The iTunes Popularity Bars are Back!

Thanks to Prime Minister for discovering that the iTunes popularity bars are back! Here are all the iTunes performances from Top 13-Top7.

This week’s Top 7 part 2 performances, unfortunately, don’t have visible popularity bars. They are not included in this chart. (Normally, the popularity bars are hidden, by request of the Idol producers, to keep the public from knowing who’s out in front. Either there’s a glitch, or TPTB have knowingly released the popularity rankings)

I did add a few current downloads so we could figure out some rough sales figures.

Adam Lambert’s “Mad World” is #1 of all the charted Idol downloads, and sits between Jesse McCartney’s “How Do You Sleep” at #29 and Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You” at #30 on the current (as of 2:14 pm ET) iTunes Top 100 chart.

1. “Mad World” – Adam Lambert – Top 8
2. “Born to Be Wild” – Adam Lambert – Top 7a
3. “Falling Slowly” – Kris Allen – Top 7a
4. “The Tracks of My Tears” – Adam Lambert – Top 10
5. “Ring of Fire” – Adam Lambert – Top 11
6. “Play that Funky Music” – Adam Lambert – Top 9
7. “Black or White” – Adam Lambert – Top 13
8. “Ain’t No Sunshine” – Kris Allen – Top 9
9. “Endless Love” – Danny Gokey – Top 8
10. “To Make You Feel My Love” by Kris Allen – Top 11

Adam Lambert, Kris Allen and Danny Gokey appear to be leading the downloads race, with Adam way out in front.

ETA: rbidol put together some nice charts: Full List and Week by Week.

*Keep in mind this list is created from an iTunes rolling chart.   It only reflects downloads sold recently. We aren’t sure how wide the window is. It could be, roughly, from a few days to 1 week.

More after the jump…

  • jersey

Yikes that Megan appears before Lil!

    ETA: Go Adam and Kris!

  • wjmtv

We appear to be standing in the cab of a runaway train here.

  • SpenserJ

Hmm, it would seem that few people have received the memo that even though sometimes Matt sucks live – his recorded voice is the awesomest!!!111!!!

It would also seem that America has not fallen in love with Cook’s latest single.

A lot of the iTunes buyers seem to be on the same page as those of us wishing for an Adam/Kris/Allison top 3 :)

  • cay

So Cool! I’d love to know what Mad World did the week after he sang. And Tracks of my Tears. Can’t believe ROF is still up there.

Kris is doing very very well too. He’d definitely a front runner who could take it all. Danny isn’t too far behind.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

Wow! I guess this explains the pimping of Adam. $$$$$

ETA: It also explains why they’ve been desperately pushing Matt. His iTunes sales are up there with the Allison, Kris, and Danny.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Well, there’s your Top 3…or four.

I’d say the Top 2, unsurprisingly, would be Kris and Adam. Third place is up for grabs from the other three.

And, the vote splitters seem to be Danny, Matt, and Anoop, rather than Kris, Matt, and Anoop, as I initially thought.

  • JenG

This is very cool. I could deal with a Kris/Adam finale!

(BTW, your top 10 list is missing #6!)

  • star

You’re the best MJ! Go Adam! HOLY CRAP!!

  • just sayin

Actually, not to nitpick, but you left out a number on that top 10 you listed, MJ. And if you extend it to 10, it gives Kris one more mention. **sheepish grin**

  • background_noise

I’m thrilled that Born to be Wild is right up there considering it was so different than the live version and was probably a good sample of what might be on an Adam post-AI CD.

Yay for Mad World and Ring of Fire!

  • LaurelG

Hmmm. Maybe Adam will get wind of this, see how well BTBW (Rocky Horror Picture Show) and ROF (indulgent rubbish) are actually doing and decide to take a few more risks …

To me it looks like Adam ………… big gap …………, Kris … gap .. the rest.

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

Oh that is so cool -

  • JJ123

I guess it’s surprising Lil stuck around as long as she did. I think I need to go change my overall pick from Danny to Kris….I know Adam would be the better choice but I want Kris to win over him….oh wait, then I guess I should pick Adam in the pool since I usually lose, reverse psychology lol.

  • Michelle

    Niiice!!!!

We should take all the info we can before someone notices the glitch, lol.

So of the top 10, Adam has 6 (!), Kris has 3, Danny, 1. (taking into account MJ forgot #6 in her top 10 list above, heh…so Kris gets one more in there with TMYFML)

People seem to be buying anything Adam puts out, even those that were less popular like PTFM and BTBW. Definitely the frontrunner.

Are Danny’s fans just not the type to buy, like Syesha’s last year?

  • abbysee

I did not expect this. I mean this is almost the Adam Lambert show with his supporting guests, Kris and Allison?

  • MissM

That is very interesting. Are we on our way to an Adam/Kris finale with a Danny shockboot?

  • cay

Yes, Adam. Please no more Michael Orland stuff even if I loved hearing your voice on it. Please just go with your gut from here on out. You are at the top of your game when you just do your won stuff. Mad World, Ring of Fire, Born To Be Wild, Tears are the order of my favorites. I soo hope he doesn’t play to win here at the end. I’d much rather get more Ring of Fire and BTBW than all ballads. Just play for us your fans now. PLEASE………

I wish he knew how many people think Ring of Fire was the best performance ever on Idol. Guess you gotta play the game but I hope he sees this.

  • cheese

Hmm, I wonder who will win Idol this year? It looks like Kris might be in good shape for runner up.

Who is buying “Endless Love?” Good Gokey.

Anoop’s most popular song is higher than Matt’s most popular song? I’ll take a teeny little crumb of comfort in that, lol.

Ring of Fire is definitely my favorite Adam download. I was a little bored by this week’s song and hope he takes a break from the standing in the spotlight ballad thing next week.

  • leome

Judging by that the top 5 would be:
    - Adam
    - Kris
    - Danny
    - Allison
    - Matt

And, the vote splitters seem to be Danny, Matt, and Anoop, rather than Kris, Matt, and Anoop, as I initially thought.

I don’t really think we can take this type of conclusion from Itunes sales.
This how it stands this week, when a contestant has a better performance the other songs tend to go up that week. Things kinda change a bit from week to week. The only think I can be sure is that Adam dominates!

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m thrilled that Born to be Wild is right up there considering it was so different than the live version and was probably a good sample of what might be on an Adam post-AI CD.

I’m thrilled too – I flove BTBW and it fits right in with the dance/pop I listen to when I’m exercising. If he brought out an album along those lines I’d be first in the queue for it…

  • karenw

oooooooo .. very interesting .. Go Adam Lambert

Interesting to see how well Adam’s “indulgent rubbish” sells .. take note Simon!!!

Good on Kris too … I won’t be disappointed with and Adam/Kris final

  • dusty

Who will pick up Lil’s and Anoop’s votes?

And Matt’s, when he is booted (assuming he goes next week, America already booted him once)?

Would those votes going to Kris, Allison or Danny change anything in the 2,3, and 4th places for this season?

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

Something to think about for those who say Adam will never sell huh?

  • Dr. Tracey

It’s cool to see it layed out like that, thanks MJ.

I’d bet that if this week’s songs were included Gokey would be knocked right out of that top 10.

  • Scamp

I bought all of Adam’s performances and his studio recording, just like I bought all of David Cook’s. : )

And I am DELIGHTED to see that I’m NOT the only one who loves RING OF FIRE. RING OF FIRE, MAD WORLD, and BLACK AND WHITE are my FAVORITE Adam Lambert songs.

number 6 is missing! I wonder if it’s something of Adam’s. What’s missing??

  • TwigLA

I’d love to see where this weeks songs place. Of course, I can’t buy any of this week’s. I get ‘song not available’.

It’s looking very strong for Adam and Kris.

  • weareallinnocent

Nice work MJ and primeminister! Whoooohoooo, so lookey there! Me likey. :-)

I also like seeing BTBW, PTFM, and RoF doing so well. It doesn’t really surprise me though. Those are really fantastic (and/or fun) recordings.

ETA: Adam’s 6 of the Top 10 equals all of his studio recordings (except for this week’s which isn’t shown.) That’s pretty exciting!

  • pj

Awesome. Thanks PM and MJ! Very interesting indeed.

Which reminds me… I need to change my overall pick in the pool if I’m going to have a chance at having fewer points than Spense.

  • Duke

I LOVE IT!!! ADAM FTW!!! this proves ppl arent just into watching his visuals

  • snuffles

Does this answer peopleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s questions know whether or not the music buying public out in the “real world” would by music from Adam Lambert? Since some of you liked to assume his only appeal was live performances.

And for the record, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not surprised. Before this, I was looking at the number of RATINGS each contestant was getting for their song, and Adam was clearly kicking everyoneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a$$ up and down the block.

From the looks of this, I think Top 2 will be Adam vs. Kris. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d say 3rd place is still up for grabs between Gokey and Allison!

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

I hope Paula sees this. She’ll stop yelling “See you in the final!” at Danny….

  • CC

So, when you are on itunes, what do you type in the search to get the list? I could never figure that out, even before it was hidden…?????

  • justshootme

Yowsa. Go Adam. I wonder how far ahead he is in the actual voting. I’m thinking it may be a blowout.

    I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t buy any of this weekà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s. I get à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢song not availableà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢.

It was doing that for me to, I just clicked on Buy Album and it worked though.

  • aly

Thanks Primeminister for finding and MJ for posting.
It’s fun to sneak a peak at something we are not supposed to.

Look at Adam!! I’m not real surprised, but it’s still exciting! His
“Mad World” and “Ring of Fire” were brilliant studio recordings!
I’m practically addicted to Mad World.– heehee

  • cmheart

I’m trying to figure out how to see the popularity rating on iTunes as well. Anyone know?

  • Kirsten

Something to think about for those who say Adam will never sell huh?

I think that there tends to be a lot of excitement during the season that doesn’t necessarily transfer to post-season sales. Plus, there is the fear in all long-time Idol viewers as to what TPTB might make a winner record. Sometimes, they are an unimaginative and inflexible lot. And, surely, Diane Warwick has another song to shop around.

I recall Bucky’s AI single didn’t sell all that well, but he got decent material on his album (no Warwick) and decent support from his label and did really well. AI popularity will drive you so far, but each album is a bit of a reset button.

Any idea on the rolling window for these popularity bars? I know we predict that the regular pop bars are for about the last 3.5 days, but some of the charts have smaller polling windows.

  • SpenserJ

Which reminds meà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ I need to change my overall pick in the pool if Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m going to have a chance at having fewer points than Spense.

Catch me if you can, I’m the mother f#*king ginger bread man!

    I hope Paula sees this. Sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll stop yelling à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“See you in the final!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ at Dannyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

Perhaps in the alternative universe in which Paula resides, Danny is actually good?

  • star

I think that there tends to be a lot of excitement during the season that doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t necessarily transfer to post-season sales.

Well sure, but I think the point is that the potential is there.

  • snuffles

Still, this show which fans of which contestants are willing to put their money where their mouths are (or voting fingers)!

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

    I hope Paula sees this. Sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll stop yelling à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“See you in the final!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ at Dannyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

Perhaps in the alternative universe in which Paula resides, Danny is actually good?

He is…but I don’t live in Paula’s alternate universe. Hehe. I wouldn’t want her look too stupid for yelling that inaccurately, though. I love me some Paula….

I’m beginning to wish we had the popularity bars from the beginning of the season. It looks like what happened with me after David Cook sang “Billie Jean.” I went back and bought everything from that point back.

  • CathyMK

WOW- I knew Adam was way ahead of the others in terms of mentions in articles, online polls, etc. Amazing to see that it’s carrying over to the sales numbers as well. I guess the general iTunes buying public isn’t having a hard time seeing Adam as current, or worrying about what kind of album he’ll put out. I wonder if 19 and SONY have already decided to sign him, no matter where he finishes. I remember last year, Simon Fuller mentioned in an interview that both Davids were being signed a few weeks before the finale even happened.

  • Trina

From the looks of this, I think Top 2 will be Adam vs. Kris. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d say 3rd place is still up for grabs between Gokey and Allison!

I’d love to see Kris get in there but to give you an idea how iTunes numbers doesn’t necessarily translate to votes..Syesha. She sold poorly all season yet she made it all the way to top 3.

  • dusty

I wonder if 19 and SONY have already decided to sign him, no matter where he finishes.

IMO they will not only sign him, they will be working to make him a huge international star at a level that only Kelly C. has accomplished to date.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d love to see Kris get in there but to give you an idea how iTunes numbers doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t necessarily translate to votes..Syesha. She sold poorly all season yet she made it all the way to top 3.

Well, I think I’m witnessing Kris pull a dark horse move here. I don’t think we have any Syeshas remaining in this group – not even Danny.

But, I can see the unreliability in that Allison’s somewhere on par with Danny and Matt, and she still keeps ending up in the Bottom 3 somehow.

  • snuffles

I think Syesha rode a nice combination of “the hot chick”/”african-american” vote to the Top 3 last year. And as boring as I found her, she still had a hell of a lot better voice than Lil.

  • Duke

Wait, how come there is no #6?

  • weareallinnocent

Yeah, I don’t think sales translate to votes at all. But I do think it tells of the possibility/probability that a contestant will be signed (or not) and we’ll get an album (or not.) Or maybe I’m doing my wishful thinking, since I REALLY want to hear an Adam album, like now. :-)

  • CathyMK

But, I can see the unreliability in that Allisonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s somewhere on par with Danny and Matt, and she still keeps ending up in the Bottom 3 somehow.

Well, for the record, Matt has not only been in the Bottom 3, he’s been the lowest vote getter 1 week, while Danny’s never been in the Bottom 3. So, yeah, there is the Syesha factor to think about for Danny, but Adam and Kris have also never been in the Bottom 3, and have the biggest sales. That’s a pretty good argument that for them the sales are translating into votes, just as it did for both Davids last year. For that matter, Syesha practically lived in the Bottom 3 last year, so her experience correlates most closely with Allison’s this year (not that a sample size of 1 is a going to give us a reliable pattern!).

  • SpenserJ

But, I can see the unreliability in that Allisonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s somewhere on par with Danny and Matt, and she still keeps ending up in the Bottom 3 somehow.

Yeah, I’m not sure that these iTunes sales are indicative of where the kids will finish. I also doubt they’re a sign of who will sell what after this is all over.

I think what they tell us is, that of the people who both watch this show and like to buy the downloads, more of those people prefer Adam’s selections.

For all we know, the iTunes buyers might be made up of people who largely don’t vote. And, the big group of casual voters may not be iTunes buyers at all.

  • snuffles

    Yeah, it should be

    1) Adam – Mad World
    2) Adam – Born To Be Wild
    3) Kris – Falling Slowly
    4) Adam – Tracks of My Tears
    5) Adam – Ring of Fire
    6) Adam – Play That Funky Music
    7) Adam – Black or White
    8) Kris – Ain’t No Sunshine
    9) Gokey – Endless Love
    10) Kris – To Make You Feel My Love

  • BootStar

It would also seem that America has not fallen in love with Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s latest single.

While I would have to agree that “Come Back To Me” isn’t exactly breaking any records, a lot of folks already owned the song since it’s on his album. I do, however, find it odd that they don’t provide a link to his album on the Idol page this season since he did perform. I mean they link to Carrie’s and Brooke’s new singles (along with Kanye’s), but not Cook’s, Clarkson’s or Pickler’s. Have no idea why.

  • jersey

Kirsten – did you mean Diane Warren?

  • pj

Catch me if you can, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m the mother f#*king ginger bread man!

Just switched my overall pick from Adam to Matt. Game on! :-)

  • kimberann

I think Cook’s new single is just off to a slow start. I bet it will hit top 10 after all is said and done. It’s better than so much other crap on the radio. :lol_wp:

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Well, for the record, Matt has not only been in the Bottom 3, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been the lowest vote getter 1 week, while Dannyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s never been in the Bottom 3. So, yeah, there is the Syesha factor to think about for Danny, but Adam and Kris have also never been in the Bottom 3, and have the biggest sales. I think it’s more of any indicator that, since the polling window is only so many days, that Danny’s not gaining more buyers while Kris, on the other hand, actually is. Whoever bought Danny’s stuff bought it as soon as it was available, and that’s it. I also think that’s why we only see Endless Love in the Top 10, since it was the song he sang Top 7, Part 1. I don’t think there’s any “back-buying” for him. I think it shows (even up to Top 20) that some people who heard Kris’ recent performances went back and purchased more songs. Of the Top 20 Idol downloads, he has 5 to Danny’s 4.

  • rbidol

^^Good analysis, GwendolynD…of course we can’t tell anything exactly from these bars but they are actual data (which we’ve been very short of this season, lol) regarding the kids’ relative popularity and how they’re trending.

    eta:
    Thanks rbidol!
-Adam has the least variation – his highest track is #1 and lowest at #7 – people are going back to buy ALL his stuff (completists = invested fans) He’s have a lock on the top 6 spots except Kris snuck in there with Falling Slowly, and even that needed to be a very good performance and his most recent one to sneak in there
-Kris ranges from #3 to #23, with his more noteworthy performances ranking higher but all within the top 25
-Danny’s pattern is similar to Kris’, with clear standout performances that rank higher, except his range falls a little lower from #9 to #25.
-Allison and Matt are spread out over the list, reflecting to me their ups and downs through the season. Also, their songs tend to rank by recency…so casual fans who care enough to who buy their latest stuff fresh in the memory but not necessarily going back for older songs.

  • gingerly

I still think Danny (unfortunately) will be in the finale. I’d rather he go home yesterday, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. I just think he has people who will vote for him but never spend their hard earned cash on him (not when there’s rolex’s and elcalades to buy for their pastors). I don’t know that iTunes sales translate all that much to votes unless you’re way ahead of the game as Adam is and Cook was last year. I’d much rather see Kris or Allison in the finale with Adam, but I honestly don’t think it’s going to happen.

  • annabelina

I’m so happy! Danny not making the finale might actually happen, and if I can’t have Allison in the finale, I’ll totally take Kris! Wee!

  • rbidol

Okay, now I’ll do the most to least popular by week, starting with Top 13: Michael Jackson:

    1. Adam: Black or White (Top 13)
    2. Kris: Remember the Time (Top 13)
    3. Danny: P.Y.T. (Top 13)
    4. Allison: Give In to Me (Top 13)
    5. Matt: Human Nature (Top 13)
    6. Alexis: Dirty Diana (Top 13)
    7. Megan: Rockin Robin (Top 13)
    8. Anoop: Beat It (Top 13)
    9. Lil: The Way You Make Me Feel (Top 13)

    11. Jorge: Never Can Say Goodbye (Top 13)
    12. Michael: You Are Not Alone (Top 13)
    13. Scott: Keep the Faith (Top 13)

  • Kirsten

Kirsten – did you mean Diane Warren?

LOL. Yeah. I try to purge her from my memory.

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know that iTunes sales translate all that much to votes unless youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re way ahead of the game as Adam is and Cook was last year.

Syesha was a prime example of this. We were able to see the pop bars for quite a while last year, and she was clearly being outsold by most of the contestants (by a country mile), yet she still made final 3.

  • Scamp

Wouldn’t it be cute that roommates Adam and Kris may be the Top 2? : )

Matt G recently mentioned that he has his own room in the mansion now and he likes it. He had to share until his roommate was booted.

I wonder if Adam and Kris are split up now as rooms became available. Just wondering… Does anyone else ever wonder about this stuff? : )))

Anyway, I think that the these two doll babies should be the top two as long as Adam wins.

  • BootStar

So does anybody think this little glitch/leak was done on purpose? I mean last season they clearly started to pimp Cook after Rickey started reporting on the iTunes sales figures. It was pretty obvious that he was selling the most, so TPTB would have an incentive to see Cook stick around. Since a lot of folks don’t like the excessive Adam pimping, maybe this is a tactic to justify why they’ve continued to pimp him and why they may begin to seriously de-pimp Danny?

And I’m really not that surprised that Kris is doing so well. He’s been a standout for me since the beginning. He just keeps getting better and better.

  • rbidol

Next is Top 11: Grand Ole Opry:

    1. Adam: Ring of Fire (Top 11)
    2. Kris: To Make You Feel My Love (Top 11)
    3. Danny: Jesus Take the Wheel (Top 11)
    4. Anoop: Always on My Mind (Top 11)
    5. Matt: So Small (Top 11)
    6. Allison: Blame It On Your Heart (Top 11)
    7. Megan: Walkin After Midnight (Top 11)
    8. Alexis: Jolene (Top 11)
    9. Scott: Wild Angels (Top 11)
    10. Lil: Independence Day (Top 11)
    11. Michael: Ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Going Down (Top 11)

  • weareallinnocent

Ah, NVM. Mystery solved just above. LOL

  • baxter

WOW…Kirsten- i didn’t think you goofed. I thought you just merged Diane Warren and Ken Warwick ( isn’t he the producer from Idol??) LOL

  • rbidol

Next we have Top 10: Motown-

    1. Adam: Tracks of My Tears (Top 10)
    2. Kris: How Sweet It Is (Top 10)
    3. Allison: Papa Was A Rolling Stone (Top 10)
    4. Matt: Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Get It On (Top 10)

    9. Scott: Canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Hurry Love (Top 10)
    10. Lil: Heatwave (Top 10)

  • cay

I think this is very good news for Danny, Adam and Kris. Cook, Archie AND Jason got MAJOR recording contracts last year. I think itunes had something to do with Jason’s. I mean, if you are on the most popular show in the nation and not selling well, then it’s a big risk for a record company.

I feel strongly that no matter how it finishes, these 3 WILL get a major recording contract somewhere. And that makes me happy. I think the mysterious “Syesha” voters are probably split between Kris and Danny. That’s why I say Adam may not make the finale. But, he’ll def be signed! I think it says a lot that old songs (Black and White) are still doing well. Kris is also showing his really impressive rise to the front. I’m sure 19 will grab them up.

I don’t know why they’d do this on purpose. I think it’s going along as they want. If it is on purpose, it’s for Kris’ benefit. Maybe they see Allison isn’t catching on, and they REALLY want Kris instead of Danny.

  • SpenserJ

    I mean they link to Carrieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s and Brookeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s new singles (along with Kanyeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s), but not Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s, Clarksonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s or Picklerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s. Have no idea why.

That does seem odd (irrelevant fact: I love Brooke’s single). Considering that Carrie seems to be magical elf who could sell 100,000 downloads just by sneezing, I’m thinking she needs the AI pimping the least lol.

PJ: I’m going to take you down in a hail of bullets. Prepare to meet defeat.

    Kimberann: I admire your optimism.

  • background_noise

rbidol ~ thanks for making those weekly lists (and the big one too!)

Any way to show the weekly bars? I’m curious about Ring of Fire (#1) and Grand Old Opry night in particular.

  • Kirsten

WOWà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Kirsten- i didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think you goofed. I thought you just merged Diane Warren and Ken Warwick ( isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t he the producer from Idol??) LOL

Maybe they are the same person. Have we ever seen Warwick and Warren in the same room together? It would certainly explain why we Idol viewers are constantly having Warren’s songs inflicted upon us.

Perhaps I have subconciously stumbled onto the truth. Cue X-Files Music.

  • rbidol

Then there is the top 9: “Top Downloads”:

    1. Adam: Play that Funky Music (Top 9)
    2. Kris: Ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t No Sunshine (Top 9)
    3. Danny: What Hurts the Most (Top 9)
    4. Allison: Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Speak (Top 9)
    5. Matt: You Found Me (Top 9)
    6. Megan: Turn Your Lights Down Low (Top 9)
    7. Anoop: Caught Up (Top 9)
    8. Scott: Just the Way You Are (Top 9)
    9. Lil: I Surrender (Top 9)

  • rbidol

Next we have Top 9: Year You Were Born: (see compiled list below)

  • rbidol

And finally, the Top 7 (Part I): The Movies: (see compiled list below)

  • Hazehel

I’m wondering if anyone kept a convenient list of the chart for last year? We can’t see what the chart positions were for the songs before, so I’m interested to see if we can estimate the chart positions those songs might have reached on the week they are released. Rickey did keep track of some last year, but it’s fragmentary and not that convenient to search through the archive. From I can find out, Billie Jean was number 1 on the week it was released, number 8 the following week, and number 16 three weeks later. I don’t know how typical that is and what the trajectory of the sales are like for the other songs, but I suspect that Adam’s Mad World and Ring Of Fire would have been at the least a top 5 song on their first week.

  • rbidol

Okay, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll put it all together in one post (sorry, I should have done this from the start…you might want to delete the others, MJ):

  • Michelle

    rbidol, you’re my hero :)

If that’s how they’re trending right now, it’s a very clear Top 4, with Adam solidly in 1st, Kris and Danny battling for 2nd and 3rd (it’ll depend on his maintaining upward momentum but now I think Kris might possibly get in there for 2nd) and Allison at 4th.

I think they figured Adam’s such a clear frontrunner now it doesn’t matter if everyone knows. Either that, or someone goofed, lol.

  • s0x_prisoner

Hmm, I’m surprised that Matt isn’t higher up on the charts. He has the best recordings, IMO.

  • Mary

Thank you rbidol (and MJ)! Very illuminating!

  • rbidol

    Quick Analysis:

    -Adam is first every week.
-Kris is second every week but one.
-Danny has never been higher than third.
    -Allison is most often fourth.
-Matt is typically fifth or sixth on the chart.

  • LaurelG

still think Danny (unfortunately) will be in the finale. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d rather he go home yesterday, but unfortunately that didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t happen. I just think he has people who will vote for him but never spend their hard earned cash on him (not when thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s rolexà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s and elcalades to buy for their pastors). I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know that iTunes sales translate all that much to votes unless youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re way ahead of the game as Adam is and Cook was last year.

This is my read on things too. I think Danny picks up more casual voters than Kris and they’re just not the type to buy iTunes. Plus the fact that even TWO nights ago, Paula was yelling,”See you in the final!” to Danny just makes me suspicious of how much they know about vote totals. If it were someone else besides Paula, I might think they were setting us up, but she’s too kind-hearted and sincere for those tricks.

  • cmheart

I think the main reason Syesha made it to #3 is that her fellow contestants were cracking under the pressure. Jason Castro and Brooke White kept fumbling and Syesha remained fairly consistent each week. No way could Jason Castro have survived another week after his last two performances (and it was obvious even he wanted to be voted off). And correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Brooke’s last performance when she had to restart the song? I think if some of the other contestants had been performing better on the actual show…than who knows, she may have left a lot earlier.

That’s why I think the next few weeks may quite be interesting and very important for them to perform extremely well.

  • oceana

Hmm I don’t know why people think Danny will be in the finale, when Kris has clearly done better. But this is itunes right? A lot of the voters might not even download on itunes. So I don’t know how it translates into actual votes.

I would so much love Danny not to be in the finale. Maybe if I do a rain dance or something to appease the gods.

Just a little plug for David Cook, his song would have been higher if captured the day after he sang it, instead of weeks later. Sorry couldn’t resist. :)

  • dusty

If it were someone else besides Paula, I might think they were setting us up, but sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s too kind-hearted and sincere for those tricks.

There is Paula’s contract negotiation that’s underway. ;)

  • leome

That does seem odd (irrelevant fact: I love Brookeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s single). Considering that Carrie seems to be magical elf who could sell 100,000 downloads just by sneezing, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m thinking she needs the AI pimping the least lol.

Carrie and Brooke had the new singles being released when they went on idol, separate from albums. I wonder if that could be the reason. Just a guess…
Btw, Cook’s new single is doing well. But I don’t think MJ want us to go there so I’ll save you from context.

It seems to me that Danny and Kris are doing pretty much the same in sales, I can’t see Danny as a Syesha case at all. The girl was always at the end of the list.

  • lovegoodmusic

    BootStar:

I do, however, find it odd that they donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t provide a link to his album on the Idol page this season since he did perform. I mean they link to Carrieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s and Brookeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s new singles (along with Kanyeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s), but not Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s, Clarksonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s or Picklerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s. Have no idea why.

The producers and management team this year at American Idol is very wonky this year. And I realize that they’re still trying to work the kinks out since Nigel left. But how could they make such a gross mistake by not promoting their own Idols?

Back to the subject at hand, I love when MJ posts stuff like this. Thank you.

I also I think Kris is the dark horse and could possibly make it to the finale if the producers and judges give him a chance. And personally Kris knocked Adam to second place on my list of favorites, because he creates music that I will buy.

  • Victoria

I think this may be the most interesting Idol-related thing I’ve seen in a long time. Thanks, Primeminister for finding it and MJ for posting it!

And correct me if Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m wrong, but wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Brookeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s last performance when she had to restart the song?

She got voted off the week after when she sang I’m a Believer and I am, I Said.

  • SpenserJ

Hmm, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m surprised that Matt isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t higher up on the charts. He has the best recordings, IMO.

I think the download numbers somewhat reflect the enthusiasm the purchasers had for the live performances. I’m not so sure people go in search of downloads if they weren’t fond of the live performance. They have no way of knowing how Matt records. And, I think their enthusiasm for him live performance was reflected in the fact that last week, they effectively voted him off.

If it were someone else besides Paula, I might think they were setting us up, but sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s too kind-hearted and sincere for those tricks.

I’ll respectfully disagree here. I think Paula is equally as manipulative as Simon and moreso than Randy, who is actually too dumb to actually be manipulative.

  • sbalk017

    Well, no duh about Adam…

There’s definently some wiggle room too… Danny fans are older and probably more likely to pay for the songs than younger Kris, Allison, and Adam fans who can work the internet better. It’s weird how the rakings all seem to stay the same week to week… Last year it always seemed that Brooke and Jason were battling it out for third and fourth…

  • rbidol

Finally, one more bit of analysis:

-Adam has ranked as high as 1 and as low as 7 (with six songs).

-Kris has ranked as high as 3 and as low as 23 (with six songs).

-Danny has ranked as high as 9 and as low as 25 (with six songs).

-Allison has ranked as high as 11 and as low as 33 (with six songs).

-Matt has ranked as high as 14 and as low as 32 (with six songs).

-Anoop ranked as high as 13 and as low as 43 (with six songs).

-Lil ranked as as high as 38 and as low as 58 (with six songs).

-Scott ranked as high as 41 and as low as 56 (with five songs).

-Megan ranked as high as 34 and as low as 44 (with four songs).

-Michael ranked as high as 48 and as low as 55 (with three songs).

-Alexis ranked as high as 37 and as low as 39 (with two songs).

-Jasmine ranked as high as 50 (with one song).

-Jorge ranked as high as 51 (with one song).

  • BootStar

rbidol, sorry, I’m just a little confused! :confused_ee:

Are those weekly rankings based on how they’re selling this week, or how they sold the week they performed? Because it would make sense that somebody might buy a contestants’ earlier performances if they were buying the one from this week.

    Thanks!

  • Niall

Looking at those numbers I get the feeling AI (specifically Simon) is bringing Gokey along and pretending he’s at Adam’s level, simply to use him as cannon fodder at Adam’s coronation. They have to pick somebody as the patsy ’cause based on those iTunes sales #s nobody else is even close to his popularity.

  • hardkandy

And correct me if Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m wrong, but wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Brookeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s last performance when she had to restart the song?

Nope.. she made the top 5, Neil Diamond week and performed I’m A Believer and I Am… I Said (one of my personal favorites)

Exactly that! I have no fondness of Matt’s live recordings so I have no idea how he records. If I like the live performance, I will go on and buy the recorded one. If I don’t care for the live performance, I have no interest in buying the recorded one.

  • rbidol

BootStar, I’m not sure of the answer to your question. It is a question for MJ, really, because I am only working with her data. I am assuming this is cumulative, but I am not positive. The reason I think it is cumulative is because I am sure that this week Danny’s top 7 song sold better than Adam’s top 13 song, but again I am not 100% positive.

  • gingerly

The problem, as I see it, with your analysis rbidol is that you are looking at the rankings as a snapshot in time. The rankings weren’t available when they were current. It really makes it not mean all that much to me. If you were able to get that snapshot each week, it would be much more telling. It makes sense for those still in the competition (and especially for Adam because he’s totally raking it in, as Cook did last year), but going back at this point I don’t get.

  • Buderschnookie

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll respectfully disagree here. I think Paula is equally as manipulative as Simon and moreso than Randy, who is actually too dumb to actually be manipulative.

For her, for me, I would amend that to whomever writes her lines is equally manipulative.
I fully believe that the times she stumbles most is when she is parroting someone elses thoughts. She tries to put it into her own words and becomes hopelessly confuzzled.

  • tinawina

DDDDAAAAAAAMMMMMNNNN, Adam! Dude is just killing the ITunes sales.

  • Victoria

Expect the iTunes glitch to be fixed quickly, if it was in fact an accident. Someone just started a thread about it on the official boards.

ETA: Wow, that disappeared fast, lol!

Oh yes, I totally agree. I am 100% certain that Paula has a paid employee whose job description includes: “attend rehearsal and write my critiques for me. Also, please add some insults for Simon so that America will think I’m funny. Most importantly, do not forget the “Special Sauce” in my Coke cup.”

  • Kirsten

I am assuming this is cumulative since the song was released, and not just this week, but I am not positive.

I don’t think that’s a valid assumption to make. I don’t know how the list was generated, but i-Tunes pop-bars/rankings are typically for a rolling window of time (the last N hours or M days or whatever). Otherwise, it never gives a chance for newer songs to shine. They have to accumulate so many sales in order to catch up first. Plus, the pop-bars/rankings are meant to tell you “what’s hot now”, not “what has sold a lot since the history of time”. Jordin’s “No Air” would probably be topping the chart if that were true.

I would be very surprised if this reflects more than 3 or 4 days worth of sales. Certainly less than a week.

  • rbidol

I guess you are right, gingerly, that at the time, say Michael Jackson night, Danny may have sold more copies of “P.Y.T.” than Kris did of “Remember the Time”. But nevertheless, at this moment, Kris has sold more copies of his song than Danny’s song that same week, which is still interesting. In the long run, at least, Kris’s song from that night has proved to be more popular. This is also true of Movies night, the night closest to now, and therefore most immune to your critique.

  • dzbebepnai

    Yayyyy Anoop:)

  • Victoria

I would be very surprised if this reflects more than 3 or 4 days worth of sales. Certainly less than a week.

Isn’t it for a day? Because the iTunes charts change every day, so I would think all the popularity bars would be updated then as well.

  • sunchick

I do, however, find it odd that they donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t provide a link to his album on the Idol page this season since he did perform. Have no idea why.

Carrie’s single is the duet with Randy Travis, which is different than the album version, yes? Also, Brooke’s album isn’t out yet, so her single right now is stand alone single, for lack of a better term. What I mean is, it seems they are only linking to stand alone singles rather than albums. Don’t know why, really, though. If I were 19 I’d have slapped a link up to anything that’s for sale by everyone I’m managing, at least.

Bases on this data, I’m calling Mad World as the Billie Jean/ABMB/Imagine/Let It Be/Hallelujah of this season, ie, the track that keeps selling long after the performance is over. That is what tended to be the best predictor of a true breakout performance, if I remember correctly…because a single from a good performance (like MJ’s It’s All Wrong) will sell big in the week it’s performed, but a break out performance single will keep selling for awhile. Am I shocked that Adam is kicking ass? Hellls no.

  • Kirsten

Isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t it for a day? Because the iTunes charts change every day, so I would think all the popularity bars would be updated then as well.

iTunes refuses to say what the duration of their polling window is. In the past, it certainly seemed to be about a 24 hour window, but that changed about 2 years ago. Then, it suddenly started to take longer for songs to climb to the top. The current best guess is that the rolling window is about 3 or 4 days. The rolling window provides a bit of stability (and less subject to manipulation) while still reporting what is currently hot.

  • tinawina

I would be very surprised if this reflects more than 3 or 4 days worth of sales. Certainly less than a week.

    Yep. I agree.

at the time, say Michael Jackson night, Danny may have sold more copies of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“P.Y.T.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ than Kris did of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Remember the Timeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . But nevertheless, at this moment, Kris has sold more copies of his song than Dannyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s song that same week, which is still interesting. In the long run, at least, Krisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s song from that night has proved to be more popular.

Or it could be that we are looking at a rush on all Kris’ songs after he had a great performance on Tuesday night. It’s hard to tell.

  • rbidol

But if it only reflects the last 3 or 4 days, I think that is shocking. It would mean that Jamine Murray and Jorge Nunez, who have been off the show for more than a month, have had more downloads than three of Lil’s songs…despite the fact that Lil was still in the public eye and the other two are all but forgotten by most. Would’t that be weird?

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Thanks for those charts rbidol. I posted links out front.

Yes, Kirsten is correct. This chart is only reflects the last few days at most. Which is one of the reasons why I didn’t bother to do a week by week analysis.

  • tinawina

I think that is shocking. It would mean that Jamine Murray and Jorge Nunez, who have been off the show for more than a month, have had more downloads than three of Lilà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s songsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦despite the fact that Lil was still in the public eye and the other two are all but forgotten by most.

Heh. Well if it helps, all those bars seem about the same length to me. I don’t think they outsold her by much, if at all.

  • rbidol

Okay, sorry. I’m wrong then. And I was just looking at it, and it does make sense, because each person’s most recent performance is also their highest ranked performance.

I do still think it is strange that Jasmine and Jorge do better than Lil on so many songs, however. I guess it just emphasizes the strangeness of Lil’s run!

  • Kirsten

    Wouldà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t that be weird?

Kind of sad, but not really all that weird.

I think what happens is that some people probably buy in batches. “Oh, I really liked that song by X this week. I should buy it. Oh, while I’m here why don’t I buy that song X did that other week and oh, remember that Jorge, I liked his song too. Oh, well, it’s only 99 cents.”

What Jorge and Jasmine have going for them is that they only have one song. So, if somebody wants a souvenier of an artist, that is the one song they can buy. Lil has lots of songs, so people can pick and choose which ones they want and some of her songs end up falling below Jorge’s and Jasmine’s. We see this kind of pattern every year (that the people who leave first have one song and that outsells some of those songs from those that stay longer).

  • sunchick

I think that is shocking. It would mean that Jamine Murray and Jorge Nunez, who have been off the show for more than a month, have had more downloads than three of Lilà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s songsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦despite the fact that Lil was still in the public eye and the other two are all but forgotten by most.

As people pointed out, we’ve seen it before….The Syesha Mercado Anomaly. Nobody, but nobody bought her iTunes (metaphorically speaking), but she made it to top 3. I think the AI audience was conditioned to love the R&B diva-esque singers above all else for so long that when the show broke away from the idea that being the next Whitney is the be all and end all of the music business, some of the core fanbase refused to come along for the ride. It’s like the R&B Diva Memorial Voting Block. That’s my theory. Lil’s suckage might have killed their dream, though, and maybe they won’t be such a force in the future.

Also just realized that Jesse McCartney is only at number 29 on the main chart, which means all of the Idols are lower…is that correct? Didn’t Billie Jean and ABMB chart number one in all of iTunes when they debuted? It would be interesting to see how Mad World tracked when it debuted.

  • background_noise

it does make sense, because each personà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s most recent performance is also their highest ranked performance.

Well, except in the case of Mad World (#1), which trumps even the more recent Born to be Wild (#2)

  • cmheart

“Also just realized that Jesse McCartney is only at number 29 on the main chart, which means all of the Idols are lowerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦is that correct? Didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Billie Jean and ABMB chart number one in all of iTunes when they debuted?”

Yeah, but these aren’t the debut numbers. As MJ noted, these are just from the last few days. So who knows how well each track charted on the day/week they did debut. I’m assuming Mad World was probably fairly high since two weeks later it’s even at #30ish.

  • hardkandy

hmm not sure I understand how this imix chart works but if it’s only for recent downloads, mad world could’ve possibly ranked higher when it first came out… it could have gone to #1, since the gary jules version charted pretty high… but we’ll never know.

  • leome

This reflects the bump that those songs are getting from being thursday, the day people go and buy the idol’s singles. On saturday/sunday they’ll start going down.
It would be really interesting to see how this week’s songs are doing though. But maybe I’m just being eager now.

  • hollygo9

As people pointed out, weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve seen it beforeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.The Syesha Mercado Anomaly.

also known as, ‘the difference between voting for free and paying for songs’. It’s how someone can finish high and be a total flop on the charts.

  • LoveU

Well, I guess that’s partly because I just got “Mad World” today.

    It sounds TOTALLY GREAT.

  • tigervixxxen

From my understanding the popularity bars are at one fixed period in time. These are not cumulative totals. Itunes is likely on a rolling 2-3 day period so this is a measure of the popularity as of “right now”. Therefore you have to give more weight to an older song still hanging up with the newer songs. having a song on the list like Jesse McCartney helps with context because next week we can look up what he sold and attempt to extrapolate what that means in terms of sales for the Idols based on popularity and relative position to regular songs currently charting.

My guess as to why Cook, Kelly and Pickler’s performances were not put up for sale is because they are pushing album and single sales, not one off performance sales. Brooke doesn’t have anything else to sell and the life cycle of Carrie’s album is long enough that they can afford to put out another version of her song. In Cook’s case especially they have not put up anything else for sale other than the album material. My guess it is because they want any and all interest funneled into album sales.

I wish the telephone voting system would be abolished and America would vote with their wallets and itunes sales. Boot the person who sells the least amount of itunes downloads. Its the real world solution to see who is the “best” contestant.

  • cwg509

Hmm, I bought all top 7 songs, I guess that makes me a typical buyer/fan…

my faves are the top 3 as well

    very cool info, thanks mj

(love the blog in general, just discovered it this year)

  • KrazeeK120

I’ve only bought 3 downloads…Adam’s “Mad World,” Kris’ “Falling Slowly,” and Anoop’s “Everything I Do.” Looks like 2 of those are on par with what others are also buying…maybe I’m not so weird after all. However, the one I can’t stop listening to is Kris’ “Falling Slowly.” It’s just so hauntingly beautiful. Ahhhhh. Maybe someone can show this to Randy so he can take back the comments he gave Kris after that performance???

Nice work, detectives! That’s some interesting stuff there!

  • hollygo9

It’s not necessarily a good indicator of overall sales since we’re so deep into this season but it’s a good indicator of who’s currently popular going into next week.
and it’s renewing hope for an Adam v Kris finale.

  • zs

Thanks MJ for this info, makes very interesting reading. Adam should be the clear winner of the season. For every 100-s of contestants that the judges diss on tv, 1 Adam comes along; and this is why the show is worth watching lest Adam-like contestants will never be heard of beyond their small circle of influence. With 1 favorite gone (Anoop – made to leave) and the other an obvious front runner (Adam), the next 4 weeks should play out w/no great drama. The top 2 will be a little league vs mlb title challenge.

Adam comes across as a very smart person that is not always a good thing to be signed with 19E. If he somehow loses in the vote count, it will certainly be to AI’s loss, not his, the proof is pretty clear from these ratings.

  • SpenserJ

Whether Adam wins or loses, I think these iTunes sales are further evidence that TPTB will excersize their option to sign him. I suspect Adam will be in their clutches regardless of his placement. So, I think it’s more adventageous for him to win. At least with the popularity of the win, you have the tiniest bit of leverage when it comes time to make the cd.

2nd, 3rd, or 4th place a 19 contract pretty much guarantees a bunch of lame pop stars’ cast off songs one Diane Warren song one mandatory appearance in a lame David Foster PBS special.

and also he’d have the same promo that cook got this season…
that is if he does well and they don’t treat him like taylor

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

I think 19 will sign him either way as well, Spencer. He sells. That counts for a lot.

  • proudmom

Wow. David A. seems to be doing quite well with “Touch My Hand” sales, considering it’s been less than 24 hours since the performance.

  • Cakenbake

Adam is so far ahead that basically the battle is for 2nd place between Danny and Kris.

Even though Dowloads are different than actual phone/text votes it would be interesting to see how Kris and Danny do on the phone/text votes.

I really believe that Kris Allen might have passed Danny Gokey last week in phone and text votes.

I do think with some backing and good song writing Kris might actually have a more successful career after Idol than Danny looking at the itunes download sales.

  • downeast

Well, I feel like a big fat goober, but i have to ask… who is Jesse McCartney?

(Please be gentle. I skipped last season altogether in protest over the Melinda Doolittle screwification of Season 6… so if this Jesse McCartney person was last year’s? je suis confuse…)

  • downeast

proudmom…it’s even more amazing that Archie is doing well with that song considering…he did not Sound Good last night, poor baby…I heard he was sick?

  • hollygo9

Well, I feel like a big fat goober, but i have to askà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ who is Jesse McCartney?

He’s a teen popstar not affiliated with the Idol brand. He’s done a little light acting on Disney and such. If you don’t have a tween in your home, you prolly missed out on this person’s career.

  • JOJOSIE

I hope all the Adam fans aren’t getting complacent and not voting or splitting votes as that’s dangerous if you want your guy to win. It’s getting down to crunch time and time to vote only for your favorite. I learned that in season 5 as I and some other Taylor fans wanted to keep Elliott in the contest and came close in the finale three to having Taylor out. Heck I even threw Daughtry a few votes earlier on (what was I thinking). I’m just saying don’t be too sure your favorite is safe and doesn’t need your votes.

  • lavender1960

Now here is my question, forgive me I cannot remember, but I take it 19 has the right of first refusal on all the contestants, so say for example, Adam was the runner up, not looking like it but let’s say he was the runner up and considered a hot property by a large portion of the industry, he can’t set off a bidding war. In other words AI ensures a return on their investment in the show. Is it just an indisputable fact that 19 is the only game in town for a new artist? Given that say Katy Perry didn’t need no stinking American Idol or 19 Entertainment. Just saying.

  • Miss Chaos

Jesse McCartney used to be on the Soap Opera All My Children when he was young, playing a son of Adam Chandler. He was very good. He left the show as a young teenager, and started into the music business. He has written many good songs, and I think Bleeding Love, please correct me if I am wrong on that.

  • lavender1960

Having seen another artist sell well on iTunes during a different reality show, No. 1 in fact, for a few weeks, and seeing the numbers of his band’s first album, not pretty, popularity on iTunes while you are on TV, shows potential but a lot of TV viewers are not music fans per se but just caught up in the drama of the show. They are more fans of the show than the individual artists per se.

When the show is off the air, out of sight out of mind and when the next Idol season begins, they are moving onto the new faves. Which is why Archie and Cook were killing themselves to get that album out in November.

Otherwise, given his iTunes popularity, David Cook should have sold 5 – 10 million albums by now if everyone who voted for him bought his album or even a portion of those peeps, n’est-ce pas?

I mean I’ve watched the show on and off since it started – loved it Season 1 and 2, I was meh about Seasons 3 – 6, got drawn back in Season 7.

I have not bought one single album put out by any single Idol contestant. Do I get slapped now? I did however download a few songs from iTunes, last season.

I will break the drought this year, and buy an album from an Idol contestant and I might pick up a Kelly Clarkson album one day but that’ll likely be it. And I have the first and will buy the second album of another reality show contestant, Suzie McNeil.

I am a music fan per se, I buy a fair amount of music. But for me it does tend to be out of sight out of mind and I’ll save my pennies to get that James Morrison album, or the Killers or Blue October.

How many Idol viewers are like me?

  • zs

…This further confirms the superficial talk and use of the judges SAVE. Clearly Simon and PTB had this data available to them. I see no particular use of the save other than to indulge their vicarious liking for Matt over Anoop. Even an idiot can see Matt was not in the sales league of the front runner Adam, nor was he a stellar seller compared to the other remaining contestants. May this spell the curse of the Anoop-ino and let all of Simon’s new ventures fail miserably while letting Anoop on the rise.

  • Tess

Since I’m a Youtube freak I watch the numbers for the Studio Versions that are uploaded. Adam not only leads every week in numbers of views, but sometimes as many as 20 different people upload the same song. So we get two different kinds of voters here…those that visit Itunes so that they can listen on their Ipods (etc) and those that “watch” Youtube because they spend all their time on the computer and its free. I wish I had the patience to add up all the views for every studio version for every contestant to really see the relevant numbers….but alas I’d rather be reading MJs.

  • cay

I think the longer you stay in the competition, the better for your career. So, one wouldn’t need to save Matt only if you think he could win. Really, both finalists we know will get recording contracts and the same opportunities.

There’s always room for upsets. Adam has to deal with fan complacency and his fan’s too high expectations. These are real issues for Adam. Also, you never know who fans of voted off contestants will flock to. Kris could be taking some of Danny fans. Who knows.

Nobody knows if any of the contestants will be successful, or really even what kind of album they will put out (since it’s never what people expect). We just have to go on potential and possibilities. And Matt has potential. And the further you go in the competition, the more chances he has to show his potential and get some contract.

I don’t know why people get worked up thinking there is only one person who “wins”. Every year, multiple people get amazing opportunities. Multiple people get recording contracts. There’s room for multiple Idols to have success this year.

  • Michelle

Well, it looks like the popularity bars are disappearing. They’re missing from most of the iMixes that were showing them earlier today.

  • cookcricket

I’m thrilled that Kris is doing so well! My dream come true is that he knocks Danny out of the top 2 and gets a record deal!

However, I would have some requests. The main one is, do not overproduce this boy!!! Simple is absolutely best for Kris. Could there be an actual idol (19) first, a full/ or mostly acoustic album?

I think it would be so cool that their top 2 albums would be polar opposites. (tm simon). Because yeah, my assumption is that Adam will win it all!

I’m like you sort of……….they’re not out of sight for me when Idols is over, I still look out for any releases, but stick to buying my regulars..The thing is when they do release the singles I buy based on what they put out…..I liked Cook, but none of his singles impressed me, so I wont buy simply because I am a fan..if it doesnt cut it for me…I WONT BUY IT. I liked Archie, but I’m not buying any of that fluff either. Huge Jason Castro fan..if his releases coming up dont cut it, I wont buy them either. That’s how I roll, and I suspect that’s how most of the casual viewers/general buying public roll in the real world also.

So you never know who will do well or not post idol…it will all depend on the quality of the material they put out. Remove a few overinvested fans, who would buy it regardless, it can go either way.

I have some numbers but I also count the videos for live performances as well. I use viralvideochart.com to check if anyone seeded their videos before TPTB took them down on youtube. I take the sum of the 5 most popular videos for each performance.

It’s not conclusive at all. The Top 10 videos (excludes semifinals and wildcard) are:

    Mad World Adam Lambert 2,512,003
Black Or White Adam Lambert 1,412,753
The Tracks Of My Tears Adam Lambert 1,359,130
Ring Of Fire Adam Lambert 1,187,829
Play That Funky Music Adam Lambert 386,063
Born To Be Wild Adam Lambert 374,341
Always On My Mind Anoop Desai 246,342
P.Y.T (Pretty Young Thing) Danny Gokey 240,182
What Hurts The Most Danny Gokey 210,259
Papa Was A Rolling Stone Allison Iraheta 202,944

On average view per performance, the Top 13 would rank like this.

    1 Adam Lambert 1,042,306
    2 Danny Gokey 192,767
    3 Megan Joy 151,147
    4 Kris Allen 142,308
    5 Allison Iraheta 139,111
    6 Anoop Desai 108,656
    7 Matt Giraud 91,049
    8 Alexis Grace 82,162
    9 Jorge Nunez 57,958
    10 Scott MacIntyre 39,946
    11 Lil Rounds 39,727
    12 Jasmine Murray 21,044
    13 Michael Sarver 8,217

As you can see, there are anomalies happening. So don’t read too much into it.
Also videos that were not seeded and were removed by TPTB are gone. We can’t capture their data which skews this ranking a lot.

Who else thinks that itunes made “idiotic move of the year award” when they made songs cost 1.29?

do artists get to chose what their songs are worth because i dont think its a smart move.
if there .99 more people will buy them= more chances to make your singles platinum etc…

why would anyone buy a song on itunes when you could buy the same one on itunes for almost 30% lower price????

except for an american idol download (thats why i think AI downloads are going to go up up up in the charts!)

Oh and it makes me wonder what would happen if the only way to vote was to buy the song? if its not worth your .99 cents now, is it gonna be worth your .99 later???

The only one that I want to sign is the kid. Kara and Randy are, obviously, ready to “make a record”. They aren’t kidding. They have been drooling over the child for weeks, and I am sure they are conjuring up a plan to make a deal.

Gokey: definitely a flash in the pan; maybe a one CD wonder. Kris Allen: singer, songwriter, musician; maybe 2 CD’s, but more potential (as in money) as a songwriter. Matt: keeps on keeping on. No CD’s, but no worries.

Adam: I can’t quite put together a long term package for him. I would definitely want a shot at his first CD, tour, but someone already has that and won’t give it up.

OH- here is a little piece that may add to you insight as to Allison’s character. I never go with a “gut feeling”, but instead do what I can to get a little insight.

Hardly. Blake outsold Jordin in terms of in-season downloads. How’d that turn out for him in the end? As others have stated, there is an out-of-sight/out-of-mind factor that goes along with the Idol-spawned “artists”. And also, the ones that perform the most interesting and appealing music while on the show tend to move the most downloads.

But, it’s not predictive of what will happen in the real world. However, I’m sure all the Glamberts will passionately try to convince themselves (not to mention, the rest of us, ad nauseam) otherwise.

Fair point. As much as many people are enthralled by Adam (me included), I do not think he will be the AI success that Carrie/Kelly turned out to be. I do not see any long-term star potential in any of the remaining 5 other than probably Allison. But I am totally against any 16 year old be put through the arduous demands of winning AI (one look at archie and i cannot help but feel for all the misses he has had be it playing games or just plain old hanging out w/friends and all that that comes with just being a kid – yuck!), so I do not hope for her to win this. Kris seems so laid back that he will potentially benefit from anything that will come out of this, not so much for AI. He seems their best bet now and ideally their dream contestant to sign up and work with, so I am gearing up for more standing O-s from the judges for Kris, just to upset the clear status of Adam.

But seeing how conceited and self-indulgent the AI PTB have been, it will be just fitting for Adam to win. I care less if he will make a small dent in AI’s $8Billion pocketbook.

Hardly. Blake outsold Jordin in terms of in-season downloads. Howà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d that turn out for him in the end?

Excuse me while I laugh hysterically. I think Blake’s demise had mostly to do with him being a PR nightmare and the fact that his talent was no where near the size of his ego. But that’s been debated to death so I’ll leave it at that.

Oh but one fact needs to be cleared up – Season 7 was the first time the songs ended up on ITunes for sale during the Season. During Season 6 they were being sold on the official AI websites, and as I recall, ALL of the Idols sales numbers were pretty craptasic.

Nevertheless, Blake’s AI performances still outsold hers significantly. It diddn’t translate over to the real world. So we can infer NOTHING about Adam’s commercial potential based on his Itunes figures.

I see that potential in Allison, Adam, and Kris. And Danny in CCM. I think those four will have musical careers worth noting.

You can’t judge a contestant’s popularity strictly by itunes downloads. According to a recent LA Times article, the median age of Idol viewers is 42.9 Being close to that age myself, I can speak for many. I’m still in mourning over the loss of Tower Records and am stuck on chapter one of Downloading Music For Dummies. I do not have an ipod. I see them as the 21st century version of the Sony Walkman. I have one of those gathering dust in a drawer. I think many of Idol’s viewers, like me, enjoyed seeing Thelma Houston last week and are pulling out our Disco Fever cd compilations – not downloading Danny Gokey’s latest performance. Adam’s fans are more techo-savvy I’d guess.
