Paul McDonald & Nikki Reed Record Duet – Now That I Found You – LISTEN

Ryan Seacrest debuted the new song from Paul McDonald and his wife, Twilight star, Nikki Reed on his KIIS FM radio show this morning.

The duo wrote “Now That I Found You” together, with Paul writing the melody and Nikki penning the lyrics. Recorded just two days ago, the couple hit the studio with producer Andre Harris, an industry vet who has worked with everyone from Michael Jackson to Mariah Carey to Usher.

“Now That I Found You” is set to hit iTunes this week.

Listen below. What do you think?  It’s pleasant, but sounds like a song that would end up as a bonus track on an album–kind of a throwaway.

Paul sounds good — Nikki not so much. I wonder if they’ll try to send this to AAA, because that’s the format it would fit.

The song is not bad, but I agree that it seems more like an album track than a single

  • Emmy

They should probably take a little time to correct his pitch. Even then I’d still hate it.

  • Anonymous

I actually really like it. Thought I wouldn’t because I wasn’t so sure about Paul doing a duet with Nikki, who I had no idea any musical talent, would be that great but damn I just enjoy Paul’s voice and what he brings. I’ll buy it

It is pleasant to listen to.  The melody is catchy the words weak at times but not bad.  All in all I liked it.  Paul is such a unique performer I usually really like or really dislike what he sings.

  • rayni

Well!  I really like it – maybe it’s because I’m so aware of their story and it adds to it’s indie-pop preciousness.  I could definitely listen to an album of this.  WTG Paul and Nikki!

  • AllenTX

Not bad. I like Paul’s voice and style. His music would fit in those little indie movie quite well. Nikki’s singing is pretty average though.

  • GS61

That was quite sweet. I’m happy for them.

I liked it. It’s nice to listen to, but I don’t expect it to make much of an impact. Paul’s best bet is to go back to his band, since they already had a local following, and to build on that.

  • CSFan

It’s sort of sweet in it’s lovesick cheesiness. It might make a good wedding song. I wish they’d taken more time with it because it really sounds rough and unpolished but hey, when do these two EVER take their time on something?

And since Paul and Nikki have thrown down the couples duet gauntlet…ok, Ace Young and Diana Degarmo, your move. ;)

I agree with lili_anne7.  It’s certainly pleasant enough but unlikely to resonate much with anyone other than Twilight fans.  Paul needs to get back to his indie rock roots, that’s where he really shines.  And btw, his duet from earlier this year with Kendra Chantelle, “Like You Loved Me Then,” is so much more beautiful and evocative, and so much less cliche…Kendra’s got a beautiful voice to boot that really jibed with Paul’s sound.  I’m afraid this whole thing kinda reminds me of the Paul/Linda McCartney, John/Yoko Ono dynamic.  Domestic partners who shouldn’t be in a recording studio.  Bleh.

  • Tinawina

    It’s cute.:)

  • Anonymous

well domestic singing partnerships work fine if both partners are actually singers — Faith Hill & Tim McGraw for example. :)

  • Adolf Hipster

Are they trying to copy Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova? Not gonna work.

I like it too.  Paul isn’t technically the best singer but he has a really unique sound to him, which I like because he doesn’t sound like every other male singer out there today.

  • ronaldmascot

This is absolutely terrible.  He mumbles, it’s barely a duet, she is more of a back-up singer.  The melody is a horrible mish-mash.  I admit, one part of me does think it’s sweet and it’s nice they are so in love, but the cynical side of me also thinks she should not be doing such a half-a@@ed thing like this and it could across as him just using her to get more exposure- not that it’s true, but if this fails and get bad feedback, she herself could start resenting it and then the love story could be over very quickly.  But this is just awful- and expecting people to buy it?

  • CanadianLady

I tend to agree with you. But then I was never a fan of his voice. Nice story, but had to stop listening…

A sweet song-makes me happy that they are so happy. I agree Nikki is just a backup singer on this-I doubt she is aiming for a recording career.
I find Paul’s voice-and vibe-very appealing. I hope he continues to record with his band.

  • JJ123

That was really cute!  I don’t know what it is but I’ve always like Paul’s voice, there’s just a cool uniqueness to it that works for me.  I still listen to the Grand Magnolias CD on my ipod, that’s good stuff.

  • Nick Peterson

Meh, I’ll stick to the far superior duo, Jack & White…

“It’s certainly pleasant enough but unlikely to resonate much with anyone other than Twilight fans.”

True, I think. But, as all of us Idol fans know, they won’t be the first to figure they may score a little cash by selling souvenirs. heh

I like it.  Love Paul’s voice, and vibe.  Nikki’s voice adds a little more texture to the sound.  Nice.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Is Nikki a singer?  This seems to me more like the kind of cute, casual song that would be uploaded to youtube just for fun, not a formally recorded song to be sold on iTunes.  The harmonies were pretty bad (made me cringe in their pitchiness).  I can see how Paul’s voice would appeal to some, but I’m not a fan.  To be honest, I don’t think that this song would have debuted on Ryan’s show if Nikki weren’t a part of it.

  • ShreddingHalien

I like it. It’s not the usual thing you’d get from an Idol and that in itself makes it good.

  • Nele621

Paul sounds like an old man. Nikki didn’t sound more than just a backup singer. The song? meh

  • Landmd

Cute song! I love Paul’s voice, Nikki was ok. Get back with your band Paul!!

” To be honest, I don’t think that this song would have debuted on Ryan’s show if Nikki weren’t a part of it.”

Them that’s got shall get, as they say.

  • shamrock

I think it’s more cute than great.

I like Paul’s voice (actually he was my first favourite during Hollywood, till others took over), but I don’t think his and Nikki’s voice mesh very well.

  • Anonymous

it’s sweet. i like Paul recording voice

  • Anonymous

I like Paul and love his voice, but this song is far from his best work.  I can’t see this taking off.

If you like the vibe of this song, check out “Like You Love Me Then,” the duet Paul did with Kendra Chantelle. Now that’s an equal match on a beautifully penned song.

    Really, Paul?

Looks like the “best evah season” *whooping cough* wins for the batch with the most horrible first post-AI singles…evah!

  • Anonymous

Cute story behind the song. But it isn’t something I would download. They are a cute couple though.

  • shamrock

Oops, replied to the wrong posting…

  • shamrock

This is really gorgeous, and these are actually two voices that complement each other.

I already thought their “Blackbird” during Hollywood week was magic.

  • callmecrazy

I love them more as a couple than a singing duo….and it sounds like they would have sang this to each other in bed rather than in a studio.  You can barely hear Nikki…dunno if that is a good thing.  Regardless I think they are one happy sweet couple…:)

  • sagi

I think it is very cute professing their love and happiness in song! :)

  • DragonFly

Duets are the thing right now — sweet lyrics & nicely done.   I think it’s cute with just a splash of her voice harmonizing here & there.   Paul does have the Rod Stewart sound & that’s alright with me!

  • Anonymous

I like the song, but it sounds a little unfinished, rough, like a concert track.  Ind of odd.

  • Anonymous

The chorus is nice.  I like the harmonies.

    That’s the good points.

On the bad side, it’s poorly recorded….and sounds like it was banged out in someone’s home recording studio, while sucking back a few beers.

  • Anonymous

    Ouch! Not so much!

  • Susan

    Yep…. I still don’t like Paul’s voice.  Don’t think I’ll try again.

  • Bazzle

Are you referring to  ThisTime? LMMD? ILYTB? babyitscold? lovemebad? well they aren’t the best. But overall, 5 of them?! singles already. thats pretty decent. still best season in my eyes. actually i really like babyitscold but thats cos i like jazz.
But i’m still hopeful for haley, paul and pia as their albums havent been released yet. really like georgia peaches. and i wish that higherthanheaven and outofsummertime would have been the singles for james and scotty.

  • Kylee

Its in the eye of the beholder. I think Georgia Peaches is awesome and I personally like TTWG. They all beat “Sweet serendipity” for sure.

  • dodon

lol I have to agree. But somehow Scotty made ILYTB work.
