Idol Headlines for 10/18/12

Phillip Phillips performs at the Bosom Ball Soundcheck Party in Covington KY.

Bump in his career – NASHVILLE/SINGAPORE – When David Cook went onstage during an episode of American Idol in May, the song he sang could have been written for his record label at the time, RCA. The Last Song I’ll Write For You, a break-up ballad, was followed by the shocking announcement later in the night that he had been dropped by his label. He had released two post-Idol albums with the label. It’s a familiar story by now – the first five male winners of American Idol were all dropped by their record labels after weak album sales. – Read more at AsiaOne

Britney Spears Buys $8.5 MILLION Mansion with Jason Trawick – Britney Spears has left Calabasas … and moved into a brand new $8.5 MILLION mansion even further away from all of the Hollywood madness. The 8,456 square foot home is located inside a swanky private community in Thousand Oaks, CA — about 16 miles from Brit’s old mansion in Calabasas. Here are the stats — 5 bedrooms, 7 baths, wine cellar, home theater and massive infinity pool. We’re told Britney made the move because she’s starting a new life with fiance Jason Trawick … and wants to be in a new home in a secure location. The move puts Britney even further away from the hub of Hollywood — but we’ve learned Brit will stay in a super-fancy L.A. hotel when “X Factor” comes to Los Angeles in a few weeks. Read more at TMZ

Bristol and Mark are on The View, and the ladies are kissing Bristol’s ass. Sherri is being particularly obsequious. Ugh. Bristol discounted that people were voting for her because of her Mom. lol

Thanks for posting the DC interview with The New Paper in Singapore, mj – I didn’t know they had an on-line edition too. The promo for the Oct 25th ION Orchard gig next week is building.

It was interesting to see a timeframe in this interview for the break with RCA – the Cook Cone of Silence was still in operation, since David knew long before he said anything in May… “I found out in March. In talking with RCA and figuring out where to move forward, it became apparent that we wanted different things out of the deal.”

But the part about the new music was as tantalizing as ever – “Coming from a rock background, historically I’ve operated on the mantra ‘the louder the better’.
“But with the new stuff, I’ve made a concerted effort on toning down the guitars a bit, concentrating on the melody and trying out new textures.“I’ve been trying to get out of my comfort zone and try some new things musically.”
Heh. And I have no idea what that will translate to, musically.

But with radio options narrowing down to smaller and smaller boxes, it seems a little like the country genre or its influences are bloody everywhere, as people find it a default option for radio play. Sometimes, the only option – and sometimes one feels a little (or a lot) besieged, if they are most definitely NOT a country music fan. So I was somewhat reassured to read this, on the move to Nashville in June-

“Moving to country music capital Nashville this year has also been a boon for him creatively.

Although he said he has been inspired by the creativity in the city, he’s not about to go into country music himself any time soon.
“I would love to write for other artists, country artists, but (to do country music myself) I think it might come off as disingenuous,” he said.

“But I’ve learnt enough from things to never say never.

“I do wear cowboy boots, though.”

    Heh. Good to Know. IMO.

MJ…I understand you interviewed Kris at LKR.  Can’t wait to hear what he had to say.   Thanks.   In case anyone missed this (didn’t see it posted) here’s Kris singing Time of Your Live, a composition by Steve Van Zandt.   Apparently several bloggers and others feel he should record it and/or incorporate it into his shows.    Also…here’s a tweet regarding what Elvis Costello thought about Kris:

@wehomusic Elvis Costello leaned over to me and said “where did this guy come from? He’s great”

Here’s video.  Thanks to DblJerseygirl.   http://youtu.be/GiFGSpkQPZQAndy also posted a video but this one is clearer and closer.

Interesting info in that HDD link:

The View and GMA week of release. Letterman upcoming. Singing National Anthem at World Series game one 10/24. LP hitting 11/19.

Not sure about P2 handling the National Anthem. That could be scary. ;0 Letterman is a nice get though.

  • girlygirltoo

little worried about him singing the NA. Hopefully he brings his guitar

But looks like they’ve got a lot of nice promo lined up for his album release week

It was interesting to see a timeframe in this interview for the break with RCA – the Cook Cone of Silence was still in operation, since David knew long before he said anything in May..

Maybe not so much cone of silence, but that the decision was made to release a single himself when he was going on Idol, and to have the announcement occur then.  It was kind of showing that he intended on releasing music himself.

Interesting about the timing, and also it did seem like there was at least some talk with the label and that the problem was more creative differences.  It might not have just been about album sales if that was true.

Heh. And I have no idea what that will translate to, musically.

The direction might be towards what is more current now, more of a singer-songwriter with less rock than in the past.  And I love when he does rock, too. But I feel that From Here To Zero is a terrific song and might even become a hit if it was released.

I can’t wait to see what the new album is like, and hope it does well.

Karen C, sure, David told Shirley Halperin that he and the Label “saw different things on the horizon”…in the THR interview…but I know people tend to discount anything but sales as a reason. Except, his sales for TLM were not so different than the comps for other folks, at that point.

But I’m looking at the timeline – David knew in March what he was going to do …by April 28th he had debuted “From Here to Zero” at the Foundation Room of the HOB in Vegas, the night before opening for Bon Jovi at Tiger Jam – and announced there would be a new song on Idol at the end of May.

I also agree, FHTZ is a terrific song. (MasterClassLady agrees with you, in some detail, giving it a ten out of ten) It’s ‘different’ – almost a syncopated rhythm, but the subtle differences are in the use of language – the lyrics have a different POV than the music it is ‘progressed’ from. The chorus is almost an automatic sing-a-long, it just makes sense musically, even before one has actually learned it. Good writing, IMO.

Whatever David plans to do with that track, I could listen to more like that – but not ‘all’ like that. And that’s OK – we also have a newly registered song, “Firing Squad” that people can wonder about. Heh. And where that might fit, I also don’t know – but I “can’t wait to see.”
