I really think Katy Stevens is going to win AI this year. I was so sure she was going to make the Top 24.
She is probably the girl Randy is talking about who is going to win this season. JMHO.

  • gangreen29

Yay, Im glad Michelle is in the top 24, she has such a nice voice, and is so beautiful. The girls certainly look great this year, thank god.

  • Mark

I really think Katy Stevens is going to win AI this year. I was so sure she was going to make the Top 24.
She is probably the girl Randy is talking about who is going to win this season. JMHO.

Yeah, and you know? Randy needs to take a flying leap just about now.

Having said that, I like Katie. Hope she does well.

  • BootStar

Yay, Ben Honeycutt!!! Just posted in the earlier thread about him. And yay, Tyler and Bosa. Two of my favorites from the audition episodes. Did Vanessa Wolfe make it? Got my fingers crossed.

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

Oh I hope TPDB are smart enough to make sure that a girl wins this season. I like Michelle and Katie.

  • JJ123

Very cool news about Katy and Tyler, I really liked both their auditions! Has there been any news about the few other buzzed about ones…..Justin (cancer guy), Luke Shaffer, Ashley??…. I know their names haven’t been on the made it list yet but does anyone know if they got cut?

  • Mark

Oh I hope TPDB are smart enough to make sure that a girl wins this season. I like Michelle and Katie.

Heh. I hope that the TPTB are smart enough to let the performer who performed well enough and is the most liked win. Shocking concept, I know.

  • MalwareDie

I hope TPDB are intelligent enough to kick Tyler Grady out and not try and attract droves of teen and tween girls to the show just like they did with Justin Guarini. Tyler thus far has shown that he’s a near carbon copy of the IMO, very overrated Justin Guarini of Season 1.

  • JJ123

Heh. I hope that the TPTB are smart enough to let the performer who performed well enough and is the most liked win. Shocking concept, I know

I know!! I hate that they predict a girl when they haven’t even entered the voting rounds yet….anything can happen!! That’s why Kris winning was so thrilling, it threw a wrench in all their “expertise” haha.

  • chessguy99

Not feeling Katy as anything more than Top 24 cannon fodder. Her youtube stuff shows she pretty much a good voice that needs direction, not exactly the type of teen girl that does well on the show. Previous teen girls who have made it out of the semis, entered the process with extensive training and performance experience. Unless she’s hiding all the evidence of her experience, I think she’s semi-final cannon fodder. I see her as the final girl that doesn’t make the Top 12.

Michelle has the voice and looks, but I wonder about her performance skills. There is nothing but church related singing clips of her. Chain of Fools is not a challenging song, I’d like to hear something current before I decide if she’s TCO material.

Here’s a new list of cuts:

Plus, it appears that Michael Castro may not be cut…

New cuts: (Cut before Top 50)

    Kimberly Carver
    Jennifer Hersch
    Kat Nestel
    Shannon Anne Marie Turner
    Colin Benward
    Kellye Vetter
    Lucy Yeghiazaryan

  • sonyab

Katie Stevens yay! :) She is one of my favorites. I am still waiting for Amedeo DiRocco! I hope he makes it. Love him!

  • auntieaimee

Tyler thus far has shown that he’s a near carbon copy of the IMO, very overrated Justin Guarini of Season 1.

I’m not getting that impression from him at all. He’s definitely not like him in a musical sense, if you listen to his pre-Idol stuff. His influences seem quite different (The Doors, The Who, The Band, etc). I don’t think Tyler is going to win, but he’s interesting. I like him.

  • washpd

Oh, Jennifer Hersch getting cut is disappointing. I loved her audition.

  • http://www.youtube.com/hotelangel hotelangel

Glad to see Ben Honeycutt through.
I watched his videos on youtube, and he was GREAT!

  • MawMaw

To me Katy has that Taylor Swift/Miley Cyrus vibe about her. Since that seems to be what the public is supporting right now, it makes sense to put her in the top 24. I looked for TPTB to put several girls thru that fit that description and maybe a male country singer as well.

Sad to see Colin Benward on the cut list. I liked some of his videos I’ve seen.

  • J9BT

Plus, it appears that Michael Castro may not be cut…

MJ – that’s interesting. After reading your comment I visited Joe’s place and noticed the “got cut” comment removed from his write-up.

Was there commentary anywhere explaining anything about this change in status? I did notice Michael tweeting about mid-week after a hiatus since last weekend, so I figured his getting cut was the reason why he was back on twitter. Are contestants allowed to tweet during Hollywood week? I’m not familiar with the rules.

  • chearts77

MawMaw, your Taylor Swift/Miley Cyrus vibe you get about Katie…is it because they are teens? Katie’s personality may be more in line with Taylor’s. Musically, Katie can sing circles around both of them. I love Katie’s strong voice. Wonder what type of music she would put out?

  • MawMaw

chearts, yes it probably is her age as much as anything. Also, there’s a video of her singing The Climb. I completely agree she’s a much better singer. I about get whiplash changing my radio station every time I hear either Taylor or Miley and I wouldn’t with Katie. LOL

  • gleekester

thanks MJ for the shout out there.
I really like Katie and Michelle. I feel Katie has bubbly and sweet personality, and could go the taylor swift route b/c I feel her voice is well suited for country/pop. For Michelle , I absolutely love her, I feel her voice will be well suited for Leona Lewis/early Mariah Carey type material.

  • Sassycatz

Plus, it appears that Michael Castro may not be cut…

Don’t worry. If he gets through to the Top 24, the public will take care of it soon enough.

Also, Michelle looks like Leona so I’m not surprised she got through.

  • googletot

I’m happy to see Ben in the top 24 – like him the most so far and not particularly fond of female singers.

  • Adamdebomb

Michelle is spectacular-the whole package-! Katie is good on a high school level. No news is good news about my boy Jonathan Stills….

  • Kirsten

I’m happy to see Ben in the top 24 – like him the most so far and not particularly fond of female singers.

I’ve only seen spoilers that he’s in the top 48.

Not surprised to see Todrick cut after seeing some of those news articles linking him to defrauding kids. I don’t know if he really did it, but you’re never going to survive Idol with those kind of things floating around.

  • erennick

As far as a girl winning, I’m predicting Mallory to do well.

  • HannaB4

I don’t understand the Michael Castro hatred from a some people here. I really like his voice and the way he interprets songs. He’s put a lot of time and energy into his music since last year. Guess it’s a matter of different musical taste. :)

  • gingerly

I have no Michael Castro hatred at all. I just don’t think his singing warrants love. I’m not upset at all that he’s gone. I don’t hate him however. That takes too much energy. It’s all opinion after all. I’ve actually not mentioned him til now, but I don’t let myself care much about any of them until top 12 or 10.

  • OhMyRawrrr

Yay Tyler! Nice deep voice – AI has a shortage of these voices.

  • Justin8602

Has anyone heard anything about Vanessa Wolf? The super country girl from Tennessee? I kind of hope she makes it through, although I’m not a huge country music fan, she has a good niche voice, very Loretta Lynn.

  • leome

Tyler thus far has shown that he’s a near carbon copy of the IMO, very overrated Justin Guarini of Season 1.

Just because they have a similar hair style it doesn’t mean Tyler is a copy of Justin. Their voices are really different and so are their styles, I can’t even see what one has to do with the other.
This reminds me of last year when people would compare Matt with Justin Timberlake, just cause they sort of looked alike. His music was nothign like Justin’s, but people would still say he was in Justin’s genre.

  • Yui

Yay I love Katie. her voice is so soothing and nice.
    Ben seems pretty good too.
    and Tyler is attractive. lol

*btw mj i think u need to correct her name its ‘Katie’ not ‘Katy’ according to her youtube vids

  • lifeisfun

Im glad to see there are a lot of Ben Honeycutt fans!!! i really hope he makes it *fingers crossed

if you’ve seen all his youtube videos and love them (BootStar, hotelangel): he’s in the band candlefuse and their albums are on itunes. I recommend “diamonds and pearls” and “shine” from their EP

  • BM2587

If that Mallory girl can make it into the top 24 I think she will end up winning. Katie has a nice little voice but nothin really special about her.

  • http://myspace.com/morganmadelynne marymagdalene

I would LOVE it if Katie Stevens made it to at least the Top 24, if not Top 12.

Or even better, Top 10, as she is from CT, and I would LOVE to see CT finally represented on the Tour! Especially since that is where I live… :-D

  • erennick

CT had Julia Demato season 2. She was the one who had the fight with Kim Caldwell. She finished 9th, I think.

  • anovich

That’s why Kris winning was so thrilling, it threw a wrench in all their “expertise” haha.

Except it kept the prediction of a guy winning, though I’m sure that guy was supposed to be either Danny or Adam.

  • http://idolstages.com Connie D.

Hoping Michael Castro is not cut.

He has been working hard every day for a year, taking voice and piano lessons to improve his musicianship. Well, except for week before last, according to his tweets. He was quite ill.

Michael is a good kid, and I really enjoy his song interpretations. I just wish he would put some color where the white streak is in his hair.

  • Niall

I like Katie Stevens but I also expect her to flame out in the Top 24. She’s just so young and doesn’t seem to have a ton of high level performing experience.

All Michael Castro has going for him is a weird hairstyle and being the brother of a former contestant. Vocally he’s nothing special. If his name was Michael Johnson he never would have made it to Hollywood.

Right now I don’t see any shoo ins for the Top 12. Mostly because every year people who wow us in Hollywood fall apart when the live shows start.

  • SexyEvey

I like Katie Stevens so that is great news. Her + Ashley = Perfect!

  • karenc

I live in CT too, and I was hoping Katie Stevens would make it through. They did a story about her on the local Fox affiliate ( Fox61) the other night. They interviewed some some teachers and I think the principal as well as some students. They said she has done numerous plays and is an excellent singer, and plays guitar and piano. They showed a bit of one of the plays in which she was the lead. So, hopefully she’ll do well if she makes it through.

I liked Tyler Grady too, if he is the one I think he is ( broken arm guy?) . He seemed like a cross between Jim Morrison and Chris Robinson to me.

Has anyone said anything about Jamar Rodgers? I think he had auditioned again and was hoping he makes it through this time.

  • certain1

    Re: Jamar Rodgers

Per a interview Danny did when he was back home last week Jamar decided after 3 tries to give up the game and is now in New York pursuing his own music.

  • Mark

CT had Julia Demato season 2. She was the one who had the fight with Kim Caldwell. She finished 9th, I think.

That’s not exactly the representation one might hope for, though…

  • MusicAlltheTime

Not surprised to see Todrick cut after seeing some of those news articles linking him to defrauding kids. I don’t know if he really did it, but you’re never going to survive Idol with those kind of things floating around.

Oh, he really ripped people off alright.

  • gangreen29

Tyler Grady supposedly made the top 24, as well as some guy named John Park!

  • OhMyRawrrr

Yay Tyler! So, I clicked on a Ben Honeycutt you tube link I saw somewhere – Use Somebody – and he sounded so good I actually listened to the whole thing! :D Great voice! Me likey.

John Park was the Asian guy from Northwestern’s glee club.

My top 2 are in the Top 24. Hell yes.

Tyler Grady and Katie Stevens. Although I do picture myself moving on to someone else.

  • Yui

oooh looks like John Park is an Asian. Korean most likely.
too bad theres no solo song feature or close up picture of him tho. but I would personally love to see an Asian go far :D

So… John Park. I am all in favor of Asian-American males being successful on this show, especially considering we’re prone to get the William Hung/Paul Kim treatment.

But let’s see here… interesting voice, this one has. Deep, operatic-sounding, and his group does pick interesting songs. Since the videos I saw were in the context of a group, I’m not sure how much his own musical imagination is going to hold up, but it’s at least vaguely promising. I wonder what kind of style he’s going to try and sell on the show, though…

  • http://idolbert.wordpress.com/ Art

I’m starting the countdown to “Tyler Grady is the new Jim Morrison” right now.

I’m with you, HannaB4. I actually love Michael Castro’s voice. I’m impressed with the music he has on his myspace page. I also know he’s been writing music – not just for himself but for his little sister Jackie. He is a different person from his brother Jason, both in look and personality, but IMO he has a good voice and is hard working. Who knows if he made it to the Top 24 or not – I’m guessing not since he’s been tweeting since mid-week – but I do like him and will be watching to see what he does with his career.

  • smartcookie

Was Tyler Grady the one with the broken wrists?

  • Kirsten

Since the videos I saw were in the context of a group, I’m not sure how much his own musical imagination is going to hold up, but it’s at least vaguely promising.

On the youtube for “Coming Home”, it states that John Park is the arranger (and soloist).

  • Mark

On the youtube for “Coming Home”, it states that John Park is the arranger (and soloist).

Ah! Good catch. Make that very promising, then.

  • jmaster

According to IDF spoilers, Charity Vance also made the top 24.

  • ilovekrisallen39

I think that Was Tyler that broke his wrist falling out of a tree I think he said. I really liked him my husband liked him alot too. And his not much of an Idol fan. Even thou he well watch this part of the show. He also liked a couple of the girls..

  • Yui

ooh thanks. He’s definitely the most attractive Asian guy they’ve ever had on AI (though there were really like only two others…)

So… John Parks. I am all in favor of Asian-American males being successful on this show, especially considering we’re prone to get the William Hung/Paul Kim treatment.

yeah I agree with you. His style seems interesting enough. need to see some solo stuff but all for some Asian representations. Especially asian males because honestly they get the worst media stereotyping.
Nerds, Kong Fu Master…. need i say more/

I’m starting the countdown to “Tyler Grady is the new Jim Morrison” right now.

no, no, no. It’s “Tyler Grady is BETTER than Jim Morrison and will soon be a worldwide superstar.” You must be new around here, LOL. ;-)

Grady and Golightly won’t both make the top 12 but we’re doomed to at least one skinny, Guarini lookalike.

  • jmaster

Correction: Charity Vance did not make top 24.

  • http://myspace.com hgzaj

So weird… last year (and all the other years) they showed the auditions AFTER the chair episode, correct? Then we’d notice those in the top 24 were people whose auditions we actually saw a lot of.

Now they are doing the chair eps AFTER the auditions are already edited. Yet we still notice people in the top 24 are people whose auditions were “heavily pimped”

seems a bit weird to me…

  • Lisa

    hgzaj
The auditions have always been shown first. Then hollywood week, then the chair episode :)

  • OhMyRawrrr

I don’t get the Tyler/Guarini resemblance, aside from they both have mops of hair on their head, but considering I love Justin and Tyler’s got a nice voice from what I’ve heard so far, I’m happy :D

  • Yui

I guess Tyler and Guarini are both pretty boys. but personally Tyler looks more modelly- abercrombie? to me. I think hes attractive. not exactly my style in music tho. but we’ll see as we see him sing more on idol.

  • Mark

The auditions have always been shown first. Then hollywood week, then the chair episode :)

No, no, no, that wasn’t what hgzaj (what is the gender of a hgzaj, anyway?). He/she/it meant in terms of the auditions being shown after the chair episode had been filmed. Before I edited this comment, I said that this was a first; I take that back. I’m not sure how far out it actually is. But I had the sense it occurred before the audition episodes aired.

And it’ll be interesting to see the pimp piece rate getting into the Top 24 in those episodes versus the next ones, and see what implications one might draw from that. Anyone have a sense of how long before an episode the editing occurs?

  • SexyEvey

If you want to know more about Ashley, I built a fansite for her. Dont worry, Mj’s link is on my blog roll lol. She will always be the HBIC =)
    http://www.ashleymakailah.com

  • chessguy99

Now they are doing the chair eps AFTER the auditions are already edited. Yet we still notice people in the top 24 are people whose auditions were “heavily pimped”

seems a bit weird to me…

If you believe the Top 24 is actually picked after the final Hollywood audition round, it would seem weird. I’ve always thought they went into Hollywood week with Top 24 set, with a couple of stand by picks in case a serious problem arose. It is a television show and they need to cast it with an eye on maintaining their audience numbers throughout the season.

  • Yui

oh excited about Ashley too!!! shes so pretty
but ‘Orphan?’ made it? why?? …

  • Mark

Of course, I should note that it might not be unexpected for the producers to be able to have some notion of, say, the best few auditions coming out of a city, and use those. That shouldn’t be wildly impossible. And if the person had a really good audition in the mind of the show, they probably do have a significantly better shot of at least doing well enough in Hollywood week, if not the best per se.

Still, Leah Laurenti got cut, and she did get the pimp spot in her respective episode. The premiere, of all things. So I’m not sure how infallible a system it is, anyway.

  • chearts77

Joes Place has added Ben Honeycutt to the top 24 list. I hope I’m allowed to say that here. Not sure how to link either. *blush*

I guess it’s no shock that I read the spoilers even though I’m not sure I want to… since I also sometimes can’t stand the suspense and peek at the end of stories I’m reading? Heh.

Im liking quite a few of these contestants. :)

Why, hello, Ben Honeycutt, Kris Allen and David Cook’s sekrit lovechild. The road is set for Shock Win #3. Gotta be careful of those unassuming boys with guitars.

You know, I’ve read a few comments about Tyler being good looking. Plus Randy and Simon we’re teasing the female judges about “liking” tyler.
I don’t get it. I found him really goofy looking – like really. But then he sang and I really liked it, plus I think he showed some charisma. But good looking? I’m not seeing it. But hey, AI tends to make everyone better looking, so I will wait and see. :)

The first time I saw Cook was when they were performing for votes for the first time. Was that daydream believer? I had this instantaneous loathing for him. I thought he was goofy looking and sounded like shit. Didn’t understand why the judges liked him. Wanted him OFF my tv. Then little by little he started to impress the hell out of me (started with Hello), then Billie Jean blew me away :D I had a complete turnaround during the season and David Cook became my first and only favorite that actually won! ETA: And yeah, he got cuter and cuter as the season wore on ;)

Looking forward to seeing what Ben Honeycutt and Tyler Grady are going to do…I don’t care what Idol wants this year, I like my rock/pop-rock/singer-songwriter boys. :)

  • melirose89

OH GOD, how much do you wanna bet there’s gonna be a Tyler Grady/Ben Honeycutt ship name. i have a weird feeling fans are gonna make them into these new bffs or something.

Personally i dont find anything original about either one of them at this point. Ben is like another Kris, Tyler is like a Bo Bice/Constantine hybrid.

LOL. If they are buddies, look out. Tyben… Benler… HoneyTy? Snort.

  • gleekester

Yay, I am so happy that Ashely made the top 24 she is one of favs. I have a hunch that season 9 is going best season to date, I feel it is forming up to be like season 5 and season 7 in which the contestants were superb vocally.

  • jammasta

Tyler is very strange looking to me. Adore him anyway. I like that goofy smile he did whenever the judges complimented him. I hope he’s on the tour.

Ben Honeycutt grew out of his older stupid hairstyle, he certainly looks older and more “clean”, hopefully that’s a sign of a more mature style? I mean, I loved what he did on Youtube, would be awesome to see how he grows.

I think I’ll like this top 24. Nobody mind-blowingly amazing yet (at least for me, we’ve hardly ever seen them sing a second time), but we’ll find one of them in time.

I also really like Michelle and Ashley, I think they’re good R&B types. Katie and Jermaine are great too.

Have to see more of John and Chris (although for Chris, not liking it so much).

Wonder who my girly mancrush will be this year >_> (I usually go for the clean looking, humble, nice guy like Kris/Archie). And hopefully some female crushes, last year was a sausagefest. Hopefully season 9 has a better bunch of women like season 7, and, at the risk of sounding like a shallow man, some beautiful women singers X_X.

  • MalwareDie

jammasta, I think you’ll be very happen when Mallorie is announced as part of the Top 24.

jammasta, I think you’ll be very happen when Mallorie is announced as part of the Top 24.

Please tell me you’re for real. She’s a HOTTIE!

…oh and she can sing, too. Very well, I like her style. She’s really good.

Just a random thought since I’m not sure if Vanessa Wolfe made it. I don’t like her style of singing very much, but I think she’ll be a very interesting addition to the top 24 if she gets there. As her audition interview shows, she has a really great personality, she could add some fun to the show. I like her.

  • isisdagmar

That’s interesting–a friend of mine who goes to Northwestern and is in Purple Haze is in those videos of that guy.

I like Ben’s voice. Based on his Use Somebody cover, at least.

  • sbalk017

I love Ben Honeycutt… but mostly cause he’s incredibly cute and covered “Use Somebody.” I’m suprised… I like alot of the top 24 so far. I’m really hoping for one girl with an out-of-the-park kind of voice (country, pop, rock, doesn’t really matter…) to suprise us.

  • carmine2008

After watching Ben Honeycutt’s youtube videos, I think he’s my favorite so far. I’m going to stick with the WBWG prototype. It has won for 2 successive years so far. Hopefully, this year will make it 3.

Another interesting thing is that on his youtube page, Ben covered 3 songs that Kris Allen has covered previously: Ain’t No Sunshine, Man in the Mirror and Apologize. By watching those you can definitely tell that the two of them are different in styles as far as singing and arranging are concerned. I like Kris’ versions better though.

alright, being a girl i love boys and all, but i am so sick of the “white boy with a guitar” stereotypical idol contestant. it is sooo boring and i find nothing attractive or distinctive about the voices of either ben honeycutt or david cook. i would rather there be a contestant like adam whose nitch is just singing, but who can sing their face off and have some star quality. i am actually hoping a girl will win this year, but if it is a boy please don’t let it be white boy with a guitar again, please! also i think it’s time for a girl who isn’t r&b or country to win. i think katie stevens is pretty good from her youtube videos.

  • carmine2008

It’s a matter of preference, I think. Before David Cook it was pretty much what you had described as “contestant like adam whose niche (I corrected the spelling for you, couldn’t resist, sorry) is just singing”. I actually found it refreshing to finally have a winner who had musical abilities other than just singing. YMMV, of course.

  • glamfan

oh yeah, sorry, “niche.” it’s late. yeah maybe the first time it was refreshing, but if it happens a 3rd year in a row i will have lost faith in america’s creativity.

  • carmine2008

Hahaha. Actually, I see your point. But, I do think David Cook, Kris Allen and Ben Honeycutt are all different artists (it’s just that they all play the guitar). So, for me, it’s really not rehashing of entirely similar things.

  • Joanna S.

Really, REALLY happy about Ben! He’s my absolute favorite so far, and he’s creating so much buzz even though his audition wasn’t shown at all. I really hope he’ll be in it for the long haul. He could have quite the fanbase by the time the voting rounds start. Even though TPTB are pushing for a girl to win, it would not surprise me at all if it backfires on them. We could even have a Top 10 with 6 boys and 4 girls.

  • primeminister

So… John Park. I am all in favor of Asian-American males being successful on this show, especially considering we’re prone to get the William Hung/Paul Kim treatment.

Well, as long as John Park doesn’t declare he’s ditching his shoes for the entirety of the competition, I think he’ll be okay. :)

  • Adamdebomb

The girl named Ashley (from Puerto Rico but “I do not speak spanish”) has a wonderful personality. Still waiting to see about our Rochester entrant-Jon Stills…hope is growing dimmer I guess, but unlike most of them Jon doesn’t have a huge list of credits and professional experience. He sang the national anthem for my daughter’s swim meet!

  • glamfan

i just watched the golden ticket interviews on the AI site. ashley rodriguez definitely had the best interview- she didn’t sound awkward at all and didn’t ramble or lose my interest. also her audition was amazing of course. so i think she could definitely be in the top 10, if not top 3, from what we’ve seen so far.

  • Banished

I really don’t think people who JUST sing stand much of a chance on this show anymore. It may be sad, but unless you can also perform like Adam, those who only sing seem boring compared to those who play instruments. Not prejudiced against a woman winning, but honestly would rather a David Cook or Kris Allen win than a Kat or Jordin. The only female I thought was decent on this show (didn’t see season one so can’t comment on Kelly) was Carrie…

  • manny

Liking Lee DeWyse, very Daughtryesque. Lacey Brown is so adorable, I hope she goes far. All in all so far this crew looks super talented.

  • EmmaCT

  • glamfan

of course by JUST singing, i mean someone who is the total package- who can bring something interesting to their performance each time like adam with stage presence, but whose greatest talent is very obviously singing, not playing an instrument. because it IS a singing competition. i have nothing against multi-talented people, i myself play several instruments, but sometimes instruments take away from the fact that their vocals are nothing special or they seem lost without their instrument. one of my favorite quotes from adam is “my voice is my instrument.”

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

Well, I personally like Jordin Sparks more than David Cook and Kris Allen combined.

I don’t know, I just don’t like contestants who play instruments as much as contestants who only sing. Well, I liked David Archuleta, but I think he only played piano once on the show. Same with Allison – I prefer her without guitar.

I just want season 9 winner to be completely different from the last two winners. Different appearance, different voice, different genre.

  • sonyab

I’m still waiting for Amedeo DiRocco!!

  • shell29

Happy to see a bit more diversity in this Top 24 so far. My money’s on Ashley to go far and possibly win the whole shebang. There won’t be another WBWG winner this year, not after Cook and Kris (although based on the pre-Top 24 fantarding I’m seeing so far, I think Ben Honeycutt could go far).

Not feelin’ Chris “Orphan” Golightly based on his myspace songs. Don’t like his sound at all, but maybe he’ll win me over during the semis. I really hope John Park doesn’t flame out like Paul Kim did. I would love to see an Asian guy go deep in this competition. Really like what I’ve heard of Andrew Garcia. I’ve been fantarding a bit over Jess Wolfe, but I don’t hold out much hope on her making Top 24.

  • Lexus

I’m really happy to see Jermaine Seller’s name there. I like his sound, his personality. He, Katie, Luke and Ben are my favorites so far.

I’m curious about Vanessa too. I really hope she catches her break. She seems like a sweetheart with a unique set of pipes.

  • Kirsten

    That’s, ahem, unfortunate…

Yes. Some people ruin a name for everybody else. I used to know a guy named Bill Gates. He received a LOT of angry phone calls. Like Bill Gates would live in this city and list his name in the phone book. This guy probably should have just gone by Gates, B in the phone book too.

Anyway, this David Duke goes by D. Duke and he’s African-American, but there willl still probably be some confusion.

So, let’s see, just from looking at the names, we have a character from M*A*S*H, a white supremist, the grandson of Holly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s (dude just has to sing Moon River), a 53 year old Cuban-American actor and Adam’s younger brother. This could get exciting.

Strangely, all the fun names are from the men’s side.

I disagree. After all, most people who watched the show judged the idols based on their singing. The instrument playing was just a nice little bonus to supplement it.

BTW, if this is truly just singing contest and that playing instruments is just a “distraction” then “stage presence” or “the moving around on stage” or whatever-other-category shouldn’t be a valid criteria either.

As I said, it’s all about preference. I like people who can sing who can also play instruments. Other people like people who can dance or command the entire stage. Neither should be dismissed as a means to hide mediocrity because in the end you can’t hide bad singing (unless it’s lip-synched).

I couldn’t agree more. Introducing instruments was the biggest mistake Idol made. It allows mediocre singers to hide behind their instruments (the only exception to this in my opinion since their introduction being Brooke White). It annoys me as much as pulling out the “singer/songwriter” card when they should really just be giving their songs to people with a voice to do them justice. How many authors and scriptwriters try their luck at acting?

I found this looking back on last year’s SF audition. Sunchick, I hope you are still around because you are a genius. Would like to know what you think is this year’s “plot”. It wasn’t Ryan, but Danny and then Kris, but the story was exactly what you said!

    sunchick
    01/22/2009 at 1:20 pm
Hmmm, I’m callin it early, provided they both make the top twelve….glam-rock guy vs. Christian-rock guy, possible final two, with country dude being an outside bet. Adam can be OTT and sticks out like a sore thumb, which can be good or bad depending who you talk to, and Ryan’s cute with a nice chill voice, and they both seem to have a lot of performance experience. I don’t think I’ve ever watched so many of the auditions before…this should be new and different.

He’s is going to have to tone it down and make it real.
Ah, but some people are born to let their freak flag fly, and some aren’t. Maybe he’s the former. I think I’ll be more disappointed if we never see the crazy (or Crazy, as the case may be.) And Simon’s reaction, of course. Cuz that will be TV gold.

  • carmine2008

I think Miss Chaos is referring to the similarity (in name only) to Adam Lambert.

The only other version that I like of this song other than the original is Kris’ version because he sings it with so much passion. Can’t compare.

  • chessguy99

Just going by internet clips, most of the guys have similarities to one or more of the other guys. Going to be hard for any of them to separate themselves from the pack, musically. Perhaps that is what TPTB were going for in their quest to get a girl to a least the finale.

  • cheese

Holy homogeneous Top 12 Guys! Why even hold auditions – they could have just scoured YouTube for WBWG and pleasant-ish voices. If you stuck Kris up against these guys, he would probably blend right in too. Hopefully they’ll stop with the “OMG original!” praise any time someone plays a song on acoustic guitar.

  • carmine2008

It annoys me as much as pulling out the “singer/songwriter” card when they should really just be giving their songs to people with a voice to do them justice. How many authors and scriptwriters try their luck at acting?

Because a singer/songwriter knows exactly what he/she is singing about because he/she wrote the song. It makes their interpretation more genuine. They are telling their story or their message to the world through their own voice not through someone who has no proper understanding of what they are actually singing about.

BTW, I am not implying in any way that someone who just sings cannot genuinely interpret a song. I’m just expressing the allure of singer/songwriters.

Anyway, it’s too premature to make assumptions so early in the season. We’re not even sure if these updates are even accurate.

  • sweetni4

OMG, this show is still going to be cheesy. Where is the originality? Why can’t we have some Raggae going on here? How about some Kid Rock? Give me a Jay-Z or a Drake. I could go to church and find a better R&B singer than Lil Rounds. Please let’s mix it up with the white boys with guitars.

  • tinydance

  • tierbee

Kara and Randy have mentioned several times I think that this is the “year of the girl” so I’m sure they’ve stacked up a lot of similar boy singers to cancel each other out. We’ll see – sometimes what you see this early on goes right out the window when they get on the stage to sing the first time. I actually kinda find this group intriguing so far, will be interested to see that first performance night.

Yes, but that’s not how it usually works. AI figured out long ago that you have to have supports for the Idol you want to win. Votes tend to transfer from one Idol to another as they get the boot (some voters stop voting, while others vote for their second favourite). When you get so many Idols appealing to a certain type, you tend to bias the audience that way. Sure, a lot of the same types get the boot earlier than they should due to vote splitting, but the lone survivor tends to do better in the end.

I have to say that Alex Lambert and a lot of the other guys do look like cannon fodder. I’ve listened to a lot of music and unless Alex pulled a miracle out of his butt during Hollywood, there are a lot of WGWG that are 100 times better than him based on the youtube evidence. They may be going with casting guys who are clearly outclassed by the women this year (kind of like S6) to ensure the victory. But, who knows? Youtube videos can be deceptive.

Hmm, is this the first time we’ve had a young Asian male in the Top 24? He’s definitely from an unrepresented demographic on Idol.

  • tinydance

I really think Idol wants to break the guy hold on Idol. That is why I think they are trying to place more younger female singers to draw the teens for her like they did with Jordin.

  • tinydance

I would hope that it could happen sometime. I think that would be great if they were a great singer.

Hmm, is this the first time we’ve had a young Asian male in the Top 24?

Previously we had (that I can remember):
    Paul Kim – Season 6
    Bobby Bennett – Season 5
    AJ Tabaldo – Season 6

AJ lasted the longest of the three (Final 20).

I found MJ’s last spring, so this is my first season knowing all these spoilers. I’m curious, are there pros/cons in knowing the outcomes going into the top 24? Does it take away from watching the auditions and Hollywood week? Or do the inside scoops cast the whole process in another light?

  • unique28v

If I’m correct, so far, we have 6 people of color so far. 1 Asian, 2 Hispanic, and 3 Black! Nice!!!

I think the show wants a girl to win this year but I dunno… It’ll depend on the demographic that watches the show this year. Unless none of the guys can sing.

I thought dancing with the stars was going to be a girl’s year, but Donny Osborune won. We shall see!

Also, the guys have some really interesting names this year. It’ll be easier to remember them. lol

Speaking for myself, I think the spoilers add a different aspect to the game and level of interest and investment. With the spoilers I have a tendency to pay more attention to the ones who missed the cut. Those who make it, I know I’ll learn more about them down the road … hopefully.

BTW, I’m glad to see an Asian male in the mix this year. I like diversity.

No word on Mallorie yet, huh? :( I hope she makes it. Is Lacey considered country? Listening to her tubey video posted here, I prefer Mallorie. I guess I’ll have to keep checking back for word.

  • J9BT

The PI work that has been done to develop this list/information is amazing! I find it hard to base an opinion on such limited clips, especially since the “competition” part of AI is so telling, but here is my reaction to a few of the contestants:

*Michelle Delamor – I like her voice and her personality seems great. It’s neat that she’s been a fan of the show since the beginning.

*Tyler Grady – Kiersten – I don’t think he said his wrists were “cut up” (**shudders at the thought**) – I think he had two broken wrists and they were in casts. I liked his voice and presence – confident but not cocky.

*Jermaine Sellers – great voice. Will he get the “Christian” vote this season?

*Alex Lambert – seems like a goofball. Is this a male or female? I couldn’t find a clip where the picture was decent. Sometimes having a sense of humor is viewed by the judges as not taking the competition seriously, so we’ll see. Also, I can see all of the Adam comparisons/questions already – too bad for Alex because he/she can’t hold a candle to Adam.

*Lee DeWyze – sounded exactly like David Cook to me when I closed my eyes. Maybe I didn’t have enough coffee yet.

*Michael Lynche – nice R&B voice.

*Lilly Scott – sounded a bit like Cyndi Lauper to me. Not my style.

there’s two! andrew garcia is filipino (i’m assuming).

but yeah, asian males are generally underrepresented in all aspects of the media. interesting fact: it’s the only demographic the real world has yet to touch in its cast.

Thanks TwigLA. It sure adds another dimension having some background on the auditioners.

me too. the show often lacks it too.

  • anemicandholding

Hmmm, all that “star quality” that Adam Lambert allegedly possesses hasn’t paid off in actual success. Is the goal to get someone who actually sells, or someone that the tabloids love?

Last time I checked, the white boy with the guitar had the first real sales accomplishment of this season, and the previous white boy with guitar had easily outpaced both the “star” (Adam Lambert) and the show’s last female diva (at least in terms of album sales). Maybe that’s what works in today’s day and age, even if 19 has been reluctant to admit it by this point.

  • gangreen29

So Angela Martin was the last cut before the top 24, I think that is going to be painful to watch…..

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

anemicandholding, Kris has a gold single, but Adam is closer to gold album than Kris.

And between David Cook and Jordin Sparks… I think their first album success is quite similar. Both sold over 1 million albums, I think Cook sold 200k or so more than Jordin. However, Jordin’s singles were more successful on the radio and sales wise.

  • Mark

So… hmm. I guess the producers are going for the S6 strategy, then, with the guys. A lot of WBWG; the best of them seems to be Ben. Before, I thought Ben might be, at best, a mid-tier competitor, as I still hold he pales quite a bit to Cook and Kris even from a distance; I take that back by comparison to his peers this season. He’s going to benefit a lot from the other WBWG, but I’m not sure how much the helpful compound effect will be if the other WBWG types aren’t going to perform well by comparison at all. It may be enough to pull him right to the end, though.

The girls are a more incomplete list, but they seem more diverse, but also potentially a lot better. Lily was a pleasant surprise for me; I’m really liking her voice, and her style may also take her places. Still, is any of this enough to counter basic demographic fanbase tendencies? I’m not sure, personally.

  • tierbee

No more WBWG, pleaassee!? How about a BGWG, like Corinne Bailey Rae? How about a BGAP? How about a couple of black guys at all?
Maybe a WGWG who has a Coly Calliet vibe. (OH yeah, she actually tried out BUT DIDN”T MAKE IT!)
If it has to be a WGWG, it needs to be a Keith Urban type>>someone who is country/crossover or a “guy Carrie”.

  • Sassycatz

I, for one, am glad to see the potential for increased musicianship on the whole with this crowd, and the comparative lack of histrionic theater-types (and even Jermaine, at the moment, is bearable, entirely because of his vocal tone). Even if I’m not convinced all of them will do it well, it’s so much better than the S2-type singing which is less interesting for me. Especially coming from someone who might go ballistic on someone who sings either “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” or “Against All Odds”.

  • tierbee

I would like some good R&B guys – however much I love my guitar boys, I love R&B music, too.

  • Kirsten

No more WBWG, pleaassee!? How about a BGWG, like Corinne Bailey Rae?

Check out the new girl Haeley. She’s an African-American Girl With a Guitar.

How about a couple of black guys at all?

A lot of African-American dudes this year. Check out the links. Jermaine, Michael and David. Chris is probably of mixed race. That’s 3 to 4 out of the 10 announced so far. Two of the other males are Asian. Tyler is a drummer (when his wrists aren’t broken). That leaves just 2 WGWG so far and one of them doesn’t seem likely to stick around for long (I haven’t checked out that Lee dude).

  • karenc

I think that Kris’s music fits in well what is currently popular. But, Adam is doing something more experimental musically, and it might not catch on with everyone right away. And I think what happened with FYE hasn’t helped. I think that both are doing well considering they are new artists.

Between David Cook and Jordan, I remember reading that David’s cd went platnum much faster than Jordan’s did, in only 3 or 4 months, where Jordan’s took almost a year to go platnum. In fact, I think they both went platnum around the same time last year. I’m not sure about Jordin’s singles, but I know that TOML was already platnum by this time last year. But I believe Jordin had more singles released also. The other thing is David’s tour was extremely successful, and had the most dates for any Idol winner for a headlining tour. But, both are different types of artists.

eh, who cares as long as they both reached the same endpoint. i’d say without question, jordin’s debut album era was more successful than cook’s in terms of establishing herself outside the idolsphere.

  • tierbee

“i’d say without question, jordin’s debut album era was more successful than cook’s in terms of establishing herself outside the idolsphere”

He hasn’t put his second album out yet – we’ll see.

  • HoldYourOwn

Lilly Scott is interesting…I think I like her voice, but I need to hear more…she sounds kinda like she has a cold in some of those CDBaby snippets. I like her tone though, which is a start for me…I overwhelmingly prefer male voices, for whatever reason. I’m tired of the same-old big voice R&B-type female singers…I don’t like R&B, with very few exceptions. So this girl has my interest.

Hey, speaking of exceptions, Michael Lynche. His style is not normally in my wheelhouse, at all. But, for whatever reason, I really like his ‘Oo La La” video. I think it’s the guitar. Apparently I’m a sucker for acoustic… :P

Oooh, Haeley Vaughn could be interesting too. Need better audio quality than those Myspace videos though.

(Just a little personal aside. I’ve been reading here for a while, but I just joined yesterday. *waves*)

Well If its a girl they want I still hope Vanessa Wolfe somehow magically gets in the top 24. She, to me is what American Idol was originally about. Finding someone who would never have the chance to break into the music scene. Yes I know she is raw and needs a lot of help to get her ready but I truly think she has the raw talent to do it and is worth the work it will take to season her. I love me some Adam and think he is amazing and will support his career for years to come but this girl is/or can be our Susan Boyle with her own unique spin and someone who could be current and relevant. (whatever that suppose to mean. ;-) ). Vanessa is also younger and not tainted they way I think Susan Boyle is to an extent. But that is just my opinion. I really think she will surprise a lot of people if given the chance. IMHO

Although, technically, aren’t most of these contestants just “American” (if we only consider continents and not ethnicity)?

Appreciated, though I’m sure all here were referring to ethnicity (which, of course, is the issue here more than nationality). Even I’ll admit to dropping the “American” suffix quite often in these discussions, but only when I start finding it a little redundant.

  • Mark

And, yeah, speaking of… I don’t know how we forgot Sanjaya. Cripes. (Probably that whole “Please, please, please forget this individual” that goes on through my brain whenever he’s invoked) I had assumed that Ramiele and Jasmine were left off because the original query was about men, was it not?

A lot of Indians don’t self identify as “Asian” though. Most Indians I know self identify as “Indian” whereas the East and Southeast Asians self identify as “Asian.” I think it has to do with a more drastic difference in looks between Indians and other Asians? Anyway, it’d be cool if an Asian or an Indian won, since that would mean some of the stereotypes of nerdy, not sexy, etc are going away a bit.

Well, if it’s true that she was cut, maybe she messed up. Keeping her just for her story would’ve been keeping her for the wrong reasons IMO. I thought she had potential and was hoping she’d be prepared to kill it at Hollywood. But for all we know she was cut for the right reasons (if she was cut).

Yay country people making it through! I wish they were older/ didn’t look so much like Taylor Swift wanna-be’s. I’m sad about Vanessa, she had such a good old-school country voice! I don’t really like Janell though, she’s too pop for a country singer in a Jessica Simpson going country bad way.

I feel bad for Alex Lambert already… I can just see the Glamberts going crazy and accusing the poor boy of having a name that’s too similar to their god… (was that harsh? I ment it in jest…)

  • wolfsbane813

i like mallory a lot…. but after seeing janelle, i’m kinda over her tbh lol

  • Sherena

So, let me get this straight: they have Orphan there cuz he’s an orphan, and Alex Lambert there because it’ll be amusing to see the hordes descend on him & his name… any other affirmative action cases?

  • sbalk017

Ben Honeycutt is gone? NOOOO :( He was so cute too…

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/profile.php?id=587900002&ref=name cruzceleste

Oh my that Kelly boy looks extremely young…

  • Justin8602

So I kinda hope they don’t waste a spot on Ben Honeycutt, cause based on his youtube videos he is basically Kris Allen just maybe with a little more personality/confidence. Which although Kris is fine and can sing, as can this Ben kid. Unfortunately, if we look back season by season, the likeliness of someone with a very similar style/look/feel to the previous winner, does not have a snowballs chance in hell of winning. This is just my opiion though, no disrespect meant to either Kris or Ben, just seems to me that idol has a definite pattern established when it comes to this.

  • Mark

A lot of Indians don’t self identify as “Asian” though. Most Indians I know self identify as “Indian” whereas the East and Southeast Asians self identify as “Asian.” I think it has to do with a more drastic difference in looks between Indians and other Asians? Anyway, it’d be cool if an Asian or an Indian won, since that would mean some of the stereotypes of nerdy, not sexy, etc are going away a bit.

Well, if you’re going to qualify it that strongly… Anoop himself did qualify himself as Asian-American. FWIW. On a similar note, of course, you’ll find people identify as Phillipino-American; would that make them not Asian? Same with people who identify as Japanese-American or Chinese-American. In other words, that hardly says anything at all.

Admittedly, I’m not fond this kind of thinking. If he’s talented enough to be in the Top 24 (and I’d say he is), then he should be in. Period. I mean, come on, we already have the producers at the damn gate making all sorts of awful decisions on this kind of logic, and then throughout the process. I’d just wish we wouldn’t have to think like that to bolster their own thinking, too. Though I’m prone to whining about a certain demographic of singers myself (and it’s not the same one you’re complaining about), I’d find it harsh not to include them because they were reminiscent of contestants past if the talent was there.

There have been many many many people through the years who are more than qualified to be in the top 24 of idol, but don’t even get past the producers, let alone Hollywood week. Main case in point is Colbie Caillet (SP?) I know she did an interview proclaiming she couldn’t even get to see Paula/Randy/Simon when she tried out.

I agree it’s pretty much unfair logic. Personally I liked Honeycutt’s videos and think he has great potential, but I just can’t see him having a real shot at the title based on the 8 past seasons track record. The producers absolutely do have too much control over shaping who they want the winner to be. It just seems though that putting him into the top 24, if I’m basing my logic on the past 8 seasons, seems pretty pointless. This is just my opinion and how I view the way the show works season to season. I’m absolutely not saying I condone it at all, I’m just trying to be realistic…

Oooooh, yes. It’s frustrating, really. But it is a TV show, after all. Still, I’m not inclined to agree that therefore one should continue that logic all the way through. That’s almost outright nihilistic, from where I sit.

Well, I don’t know. Two things; A. it wasn’t like last year’s winner of the same vein was exactly desired either and B. is winning really everything? The show can be an effective platform without that end result, anyway. Besides, the format is more on the side of fodder than it was last year, so I wouldn’t exactly count him out just yet.

I agree that it does have it’s advantages to an extent just to have the exposure, but I have to stick with my gut and say he has no shot at making it far if his YouTube songs indicate what he’ll be doing. Also taking into account that the reigning idol is doing marginally well at best, I can’t see him going far…so for me it boils down to, good for himif he makes it, but he’s got a tougher road than most if he wants to stick around, simply due to the fact from a preliminary view of him suggest super similar styling to the 2009 winner.

  • hicksaholic

    Ben Honeycutt is in.

  • sbalk017

Five more girls left. Think we’ll get them all today?

  • jokiebird

I’m still hoping Vanessa Wolfe is top 24. I love stories like hers.

  • sbalk017

I’m still hoping Vanessa Wolfe is top 24. I love stories like hers.

Me too! And she has such a unique voice. Plus, I’m not really liking any of the spoiled girls right now (except Lacey Brown, I just love her vibe for some reason)

  • MawMaw

Imo the problem with some of the arguments being made that Ben H or any guy like him can’t win because Kris won last year leaves out the biggest factor of all, the voting public. If people tend to be attracted to male singers who just stand and sing, that’s what they’ll vote for again this year and that’s what counts.

I think those of us on these sites tend to think all the viewing public thinks and votes like we do and I don’t think they do. In fact, I believe a large portion of the viewers don’t vote at all and when they do I believe it’s based on their reaction to the performances that night and their general tastes in music. It’s like all the speculation that Kris won because of angry Gokey fans. Rubbish! If Danny’s fans voted for Kris, it was more likely because Kris’s style was more like Danny’s, not all the conspiracy reasons I read the day after the finale.

I also don’t believe the pimping has as much to do with the results as some online fans do. If a viewer is so ambivalent they would let Simon choose their favorite, I just don’t see them spending much time voting.

can’t believe tori kelly isnt in. thought she was going to win

  • chearts77

I see lists…and Mallorie isn’t on any of them. Oh, the suspense is killin’ me.

  • JudyL

Since American Idol is famous for manipulations, unless Vanessa had a complete mental and physical breakdown in Hollywood, I think it was a mistake to eliminate her. Usually they pull shenanigans for people the public doesn’t even like so though I usually hate this type of stuff, I would have loved to see someone at Idol take Vanessa under their wing and give us a chance to see her grow. This blog was overwhelming in support of her and this probably is true of the general viewing audience.

  • sonyab

    Amedeo DiRocco was cut. :( I knew it! :( I’m bummed. :(

  • http://idolstages.com Connie D.

I don’t even feel like watching now if Vanessa Wolfe was cut. I was ready to hear an old style country voice applied to the various themes of Idol, and I wanted to see what she could do with her guitar.

I typically enjoy rock concerts the most, and buy few country CDs. But… this girl… with her beautiful eyes and playful demeanor… is a rare gem.

Vanessa would be a great opening act for former Idol mentor Randy Travis. I hope he saw her on the show.

  • eliza

Angela Martin was the last to get cut with Haeley being the one to survive the final 2 chair elimination.

Seriously? The producers couldn’t find someone else to f*$% with? That just seems inordinately mean to me. The girl has been through enough in her life; leave her alone, Idol.

And based on absolutely nothing, I’m calling Katelyn Epperly as the winner of AI9.

  • chearts77

I was thinking the same thing…that Katelyn may take the crown this year. They haven’t had a folksy singer/songwriter type winner yet.

  • Kirsten

I know. I hope that spoiler is wrong. I thought Idol was going to go for a “feel good” season. That’s what one should do during bad economic times, etc.

  • Kirsten

And based on absolutely nothing, I’m calling Katelyn Epperly as the winner of AI9.

Katelyn was the first girl to make it into the Final 24 (though they might not show it in order).

They’re adding Katelyn Epperly to the list of top 24:

Just because Vanesa was so good in her audition it means absolutely nothing. Lots of people who do well there bomb badly in Hollywood. I liked her too but I’m not terribly upset she didn’t make it. Well not to the point I don’t want to watch.

  • tierbee

I refuse to get attached to anyone enough at this point where I’ll deny myself my Idol habit, lol. I thought Vanessa was ok, but didn’t think she’d hold up to the pressure of Idol. I do hope someone saw her and gives her a shot, she has a nice voice and would make a great story.

  • tierbee

And I am ready for Hollywood week riiiight now. Is it next week?

  • erennick

Still no word on Mallorie, huh?

  • auntieaimee

Well, the girls certainly have it this year. I’m kinda loving that there are so many acoustic/folky/jazzy singers in this bunch. It should make for an interesting season for me. So far my favorites are Ashley, Katelyn, Lilly, and Tyler.

On a side note, I don’t think there was any way Vanessa (she was the bridge jumper, right?) was going to be able to compete at the level of some of the other contestants. They cut people with more experience than she seemed to have, so, for that reason, they did her a favor.

  • dior

    hahaha ALEX LAMBERT?!?

I don’t get why this guy auditioned this year right after Adam. *shakes head*

Are you kidding me? Can I say cannon fodder? That’s hilarious.

  • MalwareDie

I think that Idol is pulling for Janell because of the Taylor Swift hype. She’s better looking and sings better than her and if she succeeds, Idol will have its own Taylor Swift in her. I think it will be disastrous for the genre as it’s already being destroyed.

  • SpenserJ

I know. I hope that spoiler is wrong. I thought Idol was going to go for a “feel good” season. That’s what one should do during bad economic times, etc.

I’m with ya here. This poor girl has been through so much. If she’s not performing well enough to make it on the show, then fine, cut her. But, to make her the last person in the chairs? That seems unreasonably cruel. I’m hoping this plays out on TV differently than it is playing out on my head.

For me, at this point, I have trouble remembering who is who (I just don’t pay enough attention to the audition rounds). So, I’m not really too disappointed to see anyone cut.

I too thought Vanessa was pretty adorable. But, maybe the pressure got to her in Hollywood. Maybe she was mercifully cut to avoid America watching her slowly disintegrate on national TV.

  • Sassycatz

What season did Colbie Caillet try out in? I just want to get an idea, if she had gotten through, whether she would’ve had a chance in hell to advance. I mean, some seasons the producers/judges seem to be bound and determined to have a particular someone win and, other seasons, they seem to be found and determined to have a particular someone NOT win and those seasons are a bit more open.

  • TwigLA

I’m liking Lacey Brown. Interesting voice and tone.

I’m sad for Vanessa. I didn’t think she had a shot at winning, but I really wanted to have her make it onto the show. It would have been an awesome opportunity for her. Hopefully someone will discover her from the airtime she got so far. Maybe Ellen will bring her on her show. She’s done that in the past.

  • leome

Colbie Caillet can’t sing much live, she really isn’t a good singer imo. No surprise she didn’t make it on idol.

  • Yui

    I like Lacey too ^
    she somehow stands out.

Who do you guys think will be the first 2 guy cuts? obviously there were a few that seemed especially fodder-ish to me. Alex Lambert… and David Duke? I also hope Lee doesnt stay too long. don’t like his style much.

personally i think it should be a good year for some of the minorities that typically get ignored (asian males). why? because w/ so many wbwg who should ultimately cancel out, as long as a sufficient demographic votes for the minorities they should at least be propelled towards the top 12.

  • jammasta

    Colbie Caillat auditioned? o_O

Even the list of guys gives me the feeling that it’s a girl’s year. I don’t know why.

Looks like Aaron Kelly is gonna be my closest candidate to David/Kris/Joe so far. From some of the stuff I’ve seen from him, DO NOT WANT! Eep.

Uggggggh @ Alex Lambert. I feel bad for the guy, he should go by Alexander to prevent confusion. I can see him being shunned unintentionally by some crazier Adam fans who thought his name was a typo in a news article. I hope the news refers to him as Alex or Alexander. But in terms of his singing, I’m not sure. Too lazy to watch a video :P. That’s incredibly lazy.

Why was I surprised to see that Janell Wheeler was a girl? Despite having a feminine name? It’s kinda…. feminine/masculine sounding. She’s a beauty :P.

I feel bad for Angela Martin (lol The Office). How many times has she auditioned? Someone should find her a record label.

  • Bearcatgrad9912

I’d be really surprised if Mallorie Haley doesn’t make the Top 24.

  • Niall

If the show itself and the media types like Slezak don’t make a big deal out of Alex Lambert’s last name, the audience won’t care. The bulk of AI fans have extremely short memories, hence the short window of opportunity for contestants after the show. And of those who do remember, only crazy Adam fans are going to have their panties in a wad over it.

Besides, based on what I’ve seen of him so far? He won’t make it to the Top 12 unless he really overachieves.

  • Sassycatz

Lambert isn’t exactly an uncommon name. There’s also Miranda Lambert who gained attention through the show, Nashville Star. Hey, they had two Cooks on during Season 7 and that wasn’t a big deal. I just don’t see why it matters.

  • chearts77

Bearcatgrad, I’d be surprised too if Mallorie doesn’t make it (and sad). I’m a little worried though. They have Janell in there who is also country. Will they take 2 country girls to the top 24?

I just listened to Janell…not bad…I still like Mallorie better. I guess I’ll get a better idea when I hear Janell on the show.

  • JudyOhio

Is it posted on here somewhere or does anyone know the schedule? How many weeks of auditions, when will Hollywood week air (or how many nights are spent on it), when is “chair” day, what week do they show the top 24, etc…………???

Exactly. People can’t help their last name. Most will hear it, go “oh there was a Lambert last season too” and never think of it again.

  • Bearcatgrad9912

I’ll have to check out Janell. I hope Mallorie makes it too. They’ve had similar types in the Top 24 before, so I hope it won’t matter. She’d have had to really bomb in Hollywood I would think not to make it. Then again, Felicia Barton was unfairly cut initially last season before being asked to return. So I am not holding my breath. I’m bummed to that Tori Kelly was already cut. I thought she was good. I am glad about Katelynn Epperly though. She blew me away with her youtube videos. She might the girl to beat if Mallorie doesn’t make it in.

Listening to Janell now. She’s pretty good. I wonder if Mallorie sounding SO similar to Carrie Underwood might hurt her even though they look nothing alike.

  • JudyOhio

Oh, and I wish Venessa could have stayed in the competition just a little bit further too. She had the raw talent, yet needed the mentoring, image making, makeover, etc. Would like to have seen how that would have played out.

  • MalwareDie

Mallorie and Carrie sound nothing alike. And Janell is an older, actually good looking version of Taylor Swift that can sing. She isn’t Country.

  • Bearcatgrad9912

I didn’t notice the similarities of Mallorie and Carrie til I listened again and heard others mention it. I definitely hear a similar sounding tone.

Janell has a bit of a Mandy Moore sound which I really like. She’s definitely got a country vibe mixed with pop.

  • JudyOhio

Thanks for the TV schedule Valentin432!

Spoilers are really something. Appears Hollywood week airs through Feb. 17, and here we almost know all of the top 24 already, wow.

  • hicksaholic

I don’t see how it can be for the best if Vanessa got cut unless a record company is going to begin grooming her. It seems to me any experience she got would have been helpful for her. Granted she may have crashed and burned getting it but it would be easier for her the next time.

  • http://www.planetfierce.proboards.com/ mgk

Vanessa seems like she’d be a better fit for the X Factor. Maybe next year? I think she’d do better with the support and mentoring of a judge, rather than trying to do it unassisted.

  • gangreen29

Mallorie and Carrie sound nothing alike.

I sooooo disagree with this. Listen to Mallorie and then Carrie’s version of Piece of My Heart. Carrie is obviously the stronger singer, but it is eerie how similar their tone is.

OMG TORI KELLY GOT CUT????? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
she was one of my favorites……. :(

Eeeeeeh… just did, and I’m not sure. Both female and country. But, for referent, I’d listen against to the Faith Hill version against those two to get a better sense of what’s peculiar to the version and what’s peculiar to the tone. There are some differences in that performance and, I might add, in the online song recordings, at least as far as I could tell.

  • cakeygirl

yeah mallorie and carrie dont sound anything alike….carrie sounds alot better

  • cakeygirl

and LMAO about Alex Lambert. you cant write nething better than that! lol i know its not his name but he will no doubt get mentioned for the adam comparison

that’s creepy!!! carrie is def the better singer, but there were a few notes in there that eerily sounded like carrie.

  • windmills

Boy I hope Janell’s not AI’s idea of country because her voice really isn’t made for country. She’s a solid pop singer who can infuse other genres including a little twang. The songs on her myspace were the definition of eh. Not my favorite. Comparing her to Mallorie’s tough but I like Mallorie’s tone better and I thought she did a good job on the song I heard on her myspace. She’s got a solid country vibe to her voice but she’s also versatile a la Kelly Clarkson.

Aaron Kelly is talented but Cry Like Memphis on his myspace page was not well sung and he seems like he needs a few years of development to work out his own style. I’m surprised if the Hollywood round didn’t eat him alive.

  • MalwareDie

windmills, that’s exactly what I feel. I see AI pushing Janell as a Country artist because AI caters to the market and not the other way around. The Idol machine only cares about making money and with the Swift phenomenon going strong, I think they might try and bring on a second Swift through Janell. I fear the worst for Country music.

  • smartcookie

Still no word on Mallorie or Jaclyn? Bummer.

  • MawMaw

IF, and I do believe they will, Idol is looking for a Taylor Swift type I think this girl will be in the Top 24. She’s listed as a strong possiblity. I think I read somewhere she writes her own music as well.

It’s fun finding out who made it into the TOP 24, but I feel like I did when I opened some Christmas presents early, and then wrapped them up so my parents wouldn’t find out. At least I won’t get too invested in some of the contestants. I thought maybe Maddie might be there, but it seems she’s been cut.

  • blmetsfan

If they’re looking for a Taylor Swift-type, I hope they can find one who can actually sing.

  • milajoy

I added Maddy Curtis to the top 24. :)

  • itsalleternal

Maddy contradicts what her mother said though, so I’d be skeptical personally…

Plus, I have the Season 8 Top 13, and some other charts linked up there:

    http://mjsbigblog.com/historical-charts

mj, the links for S8 contestants don’t seem to be working anymore just a heads up.

  • sander88

No word on Mallorie Haley yet? Oh boy, I’m nervous now. I really liked her.

  • chearts77

I really like Mallorie too and am getting very nervous!!

*scratches head* This Maddy cut in Hollywood…no wait, she’s top 24 confuzzles me.

Yes, I know The videos were taken down. It will probably happen again this year, too.

  • windmills

I fear the worst for Country music.

I feel ya but IMO country music’s got bigger problems than whatever Janell might bring to it. People’s idea of country music have already gotten really diluted anyway. I’ll wait until I’ve got some idea of how she uses her voice and how much she actually knows about country music before I judge the girl.

IMO they’re likely to want a Taylor Swift/Colbie Caillat type that they can market mostly to pop but pick up some of the crossover market too. We know Kara’s likely to like that style because she’s written some with Colbie Caillat and the songs she wrote on Katharine McPhee’s album are also in that style. The pop label’s definitely going to be interested too because that sound’s good for all of the pop radio formats right now.

But the problem is the market is there but they’re going to need a story people can latch onto for whoever wins. Being a better singer than Taylor isn’t hard but IMO a lot of the appeal of Taylor’s songs to her teen/tween fans is the killer combo of them thinking her songs are the soundtrack to their lives AND the fact that they can sing the songs at least as well if not better than Taylor can. So whoever wins AI they’ll need songs and a story people can really relate to.

    So Maddy isn’t cut?!!?! :) YAY! :)

  • sbalk017

There seems to be a lot of indie-pop girls and r&b boys this season. :-/

I just hope that one of the r&b boys can stand out by being current and not motown/gospel/old-school crooner type that we always get… Can one of them pull off some NeYo or Drake?

  • gleekester

oh no guys I have bad news mallorie got cut, its on joes place blog. I still cant believe it tha maddy is in the top 24, i predict she be cut the first week.

  • glamfan

i like janell, even though i like taylor swift’s voice better. she’s from my home town but i’ve never heard of her. and since when is there anything wrong with mixing country and pop? it’s not “destroying the genre.” Lilly Scott has a really interesting voice, i don’t recall there being such an indie sounding artist to make it this far before. i think ashley is currently my favorite though. definitely a lot of strong girls this year.

  • jammasta

I just hope that one of the r&b boys can stand out by being current and not motown/gospel/old-school crooner type that we always get… Can one of them pull off some NeYo or Drake?

Meh, IMO we need another Ne-Yo. Then again, I’m not as much a fan of modern R&B as I am of R&B from the 90′s-early 2000′s. Boyz II Men, Dru Hill, etc. I hope Jermaine can be closer to them than he is to Ne-Yo. Ne-Yo is good, but for some reason, it feels like he lacks soul. Maybe I’m just old. I dunno, I think it would be great to see a male version of Alicia Keys.

Mallorie got cut? :(. Guess it’s up to Jermaine, Katie, and Tyler (of the contestants we have so far). Let’s see how much it changed, like last year when I went from a Lil/Danny/Matt fan to a Kris/Matt/Allison fan.

  • chearts77

gleekster, where? I just went to joes place and I see nothing about Mallorie being cut. She’s still just listed as making it to Hollywood, but nothing about being cut.

  • Duke

Vanessa Wolfe not making it is an absolute travesty.

Same with the final boston auditioner that was a chick and sang blues.

Whats with all the 16yr old below average singers? lame.

  • gangreen29

Vanessa Wolfe not making it is an absolute travesty.

Whats with all the 16yr old below average singers? lame.

So your problem is that they are 16? Because Vanessa was a below average singer too. I loved her audition, it was very touching, but her singing is not up to par to most people at this level. Would you rather idol just keep her on for her back story? People seemed annoyed with that last year so I would be surprised if that has now changed. I just know Vanessa is going to be this years Leneshe where people ignore the poor vocals and act like if she had been on the show she would be a serious contender and that she was robbed.

  • iluvai

I can’t keep track anymore with the contestants. Although I was touched by Vanessa.

    AI is on tomorrow. :)

  • ptslittlecomment

If Maddy has not been cut, how does she and her Mom get away with doing press like this article with the Catholic News Agency ?
    http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/american_idol_contestant_maddy_curtis_comes_from_large_pro-life_family/
I know its mostly second – hand press, but it’s still pimping Maddy.

  • MalwareDie

Dang. I’m so disappointed. I will vomit if the producers try to portray Janell as a Country singer. She’s about as Country as I am a superstar.

  • MalwareDie

I think the end of American Idol is imminent. Most of the spoiled contestants don’t have very good vocals.

  • Niall

Vanessa Wolfe not making it is an absolute travesty.

Based on what? Her segment on AI and a snippet of her singing to the judges? We have no idea how some of these people did in Hollywood. She may have fallen apart and not given them any reason to put her in the Top 24. I’m curious about a few of the cuts, including Vanessa, but not ready to say any of it is a travesty based on the audition episodes.

  • Adamdebomb

Malware, I sort of agree. However, I think Ashley, Michele and the girl from IowA have pretty good voices. The guys? Meh. It is, as everyone says, WGWG. A boring, scrubfaced, lot of boring. No rockers (save one girl) no edge, nothing unique.
BEAR IN MIND The top 24 can change due to problems at this point with contractual obligations, background checks etc. And YES, I would have loved to seen a “Vanessa” in this competition.

  • hicksaholic

I guess we’re positive Vanessa was cut? Boo!

  • chearts77

MalwareDie (awesome name, BTW), listened to Janell some more and I agree with you. She is NOT country. Her page states that she’s country/pop/soul, but I don’t hear the country part. IMO, the female country “role” is still out there and unaccounted for.

  • ptslittlecomment
  • MawMaw

I think Casey James shows promise. I’m not jumping on the Ben Honeycutt wagon like so many are. He seems to be the one gaining the most fans preHollywood and his audition wasn’t even shown. I just don’t get that. LOL

As far as Idol being doomed, I think Simon Fuller is gonna do his best to “beat” Simon Cowell (XFactor) and he has the money to do it. He seems to realize a lot rests on who replaces Simon next year. MJ posted this article a few days ago:

    http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/tv/calls_cowell_new_show_mud_who_nasty_wzxYl1Vvtf7qyeLf2RAVhJ

  • chearts77

MawMaw, I like what I’ve heard from Casey as well. I do like Ben too…but not ready to jump on that bandwagon either. If Mallorie is indeed cut, I might throw my support Casey’s way…of course, it all depends on how I feel when I actually hear him on the show. LOL!!

  • MalwareDie

I don’t think it will matter because Simon is more cunning. He has encouraged cut contestants to try out for X-Factor and I don’t think it would be beneath him to actually sabotage this year’s Top 24 with weaker people. He’s an opportunist at heart.

    And thanks chearts77.

  • MalwareDie

I’m not too impressed by Casey, though of course it’s blatantly obvious that he’s a country singer.

  • Hellraiser

Maddy Curtis is obviously home like every other contestant who made top 24 or not. Do you expect Idol to keep all yellow ticketers locked up in a Hollywood hotel for a whole month while they’re airing the audition rounds? Don’t think so…
    She’s home doesn’t mean she’s out, so it’s very likely she’s in.

  • chearts77

MalwareDie, I’m not getting a country vibe from Casey. I’m getting a southern rock vibe from him.

Hellraiser, what confuses me about Maddy is she was home on Wed (per her mom’s blog)…Hollywood was still going on at that point.

  • MalwareDie

chearts77, I’ll listen to him again, you’re probably right. I wasn’t really listening because I’m still broken about Mallorie’s cut.

I finally saw the Boston videos (thanks, mj). What happened to Leah Laurenti? Was she cut? I loved, loved her audition.

I liked Tyler and Katie, too.

  • MalwareDie

Yeah, Casey seems country to me.

  • MalwareDie

    Yeah, Leah was cut.

  • MalwareDie

Is there more than one Casey James?

  • MalwareDie

Oh, I was checking out the wrong Casey James. I’m ashamed.

  • chearts77

LOL, MalwareDie!! There are a few Casey James floating around in cyber space. It’s understandable.

  • MalwareDie

The Casey James that has made it to the Top 24 no longer has his songs up there so I can’t listen.

  • Grammie Kari

I added Maddy Curtis to the top 24. I added Maddy Curtis to the top 24.

Oh, milajoy I am confused about Maddy Curtis too! I liked her a lot. Why would her Mom disagree? I also liked Leah but know that she was cut early on.

    Thank you for the information!

    Yeah, Leah was cut.

    Aww. That’s too bad. :(

  • chearts77

OK…this is getting “funny”…Joes Place has removed Maddy from the top 24 list. I’m so confused. LOL!!

  • MalwareDie

It’s unconfirmed whether Maddy is in or out based on VFTW’s possibly fake tip.

  • ashes07

what about mallorie haley??? has anybody heard anything about her? if she made the top 24 or not?

  • SpenserJ

After tonight’s episode, I’ve decided that I simply will not be able to stomach watching Angela get cut in the last of the “chairs”. Honestly, I want life to cut that girl a break so bad, I’m considering producing her CD myself LOL.

I think that watching life kick that poor girl in the teeth again will just break my cold, black heart.

  • gangreen29

“After tonight’s episode, I’ve decided that I simply will not be able to stomach watching Angela get cut in the last of the “chairs”.”

Yeah, thats all I could think about during her audition.

Was Lee shown? I wanted to hear him!
Katelyn and Paige were both very good. Was Justin the guitar player?

That’s all I could think about, too :( . Can’t watch, it is heartbreaking.

  • chearts77

Yeah, when they were showing Angela’s audition, all I could think about was her missing out again. My heart ached for her. At that moment, I wished I didn’t know her fate already. :(

Ashes, a list I saw somewhere had Mallorie cut in Hollywood sometime before the top 50. :( My heart ached seeing that too because she’s my fave to date.

Word is that Maddy was cut in Hollywood and not in the top 24.

    I have a headache.

  • Grammie Kari

I wish Angela had made it last season, and Lil was trying out this season. Angela has had a hard life, and I hope she can land a goos job out of all this.

  • erennick

I agree with what everyone has said about Angela. My heart was aching for her too. Why producers, why? And I thought she sounded fantastic!

And while I am on the subject of lament, why or why is Kara DioGuardi on my television screen? With every episode I loathe her more… Shania was great. I’d listen to her give advice over Kara anyday.

  • Kate8

I wish Angela would have made the top 24 also.

  • MawMaw

I’m seeing Siobhan Magnus listed on other sites. Maddy is off their lists.

  • MawMaw

Siobhan’s listed as “former lead singer” on her bands MySpace and that’s why some are putting her in the top 24 list.

    http://www.myspace.com/lunarvalve

  • sander88

Still no word on Mallorie Haley? SHe was good!

  • chearts77

sander88, there is a list on another site that has Mallorie cut sometime in Hollywood before the top 50. :( If true, that sucks because she was my favorite. I hope the list is wrong.

  • girlygirl

There isn’t one person in the Top 24 I am all that interested in. Hopefully that will change once I see them on Top 24 nights but right now I’m like meh…based on the little I’ve seen, none of these people would have had any chance of winning Season 8

  • MalwareDie

She could be in the Top 50, we don’t know. The whole Top 50 hasn’t been accounted for.

  • MalwareDie

Mallorie could have blitzed the competition like Carrie had, but they’re looking for the next Taylor Swift instead.

  • agathe.hb

I reall like John Park – I like his voice and he is cute – I agree with Shania :)

  • jammasta

Strange, people are comparing Mallorie to a lesser version of Carrie, yet I like Mallorie (a lot) and am not a Carrie fan :P.

    God, I hope she’s through.

  • Bearcatgrad9912

Oh man only two spots left! My dad emailed me about this girl Jaclyn North from Texas who auditioned. She’s living in Nashville right now, but my guess that she auditioned in Dallas. I hope they show her at least. I listened to her music on her wesbite and myspace and was impressed. She’s country and I really like her, but it sounds like she may not have made it :(

  • jammasta

There’s 3 spots. Maddy’s cut (right? I’m incredibly confused), and the list skips the number 8.

  • windmills

Mallorie could have blitzed the competition like Carrie had, but they’re looking for the next Taylor Swift instead.

I just had a thought. What if they were thinking they already have a Carrie and don’t need another one especially since Mallorie doesn’t have as strong a voice. But they don’t have a Taylor Swift/Colbie Caillat. They might’ve gone for Janell just to fill out their own roster plus that way she isn’t going to face the direct comparisons with Carrie because her style is different.

Me I’d have rather they just put the best singers through. Based on what little I’ve heard I definitely preferred Mallorie’s voice and style. But it’s always hard to tell because it takes hearing their voices in different contexts and a few performances. IF it’s true that Mallorie didn’t make it then we still don’t know how things went in Hollywood. For all we know she screwed up lyrics or something. But it could just be they wanted something different.

There’s 3 spots. Maddy’s cut (right? I’m incredibly confused), and the list skips the number 8.

Yes now that Maddy’s off the list there’s 3 spots left to be spoiled, all girls.

SWEET! John Park got through! I’m so excited!

He’s the only one I really remember name wise from any of the auditions so…

One strange thing I noticed is Crystal Bowersox isn’t shown among the Golden Ticket interviews on the AI site. She should be in the Chicago group, but isn’t. Keith Semple is missing as well, but he was disqualified because of visa problems (he’s from Ireland).

Makes me wonder if this is just an oversight or if Crystal might have been disqualified within the past day or two for some reason.

The thing is that I don’t think they’re really that similar but maybe Idol does. Mallorie is less of a powerhouse and her own person, and IMO not a lesser wannabe clone of Carrie. I’m actually surprised with the blog mentions of how she’s so distinctly similar to Carrie.

Idol has been known to preselect people before they air the auditions (See the promos), and this season, they’ve selected a very weak group of males to fulfill their agenda of a girl winning this season (They have made it clear that they want this to happen). There was a really strong male that could have won this season who has already been cut and people speculate that it’s because the producers felt threatened by his possible presence in the competition. They even break their own ‘rules’ for their predetermined favorites. Joanna Pacitti couldn’t remember a single word of her Hollywood performance but they allowed her to advance any way making Simon’s “forget the words, you’re out” comment ridiculous. And all of the judges have praised really pitchy performances before and made them seem brilliant. Idol has never really truly been just about the talent because every season could have been better if there weren’t random weak singers placed in the competition to increase the chances of their favorites winning but it’s been getting worse these last few years. They introduced instruments, which allowed contestants with weak vocals to use them as a crutch and the show is increasingly about the drama and not the singing.

  • larc

Aaron Kelly is really good. The tweens are going to lurve him.

You’re probably right. Some people have been dissing him, but I think they’ve been seeing his earlier videos when he looked and sounded more like a little boy.

    Malware,
You are right about the manipulation. I believe the last few years it has increased substantially. Who was the really strong male they cut? That really irritates me if that’s true. Simon will probably call him for X Factor next year though. It is sad to me that they would be so manipulative and play on someone’s emotions like that. It’s one thing if they truly don’t think they are good but quite another if they are doing it for another reason.

  • ptslittlecomment

Joe’s Place has added Siobhan Magnus to the Top 24 list.

  • larc

You are right about the manipulation. I believe the last few years it has increased substantially. Who was the really strong male they cut?

That’s probably Jeffrey David Goldford. Reports have been that his final Hollywood performance particularly bowled everybody over. Yet he was cut.

It becomes clearer with every season of AI that they are casting the show, not auditioning for it.

  • Mark

It becomes clearer with every season of AI that they are casting the show, not auditioning for it.

Been obvious for a while. Especially if you consider the repeat auditioners, who more often than not are better than at least some of the people who made it through in the same year.

  • cookcricket

I do believe the manipulation was so obvious last year, that nothing surprises me this year.

However, we don’t know the entire story with Angela. Obviously she couldn’t go through last year due to her ticket and we didn’t find that out until last night, right?

Perhaps, just perhaps, there was some kind of mutual decision between her and the judges not to got through. Maybe she had some kind of say in it. My heart does go out to her though. It’s unbelievable how much she has been through. :(

  • SexyEvey

Janell Wheeler is a hometown girl so she should be on tonight. The guy they just showed on TV was Charlie Belcher (fox tampa station) that didnt know who Kristin was.. =( He’s the one that always has the latest AI news for our local station and it sucks people will now know him for that! LOL Janell is SUPER hot btw..

  • larc

One strange thing I noticed is Crystal Bowersox isn’t shown among the Golden Ticket interviews on the AI site. She should be in the Chicago group, but isn’t.

Problem solved. She’s there now. :)

  • gangreen29

So 14 of the 22 spoiled contestants have had their audition cities shown. Ashley Rodriguez, Janell Wheeler, Jermaine Sellers, John Park, Katie Stevens, Katelyn Epperly, and Tyler Grady have had their auditions shown on the show. Michelle Delamor was shown in a commercial but not on the show. Siobhan Magnus, Lee DeWyze, Lacey Brown, Crystal Bowersox, Ben Honeycutt, and Aaron Kelly did not have their auditions shown. Alex Lambert, Andrew Garcia, Casey James, Chris Golightly, David Duke, Haeley Vaughn, Lily Scott, and Michael Lynche still have a chance for their auditions to be shown on the show, and of course there are the two unnamed females left.

  • Bearcatgrad9912

They introduced instruments, which allowed contestants with weak vocals to use them as a crutch

I don’t see that at all. It helped the show if anything and made it better! Season 7 was THE best season ever IMO. You don’t have to have a ridiculous range to be a strong singer. Brooke White, Jason Castro, Kris Allen are all very solid vocally most of the time and happen to also be quite good at playing while they sing. It adds a nice dimension and IMO, if you’re going to sing, you ought to at least KNOW how to play an instrument. I tend to like those artists a lot more because they are MUSICIANS not just singing puppets. It also makes it less of a karoke show.

  • anemicandholding

It’s pretty much impossible to go back the day of 2002-2004, when all one needed to do to win was stand still and sing ’70s standards and it would be enough to not only get you the title, but to produce an album that quickly sold platinum and beyond. Idol has changed and the industry has changed and it’s just not possible to go back to pure karaoke.

If TPTB want a girl to win, she has to bring something different to the table than just an attractive look and a pretty voice. TPTB stacked the deck with them in S6 and it resulted in their most boring season ever. It just isn’t enough anymore.

  • s0x_prisoner

Question… so Charity Vance isn’t in the Top 24, even though you have her listed as Top 24 under the Top 48 list?

  • Justin8602

I’ve been lurking in the idol forums and it’s looking like the completed list will be leaked soon. Idol Maniac posted that he has the completed list and will be posting soon.

  • http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=iamthepurplewalrus&view=videos purplesmile

The youtubes are starting to disappear. I tried checking out Aaron Kelly’s JTTW cover and it’s no longer there. The videos on Andrew Garcia’s channel are all gone now, too.

  • Suzanne

I really liked Matthew Lawrence last night on the show. I’m sorry to see that he didn’t make it thru Hollywood.

  • windmills

Idol Maniac has Vered Didi Benami in the top 24. She’s deleted the music off her myspace. Links originally at VFTW:

    http://www.myspace.com/dvered
    http://www.myspace.com/vereddidi
    http://www.facebook.com/didi.benami

She describes her music as a cross between soul and country music.

Also at idolforums I’m reading that one girl thought to be cut is in and one guy thought to be in was cut and somebody else is in. There are asterisks by the names of Ben Honeycutt and John Park that are unexplained.

  • chearts77

I read that too, windmills. Didi is sooooo similar to Janell (looks and music wise). I wonder if Janell is really in it. Didi’s music is down off her pages…whereas Janell’s music is still up.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Mallorie is the girl originally thought cut that is actually in the top 24. She’s the only one that has really caught my attention so far.

Wondering about Ben…so many questions surrounding him and if he’s really in. I know a whole lot of people who will be upset if he is out.

    This is getting interesting.

  • unique28v

I’ve read a few reports that think Katie Stevens is this year’s Carrie. Meaning, she’s won before the season has even started. Anyone agree?

  • Adamdebomb

Katie is just meh for me unique. A very talented teen to be sure, but nothing unique. Vocally, Michelle from Miami is fantastic, as is Ashley and the girl from Iowa. I thought Wheeler was almost awful, no clue why she is in the top 24 instead of a few others reported to be cut. I think the poster who said they are CASTING is dead on. I only watched last year because of Adam, I can see myself really losing interest this year-more like the American Idol pageant. No-one with an edge or hook. Yawn.

  • gangreen29

I’ve read a few reports that think Katie Stevens is this year’s Carrie. Meaning, she’s won before the season has even started. Anyone agree?

Ugh, I can’t imagine that is true, or at least I hope not. I think Katie is good enough to make the top 24 and do well on the show, but nothing about her jumps out as future star in the making. She is plain looking, has a dull personality, and her singing is not very distinctive.

  • windmills

JoesPlace and dhealy2003 are thinking Ben Honeycutt is not in the top 24. They’re saying John Park is 100% confirmed to be top 24 and there’s a 12th guy IdolManiac’s sure made it but hasn’t revealed yet.

  • milajoy
  • anemicandholding

Now IDF is saying David Duke is out and someone named Jose Munoz is in, but they still have no idea about Ben.

  • windmills

So Paige DeChausse is the 12th girl. I hope that means she had a great Hollywood week. She has a nice instrument but her audition was a little uneven. Her story reminds me of Anthony Federov’s from Season 4.

It’ll be interesting seeing if they show what happened with Mallorie Haley.

  • girlygirl

So if this list is correct, the small town bridge jumper girl Vanessa didn’t make it and neither did Angela Martin her 3rd time in Hollywood…

  • http://myspace.com hgzaj

So for the first time ever there’s only one African American female in the top 24. And she’s only 16. That’s craazy. The diva power must have been extremely lackluster this year. And if she doesn’t make the top 12, this’ll be the first season without one. Woooow…… unless you count Michelle because unless I am mistaken she is “mixed”? I was surprised they didn’t show her audition last night after promoting her on the commercials… maybe she’ll be in the ‘best of’ episode.

  • leome

    has a dull personality

I love how people can take all these conclusions from a few seconds that we see of them during the auditions.
I don’t think we know enough about these contestant’s talent much less about their personalities.
And I remember many many out there calling Kris dull last year… we saw where that took him.

She got several minutes to talk, and I watched her interview clip online too. Katie does not have a personality that jumps out at you, and you aren’t going to get a long time to show your personality on this show, so in context of this show, she is dull.

  • sonyab

    leome

To me Kris IS dull.. But a lot of people don’t find him dull and that’s fine. :) I think he is hot tho. :)

  • smartcookie

The interview (with Kris and Jesse Langseth) that they showed at this point (or after the 32 was chosen — not sure) was actually really funny and goofy and not dull at all. It’s where “kick awesome” came from. Comparing that to Katie Stevens’ interview up now. Zzzzzzzz… I liked her when she tried out, but she’s very young and unformed and shows no personality whatsoever in that interview, except she goes back over the Alzheimer’s territory. I think it’s fair to say she seems like a dull girl based on that. I would not say the same (of either Kris or Jesse) based on the “kick awesome” interview.

  • rayato

Okay, now that we officially have our Top 24, I gonna throw out the first prediction for the Top 12.

    Aaron Kelly
    Andrew Garcia
    Ashley Rodriguez
    Ben Honeycutt
    Chris Golightly
    Jermaine Sellers
    Katie Stevens
    Katelyn Epperly
    Lacey Brown
    Michelle Delamor
    Siobhan Magnus
    Tyler Grady

  • gingerly

I pay little attention to auditions. I watch the first and maybe second because I’m Idol deprived. I’m unconcerned until top 24 because that is when we can vote and that is when it matters what they do and how they do it.

  • rayni

Yay! Here we go! I’m calling these for SURE top 12:

    Tyler Grady
Jermaine Sellers (he’s my guy right now)
    Ashley Rodriguez
    Katelyn Epperly

After that – not a clue except I really like the name Siobhan. I’m so excited!!!! Woot!

  • gleekester

Now I am totally excited for the competition begin in the next 4 or 5 weeks. So far my favs are Michelle, Ashely, Katie, Andrew, Jermaine and Ben. This crop of contenders seems very diverse, interesting and have good vocal chops. If could predict the top 12, it would be
    Michelle Delamor
    Ashely Rodriguez
    Katie Stevens
    Katelyn Epperly
    Janell Wheeler
the last girl is a toss up
    Andrew Garcia
    Jermaine Sellers
    Ben Honeycutt
    Aaron Kelly
    Chris Golightly
    Tyler Grady or John Park

  • cakeygirl

im gonna go with ashley rodriguez in top 3

  • iluvai

I like Katie Stevens. But there’s a bunch I know nothing about. It will be fun to watch the next few weeks, even though I peeked at the list.

  • http://www.noahsarkworkshop.com/tammyluebrecht_s9189 tammyinohio

So far the only ones I’m really interested in are Ben Honeycutt and Ashley Rodriguez. I hope the rest of them get me excited the more I see and hear them because so far I’m not.

  • sleeptalker

Wow I really am not a fan of hardly any of the guys. If I had to pick, I’d go with John Park or Lee DeWyze though.

But the girls? I’m liking me some Lilly Scott, Lacey Brown, Crystal Bowersox, and Siobhan Magnus! Really pulling for Siobhan…getting awesome vibes from her so far.

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

Ditto. I can’t get invested until at least Hollywood week is aired on TV. I think we had the spoilers a lot earlier last year, so I knew who to look for in the auditions. Is there anyone getting a lot of buzz, you know Archie and Adam kind of buzz?

  • chessguy99

I’m thinking Janell is Kristy Lee Cook v2.0. Get her on the tour, then good bye. I wonder if they’ll get her album recorded before the tour starts, like KLC’s was.

I’m liking Ashley and Katelyn, for the girls. Jermaine and Michael, for the guys.

The interesting contestant is going to be Tyler, he could be a trainwreck in the themes.

  • Grammie Kari

rayato, I agree with 10 of your choices, but as has been mentioned, we have much to see. Not having a teenage Country Boy, Aaron Kelly (Participated in ‘America’s Most Talented Kids’
Winner of American Idol Experience at DisneyWorld) has an excellent chance of going on the tour.

  • MawMaw

I’m waiting to see more of Casey James. I heard some of his music and liked it. Plus he’s not bad to look at. LOL

  • http://www.fatladysings.us TFLS

Wow. Only a couple of my early favorites made the cut. And none of the quirky ones – except maybe Tyler Grady. I like quirky. Style’s just as important as a powerful instrument – more so if the performer knows how to hold an audience. When will Idol producers understand that cookie-cutter good just isn’t enough? I don’t WANT another Carrie Underwood or Jennifer Hudson. The originals are just fine, thank you very much. What I want is to listen to an original anybody; just as long as they hold my interest. Hmmmmm. Guess we’ll have to see how this all plays out.

  • Valentin432

We are still in the early stages so it’s hard to make any kind of prediction.

Looking at the list, I think we are going to see a big rebound year for contemporary RnB with Ashley, Jermaine, big Mike Lynch and I guess Haeley (not heard her sing tough), it’s been two years since AI has produced a recording artist in this genre.

Also a strong number of accoustic pop/rock artists in the same vein of Castro/Brooke/Kris with Andrew, Ben, Lee, Katelyn, Janell or Lacey.

I wonder who will be the rocker from this season, since season 4 every year there’s at least one who does very well in the competition. I guess Casey or Tyler could be it for the boys and maybee Siobhan or Crystal for the girls.

  • Jutsteroni

Haeley Vaughn’s videos were taken down from her myspace.

  • jammasta

I thought Haeley Vaughn was described as a BGWG (Black Girl with Guitar).

  • Jutsteroni

Supposedly, Haeley has a sort of Taylor Swift, singer/songwriter vibe. However, she’s not country.

  • Akatot

Supposedly, Haeley has a sort of Taylor Swift, singer/songwriter vibe. However, she’s not country.

Neither is Taylor Swift, but that’s just me.

  • MalwareDie

There are at least several here that agree with you, Akatot. And I wonder who was the girl that quit.

  • J9BT

I am very surprised that Matt Lawrence isn’t on this list since Simon called his audition “brilliant” and Kara said he was “going Top 12.”

I feel so badly for Angela Martin. I wonder if she backed out since her mother went missing, or if in fact she was cut. If she was cut, the producers have a mean streak in them because she can sing, has a good personality and has about as strong of a back story as anyone I saw so far this season (yes we still have a couple more audition cities left).

I am not going to even attempt rating these people or predicting a Top 12 since I haven’t seen much of many of them, and the last two seasons I ended up voting for contestants who weren’t even shown until Top 24/36.

  • ptslittlecomment

Joes Place just twitted that one of the Top 24 may have been disqualified but I can’t access that website from this computer.

JoesPlaceBlog New blog post: American Idol Top 24 Contestant Disqualified??? http://bit.ly/7NrkZy

  • J9BT

Joe’s place said that it was Michael Lynche that was disquailified and replaced with Michael Antwan who was voted off top 50.

If I had to guess, I’d say it was as a result of the newspaper article that showed up yesterday where Michael Lynche’s father confirmed that he made the Top 24 of IDOL. I was surprised to read that knowing the gag orders that are part of the contract. I’m guessing breach of contract is the reason for disqualification.

I’m editing my comment. Here is the article I read yesterday. Also, I just looked on Joe’s place and they said it was a breach of confidentiality agreement. Unbelievable.

Plus, it sounds like its Michael’s father that broke the contract….. so can they blame Big Mike for it?

  • J9BT

I really hope this isn’t true about Michael Lynch

I believe it’s true, unfortunately. Rules are rules, and there are reasons for them whether the contestants like them or not. The sad part of this is that his Dad may have just ruined his career by leaking confidential information. That’s a tough pill to swallow.

  • Valentin432

Plus, it sounds like its Michael’s father that broke the contract….. so can they blame Big Mike for it?

I guess it is partially his fault since it means he told his father about it.

  • unique28v

The sad part of this is that his Dad may have just ruined his career by leaking confidential information. That’s a tough pill to swallow.

Do parents sign a confidentiality agreement? If not, I don’t know how you could blame the contestant for what their parents do.

I’m listening to some of Michael’s pre-idol work. He sounds like the real deal. His style is something Idol never really had before. If its true its a shame.

  • J9BT

Plus, it sounds like its Michael’s father that broke the contract….. so can they blame Big Mike for it?

Yes, they can. I’m not sure of the entire list of parties to these contracts/agreements, but it’s been very clear from parents and family members of other contestants that there is gag order that applies to everyone.

  • unique28v

although, i don’t know how “Big MIke” was rumored as the favorite when the judges are going around saying the girls are stronger this year and will take the Idol crown.

  • HoldYourOwn

I kinda liked what I’ve seen of Michael Lynche. :( That really sucks if his father ruined it for him.

  • sonyab

Wow!!!! That is just to bad. Did they show Michael Lynche and Antwan Michael’s audition yet?

  • larc

Do parents sign a confidentiality agreement? If not, I don’t know how you could blame the contestant for what their parents do.

My understanding is contestants are prohibited in the confidentiality agreement they sign from telling the non-public outcome of their audition to anybody who has not also signed a confidentiality agreement. If Michael Lynch’s father had signed an agreement himself, he voided his son’s position by breaking it. If he had not signed an agreement, then Michael violated his agreement by telling his father. In either case, Michael is toast unless AI decides to overlook the violation. If they do, of course, that would set a precedent that could affect other confidentiality violations.

  • windmills

Oh man, this is brutal if Michael Lynche’s father ruined this for him.

  • larc

Wow!!!! That is just to bad. Did they show Michael Lynche and Antwan Michael’s audition yet?

Michael auditioned in Orlando and Antwan in Boston. I don’t believe either audition was shown.

Interestingly, Antwan said in his Golden Ticket interview that his favorite type of music is Country!

  • girlygirl

This has happened before…wasn’t it Justin Williams friend or family member that broke the confidentiality agreement last season — resulting in his disqualification? I think the confidentiality agreement applies to at least the contestants family members — not just the person him/herself

I’m sure the parents have to sign the agreement if the contestant is a minor. But, they probably askt he parents of the adult contestants to sign as well. either way, it doesn’t really matter – the only way for a parent to find out the kid made the Top 24 is for their kid to tell them. So, the contestant has already violated his confidentiality agreement.

It’s one of those reality shows when the people win and they have to keep it a secret for months from everyone, including their parents.

I’m sure the AI agreement doesn’t include a clause that says “you can’t tell anyone where you ended up, well, except for your mom and dad”.

  • maturin

Poor Michael! We haven’t even seen him audition and he’s Already Gone.

I guess that 19E feels like they need to make an example of someone from time to time. The “surprise” of the Hollywood and chairs ep would be totally eroded if hometown papers and the like frequently wrote stories before the audition episodes aired.

Still, how horrible. Everyone certainly tells their spouses/SO/parents and in many cases employers, since they have to rearrange their life. You might be able to take a week off, for Hollywood round, without telling many people, but for everyone who makes the semifinals, you have to put work/school/lease etc on hold for what might be anything from two weeks to several months to (for those who make the summer tour) 8 months . . . or forever.

So contestants are relying on a lot of people’s discretion. I kind of think the Tampa/St. Pete paper sucked for running the item. There may be more to it, but the father appears only to have confirmed the news because the paper appeared to already know the facts.

    Look how they put it:
“St. Petersburg native Michael Lynche is among the top 24 semifinalists on Fox TV’s blockbuster singing competition American Idol, according to relatives and two fan Web sites tracking the show. ”

“Lynche’s father, Marque Lynche Sr., confirmed that his 26-year-old son had survived the “Hollywood round” of auditions filmed last week in Los Angeles — where singers plucked from the location tryouts are whittled down to 24 semifinalists.”

Makes it sound like some local got the lowdown on spoilers (from lots of sites on the internet, like this one) and alerted the paper, and the paper just asked Dad to hey, this is true, right? Maybe he got confused–if they told him the news was already “public”, should he deny it?

I guess the answer is yes, and one would hope families are given some written guidelines telling them exactly what to do. It’s a little harsh to ask them to be totally media savvy. From the way the story is written, the reporter appears to have no clue that he’s disqualifying the kid by publishing it.

  • larc

From the way the story is written, the reporter appears to have no clue that he’s disqualifying the kid by publishing it.

Publishing such things without having sufficient background knowledge is irresponsible. Not saying the St. Pete Times is guilty of this, but some publications are more interested in news than in propriety. They will often print things no matter what and let the chips fall where they may.

  • CFIdolsfan

I can suspect the St. Pete Times of what you are suggesting. I have seen some of their posts on line about Idols, and they are often disparaging and snarky. That is a shame that he got disqualified. Maybe the dad should have said something like, “I cannot divulge anything,” or “You will have to wait to see the show,” or something like that.

  • shell29

Aw, I feel bad for Michael. I really liked him too…sorry to see him be disqualified. I really don’t blame him much for this-I mean, how many of the Top 24 are able to keep that sort of thing from their parents prior to the episodes airing? I’d bet most of the parents already know that they’re in (haven’t we seen some of them call their folks immediately after they’ve received the good news from the judges?). I know his dad must feel awful now. He probably wasn’t even thinking when he let it slip that Mike was in.

The St Pete paper really screwed up. I would have thought they’d know better than to publish a spoiler like that before the Top 24 selection show airs, but I guess not.

  • Mtlfan

I’m sorry for Michael. It really sucks for him. Reading his bio, he was certainly ready for the idol journey. Well, if he’s still interested next year, he can go again for it since he’ll be 27 or 28

  • MalwareDie

According to his brother, Ben Honeycutt was eliminated during the group Round and is not part of the Top 24 after all.

  • J9BT

“I kind of think the Tampa/St. Pete paper sucked for running the item. There may be more to it, but the father appears only to have confirmed the news because the paper appeared to already know the facts.”

ITA. In reading the article, it appears as though Michael’s mom used to work at this newspaper before she died in 2004 of pancreatic cancer, so who knows what would have possessed him to disclose this – there could have been bad blood between the reporter and his mom, or bad blood between her colleagues at the paper and Michael’s dad (trying to get him in trouble), or any other reason. I do think that any responsible newspaper reporter would understand the confidentiality agreement.

I also know first hand that the contestants and their parents are well schooled in the confidentiality rules. A year ago from this past December I met Michael Castro and told him I heard he made it to Hollywood for S8, and he just smiled and said he wasn’t allowed to say anything. His mom said the same thing. At the S5 tour for SYTYCD, I met Ryan Kasprzk (sp? Evan’s bro), along with his parents, and told him I was looking forward to seeing him in S6. He said very politely that he wasn’t allowed to talk about it at all, so he couldn’t comment on what I said. Unless Michael is estranged from his Dad (but then why would he know he made it?), his Dad should have known the rules.

  • smartcookie

His father’s name is Marque Lynche, Sr? There was a Marque Lynche who tried out in S3 and got booted with Lisa Leuschner, during the wild card show where they told certain people to just go home and not even sing. It was so nasty. He was totally hot and could sing — he’d been in The Lion King on Broadway — and he couldn’t believe they called him back for the wild card and then didn’t even let him sing. I always hoped he came out the other side and did something spectacular. That would be weird, if Marque Lynche were Michael Lynche’s brother.

  • J9BT

  • gangreen29

I hope Ben isn’t in it. I can already tell his fans were going to be the super annoying group this year. His vibrato was out of control and that was just on the videos of him sitting in his bedroom with his guitar, can you imagine how bad it would be with the nerves that come from performing on idol? Think Matt Giraud but worse.

  • larc

Somebody says something over here and everybody jumps to a conclusion. Then somebody else says something over there and everybody jumps to another conclusion. • sbalk017

Ben didn’t make it now? Sad, I really liked him… But I was wondering why his Youtube videos hadn’t been taken down. I don’t really like the rest of the top 24, there’s too much R&B and I don’t like it as much on Idol cause it always sounds old and not current. Guess I’ll wait till the semis to pick a favorite…

  • tierbee

MJ and others should keep searching for those actually involved in Hollywood Week to learn the truth.

Eh, it’s fun to speculate anyway. We’ll know soon enough ;)

I feel bad for Michael if he got cut for violating his agreement BUT… I can understand why Idol doesn’t want it to leak, that would put a big hitch in the drama of Hollywood week!

  • sbalk017

I wouldn’t be surprised if quite a few of these are wrong. I don’t feel very confident that this list is entirely right.

I’m with you there. Idol likes to “cast” the top 24 but I can’t see them leaving out so many of the featured auditions… plus a lot of the girls are so similar, with the singer/songwriter indie-pop vibe. Plus, I really can’t see them cutting Angela like that unless she totally screwed up in Hollywood… but then again, the DRAMA!

I should stop checking the spoilers and just wait three more weeks till the Green Mile epsiode…

  • s0x_prisoner

Aw darn… I really like Ben. Hopefully the spoilers are wrong >.<

Michael is Marque’s brother, according to the SP Times:

If true, Lynche would be the second family member to do well on the show; his brother Marque Lynche Jr. advanced to the show’s semifinals in 2004 but was cut from the competition before the final 12 performers were selected.

Where was Ben Honeycutt’s brother quoted?

    I also do like Charity.

God, are they saving Chris Golightly for the “best auditions”? I have a feeling I’ll really really not like him based on the type of music he made (that dance song) and calling himself “Orphan”.

  • chessguy99

I know he already had a nice fanbase growing over on ontd_ai!

Ben has a nice fanbase all over. IMO, its a small group of hardcore fans that belong to many Idol sites, that are pushing him. His fanlisting at the Scary Boards is the largest, but its basically 5-6 people quoting each others posts to keep the thread at the top.

  • MawMaw

Several of those 5-6 are notorious for flooding the boards for their contestant. LOL I really don’t care if Ben is in or out. I thought he was mediocre at best, but that’s just my opinion. I certainly wasn’t taken by his looks. Look wise Justin Williams was my favorite, but he definitely appears to be out. I wouldn’t vote for looks anyway or I would have gotten corpal tunnel in S5 voting for Ace. LOL

I don’t remember this much confusion in the past about the spoilers, but I usually didn’t start following them till later and as late as they picked them this year is what I think is causing all this changing.

I prefer the top 24 to the top 36 for the most part, but the only thing that would have been better with a top 36 is we would have more contestants to vote for to be in the top 12.

  • MawMaw

I’m happy they went back to 24 and PLEASE Idol, NO themes till top 12! I want to hear what kind of music they plan on doing after Idol.

  • gangreen29

I’m happy they went back to 24 and PLEASE Idol, NO themes till top 12!

Yes please!! I hated the themes in season 7. This is a chance for the contestants to really show who they are without restrictions, as a sort of introduction to America.

  • Justin8602

I’m happy they went back to 24 and PLEASE Idol, NO themes till top 12! I want to hear what kind of music they plan on doing after Idol.

I agree, I was just re-watching S7 and making them do 60′s 70′s and 80′s was kind of a trainwreck for some of them. I hope they just have it be pick whatever you want to sing for the semi’s. Judging that many of the contestants seem to be on the younger side (meaning not an overabundance of late 20′s idols), they may really struggle with having to pick from specific decades only on specific weeks in the semi’s

  • MawMaw

Some of my favorite performances have been in those shows with the smaller stage. In fact, my all time fav was Daughtry with the Fuel song and he wouldn’t have been able to sing it with the stupid themes those weeks. That’s the night I was hooked for life on him. LOL

  • itsalleternal

I do agree it is probably mostly right, but spoiler lists should always be taken with a grain of salt. Those who have been consistently on the list are probably the most reliable.

  • glamfan

i wanna see the mystery boy #12. but the last thing i need is another idol crush.

  • wonderings

Wouldn’t it be rather awesome if they didn’t release the name of the unknown final guy? He could wear a mask and call himself Idol X or Enigmo or maybe even Phantom of the Idol!

People would vote for him just because it was different and fun. Some would love it and some would hate, but people would talk, which for the show equals love…as long as it didn’t go too far.

If everything is confidential and one guy apparently got disqualified for not honoring the confidentiality agreement, then how did the list of 24 finalists get out?

Who’s telling? Production workers? Aren’t they in danger of being fired?

I don’t get how one guy gets disqualified for not honoring the confidentiality agreement when there are lists on the internet that are probably fairly accurate of successful finalists; what is confidential at this point? Not much!

It seems like Idol enforces their rules somewhat capriciously.

However, I’m not invested in any of them and don’t plan to be. I’m just watching the show for fun this year.

I only remember 3 on the list by name, I’d have to see a picture to remember the rest. Regardless, I’m not losing any sleep over it. I think I’m more interested in the upcoming Amazing Race than Idol at this point, but I’ll always watch Idol (I think!).

  • Justin8602

From what I can gather Mike’s father confirmed to a major media source that his son made the top 24, at least he did if the article written wasn’t completely made up. Since they can clearly trace this back to Mike telling his family about, you get disqualification. As for why the rest are not being disqualified, I would assume that there is no actual evidence of them breaching their gag order. So the leaks cannot be traced to any individual.

My most educated guess as to where these leaks are coming from, is through various people involved in production, ie just random crew, maybe an intern or a grunt or cameraman. I’m sure there are many crewman that are lower level enough to get away with secretly stashing notes. I believe in past seasons some people who made the top 24 just e-mailed a list to the people they knew were looking for spoilers. It seems no such luck with that scenario this year though.

  • KellysDecember

Well for what’s it’s worth on Ben Honeycutt’s music myspace all of his music has been taken down.

Disgruntled contestants, and family/friends of contestants are also good sources for leaks.

Sometimes the contestants themselves leak the info, believing that getting their name out there before the competition begins will help build a fan base.

How did we survive the first few seasons without Spoilers? ;o)

  • Valentin432

On the girl side, the trio of Didi, Janell and Katelyn reminds me a little bit of season 7′s Alaina Whitaker/Kady Malloy/Brooke White.
I hope for their sake that will do better but I don’t see the idol audience voting for a handfull of this type of contestant.

If I had to guess then I think that Didi will exit in the first two weeks (granted I haven’t seen much of her yet), Janell will be an early “shocker” boot with the judges hating on the results and Katelyn will be the one to go far.

  • rayni

and PLEASE Idol, NO themes till top 12! I want to hear what kind of music they plan on doing after Idol.

I agree. I would even go so far as to say – NO THEMES EVAH! Put a pool of cleared songs in a hat, let them pull one out and sang it to me. I don’t need a theme to know if I like how you sing. Themes is old and stoopid.

  • Kate8

There is a rumor on Joe’s place that Todrick Hall is in the top 24.

  • bigjr6633

How did we survive the first few seasons without Spoilers? ;o)

Well I think those first few seasons ppl weren’t consumed with trying to find spoilers. I think with the show becoming bigger over the years spoilers began popping up more and more.

There is a rumor on Joe’s place that Todrick Hall is in the top 24.

Someone mentioned on IDF that they talked to Todrick Hall’s music teacher who said he was in the top 24. I took it with a grain of salt but it seems like it might be true

I really hope Mike isn’t cut. With listening to his music and hearing all these great things about him he’s brings something different and interesting to the show. Definately something Idol hasn’t had before.

  • MalwareDie

Ben is confirmed out for sure. Jermaine Sellers MAY or may not be the Jermaine that is actually in the Top 24. Todrick Hall is likely in the top 24.

  • Grammie Kari

MalwareDie, there are going to be many fans upset with this conclusion. Ben has a lot of fans which may add to his popularity even though Idol isn’t on his agenda. He’ll be able to try out again or go for the X-Factor audition.

Has anyone read Todrick Hall’s MySpace account. It seems this young man has already made his mark. What a terrific resume with quite a line-up of professional experience. It seems he loves working with kids, is talented, and a cute guy. Just what TPTB would love to see in their TOP 12.

That would still leave one more opening on the guy’s list.

I totally remember Todrick Hall. His production of The Wizard of Oz was a total clusterf*ck.

Diana DeGarmo does NOT have good things to say about Toddrick…or her experience of working on his production.

I don’t think so – especially if they want a girl to win – the cute guy could get in the way.

  • windmills

Oh man based on that link MJ posted people are going to have a field day with Todrick Hall if he makes the top 24. That report makes him out to be all kinds of shady. I’m surprised AI would want anything to do with him.

  • Parabola

I read about the Todrick Hall stuff here a few weeks ago. How could TPTB not know about it? Is their research staff not thorough or was he let through on purpose? Maybe they know the media will “discover” his dealings and turn it into a controversy (aka free publicity for the show).

  • chearts77

If it’s true that Todrick has grabbed that last spot…it only makes it more obvious they are desperately aiming for a female winner this season. They’ve got to know about his “scammy” ways. Once it gets out into the public and the parents start showing up on news stations about how Todrick scammed them, not many will want to vote for him. He’s an easy out and helps TPTB’s cause for this year…”We must crown a lady in May”.

  • cookcricket

The one person who has been reported in the top 24 who I absolutely love based on the info. we have is Crystal Bowersox.

  • MawMaw

Is anyone else not getting into JoesPlace today?

  • Valentin432

If it’s true that Todrick has grabbed that last spot…it only makes it more obvious they are desperately aiming for a female winner this season.

So far they have shown only 3 of the girls full audition and 5 of the guys, so they are not really helping the girls all that much.
I don’t care what Todrick did before idol, as long as he sings well and brings it to the stage I would be glad to see him on the show.

  • Grammie Kari

Thank you, MJ for the link on Todrick Hall. Obviously, his MySpace is going to be a positive protrayal. I really didn’t want to see Todrick go on to the TOP 24 because of all his professional experience. He has accomplished too much, but that was before I knew about this scandal.

It seems we are seeing less and less good contestants, and tonight’s show was a major disappointment!

  • Adamdebomb

Maw Maw: Yes, I can’t get into Joes place, and am getting a strange message that my server is blocking it. Never gotten such a message before. (“illegal site”) or some such. Like I was trying to break into a military facility. haha

Joes said something in chat the other night about changing servers. Maybe that’s all it is.

I just saw this over at VFTW, in reference to Todrick Hall. This is Diana DeGarmo’s delicate but telling statement about working on Oz! The Musical, from back in September of 2009. Keep in mind Diana is usually very positive about everything:

“I signed on for a little touring show called Oz: The Musical, which was—well, it was interesting…”

“I was fortunate. I made fabulous friends. But there were issues with the production as a whole. I knew leaving [the tour] would be the best thing to do, but I didn’t want to let my cast members down. The good of the group is more important than how I’m feeling as an individual. I’m happy I stuck it out because we had a good time onstage, which balanced out the behind-the-scenes issues.”

Sorry I missed this among my tweets this morning. Pretty sure this means Ben was indeed cut

benhoneycutt Thanks a billion to all my friends and fans for your support and encouragement! I’m seriously blown away. Seriously. about 13 hours ago from web

  • gangreen29

So we have only seen 10 of the top 24 auditions so far, and I think only three auditioned in denver. So are we going to be seeing a stacked best of the rest episode, or are we going to go through the auditions with only seeing around half of the top 24?

  • hicksaholic

Somebody has probably already mentioned this somewhere but there appears to be several Latino contestants this year . Wonder if TPTB are looking to cash in on that market.

How many more auditions before Hollywood? I am getting bored.

  • SpenserJ

I’m interested to see how America responds to Todrick, the Munchkin Scammer.

  • hicksaholic

Y’all hear that Carrie is singing the NA at the Superbowl? She gets all the good gigs!

  • Buckeyegirl

Ryan had Angela Martin on this morning, talking about her missing Mom…and they have posted the story at Ryans website, referring to Angela as a Top 24 contestant. Aside from the surprise that Idol would okay saying she is a Top 24 vs Hollywood week contestant at this stage, was she ever rumored to have been in the top 24? (She’s not listed now.)

    http://www.ryanseacrest.com/blog/whats-happening/american-idol-top-24-contestant-seeking-missing-mother/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

Really? How is Tasha Layton not on this list?

  • Grammie Kari

If Idol wants to make a whole bunch of fans happy, they would put in Ben Honeycutt as his replacement. OTOH, if they do indeed want a girl to win, they would shy away from someone who already has a huge fan base. Although, looking at that list, Ben didn’t make the TOP 50.

I hope they don’t drag it out and let Todrick into the TOP 24, and then DQ’d him.

Maybee, but that also describes Katie, Haeley or John.
The producers will use Hollywood week to establish the frontrunners, so we’ll have a better idea next week.

Maybee, but that also describes Katie, Haeley or John.

They also showed Andrew Garcia at least twice. It will definitely be interesting to see who they decide are truly TCOs.

Looking at the list of Top 24ers, I think they showed all but 5 of their auditions. I wonder if any of these five will be shown in Hollywood, or become one of the illustrious few that receive ZERO airtime. In S7 there were 4. I’m not sure about last year (maybe more bc of the format?), but I know that Allison was one of the “never shown.”

I’ll calling the top 12 now, officially:

    Aaron Kelly
    Alex Lambert
    Andrew Garcia
    Ashley Rodriguez
    Chris Golightly
    Didi Benami
    Haeley Vaughn
    Jermaine Sellers
    Katie Stevens

    Michael Lynche
    Siobhan Magnus

    I’m feeling pretty confident. :)

I like the name Alex lambert.a combination of my favorite idol’s lat name and my crush’s first name…

  • Justin8602

Allison was one of the “never shown.”

Actually, I just rewatched the S8 auditions about a week ago and she was actually shown very briefly about a minute or 2 before they did Adam’s segment in the San Francisco audition episode. I can’t say it was anything major or remotely in-depth, but she was definitely shown, at least briefly. Not that this matters at all, just wanted to point it out.’

I’m not blown away by anyone this year so far, my favorites are Tyler Grady, Lee Dewyze, Katie Stevens and Aaron Kelly. And I honestly only included Aaron, because he has the Archuleta appeal. I would bet my bottom dollar that Aaron will be a contender for the idol title, simply based on he has grandma and tween girl appeal.

  • iluvai

I like several of these top 24! That’s a relief. I think I’m going to enjoy the journey with these lucky ones.

So now thanks to groups we have seen everyone sing except for Jose Munoz. I would be pissed off if I were him lol.

They seem to play hide and seek with the camera.
Sometimes he is lucky and catches her but most of the time she’s just too quick for him.

Joke aside, AI has done a good job so far in presenting all the top 24, there’s still two shows and three hours of Hollywood week so it’s probably that Jose will apear and hopefully sing one lyric or two.
In past seasons their were always a handfull of contestants that didn’t get shown at all.

  • Grammie Kari

I was looking for Jose (Joe) Munoz, but not yet. I don’t count the 5 seconds of exposure by Michelle Delamor, Siobhan Magnus, and Paige Miles as performances. I’d like to hear more from them and less from others.

  • larc

According to info at IdolForums and JoesPlaceBlog, it now appears likely that Chris Golightly has either withdrawn or been disqualified and has been replaced by Tim Urban. Reports are that Tim was cut after a sing off with John Park, so he would logically be among the first in line to replace somebody.

There is no news on why Chris might be out.

  • milajoy

MJ: Tim Urban may have replaced Chris GoLightly at the last minute. I emailed you earlier. I am not 100% though, cause I have not be able to get a hold of my source…….

    F**K YEAH!!!!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/maxsmom61 CathyMK

Finally, a brief Joe Munoz sighting last night.

I’m surprised about Tim Urban being the one to replace Orphan, if it turns out to be true. Orphan, while annoying in a Danny Gokey too-much-backstory sort of way, can actually sing, while Tim seems very mediocre. I can only assume he’ll be cannon fodder. Still, he sang a David Cook song, so I may have to throw him a few votes next week!
