It is good to see all the idols doing good.
I’m happy to see Taylor Hicks at #27.
Did anyone see him on Regis this morning? :clap_tb:

  • Tess

Please, since Daughtry and Cook, bill themselves as “Rock” isn’t there a format for that genre. And, if so, has Cook (or Daughtry) ever made it into the top 50?

    Just sayin…..

Go ALTNOY, it is 35 at iTunes… iCarly Crush Night FTW…

  • SallyinIllinois

has anybody noticed that Spotlight by Jen-Hud is still on the charts? It’s been about what? 6 months? It has legs.

  • Lu

Shoot – I forgot about Taylor being on Regis! Did he sing anything other than WRIR? Doesn’t he have a vid coming out soon? Good for him that he’s back on the charts.

  • http://myspace.com/morganmadelynne marymagdalene

    Lu:
Taylor’s video for “What’s Right Is Right” is premiering on Yahoo! Videos sometime tomorrow, 2/17…

No, he did not sing anything on R&K, but the commercial that was filmed while he was in Baltimore was aired today…

  • Kirsten

Please, since Daughtry and Cook, bill themselves as à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Rockà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t there a format for that genre. And, if so, has Cook (or Daughtry) ever made it into the top 50?

There are three rock formats: Mainstream, Alternative and Active.

Daughtry’s album is winding down (it’s been out for over two years), so they aren’t doing much to promote it anymore (gearing up for the next one), but they have had success on the Rock formats. “It’s Not Over” went to 5 on the U.S. Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks (measures play on Mainstream Rock stations) and 19 on the U.S. Billboard Modern Rock Tracks (modern airplay, mostly Alternative). “Crashed” went to 24 on U.S. Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks. “What I Want” went to 6 on U.S. Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks. So, I think that one could argue that Rock stations do accept Daughtry as one of their own.

Thanks for the updated numbers, Kirsten. Good news for Taylor’s new release WRIR — Also saw it is #25 on the HAC chart or are these two different spots since they are two different charts.

  • stelladallas

I’ll be glad when “Here Comes Goodbye” (co-written by Chris Sligh) is available on itunes. I can’t get over what an amazing song it is. I think it is one of Rascal Flatts best songs, maybe THE best. Chris Sligh is one talented song writer and I think he has an instant classic on his hands.

  • luckeee55

I don’t believe Cook’s music has been played on any type of rock stations outside of a random spin here or there. Can someone verify if that is true and if so, why have rock stations shunned Cook’s music so far?

  • tinawina

I don’t think Light On has gotten more than a few spins on rock radio. Certainly not enough to chart. Who knows why that is… one could have many speculations, and they will likely be tied to whether you like Cook and/or the song. Heh. I’ve heard everything from the fact he won AI undermines his cred (as opposed to Daughtry, who actually looks more authentic since he got kicked off – he was too rawk for America!); that the song sucks; that Daughtry’s massive sales made PDs reluctantly add him, that DC is too pop and therefore a poseur, blah blah blah. We’ll see if it changes with subsequent singles.

  • Jolene

Can someone verify if that is true and if so, why have rock stations shunned Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s music so far?

    I’m having a wicked deja-vu here. Heh.
Since he’s selling well and charting well, it really doesn’t matter to me if one format doesn’t play him. It’s better for his sales and Audience impression if he can chart well on HAC (which, hey there LO at #4).
Cred? He’s the American Idol, there is no cred, but there are other things which sorta make up for it. and then some.

    Just MHO.

Awesome numbers for David Cook. :laugh_tb:

David Cook, The Record , certified Platinum… yeah! :clap_tb:

I think Jive needs to pull the plug on ALTNOY already. Wasn’t this week supposed to be the “big push” with iCarly and all? It just doesn’t seem to be doing anything at all. It’s been hovering in that 45-50ish range for so long and sales of the song have been horrid. I still think Barriers would be a big hit and it would be nice to have a new single before he goes out on tour.

  • leome

Speaking of ALTNOY, did they release Touch My Hands as second single to other countries? I’ve listened to it here on my side of the world, but they don’t play ALTNOY.
I understand they can pick whatever song they want to play, but I’m wondering if other countries are playing TMH, if it does anything to do with some Jive strategy or it’s just random and that radio station likes TMH more than ALTNOY.
For what’s worth I think TMH is a much better song (and single).

  • LK09

I think Jive needs to pull the plug on ALTNOY already.

Stations aren’t playing it yet for some reason. It could be because Crush is still doing well and getting played. ALTNOY is a great song, IMO, and is moving up, so I am exercising patience.

  • weareallinnocent

    Thanks for the updates, Kirsten~

Off topic, or just old topic :-) Did we ever get sales numbers from last week? I never saw them at Idol Chatter… Just trying to keep up. I know DCTR was #29, but I’m interested in the sales number too.

    Anyone? Anyone? TIA

  • shell29

I’ll say the same thing about ALTNOY that I said about LO (when there were some ready to stick a fork in that song early on), I think it’s still a bit too early to pull the plug. Part of the reason ALTNOY is where it is chart and saleswise is because many of the major markets like NYC or Atlanta still haven’t added the song to their playlists. I think once that happens (and I have a hard time believing that major markets will continue to steer clear of this song given the success of Crush), the chart movement and sales will pick up. The same thing happened with Light On-once airplay and exposure increased, the sales picked up as well. ALTNOY was never going to have the same rapid trajectory as Crush, but it seems to be moving in the right direction and it hasn’t lost its bullet. If that were to happen, then I would be concerned. I do agree about Barriers though-I would have preferred that as the second single, but if it’s single number three I’ll be just as happy.

Since heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s selling well and charting well, it really doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t matter to me if one format doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t play him.

Yeah, I’m not too concerned about rock cred for Cook either. As long as the sales are decent and steady, it’s all good. But what I would like to see is the second single perform better on CHR than Light On did. It’s nice to have AC and HAC hits, but if he is truly going to reach Kelly or Carrie status as a winner, I think he needs a pop hit (or two) under his belt along with that platinum album. The second single needs to be stronger in order to sustain those album sales, especially since he’s not going to have the same level of album promo going forward that he had back in November/December. I know the choices have probably been narrowed down to Lie, Declaration and Come Back To Me since those were the songs that were tested, but I really wish they’d go with Life On The Moon. I don’t know why, but something about that song just screams “hit” to me, similar to Archie’s Barriers (but you never know how these things will play out once they’re released to radio).

  • Trina

Didn’t Crush go recurrent on Top 40? Why would that impact how a 2nd single does? The same thing was said about LO when it seemed to be moving at snails pace, that TOML still doing well was preventing it from getting played. I just don’t buy it. But the way LO did eventually start moving up I think the same will happen with ALTNOY, I’m just not so sure there’s a clear cut reason why some songs may not necessarily take off right away.

FWIW I also don’t believe Z100 adding a song means it’s going to skyrocket all of a sudden. When they added TOML and LO it’s not like every other major market jumped all over them.

But what I would like to see is the second single perform better on CHR than Light On did. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s nice to have AC and HAC hits, but if he is truly going to reach Kelly or Carrie status as a winner, I think he needs a pop hit (or two) under his belt along with that platinum album.

Agreed. Having big hits on AC and HOT AC isn’t the reason Daughtry is stilling selling and has sold over 4 million albums.

  • noctem seizure

I don’t know if I’d kill the song yet. It seems to me that such an early termination might cause radio lose faith in him as a play-worthy artist and might push him in the direction one-hit-wonder status.

The odd thing, though, is that to me “A Little Too…” (still not typing it out) is a better song than Crush. Well, except for the “oh-ohs” after the chorus. That’s “a little too”… boybandish.

But,in general, I like that it’s more restrained than Crush. Crush is a cotton-candy kind of song. For a short while, it tastes good. But, pretty soon it’s just sickeningly-sweet.

  • tinawina

Didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Crush go recurrent on Top 40? Why would that impact how a 2nd single does?

A song going recurrent doesn’t mean stations are no longer spinning it, just that mediabase etc stop counting it in their charts. Some recurrent songs still get enough spins to make the top 40 chart if they were eligible. And since many stations won’t play more than one song by the same artist if they are new, it is certainly plausible IMO that stations may be reluctant to add anew song if the old one isn’t out of the way yet. I’m not saying that is happening for ALTNOY (or LO for that matter), but I do think it’s a possibility.

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s nice to have AC and HAC hits, but if he is truly going to reach Kelly or Carrie status as a winner, I think he needs a pop hit (or two) under his belt along with that platinum album.

Very true. What I wonder though is, does he NEED to have Daughtry or Carrie -like success? He’s already doing well, and if he kept performing at this level he’d rack up a nice bit of sales by the end of the year. His major promo has been done for a minute outside the Idol 1st week pimpage, and he’s still chugging along. Would 19E be happy with him if he was successful as opposed to mega-successful? I’m not trying to fanwank here, I actually am curious as to what people think is expected by the TPTB at this point.

  • Jolene

I don’t think ALTNOY is dead, I just think it’s growing very very slowly. It’s still not Top 40 and hasn’t charted on the iTunes Top 100 since it first came out. The add date was January 6 – six weeks ago, so I’m simply wondering what’s going to happen to suddenly injest some life into it. I mean – why hasn’t radio jumped all over this song? After Crush, that’s a real question. I don’t buy that Jive is holding it back because it makes no sense that they would – it’s costing them money. So I guess I’m just wondering if it’s going to go on at the same pace or something might really push it forward, and why that something hasn’t happened yet.

ALTNOY was never going to have the same rapid trajectory as Crush, but it seems to be moving in the right direction and it hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t lost its bullet. If that were to happen, then I would be concerned.

If you click on mj’s Idol Billboard Update up top, the numbers for most of the Idols Album are there. Here are the numbers for DCTR:

    #29 David Cook, David Cook – 16,954 (lw 17,770) -5% 953,279

  • jpfan

I had written ALTNOY off awhile back. I’m surprised it still has life on the charts.
But I can’t predict the future for the song. It could move slowly into the Top 40 or die. I haven’t got a clue.

In terms of Cook, I think selling a million albums in this economy guarantees a second album. Jordin is getting one and it took her while to reach that number. Of course she is a much bigger presence on the Top 40 scene than Cook. To play with the big three – K, C and D, he’ll need a really monster Top 40 hit. We’ll see if the album can generate one.

  • frogcooke

I think the main reason for the loss today is that last week aorund this time it had a rather large update, from what it had been getting and whats its been getting right now. I think that big update finally got relegated to ‘last week spin status’ It had been gaining like 1 and 2 and 3 spins a day and jumped to like 20 one day. and the spin rates gone down a bit since that jump. I think its kinda leveling off again. Still slow.. but yeah. It didnt get a whole heck of alot of spins yesterday, and todays seem better so far. I think it will be fine. Looks like David will probably be doing radio promo along with his tour too. So im sure that may help some.

  • IGetCranked

The odd thing, though, is that to me à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“A Little Tooà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (still not typing it out) is a better song than Crush

Funny you should say that because that is what I’ve read alot from fans and Dj’s. Radio is odd like that though. Horrid songs are hits and good songs are neglected some times. Atlanta had it as their hot pick and hasn’t added it. ..everyting about this is odd.

Maybe Cook’s next song will get rock play.. I wouldn’t count that out yet.

  • soundscene

For much of the week ALTNOY got decent updates (around the 20ish range). Today (which counts Sunday spins–rarely great for newer songs not in the AT40 unless they get spun on OHP or some other syndicated show) wasn’t a great update. But that’s compared to last Sunday when WJIM started spinning the heck out of it. WJIM has leveled off its plays now to around 2-3 spins per day. It was getting the song started, I suppose.

It is moving in the right direction. Updates based on weekend spins (whether they are good or bad) are rarely an indicator of the trend for a song because of all the countdowns and syndicated programming. Besides, Top 40 adds haven’t even happened for this week. Jive obviously isn’t done with ALTNOY (remixes just came out today). It’s going slow, but it’s going faster than it was a couple weeks ago.

  • rebekah141

    remixes just came out today

What does this mean for a song? Are there other versions being played?

  • mac

    (remixes just came out today)

Doesn’t that usually mean a song is pretty much done when the remixes come out?

  • oceana

Light On, the only single off David Cook’s cd so far (five months now and waiting for another single) is not so much a rock song and has been promoted as a pop song. There are other songs on the cd that are more rock and might do better on rock stations. Dunno.

I think right now DC hovers somewhere between pop and rock. His cd before Idol, Analog Heart, sounded more like Alternative Rock to me. I think his songs sound more like rock live than on the cd too.

His cd has been out 3 months and he’s had one single that I don’t think really represents all that he has done, can do, and will continue to do musically. His concerts are pretty rocking. When it comes to David Cook and rock, I take a wait-and-see position. I think some of his songs will be played on rock stations. I also don’t give much credence to “rock cred.” Myself I don’t care what anyone calls his music or what labels they put on it. I just know I like it, and hope it gets played somewhere and continues to sell well.

  • soundscene

Doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t that usually mean a song is pretty much done when the remixes come out?

Nope, they usually come out towards the beginning of a song’s run. When CD singles were still prevalent, remixes would oftentimes be placed on the CD single along with the radio or album edit of the song.

You may be thinking of when radio stations actually start playing remixes. The ones that have remix blocks sometimes play a song’s remix towards the end of the song’s run (z100 does that, for example), but the remixes themselves, if done professionally, were usually completed long before that.

  • frogcooke

Mac, nope… they can do remixes anytime they want really.

  • JudyOhio

No HDD chart today? Is it because of President’s Day? I thought only banks and school children got a day off for that!
    :annoyed_tb:

I got off today! lol. But I had to work anyway. Or, rather, I will work today. Haven’t exactly gotten myself going yet.

But yeah, looks like no HDD update today. It’s odd–HDD even updated on Christmas Eve I believe (or was it the day before Thanksgiving?), but not on President’s Day. lol.

  • mac

You may be thinking of when radio stations actually start playing remixes.

Yes. That is what I was thinking of. Thanks for the info soundscene and frogcooke.

Yeah, that’s WPRO. ALTNOY is #10 on their playlist now and have upped its spins since last week. They actually didn’t add it the first week. Second or third week I think.

    Thanks gigglesmo3~

I dont think ALTNOY is anywhere over yet. I’ve been hearing it alot here where I live, and I live in a small town that usually dont play a song till its been out for a couple of months. I didnt hear light on until late decemeber or january..lol……..I think its a good song and its moving up the charts. I hated when people were saying to throw the towel in on LO, and I dont like to hear it about ALTNOY also. Archie has several really good songs on his cd that I expect to be hits also.

Depends how long he wants his 19/RCA career to be. If he only wants to make two or three major albums, then it’s fine if he ends up at 1.5 million or less. Because if his debut does 1.5M , then you’d expect his second album to perhaps do 750K, and his third album then probably would not reach gold, and that point he’ll part ways with the label.

However, if he wants to set himself up to have a longer run than that, then he needs the type of hits that will allow him to push for 2M and past that, so he can turn himself into a “name-artist” as Kelly, Carrie, and Daughtry have been able to do. If David Cook can make himself into a name-artist, then whatever the first single off of his second record is will have a 400 bullet just because it’s a new David Cook song.

So far, though, I don’t think he’s become a name-artist. He’s a celebrity, but in the music world he hasn’t reached “name” status yet.

  • JudyOhio

^^^ I totally understand what you mean by a “name artist” and ITA with the points you make regarding same. And I would further apply that across the board for any of the idols.

Ditto what noctem said. I am happy with whatever success David achieves (that goes for the other David too), but I think he needs a big pop hit or two to elevate himself to Kelly/Carrie status as a winner.

Thanks, guys. Fingers crossed, looks like DC will increase from last week. Brian from IdolChatter placed him at 953K as of last week, so it looks like 3 more weeks (including this one) to cross the 1 million mark unless something extraordinary happens. Not bad!

  • latingrl2005

    Go Lily!!!!!

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

Just for the heck of it, we got the album and single sales figures from Brian today HERE.

  • Jolene

Yeah, looks like a definite increase. I also think it’s going to be two more weeks after this one for Platinum sold – say this week DCTR does 22k, that would mean 975k total. If something boosts it up more, it could possibly reach Platinum next week, but I’m not counting on it yet.
We’ll see what the numbers look like when the finals come in, though, then all will be clearer.

Wow at some of those Grammy bumps. ColdPlay up 255%.
Great numbers for Cook! And a 50% increase!

  • progression

Great numbers for DC! That brings DCTR to approximately 978K. Plantinum sales in reach as early as next week if he can hold onto this pace.

  • Trina

WOAH!! What caused that? I thought he would get a bump from GMA but holy crap!

  • latingrl2005

A lot people buy cds for V-day. Also expect a bump for Easter.
