‘American Idol’ Scotty McCreery Talks Debut Album & High School Graduation

“I could have made a record where I was trying to sound like a 40-year-old country singer, but that’s not what I wanted to do,” McCreery says, adding that he knew he found the right producer as soon as he met Bright. “He knew exactly where I was coming from in the country format, as well as my background in church and the Christian aspect in my life.”

GAC Album Review: Scotty McCreery’s Clear As Day

Many of the songs on Clear As Day embrace Scotty’s youth. Opening track “Out Of Summertime” features shuffling percussion, mandolin and a quick hook as lyrics flow with reflection on young love. On “Walk In the Country,” sharp acoustic guitars support Scotty’s rolling vocals as he (ironically?) sings, I’m so sick of all them TV shows, I need some dirt road under my feet, with conviction. “Write My Name On Your Hand,” one of the album’s biggest highlights, vividly captures the innocence of teenage love.

Kellie Pickler Shows Her ‘Tough’ Side

The song, written by Leslie Satcher, was penned specifically for Kellie. “I met Leslie earlier this year,” the North Carolina native recalls. “We were sitting down just getting to know each other. We had written a song together that’s going to be on the record. After our write, she asked me where we were in the song-picking process, and how that was going. I said, ‘It’s just been really hard because I have so many different people in town. There’s songwriters everywhere. I’ve had many people come and say, ‘I wrote this song for you,’ and I listen to it, and I’m thinking, ‘That’s what they think of me?’ I was thinking, ‘Let’s get out of the ‘Red High Heels’ stage.’ I was 19. That’s over. I’m not kicking anyone to the curb in my red high heels anymore. I’m married. That part of my life, the teenage years, are done. I’m not a teenager anymore. It seems like everyone was trying to pitch me shoe songs or things I’ve already done in a way.”

How Simon Cowell Unwinds (and Stays Clean!) at Home

A day in the life of Simon Cowell starts with breakfast in bed, ends with “a lot of beers,” and includes 500 push ups in between.

“I’ll do 500 push ups in a day religiously, and if I can I like to have a workout,” the host of The X Factor tells PEOPLE. “Then I have a steam and a bath but I always have breakfast in bed.”

Dancing’s Maks: We Were a Little Discouraged By the Judges’ Comments

I am really bummed Val and Elisabetta left. I was worried about him — we worry about each other all the time — and when he got eliminated, I felt bad because I want to see him win and do well. We’re competitive by nature and it’s hard to accept stuff like this at first, but you do and move on. It’s not ideal, but he will be back. I thought they did a great job with their quickstep, but unfortunately, nobody knew her. They relied on getting a good score, which they got, but a lot of other people got good scores too, and it was a close spread, so that’s where the fan bases make the difference.

Is ‘Glee’ Past Its Prime on the Music Charts?

The return of Glee to the small screen naturally brings the return of the Glee cast to the Billboard Hot 100, as well as an extension of the troupe’s record for most entries in the chart’s history.

By comparison, the top track from last year’s second-season opener, the cast’s cover of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind,” began at No. 21 on the Hot 100 with sales of 106,000.

In all, five Glee tracks debuted a year ago this week, all between Nos. 21 and 51, totaling sales of 409,000. This week, the download sales of the three debuting Glee tracks sold approximately one-quarter that amount (106,000).

That’s a pretty significant drop.

I like that Majors & Minors is showing them really working on their craft — the writing, the choreography, etc. The mentors aren’t just there for show, which is nice. All 12 kids seem to be very talented. Some of them are definitely not comfortable yet with the choreography part — but it’s just the first week :)

Justin Bieber probably doesn’t even need to finish high school. Financially, he is set for life.

Not necessarily. It’s possible his career takes a nosedive especially in the next few years when he’s not a teen heartthrob anymore. And it’s possible he spends too much money & goes bankrupt like MC Hammer or Toni Braxton. I don’t think Bieber spends that much. But nobody knows how much he saves.

Oh, teen heart throbs usually have the worst time transitioning into adulthood. And many run into financial messes (ruins) from bad decisions, bad investments. And part of it is that these young kids didn’t have the education growing up to understand the business side of their careers.

I commend all the idols who got their college degrees. Hell, I commend everyone who got their college degrees, even myself lol. For some, college is not their choice. I know that Adam said his dad was disappointed when he dropped out of Cal-Fullerton, but he was majoring in musical theater and felt he would get more out of working in the craft than in a classroom. His experiences after, especially the European touring in Hair certainly seemed to expand his horizons and teach him alot, so I guess it worked out for him.

I hope Scotty does whatever makes him happy. His future is wide open.

I don’t think Bieber spends that much. But nobody knows how much he saves.

Well, IDK how old he is – but many states have a version of California’s Coogan Law to protect some portion of a minor’s earnings…but not all of them do. In any case, it’s not what he personally spends, but what it costs to BE Bieber.

Taxes in his bracket take the first bite – but everyone is getting paid out of the same earnings pot – label, agents, managers, studio musicians, backing bands, tech crews, song writers, booking companies, travel co-ordinators, bus drivers, plane tickets, hotels, etc. – all the people and services necessary to create and maintain the Traveling Circus. And Pop is a notoriously Fickle Byeotch – the fad for Bieber can pass even before he’s no longer the age of a Teen Heart throb.

Never a bad idea to have a Plan B – which is where education is a nice string to your bow – there’s money in songwriting…if Scotty wants to write, there are music theory classes, and he could learn about voicing and parts, about writing music, arranging for instruments, and how to structure a song…and have more than ideas to bring to the table.

Eventually, he will be dealing directly with contracts and such – learning something about the business side would be another layer of protection.

No matter how he goes about it – putting a value on continued education will pay off – because he’s in that world now, and OJT at that level can be costly.

    JMO. Of Course.

What is weird is that his mom has the last name of my family. You don’t hear it that often, lol, but we aren’t Canadian. We’re French though, many years back.

  • fuzzywuzzy

The college experience is really what you make of it. Sure, there’s the practical aspect of pursuing a degree as a necessary requirement for making money and pursuing a career, but its really up to the individual as to what they get out of college. It’s more than just an academic education and at its best, a college degree teaches a person to think, broadens a person’s horizons and helps in appreciating life more.

    A poster on IDF…

I’d read that…ILYTB was going to be the theme song for a Brazilian Soap Opera (telenovela). Well, it’s true, and it is on Globo, the biggest station… the Soap Opera is called Fina Estampa.

I don’t know if Belmont (seems like his main choice) has these classes – it might, being in Nashville. But he said he wants to major in Music Business.

  • larc

The Mike Curb College of Entertainment & Music Business at Belmont University offers undergraduate programs in these fields:

    Audio Engineering Technology
    Entertainment Industry Studies
    Music Business
    Songwriting

Additionally, the College of Visual & Performing Arts offers these fields (among others):

    Music Composition
    Music Theory
    Music Performance

  • Incipit

Nice research, Larc. That college looks like a good fit for Scotty – and other classes that widen the pool of knowledge he can draw from as he matures will march with the RL experiences coming his way.

I’m never gonna be a proponent of putting children directly into the music industry, but he seems like a level headed, grounded young person, with his priorities in order. I wish him well.
