CONCERT CAPSULE: American Idol at Wachovia Arena

THE SHORT WORD: It was one highlight after another as the road version of America’s favorite TV show played the Wachovia Arena on Wednesday. Judging by the crowd’s reaction, the most popular seems to be runner-up Adam Lambert (they screamed every time his picture came up in the promos before the show), followed closely by champion Kris Allen and third-place finisher Danny Gokey. After each Idol took turns in the spotlight, all 10 closed the show with a crowd-pleasing version of Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believing.’

Idol Chatter: Ex-Contestants React to Ellen DeGeneres’ ‘American Idol’ Move

THE “AMERICAN IDOL” universe at large appears to be mostly pleased with the news that Ellen DeGeneres will be filling the judges seat vacated by Paula Abdul earlier this summer.

A swing through the Twitter feeds of former Idolites big and small revealed several truths: a) Many of them like Ellen DeGeneres; b) Many of them also like to overuse punctuation; c) Semi-famous people throw spelling to the wind while on Twitter, too.

Here’s what some of them are saying, unedited, unfiltered and in some cases possibly unconscious:

Express Night Out

So You Think Ellen Can Judge: DeGeneres To Take Paula’s ‘American Idol’ Chair

56440034Raise your hand if you saw this coming: The person replacing Paula Abdul on the American Idol judges’ panel will be none other than talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, who according to Hollywood sleuth Nikki Finke has signed a five-year deal with the show that kicks in once the live episodes start next winter. Not a current pop star like the Katy Perrys and Joe Jonases who have been filling in for the preliminary rounds, not a behind-the-scenes type like Kara DioGuardi. Huh!

Kara DioGuardi on Ellen: ‘I Think She’s a Brilliant Choice’

“American Idol” judge Kara DioGuardi speaks to ET about the addition of Ellen DeGeneres to the “Idol” judging panel. Read on to see what she has to say.

We caught up with DioGuardi at a Fashion’s Night Out event in New York on Thursday night. She was excited that her rookie days are over, saying, “Whew! I’m actually happy not to be the new judge anymore.”

She told ET of her initial reaction to hearing the news that Ellen would be joining the team. “I was on the plane when I found out and I literally wanted to scream,” said the now-veteran judge.

Kara DioGuardi: I’m a Huge Ellen Fan!

No longer the new kid on the block, Kara DioGuardi was more than happy to offer her expert opinion on American Idol’s latest hire.

“I’m a huge Ellen DeGeneres fan,” the “thrilled” songwriter raved during an interview airing Friday on Sirius XM’s The Morning Jolt with Larry Flick. “I think she’s going to bring so much to the show.”

“She’s somebody who loves music, she’s positive, she loves kids…She is somebody who has watched the show from the beginning, knows everything there is to know about American Idol and I think ultimately it’s going to be a great new energy.”

‘Ellen’ Sued For THOUSANDS Of Copyright Infringements

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ‘” Some of the world’s largest recording companies are suing “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” claiming producers violated their copyrights by playing more than 1,000 songs without permission.

Life after `American Idol’A busy David Cook fits in time for plastic chickens and ficus plants

ALLEGAN — There’s a video rock singer and “American Idol” alumnus David Cook had uploaded to his Web site in August featuring Cook, a ficus plant and a small rubber chicken.

One of series of videos from the road titled “Pork Beans,” the video — “A Ficus Flows Between Us” — shows Cook and the chicken in their own respective armchairs with the ficus plant between them on an end table.

In talk-show format, a deadpan Cook asks the chicken — all but obscured by the plant — a number of questions, ranging from the “Idol”-heavy mundane (“What are your thoughts on Paula Abdul leaving `American Idol’? Is Simon really that mean in person? Who do you like better from Season Eight, Adam or Kris?”) to the outrageous (“Out of a five-star scale, how many stars would you give Kevin Costner’s performance in `Waterworld’?”).

SIMON Cowell has admitted Susan Boyle made him realise he has to take care of his contestants.

In an interview on US TV, the pop mogul talked to Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden about singing sensation Boyle, 48.

He described her breakdown after the end of the competition as “scary”.

Simon, 49, said: “I think at the point where she (Susan) didn’t win, she was afraid everything would be taken away from her and she was going to go back to that little house. She didn’t want to go back to that life.”

He said it made him realise he has a duty to look after people who audition on his shows.

Cheryl Burke ready to dance with Tom DeLay

As a two-time ‘Dancing With the Stars’ champion, 25-year-old Cheryl Burke has gone from pretty professional to break-out star in her own right.

Burke is one of the hottest stars of the ABC reality series, one who is often sought after by the competitors that join the franchise, including her partner this season, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

The two have been gearing up for the show’s ninth season, which begins on Sept. 21, rehearsing their cha-cha to ‘Wild Thing’ (that will be their first dance), in Sugar Land, Texas.

‘Glee’ bows strong in ratings race

Fox has reason to be happy about “Glee,” the high school-set musical skein that bowed to nice numbers on Wednesday.

The net’s biggest marketing priority of fall, “Glee” easily stood as Wednesday’s top demo draw and became Fox’s top fall scripted series preem in three years. It was especially strong in its targeted demo of women 18-34, a loyal faction that should help the show hang tough in the face of increased competish in the weeks ahead.

The other shows to bow on the night, meanwhile, reality vets “So You Think You Can Dance” on Fox and “America’s Next Top Model” on CW saw a somewhat sluggish start — despite the fact that they were opposed on ABC, CBS and NBC by President Obama’s health-care speech.

Looking at the Nielsens, “Glee” averaged a 3.5 rating/9 share in adults 18-49 and 7.50 million viewers overall with its official series premiere. It easily won its hour in demos despite facing three reality shows (“America’s Got Talent,” “Wipeout” and “Top Model”) that also score well with young auds.

According to the Danny article, Randy Travis advised him to go country when he was a mentor during the season.

Not sure what I think of the Ellen thing, will be interesting how that plays out. For all her goofiness, Paula did have her own type of knowledge about singing and performance.

That is a really wonderful interview with Danny, about both him personally and his musical direction. I also was really interested to read in this and other reports that Randy Travis, a very traditional country artist, had encouraged Danny to consider taking his career into country music.

Randy said in the segment that was aired that Danny has an exceptionally soulful voice, but it’s even more of a compliment that he thought about Danny for a potential country career. It dispels some of the perception that country music won’t welcome anyone without a twang, or not from the south, or some of the other theoretical barriers one reads about. In addition to Danny’s vocal abilities, I think Randy and others probably relate well to the way Danny approaches his songs from a pretty emotionally centered place. Danny’s faith-oriented point of view also may be something he has in common with a lot of country artists. Randy Travis is one of many who have occasionally recorded gospel/Christian songs as well as mainstream country songs.

Per his interview a couple of days ago, Michael seems to *grudgingly* be willing to go the country route. He is on song 919. Heh. This *would* make sense for him; as he says, it’s a “lifestyle” and he has the right voice for it. I hope it works out for Danny. It would be nice for him to get on with his life (with a handler’s help). BTW, I do believe that Michael has new-found respect for Adam and his lifestyle. I prefer not to be cynical on this one.

Did I stumble into the NFL forum today? Feeling weirdly disoriented :)

Danny has been on such a roller coaster ride since Sophia’s death. My heart really does go out to him in that regard. I feel as if the AI experience has kept him in a sort of limbo because it’s so far removed from Real Life. Hopefully he can move forward in his grieving process and reach a place where he can date again. He’s a young man and needs to have love in his life. I for one will be happy for him.

No, he’s just a loyal hometown boy. You can tell even he doesn’t really believe it, haha. I think he did a good job and looked really cute. The flower necklace was really butt though, and distracting. The necklace without that huge pendant would’ve been kinda hot, but the pendant is awful. But I also love the way he looks with a knit cap on. I liked the off-white crochet one (wow, that description sounds almost girly!) that he wore on that VH1 Free Radio show, but the dude tends to lose his clothing (ok, that sounds dirty…) so I’m pretty sure it’s gone since we haven’t seen it in forever.

He looks so much better when he dresses up just a bit. I know the fashion now is the plaids, jeans, and old-looking Ts, but dressing up a bit might make rising stars seem more special, especially for new potential fans. And I know this was a sports clip (hence the T, but that necklace?), I’m talking in general. I agree–it is shocking.

Re: fair use–I don’t think so. The fair use doctrine is primarily for non-profit scholarly works or news/criticism. If a song were played to an audience of 130 music students in a lecture hall at Berklee School of Music for purposes of music instruction or music criticism, the copyright holder would have a poor case of copyright infringement, regardlessof the length of the “snippet.” Alternatively, use of a short snippet or quote from a copyrighted work for a commercial purpose, wouldn’t be covered by the fair use doctrine. Ellen’s people fell down on the job, and that show will have to settle all of those claims. They’ll be lucky to settle for the use fees.

I’ve only gotten one hug, and haven’t gotten front row (though twice pretty darn good seats) but… yeah. Go see him live, and you’re hooked. Every time he comes anywhere near (or even not so near if it is a few hours away) Northern VA I’m flailing around for tickets.

The home page updated and it is a new video. I just happen to be there and the screen blipped. I looked to the right and the bronzed out picture in the video window was different. At the time, the page had not announced that a new video was available.

No new info, just a chance to see Adam speak again.

Off to find out what he has to say about Ellen!!!

Apparently, DC also mentioned Ellen at last night’s show, said how much he loves her, and asked everyone to support her, etc. So sweet.

  • ladymadonna

Thanks for the Cookwood duet link. That brightened my morning. I’ve seen it countless times (it’s on my ipod), but it still never gets old.

And about that NFL picks video….Cook was wearing a necklace? All I saw was a hot guy who knows his football. Swoon.

Jason is getting some nice publicity. I love my Season 7 guys, so yea for him!

  • Sassycatz

Touring in support of his album for more than the past 200 days hasn’t offered Cook much time to work on a follow-up, though he said he currently has three songs knocked out. And with the positive way things are going on tour, he doesn’t seem too concerned about what’s next.

Three new songs? Is that new information? I wonder if they’re solo works or co-written and with whom?

    *****

David Cook as football prognosticator –> That looks like a necklace I would’ve worn when I was in high school in the 70′s. I guess everything old is new again! (Except me. I just get older.) And, he didn’t touch on any of the football teams I give a darn about. If this is a regular FOX sports feature, maybe he will.

It appears from this video that his hair is shorter and darker. Judge for yourself, Sma11ie.

    Straight Ahead in San Diego

Leaving aside Cook’s hair ‘“ for a moment — which IS looking much better in that video, is Monty getting hot or what? I noticed that in the videos from the L.A./Fonda theater videos and I thought he was going ‘Hollywood.’ A fedora ‘“ not just any old hat ‘“ and a permanent five o’clock shadow. He’s looking faintly like Bruce Willis there. Maybe they all visited stylists while they were in L.A. before the big show with Simon Fuller and RCA in the audience.

    ****

    Ellen DeGeneres –> Vox Populi?

Well, if she starts making fun of the other judges as well as the incompetent production and poor structural changes the show has made last season, then yeah! That will definitely be the voice of the people!

I know the fashion now is the plaids, jeans, and old-looking Ts, but dressing up a bit might make rising stars seem more special, especially for new potential fans.

I’m ok with the excessive plaid shirts and vintage tees he’s been wearing lately but I do love when he dresses up. I went into Urban Outfitters the other day and that stuff is literally wall to wall. When he does dress him he gets it just right. IMO the best he ever looked was the NYC CD release party. When he walked out on stage I gasped. That and the outfit he wore for the American Music Awards performance. Since that was the height of CD promo I bet someone got him a stylist. Although I did love his red carpet look for the AI finale this year.

Me too! The CookWood Disney video is good stuff. I’d love to have a duet from those two.

I don’t know about that, but at least it should be better than Black Holes. No shit stuff like Starlight this time.

You didn’t like Black Holes? That was probably the album of theirs that got the most listens since their debut (although I did like the other albums). I thought Knights of Cydonia, Map of the Problematique and Take a Bow are among their best songs. I think The Resistance is more along the lines of Black Holes than their previous albums. It actually has some songs on it that are poppier than the ones on Black Holes, and takes the prog to another level again. I like it from the preview I heard.

Anyway, I thought Danny was on Sony Nashville, but it says RCA Nashville in the article. Are they the same thing?

This past week has been very difficult for me, very sentimental,’ he said. He said because of the hectic schedule of the show and tour, ‘I haven’t been able to mourn or grieve. This week, I’ve been letting it out more than usual.

Danny, Danny, Danny… on some days I just wonder when we are going to see the emotional meltdown. As soon as it gets quiet, the tour & recording is done, all this emotional stuff that he has sort of pushed aside is going to come like an avalanche. I’m sure he’ll make it out the other end – everyone complains about his foot in mouth disease, but his procrastination in mourning makes me wonder when the train wreck is coming.

  • sma11ie

That looks like a necklace I would’ve worn when I was in high school in the 70′s. I guess everything old is new again!

Question is, are you a dude? If not, then apparently, everything girls used to wear is new again for guys? Hm, sorry, don’t like that necklace. About the supposed new hair, I can’t watch the clip now, but I’ll have to inspect soon ;)

Anyway, I thought Danny was on Sony Nashville, but it says RCA Nashville in the article. Are they the same thing?

I think RCA Nashville is one of the labels under the Sony Nashville umbrella. Another is Arista Nashville, Carrie’s label.

It’s a great album, their best yet. It’ll be huge. Uprising is no 1 on Alternative rock radio US, they announced it on their site:

    http://muse.mu/news/article/494/us-news'”vma-venue-announced'“uprising-1/

I love it too .. very Queen-esque in parts

I think United States of Eurasia is fabulous .. it reminds me in parts of Bohemian Rhapsody

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOOXmke8Wfw

… and Uprising reminds me of the old Dr Who theme tune …lol

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaOaFB6pZag

  • leome

    You didn’t like Black Holes?

It’s not that I dislike, it’s Muse, I do like, but I love the other albums a lot more.
I don’t listen to Knights of Cydonia and Take A Bow much, but they make for great first and last song in concert, really powerful. I’m more into Hoodoo and Assassin though.
What I think is that they used to have this really unique sound, something that sounded nothing like anything else, but then they went a bit commercial. Starlight is exactly that, a song made for the general audience to know them. Now we listen to and think “Hey, this sounds like Queen… ” It takes away one of the things that makes them unique. But I still love, and will never miss a concert as long as I can be there. I just won’t say it’s their best sound yet, cause Bliss, Plug In Baby… for me that’s Muse at their best.

I agree totally. USE is very Bohemian Rhapsody, and Uprising is a straight reference to Dr. Who. You have to love Bellamy for going back to his childhood (mine as well I guess) for inspiration.
It’s probably one of the reasons why I love the album so much, the nostalgia it invokes in me, along with that blissful feeling that only the past can hold, is wonderful.

ETA: Unnatural Selection is my favourite. It is absolute perfection to my ear.

What I think is that they used to have this really unique sound, something that sounded nothing like anything else, but then they went a bit commercial. Starlight is exactly that, a song made for the general audience to know them.

Maybe it’s because I lived in the UK for most of Muse’s career (and my husband — then-bf — went to uni in Devon before they released an album, so they were ~it~ because very little happens in that region), but I’ve always found them rather commercial since they can sell out stadiums and have constant radio airplay. I guess it is different in the US, but I have nothing to compare it to since “Starlight” and “Knights of Cydonia” are always on the radio and I don’t know if Muse weren’t before this album (I know LA tends to be a bit different when it comes to what is on the radio as well). I didn’t really see Black Holes as an attempt to go commercial, unless the US market was in mind. Either way, I think what gave them a boost is Stephenie Meyer. Oddly.

I think RCA Nashville is one of the labels under the Sony Nashville umbrella. Another is Arista Nashville, Carrie’s label.

Ahh, I see. I’m not up on the country thing (do like old-skool and alt-country though), so I wasn’t sure what the difference was.

This. I really worry about Danny, even if I’m not much of a fan. But, he hasn’t gone through the grieving process, and eventually, it will have to come out in some way. I hope that he has not only a lot of support in place, but also that his management and record company will allow him time to go through the process.

It will be tough enough to make the transition from the AI bubble into the real world, but add in the delayed grieving process, and this could be an exceptionally difficult time for Danny.

Me too. David brought the Race for Hope to my attention… but once I knew about it, it seemed like it was an eye opener to how many people are going through it. My neighbor across the street has been fighting brain cancer for the past year… has five kids, the oldest just went into college :( . I’ll be back at the Race for Hope next year – it was amazing. Kudos to David for raising awareness; it was moving for my son and I both (and I want my kids to give back… and they love David… so it’s a good inspiration).

Thank you for the link to the new Adam video.

Here is a link to Allison’s performance on Telemundo, singing in Spanish, “Volverte a amar”, an Alejandra Guzman song.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHLMus2QfRA

After she sang, there was wild applause and chanting in the audience. The judges in Mexico really liked Allison. The first one said she had a marvelllous voice. The second judge asked Allison where she was going in her life, in her career, and Allison said, without any hesitation, “Para arriba”.

The program showed her mother’s reaction to what the judges had to say, and her mother was so moved, she had to wipe the tears from her eyes.

‘American Idol’s’ Gokey says he’ll marry again

Maybe Danny should get over the death of his first wife before he even thinks about remarrying. I’ve read comments about about how brave Danny is blah blah blah. To me brave is the widow or widower who doesn’t retreat to the fantasy world of AI. They go about their days working, paying their bills and many times raising a grieving family. Danny’s had it easy as far as I’m concerned.

he hasn’t gone through the grieving process

To this I must ask why people believe this? Of course he’s grieved for his wife. Just because he participated in AI didn’t preclude him working through the death of his wife.

  • Squirrely

The headline on the Gokey article is very misleading. It sounds like he’s ready to get married today. He’s just saying eventually he’d like to get married and have a family. And that his wife would have wanted him to be happy.

I don’t think Danny is any less or more brave than any one else in his situation. In terms of paying the bills, the smartest thing he ever did in his life was go on Idol. In the near future at least, those bills will get paid alot quicker than when he was a truck driver.

Idol isn’t exactly a fantasy world for the contestants either. More like music boot camp. It’s a fantasy world for the fans though.

    From that Danny article:

But in an interview before the Reading show, Gokey laughed off the rumors and said he’s not seeing anyone. In fact, he said the past week has been very melancholy for him for some reason ‘“ perhaps that the tour is winding down or the announcement he has signed a record contract with RCA Nashville for his debut album.

Gee, if his Nashville recording contract makes him so melancholy, he shouldn’t have signed it!

Danny’s had it easy as far as I’m concerned.

Not really if you think about it. Danny’s first year of grieving was done in the public eye under scrutiny and away from friends and family. He’s been very busy since Sophia passed and he probably hasn’t even allowed himself to grieve properly.

People handle losses in different ways. Look at Niam Leeson, he handle Natasha death like a trooper, he was back at work and in the public eye fairly quickly after she passed. But then you see Jennifer Hudson and John Travolta who can’t even speak about the loved ones they’ve lost yet.

edit: please don’t criticize or lecture your fellow posters

The guy can be annoying as all hell but no one knows how he is truly handling Sophia’s death.

Well, that’s good. But, right before he sang “Kiss on the Neck,” he did give the big middle-finger salute when talking about how the song is for those who think love is not so “hunky-dorey.”

Apparently he said last night Monty is staying till the end of the tour now?! Hope so!

I thought that was already established as they didn’t really want to replace bass players again when they’re closer to the end of the tour — even if they had time to actually audition someone. I’m guessing, when they start working on their new album and recording, they’ll get a new bassist.

  • tierbee

The headline on the Gokey article is very misleading. It sounds like he’s ready to get married today. He’s just saying eventually he’d like to get married and have a family. And that his wife would have wanted him to be happy.

Nothing wrong with that… and I don’t think there is any “bravery” when it comes to dealing with loss. You handle it the best you can and some handle it better than others. I’m a person who is very private in my grief and I had a relative remark to me once at a funeral that I was “cold” because I wasn’t bawling (no, I don’t like that relative). So I guess in their mind, bawling = caring. I was hurting as much as anyone, I just preferred to go home and do that in private. I don’t know Danny so I have no clue how he’s handling things, you know?

Idol isn’t exactly a fantasy world for the contestants either. More like music boot camp.

I think more than one Idol alum has said that it was the hardest thing they’ve ever done. Look how anxious they get when they come back, lol.

  • koshka

Idol isn’t exactly a fantasy world for the contestants either. More like music boot camp. It’s a fantasy world for the fans though.

I too think the headline is misleading. They interviewer probably asked the question and Danny answered it. At some point in his life he should remarry. He is too young.

I think the dig on him being brave is that while we don’t really think about it directly anymore.. that is how he was promoted on the show. TPTB marketing pity and strength through aversion. I won’t make assertions about what hand Danny played in this since I didn’t watch this aspect closely.

As far as Idol not being a fantasy world… I couldn’t disagree more. The idols essentially have been treated like ‘rock stars’ since the beginning of the show. Lots of attention from TPTB, the media and fans. People sending them free crap, wanting autographs & professionals to advise. I also imagine they must have had something like a shared personal concierge to take care a a million little things they didn’t have time to take care of while on the show. We all know they did not have to worry about feeding themselves, I doubt they were standing in line at the washer and dryer… I can think of a million things that the show and tour does to make this easier on the idols. In the end I do believe that they earn it all. They all worked very long hours and went through a ton of sh1t to get to this point. When it comes down to the end… it is all an illusion & reality becomes painfully obvious to the delusional as soon as they step off the plane after the tour ends.

As soon as it gets quiet, the tour & recording is done, all this emotional stuff that he has sort of pushed aside is going to come like an avalanche. I’m sure he’ll make it out the other end ‘“ everyone complains about his foot in mouth disease, but his procrastination in mourning makes me wonder when the train wreck is coming.

I remember lots of folks around here were predicting that once the quiet time hit he’d have to face reality instead of putting it off via the AI whirlwind.

  • sma11ie

To me brave is the widow or widower who doesn’t retreat to the fantasy world of AI… Danny’s had it easy as far as I’m concerned.

Of course he’s grieved for his wife. Just because he participated in AI didn’t preclude him working through the death of his wife.

Everyone grieves differently. I’m not saying Danny’s dealt with it well at all, since I don’t think that throwing himself into the AI machine was the best choice he could’ve made, BUT, to say that doing AI means he’s had it “easy”? I don’t think it’s ever easy.

Danny will never ‘get over’ losing his wife and I think it’s unfair to criticise him on how he’s handling it. The guy can be annoying as all hell but no one knows how he is truly handling Sophia’s death.

Thanks Squirrely, well said and I agree.

I don’t think there is any ‘bravery’ when it comes to dealing with loss. You handle it the best you can and some handle it better than others.

I think there is bravery. It’s not the type of bravery it takes to run into a burning building to save people or to go fight a war, so I get what you’re saying– it’s not the type that deserves to be lauded by strangers… but it’s nonetheless a sort of personal, or emotional bravery, if you will. I dunno if that makes sense. That said, I agree that you handle it as best you can. That’s all anyone can do.

This reminds me of a great interview of David Cook recently. This is what he said:

Q: First off, condolences on the passing of your brother. Have you had enough time to grieve, or has throwing yourself into your work been a blessing?

A: A bit of both. Music has always been therapeutic for me. That’s why I started doing it in the first place.

Has this been the most ideal way to grieve? Maybe not. But it’s the most viable option. The last thing I would’ve wanted to do is cancel a bunch of dates and go home and wallow, then try to come back out and get people to care again.

I think my brother would want me to stay the course.

I feel like I’m dealing with it adequately. I’m dealing with it as best I can.

    Regarding the LA show:

And at least he didn’t drop an F bomb in front of Simon this time LOL That will never not be funny.

Pretty sure he said tough shit in one intro– I think before Died In Your Arms, he said he hopes it’s okay that he’s adding a song, but if not, tough shit they’re doing it anyway. Not as potent as the F bomb, but it’s something, heh.

  • jpfan

This Season’s contestants don’t seem that delusional to me. And the ones signed by 19 at least know that when the tour is over, they get a shot at a career as recording artists.

I doubt a nervous breakdown is ahead for Danny. He’s weathered a ton of criticism and seems to be doing ok.

  • wellhesback

David Cook’ s 9/11/ Twitter: take a minute to remember today and how an entire country, for once, put aside differences to get us to right now.

    His Twitter address is @thedavidcook

  • koshka

This past week has been very difficult for me, very sentimental,’ he said. He said because of the hectic schedule of the show and tour, ‘I haven’t been able to mourn or grieve. This week, I’ve been letting it out more than usual.

Niall these are Danny’s words, not mine. I don’t think we’ll see the meltdown I believe he has a good support system that consists of family and community, at least that is what it appears from the outside… With the show ending, Danny will not be on a full scale media blitz or writing his music. He’ll be busy recording, but not at the warp speed he’s used to now. He will have lots of time to reflect. His life has changed 180 degrees, even without the death of his wife. So.. no he is not done grieving for his wife or the life he is leaving behind. Kris, Adam and Allison will also be ‘grieving’ the life left behind. None of them will have ready access to friends and family anymore. Their lives and homes will be uprooted to a new location by necessity. This is tough. Think about transitioning your life across the US and starting a new job, finding a new home and making new friends. It is damn hard.

  • koshka

This Season’s contestants don’t seem that delusional to me. And the ones signed by 19 at least know that when the tour is over, they get a shot at a career as recording artists.

I think my using delusional was harsh.. but it is going to get very quiet for those that don’t have contracts. Even for those with ‘irons in the fire’ will find that some of this will not play out & they are going back to their old lives. I think that some of those without contracts that are going to try to make a go of music will really find out how harsh it is. The AI tie may not buy them as much notoriety or currency as they had hoped.

  • BestAI

I think these singers are only delusional if they think they were actually the best out of presumably 100,000 who auditioned. First, it was the luck of being in the right line and being heard. Second, if they had a backstory (I’m not just talking about Danny) that would make for an interesting reality show. Third, it needed to be a mix of mothers with children (there seemed to be so many this year in the top 36), and other criteria. The last few critieras are a mixed bag of talent, looks, charisma, and demographic.

Confirmed by Lambert as a collaborator on the LP is Lady GaGa’s producer, RedOne. The Idol runner-up reached out to GaGa herself ‘“ but due to scheduling conflicts they were not able to team up.

So I guess a duet with Gaga is out of the question. He should have written with her, she is a good songwriter.

i just posted abt this interview . It seems Adam doesn’t even know the guy. I detected a little snark that made me think he may have heard of the guy’s homophobic comments. we were just discussing it a few days ago and some were like why wld kevin write for Adam after making such stupid comments and he had seen adam’s popularity and maybe wanted in on it. maybe doesn’t even know the guy submitted a song. is that possible?. does he have to know all those who have submitted songs?

Yes, a few days ago. It’s old news. We had this exact conversation a few days ago in headlines–about Adam not knowing the better than ezra guy and all the songs he’s got in the can already.

If you post links in the headlines thread, please keep them as current as possible. If the date is a few days old, chances are (a very good chance) it’s been posted on another day.

Re. Ellen, im not a huge fan. I like her dancing and she can be funny at times. What I dont want on AI is a comedienne that is always “on”. It seems that comediennes think they must throw a joke in at every opportunity and to me, that gets old really fast. I also thinks this shows the producers just wanted rid of Paula and it wasnt about her salary, unless she was willing to return for low pay compared to the others. I think salaries were leaked to get her upset and she bit. You know Ellen is getting more then what Paula received and a 5 yr contract too??? Season 6 took the glow off AI for me, I turn the channel sometimes, seldom vote anymore. Depending on whats on tv this year, it maybe a non AI year for me.

  • Studio57

I don’t know all these different people. Who is Kevin Rudolph?

  • CindyM

Kevin Rudolf is an American singer-songwriter, and record producer. Rudolf is currently signed to Cash Money Records/Universal Republic. Born and raised in New York, he is currently based out of Miami, Florida. Rudolf’s debut single, “Let It Rock” featuring label-mate Lil Wayne was Certified Triple Platinum by the RIAA on May 5, 2009. It reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, #5 on the UK Singles Chart, #3 on the Australian Singles Chart, and #2 on the Canadian Hot 100. His second single “Welcome to the World” has reached #58 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Rudolf is currently in the studio working with: Lil Wayne, Birdman, Leona Lewis, Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert, Lifehouse, Three 6 Mafia & Jay Sean.

    Thanks CindyM.

  • halfie

Wow, did adamaloha ever nail that about Kevin Griffin — suspicious from the outset that he was taking more credit than he deserved. Score one for Hawai’i.

I went back and listened to the Griffin interview (at least the audio clip inserted with the article) and no where did he say he was writing for Adam. All he did say was that he knew what Adam’s producers wanted as a sound for the album.

It could be that the author ran with that and assumed he was writing for Adam. Or, perhaps, Griffin said that but it wasn’t excerpted in the audio clip.

  • BestAI

So, do you think there might be some sort of future collaboration between Adam and Elton John? Adam could just have said, Elton complimented him, but he was being really mysterious. Could Adam possibly open for Elton?

  • BeckyMD

Do i dare go look and see how much hate is headed jims twitter world right now.

Doubt Adam’s opening for Elton — I’ve seen elton a jillion times and he has never had an opening act….but YUM the idols ate at Gilbert’s in the Portland Old Port…love that place…Portland is so nice this time of year — hope its not pouring there today…now i’m craving lobster and chowder

  • BestAI

Doubt Adam’s opening for Elton ‘” I’ve seen elton a jillion times and he has never had an opening act.

Yeah, I’ve seen Elton. What a great show he puts on, but then again he’s had many, many great hits.

I’m just wondering why Elton and Adam might be talking to each other. Maybe Elton has a song or two he has written for Adam?

  • sma11ie

My take on the Adam/Kevin Griffin thing? Griffin approached RCA about writing for Adam, and some lowly person on RCA’s staff may or may not have given some rough guidelines on what sound they’re going for. He goes on to describe to MTV what he thinks the Adam’s sound will be, and chooses… interesting ways to do so, likely making his own assumptions.

Adam reads about this, and since Griffin only talked to a lowly RCA person, says he has no idea who he is, cuz he doesn’t. Griffin may or may not have submitted songs, or he may still be working on some prospective songs. But even if he submitted something, or even if someone on RCA staff is in contact with him, Adam probably hasn’t heard about it. He has enough to deal with without knowing these details early in the pipeline.

The “talent” on big labels often don’t get kept in the loop when there are so many moving parts. One example from following David Cook interviews last year, was when he initially talked about Light On, he excitedly told reporters that he was surprised and flattered that Chris Cornell approached them with the song. Later on, I read that Chris said DC’s people approached him. So DC started changing his tune in interviews and saying he wasn’t sure exactly who approached who first.

It turns out, from a radio interview with CC, Chris explains that an A&R guy approached him for songs in general (not specifically for DC), and CC responded jokingly that he only writes for David Cook now (this was when he was still fresh from the Billie Jean buzz and people were asking CC about it incessantly). The story goes, the A&R guy responds to the joke by telling CC that he actually represents DC, so CC then whips out LO, because he thinks it would be a good song for DC.

Anyway… all this just to illustrate the point that the talent doesn’t get told everything, that’s all. I’m not defending Griffin– his quotes were a bit strange, but I’m just saying he probably didn’t entirely dream up the part where he’s trying to write Adam a song.

  • harmony2009

So I guess a duet with Gaga is out of the question. He should have written with her, she is a good songwriter.

My impression is that it’s not out of the question. Probably won’t make it for the CD, but in response to the Gaga question, he did say that there “could be a surprise around the corner.”

I thought that Adam was wise to “be an open book” in the RS article, and not have anything, (presumably), that can pop up and derail him as his career gets started. It doesn’t seem to have hurt him, and he doesn’t have to worry about “skeletons”.

  • BestAI

Do we have to listen to the audio though MP3? I just read the interview, but would like to listen to it now.

As a major fan of Elton’s for almost 35 years, it’s always been interesting to me that he is fond of supporting acts he takes a shine to and often either works with them or just befriends them. I wouldn’t speculate that there are any plans for them to work together, but it is not out of the realm of possibility.

Back in the 70s he started his own record label and produced several artists. He recorded a Christmas song with the Killers and Neil Tennant just last year, has recorded duets with probably more than 20 artists (known and unknown), the list is really too long to articulate here. He’s tried to help Lily Allen and Robbie Williams with substance abuse issues (and going back a little further, Boy George and George Michael). He’s also well-connected in Hollywood, with his annual Oscar party for his AIDs Foundation.

Suffice it to say, Elton must have gotten wind of Adam’s rare vocal ability and either wants to record something with him in the future or just have a conversation with him sometime to provide advice as an “elder statesman” of the industry. He’s got the cred; he was inducted in the R&R Hall of Fame in 1994, has an Oscar, several Tonys and Grammys, and may wind up with an Emmy for the cable show he produces with Elvis Costello. In his day, Elton was quite well known for his outrageous costumes (feathers, anyone?) and elaborate stage shows. Even now, his concerts are ‘events’ rather than just a performance. And he is a consummate professional – has rarely missed a gig in 40 years except for laryngitis and a few bad bouts of flu.

And, not insignificantly, as a gay man who wasn’t always out and a recovering substance abuser (sober from drink and drugs since 1991), I think he’d have a lot to offer Adam in the way of “been-there done-that, here’s a few pitfalls and oh, by the way, don’t let fame go to your head” wisdom. I hope they do connect and manage to forge a friendship. It certainly would be to Adam’s benefit.

  • girlygirl

Interesting that Kevin Rudolph (Rudolf?) is working with Adam, Kris and Allison. He’s got a good reputation, so hopefully these collaborations turn out really well. And good for Allison that he gave her such a great compliment about being the favoritie person he’s ever worked with. Very sweet. I remember seeing Allison’s tweets when she was in the studio with him — she as SO excited.

Flove that episode of WaG, but I love them all. FF starts in 10. First screening ‘Modern Family’ (very funny), stripped down. No laugh track or opening. Oops, they’re playing Elton. I’m at Disney Expo in Anaheim, BTW.

  • rowenaaine

I’m having trouble with edit…so here’s one last post on the subject…promise! I don’t think Adam was being evasive so much as being respectful. He may have thought better of the namedropping, so once he was asked a followup question felt he ought to just leave it be.

That may, or may not, be Brian May’s real Twitter account. See; Underwood, Carrie for probable fakes. And not just that, but all this seasons idols had fakes before they ever got on Twitter. And this is a new account, so frankly? I think it’s more a fake than anything else.

YMMV, of course. But the timing and the amount and the kind of Tweets make me VERY suspicious, to say the least. It’s the internet, huge mines of salt should be taken with it at all times.

My personal opinion? A big old fake.

I have a feeling all the young, old and established Queens are looking out for Adam. And by Queens I mean those folks who are established with bands named Queen, and those who are just established Queens :-) (Elton John, etc.)

Chiming in on the Brian May Twitter Account — FAKE. I think he took it a step too far when he actually included in his tweet “reminds me of someone I lost.”

I don’t doubt that that could be true, however it seems an odd tweet.

I’m surprised that Kevin Rudolph is working Kris next month. For the most part, Kris’s collaborations have made sense and gave me the feeling that Jive “gets” Kris. But I don’t know about this one.

Excellent point that I missed. Yeah, what’s up with working with Kevin in a month, uh cutting it kind of close there. His album drops on Nov.17. It’s Sept. 11th now. So I would hope he was exaggerating a bit and that he has a chance to work with Kris for more than a few days before the album drops.

Meanwhile I’m stoked to hear that Kevin had such great things to say about working with Allison. That is very cool, I’m very happy. And it seems from what Allison says that it’s mutual. They really seemed to have clicked, so I hope some good music for her comes out of it.

Same for Adam and Kris of course, but that will be interesting to see if those tracks get picked up and/or work well. Hmmm.

Isn’t it possible that Kevin Rudolf is simply playing guitar on some tracks that are being recorded for all three Idols??

I didn’t think they would use Mad World for Flash Forward. I know Greys Anatomy has used great lesser known bands for some of their promos like Vega 4 and Augustana. When songs are used so often in commercials it gets people googling to find out who it is, which is a good thing. I google bands in promos/commercials on all the time. One of my favorites was from an earlier Ipod commercial- Walkie Talkie Man- I must have googled that for hours till I found the name of the band ( Steriogram) and ended up really loving their stuff. I think it’s great just that they used the song.

    Cindy- GREAT poster,lol.!

Sorry I don’t follow Kris much’ ¦ but could it be that bit of ‘urban’ influence that he was supposed to be experimenting with before the beginning of tour? The Heartless vibe?

That’s possible. He worked with a couple of R&B producers right after the show ended. But some of his recent interviews gave the impression that those collaborations did not really pan out like he wanted. More recently he has been working with people like Mat Kearney, Dan Wilson and Alex Band.

I am more suprised of the next month thing. Isn’t that a little late?

You’re right. All three of them are supposed to go in the studio for a couple weeks once the tour ends. But that collaboration does seem like it’s going to happen a little late in the game.

I love “Good Girls Go Bad.” But I am a little hesitant whenever I hear that the same person is working with Kris, Adam and Allison.

I was sort of hoping the sickies are well enough to put them all on a couch (Kris, Adam, Michael? who else?) and at least let them be there for the camaraderie. It would be a shame for them to all miss the end of tour party totally.

  • Truthiness

I didn’t think they would use Mad World for Flash Forward.

I don’t know how I feel about this. On the one hand, the first time I heard the House theme I was like ‘ZOMG! Massive Attack! I flove them! Mezzanine is one of the best albums of all time! I’m so glad that more people are being exposed to even a part of how pretty and cool they are!’

But the other part of me was like ‘pfft. How effing lame. Some show on Fox, yes even one I like, is using only a part of a song I like? Way to make it even more commerical and less cool than it already had been before…assholes. Corporate jerkwads? DIAF.’ I used to HATE when anything I liked became popular. I liked that it was underground and cool and them becoming popular lessened that, plus there was the whole ‘sell out,’ factor.

But as I’ve gotten older I’m more okay with some things becoming some degrees of popular and degrees of commerical success. I’ve gotten a sense of Zen about the whole thing and can actually root for things I liked to be commerically successful. So long story short, wish that Adam’s MW was part of the show.

The Idols are in Portland, ME — they drove up after the show last night.

And if Kris, Adam or any of the others are feeling well enough to go to the party tonight, they should go. This is the last time the 10 of them are going to be able to hang out together outside of the whole backstage at the venue stuff before the tour ends, and they should be able to be allowed to relax and have some fun if they feel up to it. Who knows when they will all be able to just hang out together as a group again once tour ends and they go their separate ways? I doubt they’ll be doing anything too strenuous at this party anyway — probably just sitting around having some food, maybe a couple of drinks and relaxing. If the fans get upset, well that’s too bad. It would be one thing if Kris or any of the others skipped a performance and then was seen out partying the same night — but this is more than 24 hours later. It’s more than possible they are feeling much better today than they were just 24 hours ago.

Wow, how interesting/almost sad to share your birthday with the event that (I believe) shaped modern Americanism. I have a birthday in a week and a day, and the only thing I’m heartbroken about is that Gram Parsons died on my 17th birthday. At this point,I seriously doubt most of you even know who he was…it still moves me, however.

My whole thing with Chikezie is that the first Beatles week, the man was f’ing amazing. The second week, I prayed for him not to try it again. He did, and the verdict was in. It’s like you can’t go home…you can’t make magic happen twice. We’ve all been there and done that and it was sooo last week. Yeah, so it didn’t work out so well, but on the tour Chikezie was awesome. So Happy Birthday Mr. Eze.

I really like David Archuleta, but I somehow think that everything he did when “he was just a wee lad” was a product of his father’s influence. I’m much more interested in what he says/sings/does now when, I believe, his father’s influence has been proven suspect by David.

I don’t know if he is shy, which isn’t apparent when he talks about himself and all his achievements, or if he just doesn’t care to become part of a group.

I am sure he will make a good living being a motivational speaker throwing some piano playing and a bit of singing in for good measure. But, he leaves me pretty cold!

I just could not image Brian using Twitter. It’s SOOO not his thing.

Well, blogging is. It’s really just abbreviated blogging. Oh wells, would have be fun …

  • Susan M.

Just got back and saw this:
My favorite music critic Ann Powers on Ellen with a mention of Adam Lambert

I love how Ann Powers writes …

  • Trina

    Aww

@thedavidcook I am honored to be the best man for the wedding of 2 of my closest friends this weekend. I just hope I don’t screw it up! ~D

    So cute.

I read through a little of Scott’s Twitter party, he bugs me so matter how hard I try to like him.

  • adamaloha

SusanM: I love how Ann Powers writes ‘ ¦

Yes. She’s one of the best in the business. Eloquent without being “flowery”, and insightful.

WTF – Scott is loving dog sledding and ice fishing in Toronto Canada??? Next thing he’ll be telling you he lived in an igloo. Shit.

  • Tess

number_1_fan: No I don’t have any pets… Do my instruments count? hehe

From Scott’s twitter party….I thought Paula set him up with a guide dog for his use after the tour. Wonder if that fell through or if the dog hasn’t been chosen yet. If he does get one, I wonder how long he and the dog will have to go to a training location together. I don’t think there is a nobler beast alive than a “guide dog”.

  • mandabutter

From ExpressNightOut, former Idols tweet about Ellen taking Paula’s chair. >> Michael Castro, season eight contestant for five minutes and brother of season seven contestant Jason Castro: Just heard Ellen degeneres is the 4th idol judge?! “….?!”
also: “Alex Wagner-Trugman, season eight contestant: wasnt four judges the problem last year? who knows, maybe theyve figured out the science of fitting 6 two minute songs in a one hour slot.”

I just love how they described Mike Castro. I concur with everything Trugs writes. Since they, the producers, were hell-bent on having 4 on the panel, I’m glad its someone like Ellen. Maybe it’ll make the others step up their game. I thought Randy AND SIMON were absolutely useless this season [and in many cases way-off base and totally scripted. ahem...Allison I.'s critiques]

  • mandabutter

And this certainly isn’t scientific, but if memory serves me — Ellen’s most frequent musical guests have been John Legend [who I freakin' love] and Pink.

Did anyone find a review of last night’s concert? I haven’t seen one…

  • iluvai

Ok ‘“ this was on the concert thread, but it should have been posted here: BRIAN MAY ON TWITTER!!!!!

Click back just one page, and you’ll see that’s been posted a couple of times already. There’s already been a full-blown discussion on the topic.

Clicking back even two or three pages to catch up on a thread would be the thing to do if you are thinking of posting a link. Thank you.

Hi MJ. I have found it really difficult to get a complete listing of the comments. If there are a lot, it takes a long time to click “read older comments” to get to the beginning. Before, you could click once and the site would take you right to the start of the comments. If there is a quicker way to get to the beginning of the comments, I would like to know. Thanks!!!

Click on “Older comments” once (that will take you to the previous page. Then go to the address bar in your browser:

    http://mjsbigblog.com/idol-headlines-for-091109.htm/comment-page-5#comments

Change the “comment-page-5#” to “comment-page-1#” – that will take you to the first page of comments. That’s the workaround MJ gave us for thread pages and it works for me. It’s also much faster just to keep changing page numbers as you read.

Which is why I didn’t look when I should have. It just takes so blasted long right now if you’re in a hurry! Hopefully tonights upgrade will at least speed things up.

From what I understand Paula’s ‘gift’ wasn’t something Scott needed. I guess. Paula just doesn’t know how to come to the rescue sometimes, though I’m sure she has a rescuer’s heart…

LOL..fan art new version of the 2012 poster’ ¦

    That’s gorgeous

I like it a lot better than the actual poster

I agree with the comments about how cumbersome it is now to navigate to the different pages in a thread, even changing the number of the pages manually. Also, sometimes when you get to a new page, you need to refresh for the comments to show, since only part of the page shows at first. With the update the page is still slow, we lost the numbered pages feature and only got avatars which are too small to see. Let ´s see what happens with the new update.

I can believe that Scott got outside of Toronto to somewhere rural and cold to ice fish, but dog sledding?????????? You need to be way up north for any of that. Surely someone was making a joke. :)

ETA: Well, I guess Scott could have traveled to northern Canada but that’s a big trip to take especially in winter! I guess the point is there is something quite stereotypical about linking Canada to dog sledding… I would be surprised if 5% of Canadians have ever seen a dog sled (well I am really guessing here, it could be 1%). Northern Canadians, correct me if I’m wrong… as a southern Canadian, I no doubt harbour lots of stereotypes of my own.

  • Ladyguard

WTF ‘“ Scott is loving dog sledding and ice fishing in Toronto Canada??? Next thing he’ll be telling you he lived in an igloo. Shit

We have dog sledding and ice fishing in Toronto?

  • birchtree

We have dog sledding and ice fishing in Toronto?

Us true eastern Canadian (maritimes) are never surprised at what you city slickers get up to!!!! Anyway, good on Scott for ferreting out the most obscure aspects of city living in a southern clime!

  • pjd

All you need for dog sledding is snow (and of course the dogs and sled!). My son did it in Northern Minnesota a couple years ago. I’m pretty sure Toronto has snow, so dog sledding is possible.

I would think dog sledding would be a little scary if you can’t see.

  • NewFan

Dogsledding and ice fishing are not done in Toronto even when there is snow (full stop).

  • steve

Lmao if you google ice fishing and dog sledding you get all kind of results for toronto.Yes they are not in downtown toronto. If scott like to do them why not take a couple hour drive.Would we talk about this if ADAM tweeted it.NO i think it would of been hope he post some pictures of him doing it.
I LOVE THIS SITE IT MAKES ME LAUGH SO HARD AT TIMES.

  • NewFan

    Steve,
Stop trying to bait and bite Torontonians (and Adam fans). You can try to stir up some trouble if you like … but we’re the ones who are laughing hardest … at you my dear, at you.

  • steve

lol people laugh at scott for saying he likes icefishing and i’m baiting. No just facts he lived in torinto and tons of ads for it.

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ice+fishing+toronto+area&aq=3sx&oq=icefishing+tor&aqi=g-sx1g-s1g-sx2

Its like saying you live in baltimore,md so you cant like the ocean or snow skiing but both are 2 hours away.

  • NewFan

Take the last word if you need to Steve. It is an uneducated one and I’m not staying to hear it. I don’t need to Google Toronto. I was born there and I lived there for more than half of my life. I’m not saying that Scott didn’t live in Toronto and I’m not saying that he or other Torontonians wouldn’t like ice fishing. I’m saying that you won’t find dog sledding or ice fishing in Toronto. So go and cast some rancid bait elsewhere. I won’t be giving your attention seeking any more of my time. I’ll see you in the concert thread this evening. You, your comments and, even your facts, are quite amusing … so I look forward to it.

    Bye bye now.
