Philip Phillips Featured in the New American Idol Promo (VIDEO)

It starts with a dream, ya’ll. It’s how a laid back son of a Georgia pawn shop owner can become a superstar overnight! Well, that’s the meme more or less. In reality, American Idol can promise stardom to its winners–at least in the short term.

The incredible success of winner Phillip Phillip’s coronation single, “Home”–it’s now officially double platinum and charting in 5 radio formats, including the never before cracked by Idols Adult Alternative–allows Idol to use their latest winner for bragging rights. And to remind new shiny contenders like The Voice that the mother ship may have suffered some ratings setbacks, but can STILL produce alums who go on to succeed in the music business.

I love it! Check out the new promo below.

Love this. Yup. Idol is still the gold standard (or platinum, I should say) for ALL singing competitions :)

  • Valentin432

Gread to see Idol promoting the show via the contestans and not the judges, that’s what makes it different from the rest.

  • tierbee

That’s some awesome promo right there. Love it :)

Fox Unveils Midseason Game Plan Sets Dates For American Idol,
    Touch and The Following

“will launch with with a two-night debut on Wednesday, Jan. 16 (8-10 pm) and
    Thursday, Jan. 17 (8-9 pm).”

  • Brittany Keener

I may dislike Phillip….despite loving “Home” but I take massive PRIDE in any and all Idol Alums’ success! On that note, I LOVE THIS!!!!!

    Is it January yet?

  • tucker davis

You gotta love this story! He really was just an unknown small town boy this time last year destined for an ‘ordinary life’ in rural southwest Georgia where not much is going on (I can say this because I’m from there), and now he’s doing what he loves: making music, traveling, meeting famous people, and having all sorts of experiences that are not available back home. It may not last forever, but it’s certainly a ride for now! Thanks American Idol!

  • fantoo1

I’m glad they are using this and not the new judges(or their fights!)

  • rayni

    THIS….is American Idol!

Love it! But still don’t think I’m gonna be able to watch it :(

  • fuzzywuzzy

Not surprised that Idol is playing up the “Cinderella” aspect of P2’s journey as well as the commercial success of “Home”. It’s a great example of the image of fulfilling dreams that Idol has promoted since it started.

  • fantoo1

Give it a chance and you might be pleasantly surprised :)

  • thirdtime

    I LOVE this commercial!

  • fuzzywuzzy

Oh, I think that it may be a little early to assume that Idol won’t have a promo on the new judges (which focuses on conflicts).

  • thirdtime

I’m sure the other singing competition shows would have similar commercials, if they had any alum successes to brag about.

  • kaylietoo

Yay for Phillip getting all this promotion.  He clearly deserves it, and I love that he’s the same humble boy from Georgia.

  • Eric Mitchell

This is awesome but it’s still only a matter of time until they let the judges take over. This reminds me of those promos they did with all the Idol winners a few years ago. They should keep doing stuff like this.

  • lovetheusa1776

Absolutely terrific promo – and, yes – good to see promotion of the performers – not the judges.  After the long, disappointing months of appointing the panel it makes me want to watch the show again.  Smart

  • Eric Ascher

I think that X Factor, at least internationally, has produced stars too. Not as many as Idol, but I expect that to change over time. The Voice is the only show that has produced nobody. And that is why I really don’t watch it as much as X Factor or to a lesser extent Idol. My problem with idol was the judges-they were way too nice and never had a bad thing to say about anyone. Randy’s still there, which sucks, but hopefully the other three judges will be constructive and make me want to watch again.

I want to apologize for my bad English and I don’t mean to offend, but…
In my country there is a joke about a man who every day going to the temple to pray. He asked God that he helped him win the lottery a lot of money. He came to the temple every day and finally parishioners tired, and they all prayed, that the person has won and left them. And God answered their prayer: “Let he buys at least one ducket!”
I want to say that XF decided not to spend money on the ducket, and the Voice did not come to the temple.

    to Eric Ascher:
“Randy’s still there, which sucks, but hopefully the other three judges will be constructive and make me want to watch again.”
I believe in Santa Claus and Tooth Fairy.

One hit song does not make one a “Superstar.”

  • Mateja Praznik

Well, X Factor UK brought One Direction on the first live show just to show them off. They sold 3 million albums, 1 million DVDs and 8 million singles in less than a year.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“One hit song does not make one a “Superstar.”

True, but Idol doesn’t even need one hit song to refer to one of their winners as a “superstar” (Ryan introduced Lee as a “superstar” when he appeared on Idol). lol

  • angiedb

Fantastic promo! I absolutely love to see the kids on Idol succeed and love even more that Idol is actually promoting the show in this way! So very ready for January. X Factor and The Voice just don’t do it for me. :)

  • John S

LOL well to be fair I did hear Lee’s song on the radio a few times. And once at the mall.

  • thirdtime

Ahhh…they just showed this commercial during the World Series before Phillip sings…very smart move.

  • CB40

GREAT promo. Idol has one thing the other U.S. shows don’t — CHART SUCCESS.

  • auntmable

I’ll bet NBC producers are bitting their fingernails over this nice promo, they need kudos for promoting their winners, Great job, I think that’s why Idol is still the #1 singing competition!!!! We never hear of the other winners, I guess after the show is over they just don’t care what happens to their contestants!!!!!!

  • Tyson

I like the promo.  It appeals to people who want to see an ordinary person with great talent fulfill a dream.  The promo will also appeal to musicians who want to fulfill a dream.

The producers want to make money.  This isn’t PBS.  It’s a for-profit venture.  The same is true of the producers of NCIS, Modern Family and Honey Boo Boo.

That said, I think the purpose of the show is to help artists do more than they can do themselves.  I am on mailing lists for acts you don’t know but who can sell 10,000 units–a little at a time through small shows and social media.  If The Voice and X Factor’s top finishers can’t do better than people who don’t appear on national TV, then what’s the point of auditioning for those shows?

  • fantoo1

The Voice would probably just show Adam and Blake in their promos instead since they “won” the first two seasons lol :)

  • fantoo1

Too bad the US version doesn’t have any bragging rights for their contestants. You know it’s bad when they had to use Leona, One Direction, and Cher Lloyd to talk about their accomplishments on the premiere-why not use Melanie or Chris? They must be embarrassed…

  • getaway1

I think it’s a pretty safe bet that Phil will be back to perform on Idol next season as well as come back on the finale.  Very nice video!

  • fuzzywuzzy

I saw a different promo early in the game, with past winners and a bit of P2, but the background music was “Home”.

  • OffLeash

I’m really curious to find out where his team plans to have him premiere his second single. Any rumors?

  • lovetheusa1776

Really like MJ’s metaphor – Idol as the “mother ship.”  Just great.

  • Jcasa12

Congrats to Phillip…. why do i get the feeling that the tweenies are looking for a male equivalent of Taylor Swift in AI all these years….

  • Eric Mitchell

I saw that one too. Anyone have video of that one?
