UPDATE: I’m hearing that, according to David Foster, Katharine’s next album will, indeed, be “adult pop” and that she’s currently writing songs in Nashville for the project.

Foster didn’t think he’d be right to work with Michael Johns, but chose him to sing on the CD/DVD because he knew Michael would kill the rock stuff…

Katharine McPhee and David Foster performed “Somewhere” from Foster’s new CD/DVD Hit Man: David Foster and Friends this morning on The View.

No more “Open Toes” for Katharine! Check out the video, after the jump.

Kat sounds good singing the song maybe Foster can work with her more .Why does this style of singing this song so familiar who sang it this way first?

  • tinawina

She really should do a standards album. She has a beautiful voice for that kind of thing. That and an adult jazz-blues-folk influenced pop album (like the oft mentioned Norah Jones, but also Eva Cassidy and Sara Barielles) would be perfect for her voice and look. She should NOT do Whitney-lite. Fingers crossed for her next album.

  • Glamour

I agree with the above post. Her strength is adult pop. Teen pop is all wrong for her.

  • Tess

This is pretty much the arrangement Barbra Streisand used on her Broadway album in the 80′s.

  • mandalay

She really was meant to sing songs like this. I don’t understand why the AI powers didn’t have her make this type of album to begin with. I guess the current teen pop stuff makes more money. But you have to sound “good” singing a “good” song in order to get radio play and sell. Crap is crap and they should know that by now.

  • gabam

Kat’s voice was very low/soft at the beginning of the song. I wonder if there was problem with the mic or if she intended to sound that way. I started to turn up the sound but then decided to leave it as it was and she got louder.

But you have to sound à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“goodà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ singing a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“goodà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ song in order to get radio play and sell. Crap is crap and they should know that by now.

Someone once said to me that Katharine was too good a singer to sing current teen pop. I disagreed but to an extent it is true. Most Teen pop singers, Britney, Rhianna, Taylor Swift and many others have lousy voices. Rhianna has good songs but is an awful singer. Taylor writes great songs but her voice is very weak, especially live.

Kat however has an amazing voice. David sees that and is very dept at picking the right material to let her gift truly shine through.

BTW Where did the comments about Kat’s new CD from David come from?

Somebody who spoke to David recently.

Thanks. The style of CD is what we have expected, its the Nashville part that is confusing me as she has been seen in LA quite a bit lately.

  • StevenD

I think she fell into the commercial music trap of wanting a contemporary album that mostly didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t fit her. There were some great songs on her disc but they were the adult contemporary ones like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ordinary Worldà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ which was a great vocal from her. I always thought that if she just had that one right song she could be huge.

  • Duke

i think David Foster has a bit of a thing for Kat…actually, more like an obsession imo.

  • maggiemay

sounds great. i really enjoyed that

  • jnd1221

My, her face truly is beautiful. It’s great to see her again, and she sounds amazing with this type of material. She has a great voice, I hope she makes a CD of songs that work well with it.

  • YankeeFan08

I don’t think it was that great of a peformance. To my ears, she hit a lot of bum notes. Pretty girl though.

  • abbysee

Wow, it was pitchy and right around 2:40, I sorta wanted to climb into bed and take a nap. As far as I am concerned she just isn’t a great singer, even in this genre. She has nothing to distinquish herself. Not the cheek of Buble, the chest pounding bombast of Celine, or the precision/emotion of Groban.

She certainly is not equal to Eva Cassidy who was such a restrained yet emotional singer, or Norah and Barielles who are real musicians and songwriters. Kat is a celebrity, maybe an actress, I just don’t see much of a place for her in music, even with David Foster in the mix.

Well all of the comments here are just people’s individual opinions. Nothing is with any “certainty”. IMO Katharine has a very distinctive and beautiful voice. Her tone is pure and her range of emotion is breathtaking. I DO think this style of music suits her voice better as she can show the range and depth of her voice more than formulatic Pop music. Also what I am seeing from reading comments and “opinions” all over the net is that the majority believe she has grown, matured and improved her vocals a great deal since the show. This may not have been her finest performance of the song but it is still a very good performance IMO. The standards for her have been raised and we are in for something very special in the future.

The anticipation for her new CD is growing all over the place. And with the right songs this amazing young women is IMO and as Chris Botti said when she performed with him and The Boston Pops “destined for greatness”.

I didn’t say she was their equal, just that she should sing that kind of music. But I do think she has a pretty voice. Oh well, to each his own! :cool1_tb:

I really thought Kat sounded good here. I’m not a big fan of this song but this song does emphasize a couple Katharine’s vocal strengths (her lower range and ability to impart emotion to intimate vocals) and that is likely why Foster has her singing it. I thought Something on Idol last year was a better performance though, that one was pretty close to flawless and this clearly wasn’t.

Interesting that Katharine’s two nationally broadcast performances in the last year with David Foster were Something & Somewhere. I posit that a song Somehow or Somewho is in the offing, the latter perhaps as part of a Grinch-related Christmas album.

I can’t say that I blame Kat for doing the Barbra/Broadway album “somewhere”, especially since Foster had his hand in that. It is a fantastic arrangement, but I think she pales so in comparison to Barbra, that the performance was ruined for me and probably anyone else familiar with that arrangement (which I would guess is many many many people).

Foster really does seem quite high on McPhee, and seems to want to do some star-making there as he seems to thrive on the desire to discover the next big thing (a la Buble, Celeine, Groban). Problem with Kat is #1 is, AI got there first. Problem #2, she’s not that interesting a discovery. He also seems to be trying to do a second-coming-of-Whitney with this 16-year-old powerhouse belter that was featured on GMA on Monday or Friday, I think. (I somehow think he’d kill for Simon to step aside so that he could sit in the acerbic judge’s chair.)

Well everybody on the planet “pales” in comparison to Barbra, so no harm there for Kat. And to say her performance “ruined” Barbra’s arrangement is a gross overstatement IMO. I am familiar with that arrangement, and Carol Lawrence’s from the original play and a number of others. Kat is no Barbra but neither is anyone else. And from what I have read of people’s reactions to this performance and the one on the Hit Man CD/DVD, “many, many, many people” have been very impressed with Kat’s “outstanding” vocals.

Again its all personal taste and opinion so nothing absolute can be inferred about the future by what those opinions are. There are many many successful artists who can’t hold a candle to Kat’s voice and there are many others who Kat has been more successful than, who have better voices. What David sees in her and has since their chance meeting on the show is a raw talent that he feels he can have a very positive impact on her career. And from what we have seen and she has said about him, he is doing just that.

  • Skylark

I agree that she is best on the standards such as Over the Rainbow (she has yet to top that performance). But there are so many amazing singers competing for the (smaller than pop) audience buying that music. And unfortunately she is not really in their league, nor does she have the charisma to make up for her vocal weaknesses. Botched glory notes like this one plagued her throughout Idol. I think her stunning beauty continues to propel her career forward

Uncool for Whoopie intro her as Katherine McVEE.
They couldn’t give the intro to one of the hosts who actually watch Idol??

:lol_wp: I don’t think that there is a single word in that sentence I agree with. lol Oh well, just one person’s opinion is all.
