the very beginning, in my opinion.)

I think the only relevant question is whether a contestant is entertaining and drives the viewers to view.  At least that’s all I think that is motivating Mark Burnett.  If its down to Pip v. Jordis, give me the latter.

  • Karen C

Joanna Pacitti knowing producers is probably more comparable to this situation, than simply going on another show.  Though i do like Jordis,  and hope she does well.

  • tomr

If this is the best that they can invite, then the winner will follow last year’s into obscurity.  The “scouts” need to be fired.

  • breakdown

The Voice is totally different than the other talent contests, for good or for bad. Angel Taylor and Tony Lucco have pre-show fanbases. Jordis deserves a chance as much as they do.

  • Dlynne

I don’t have a problem with her being on thow, especially because they’ve had other contestants who have auditioned for other shows. It makes no difference to me whether the contestant was cut early or lasted until the finale. That recognition factor, as well as her familiarity with Mark Burnett, is a double-edged sword and doesn’t really give her an unfair advantage. I think it most likely puts her at a disadvantage because some people will hold it against her. She is also 30-years-old now and that will make it harder for her as well.

  • shuey

I loved her back in 2005 & picked JD for the win after i heard him sing california dreaming :) SHE could win the Voice easy if she does the right songs & i think blake was her best pick!!

  • Anonymous

I loved Jordis on Rockstar also, along with JD, Marty Casey, and Suzie McNeil.  Any of them could’ve won and I would’ve been happy.  It’s nice to see that Jordis is still in the game.  I even remember her quirky father from the show.

  • Anonymous

Jordis Unga was my favorite on Rockstar INXS and towards the end it seemed like she really did not want to win/fron their band and sabotaged herself. She never did get a record deal after that show and she kept fronting her father’s band. IMHO, she absolutely deserves to be on THE VOICE as an undiscovered artist, unlike both Dia and Javier who both had record deals. I was also a huge Suzie McNeil fan who had decent success in Canada after the show and Dilana on Season 2.

  • hcpoirot

I dont know why people so critical to some contestants who had previous not successful recording career or gone deep into other singing show etc etc.

The fact is NONE of them make it big. If they had even decent success aka like Clay Aiken, Ruben S or Fantasia, will you think they will try entering other singing competition like X Factor, the Voice etc etc?

Of course they will not. The only reason that all the singers competing here that they had not make it successfully (even a decent one) in music industry.

And knowing Mark Burnett didnot help JOrdis career at all these few years. Mark only invited her. If she didnot get the voice, the judges will also not pick her.

At least she can sing. (Compares to lots of bizarre choices from the judges like the model wannabe singer etc etc)

Thanks for posting the videos MJ. I actually prefer these performances to the one on the Voice. I’m definitely a fan now!
