Crystal Bowersox was sitting in the audience of the Grand Ole Opry on Friday, when, in a surprise move, Vince Gill called her up onto the stage to sing!

Nobody could have been more surprised than Crystal. She tweeted, “Crazy thing.. I didn’t expect this for a second tonight…”

Listen to her performance after the jump.

    wtg crystal awesome heartfelt performance
    you go girl!!!!!!!

Dreads are not a hairstyle you ‘change up.’ You have to let them grow out, and I think Crystal is doing that. I have a feeling she’ll cut them off when her hair gets long enough, and she already pulling them back. [Although, FYI - they aren't dirty or smelly].

That said, it seems to me that Crystal has no trouble dressing up or putting on makeup. She’s not exactly Tracy Chapman. But she’s never going to go the Country Barbie / Pickler / Underwood route.

I love me some Vince Gill.:-)

That being said, all my mind kept repeating while Crystal was singing was “she’s real, the real deal, authentic, real, real, real…”.

A spontaneous performance, handled well, her giddiness and excitement evident, yet she did an awesome job with it all.

    She’s definitely a natural.

It’s funny because I haven’t watched or listened to too much of her travels but when I do. the refrain “she’s the real deal” is pretty much always the thought process. Interesting.

Good for her. As to the appearance question, I’ve never thought “dirty” when I’ve seen her. The hair style isn’t something that means lazy or unkempt nor unclean. Sure, some people, like any other style, won’t be neat and clean, but the style itself doesn’t automatically mean unwashed. She also has a natural prettiness about her, makeup or no. She doesn’t need much, imo, and it all, dressed up or not, screams “real”. JHMHO

I love her voice – just beautiful – strong and such a pure tone. I am not into country much – I still hope she doesn’t go full into the country genre.

  • musicality

I wouldn’t make her into a Kelly Pickler. They made Kelly Pickler into a walking punch line. I do think a good portion of Carrie Underwoods success is due to the way she looks and her country Barbie image more than talent. Carrie is talented but no more talented than Crystal or a lot of the other female country singers out there. However, Carrie has a really polished Barbie doll look that keeps the men coming back for more and the women wishing they looked like her. There is a reason why sex sells. Crystal looks too much like a subway singer begging for change. It’s not attractive in a female and again sex sells. She has the ability to have a more approacable less rough around the edges look. Her features are attractive enough but that grundge look on a female does not equate to mainstream marketability. Though then again maybe she doesn’t want the mainstream big sales.

Make over Crystal into something allegedly more mainstream friendly and you probably take away the authenticity that’s part of her appeal which would probably undercut her sales. There are some people whose image suffers if they go mainstream and Crystal would be one of them.

Kellie went for the Dolly thing too early. But these days she’s affectionately regarded because people see a genuine, uninhibited personality there. Carrie’s image works because it fits her personality, the polished traditional Southern lady. They’ve grown into their own styles and refined them and so will Crystal grow into her own style and refine it.

Awww, tears! Mine. This was so very special for Crystal and she did an amazing job. Like others, I think this would be a great 2nd single.

Crystal looks dressed down a bit in this picture, I’ve seen her looking better in pictures, vids of other appearances. When I first saw this picture of her on the Opry, I thought, why didn’t she dress up more for this? Then I found out she was just supposed to be in the audience that night, not on stage performing…cleared things right up for me.

They’ve grown into their own styles and refined them and so will Crystal grow into her own style and refine it.

And this. :D No makeover, just refinement.

Obviously, Women are writting some of these “style” remarks. Let me be clear as a male = we do not fantasize that often about the Barbie dolls. Yea, they are fun to look at while not usually the best to
play with. Sorry to bust your chops, but most of us prefer our girls a little more routy.

Sure, guys look at Barbie. But they fantasize about the chick in the cut off blue jeans hitch hiking.

You got that right! Look at Barbie….marry the one that will hop on the back of a motorcycle.

Or you can hear the audio in the Opry Archives over there, if you can find it, lol. it takes a bit of looking, and her performance is at the end of over a 2 hour show

  • istersay

Oh yay, you got the real video!!

  • glambotgram

    Wow Crystal sounds great.
I just saw she has another concert scheduled in Newark, OH on April 21 at the Midland Theater, this venue has 1241 seats. She sold out the one in my home town in 2 hours, 500 seats.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Great impromptu performance by Crystal! She was so genuinely thrilled to be invited to sing on the Opry stage. Very cute. :)

I think MJs is safe to link directly to MrDuffin’s link. The GOO has their own YouTube channel setup. This is very very smart for future planning in my opinion.

Instead of a bunch of cell phone downloads they put a professionally recorded version on their own channel. That is leadership and as a fan I really appreciate their vision.
