It starts with a dream, ya’ll. It’s how a laid back son of a Georgia pawn shop owner can become a superstar overnight! Well, that’s the meme more or less. In reality, American Idol can promise stardom to its winners–at least in the short term.

The incredible success of winner Phillip Phillip’s coronation single, “Home”–it’s now officially double platinum and charting in 5 radio formats, including the never before cracked by Idols Adult Alternative–allows Idol to use their latest winner for bragging rights. And to remind new shiny contenders like The Voice that the mother ship may have suffered some ratings setbacks, but can STILL produce alums who go on to succeed in the music business.

I love it! Check out the new promo below.

I’ll bet NBC producers are bitting their fingernails over this nice promo, they need kudos for promoting their winners, Great job, I think that’s why Idol is still the #1 singing competition!!!! We never hear of the other winners, I guess after the show is over they just don’t care what happens to their contestants!!!!!!

I like the promo.  It appeals to people who want to see an ordinary person with great talent fulfill a dream.  The promo will also appeal to musicians who want to fulfill a dream.

The producers want to make money.  This isn’t PBS.  It’s a for-profit venture.  The same is true of the producers of NCIS, Modern Family and Honey Boo Boo.

That said, I think the purpose of the show is to help artists do more than they can do themselves.  I am on mailing lists for acts you don’t know but who can sell 10,000 units–a little at a time through small shows and social media.  If The Voice and X Factor’s top finishers can’t do better than people who don’t appear on national TV, then what’s the point of auditioning for those shows?

The Voice would probably just show Adam and Blake in their promos instead since they “won” the first two seasons lol :)

Too bad the US version doesn’t have any bragging rights for their contestants. You know it’s bad when they had to use Leona, One Direction, and Cher Lloyd to talk about their accomplishments on the premiere-why not use Melanie or Chris? They must be embarrassed…

I think it’s a pretty safe bet that Phil will be back to perform on Idol next season as well as come back on the finale.  Very nice video!

I saw a different promo early in the game, with past winners and a bit of P2, but the background music was “Home”.

I’m really curious to find out where his team plans to have him premiere his second single. Any rumors?

Really like MJ’s metaphor – Idol as the “mother ship.”  Just great.
