Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston star in the remake of the 1976 movie Sparkle and you can see the official trailer here now. The story revolves around a girl group made up of a trio of sisters trying to make it in the Motor City music scene in the 1960′s.

This is Jordin’s movie debut, but sadly, for the late Whitney Houston, her last. She plays the mother of the pop wannabes–a failed singer who warns her daughters, “Isn’t my life enough of a cautionary tale?” Chilling, considering the death of Houston from a drug overdose in February.

Sparkle opens in theaters August 17.

    Hopefully this movie is Jordin’s big break! If this does well and is well received, then it could open up a big door for her in the acting world.

    Wow!!!   This trailer surely did draw me in- much more so than I had expected!   Eager to see the movie!

    Love that J.Sparks is “Sparkle”.  This looks good, and a little Dreamgirls-esque.  Hope it can do big things for Jordin.

    With JHud getting up there age wise (at least by the standards for Hollywood actresses), Sparkle may be Jordin’s opportunity to step into, or challenge for the roles that JHud would otherwise get, i.e. bigger woman with big voice. Best of luck to her. With her singing, dancing and now acting, Jordin is a true triple threat. Can’t say that about any Idol winner with the exception of Fantasia, but her dancing is a bit weird.

    I looks like they took the basic idea of the original and made a different movie. Not so much a remake as a re-imagining I guess? I totally want to see what they did with it. It looks good!

     This looks really good, I don’t know what I was expecting but I’m pleasantly surprised. This should open big doors for Jordin.

    Oh Bliss! Promising cast.

     Bless Whitney’s Soul she looks so vulnerable in this role but at the same time strong too!!

    This could be Jordin’s time to sparkle! It seems herself and Whitney had a connection. Is it August Yet?;-)  For the Uk it could be longer(:-Cant wait!

    I looks like they took the basic idea of the original and made a different movie.

    I think that often works out better that a straight update.

    I think it looks good, too.  Very solid casting even beyond the marquee names.  Definitely curious to see the reviews when they come out.
