‘American Idol’ Showcases Generational Shift That Marketers Must Be Wary Of – But what is so fascinating – and why we should care about this show – are the changes in contestants’ attitudes as season after season has bridged the time from economic gluttony to the economic gutter many find themselves in today. As a direct result of this recession, Generation Y isn’t what conventional wisdom and demographers alike first thought: it isn’t one big giant mass of 80 million kids. Instead, it is two very different, very unique cohorts – Generation Y and what I call Generation Green – both about the same size but growing up in very different environs. American Idol is a window into these two groups and the impact they have on the American marketplace. Read more at Forbes Magazine

Kellie Pickler stands on tradition – On Kellie Pickler’s eighth birthday, her dad was in jail, the same place he spent much of her childhood. But Clyde Pickler didn’t let the day go unrecognized. He worked odd jobs in the facility and saved up enough money to give his young daughter a choice: She could have a television for her room or a radio. For Pickler, the decision was easy, and it changed her life. – Read more at the Tennessean

Before his foray into the American Idol challenge, Urban performed at coffeehouses and cafes in his native Texas, and released his own CD of original music in 2008. Jennifer Lopez Slammed In Anti-Nuclear Iran Fiat Parody Video (EXCLUSIVE) – After writing Jennifer Lopez an open letter, asking her to renounce her endorsement relationship with Fiat — a company accused of supporting Iran’s ballistic missile transportation — United Against Nuclear Iran has now released a parody video, further vocalizing the singer’s involvement with the company. The video, given exclusively to The Huffington Post, shows Lopez’s Fiat commercial spot, in which she is driving through her born-and-raised Bronx, spliced with images of violence at the hands of the Iranian regime. Mirroring the smooth-talking Lopez in her joy ride spot, the parody features a similar voice-over with a very different sentiment. – Huffington Post

Louis Van Amstel talks about his ‘Dancing With the Stars’ future and new line of workout DVDs – EW caught up with Dancing With the Stars pro Louis Van Amstel, who’s on tour to promote his lifestyle brand (and just-released 5-disc workout DVD set) called LaBlast Fitness. Louis (pictured with Kelly Osbourne during season 9) didn’t compete on ABC’s dance hit last fall, but don’t worry — he’s on contract for five more years. “I’m liking the balance of having one season on, one season off,” he said. “But I’m ready to be back on. So far I have walked out with all the partners I’ve had as good friends — some of them were a little crazy of course, but it’s such a nice journey.”b8f7-64e4d90ec0e0.html#ixzz1k0qYLj92 – Read more at Entertainment Weekly

Hey MJ – Casey J is debuting at the GOO next Friday, Jan 27th – at least I think so. But heck, maybe he’s playing there twice, which would be just fine with me.

Another big decline for AI last night.  The show didn’t draw 20 million and lost in the demo to the Big Bang Theory at 8 pm.

Great article on Kellie. It’s nice to see the assurance from Gary Overton that Kellie’s record deal is safe as long as he’s the label head. I’m a little surprised the article even brought up Kellie’s record deal now being fulfilled unless Sony picks up its option for a 4th album. I guess that might mean Kellie’s deal with 19 is done after 3 albums and after this 4th one, it would just be Kellie signing with BNA without 19.

    And, this is cute:

Gary Overton, chairman and CEO of Sony Music Nashville, says her winning track record is easy to explain.

“She’s really hard not to love,” he says. “We’ve had some disagreements over time, and anyone else you’d just want to wring their necks, and she just looks at you with those big eyes and smiles at you with that little mischievous grin and you go, ‘Alright, we’ll do it your way.’ ”

I hope that it is for a major televised event (Olympics?) and that Adam will be getting a truckload of dough to do it.  lol

  • Anonymous

Okay Bridgette, breathe! I was hoping for this and can’t wait to see what they have planned together. Adam is going to be a very busy guy this year, between promoting the new album, working with Queen, and touring both in the States and Internationally, he’s not going to have a whole lot of free time for family, boyfriend and friends.

I’m so happy for The Big Bang Theory.  It was their 100th episode.

To add to elliegrll’s ratings post, here are last night’s preliminary numbers from tvbythenumbers:

I’m trying not to get too many high expectations, but that would be glorious. Even if it’s not that, any performance with Queen, will be amazing. I just wish, they would do one in the States.

  • Anonymous

Yes – am OK with an occasional big event, but nothing more extensive than that.  And, from what he’s said, believe Adam wants his music/career to come first.  Good.

  • Anonymous

I just want to hear more Queen songs from him. I have had this obsessive need since Season 8 to hear him sing Under Pressure, lol :D

  • Anonymous

I don’t think the lower ratings is that big of a deal, because there are quite a lot of people like myself can’t stand to watch the audition shows anymore. Between the sob stories, over hyped contestants, and creampuff judges, it can be nauseating sometimes. Ratings will pick up when they get down to the top 36.

  • Anonymous

He says it will set the stage for the light/dark themes of the album. I also think he said something about how it feels to not have the one you love with you. I think it will be all Adam with some abstract dark, angry vibe scenes and then stripped back tender scenes like the still that was posted. Clear as mud, lol?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYFK77IYLRQIVATQ2MJKSW2J7Y Pam

I’ve just added the ratings table to my previous post and tried to fix the table on this page so that it might be a little easier to read.

  • Anonymous

The Queen one offs are sheer win to me. I don’t think Adam will be setting aside any of his own music to do this and I am sure he will be able to do both. This will set him up as someone to be reckoned with internationally, IMO. An artist who can easily slide between holding his own with a legend like Queen while supporting and international Pop star career. Respect.

  • Anonymous

I was hoping it would be better, but not surprised, it was TBBT 100th episode and it was the republican presidential debate. Hopefully this will be the season low.

Read Forbes article.  As usual in these generational-split articles, it’s a bit too pat.  The “entitled” and the “opportunity” divergence?  May be some truth to it, but in the current economy, not sure too many whatever age are feeling entitled.  Regarding the “greening” of the younger group – may be more “earth” conscious than the older due to its constant emphasis in the schools and media – but don’t think anyone’s really escaped its influence.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I totally agree.  Preferably, an occasional big event that is televised widely.

    1) yay for more Adam/Queen
    2) more reviews from UK listening sessions coming out today. All are stellar. The label and PR team must be pretty confident in this material to preview it 2months prior to release and allow reviews to be published. Good way to build buzz ( in the UK at least…)
    3) idol ratings unsurprising and no big deal. The show is ten years old. Nothing retains monster ratings forever ( and the ratings are still good). But I think there is fatigue with reality singing comps, even more fatigue with the silly audition rounds, and much stronger competition in the timeslot ( I know I’m opting for parks & rec and modern family, at least till we get
to top 24). The show still makes money hand over fist.

  • Nele621

Unless we hear it from the band Queen, we don’t really know if Queen and Adam are going to perform together this year.

  • Nele621

I still think the ratings went way down from last year because of Tyler and J-Lo. The anticipation of them last year, and the disappointment of them by the end of the season.

I also think it’s the best show for past idol contestants to promote their new music, so hopefully it won’t go anywhere for a long time.

  • Anonymous

Brian May and Roger Taylor have both mentioned several times that they are looking to do more with Adam. No dates have been mentioned by them or Adam but from what Adam said it looks like some dates have been discussed. I doubt Adam would say it without some basis.

  • mmb

Adam plays things like this really close to the vest. Rarely announces things unless they are a done deal ( and then is usually the last to acknowledge they are happening lol) Obviously things can always fall through but if he states in 2 separate radio interviews that he will be singing with Queen again this year I think it’s a safe bet that something is happening

Scotty did an interview this morning with his hometown station. He talked about David Leathers Jr. (the kid that beat Scotty in a singing competition on the 1st episode). He said technically nobody won. It was the semifinals round & both of them made it, but they canceled the rest of the competition because the competition didn’t have enough financial backing. So there was no winner.

  • Anonymous

May need a stiff drink to get through this episode – lol.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AGWO435FL6UN2ICRVTFLWRJZSA Lexie

This is what I’d heard.  And it’s one of those things bugging me.  Over 1K articles came out yesterday with the comment Idol found the one who beat Scotty in a previous competition.  David Leathers twisted the truth, shall we say, and I don’t want the kid pilloried, but I’d like it fixed.

  • Anonymous

I have no interest in hearing him sing Queen songs.  I want him to focus on his own music and hopefully have a decent sophomore era.

  • Anonymous

Well, it will be interesting if David makes it far. Scotty will probably be coming back to perform & they might ask him about David after his performance. It will be interesting what Scotty says if Ryan asks him.

release of Let’s Get To What’s Real, the new studio album by pop-soul
    singer/songwriter Elliott Yamin, on March 27, 2012….

    The
first single off of “Let’s Get To What’s Real,” is the memorable
pop/soul ballad “3 Words,” which will be serviced to radio shortly. This
single was written by David Hodges, …
    Yamin
states, “I have grown so much in every way since my last record; this
new album is all of me: my heart, mind, and soul. I feel like for the
first time, I’ve been able to make a record that personifies who I am as
an artist and where I’m going creatively. It is something I am
immensely proud of and I can’t wait for my fans to hear it.”

    Russell
Johnson, co-CEO of Purpose Music Group says, “George Littlejohn and I
are honored to be working with Elliott. We’ve both been fans since we
first heard him sing “A Song For You” during his American Idol audition.
We feel that Elliott is one of the most gifted pure vocalist of his
    generation.”

    Exactly, Annieba!!

Adam definitely has both the vocals and showmanship to do justice to any and all of Queen’s music on stage.   Queen also still attracts a large audience, many of whom may be seeing Adam for the first time.   I feel this is one of the best promo opportunities that Adam would be fortunate enough to receive.

  • http://twitter.com/svmreiter Susan Reiter

Me too!  And for very selfish reasons – that I just loved seeing him perform with Queen! – I hope he really does get more opportunities.  The stamp of approval of a band like Queen — you can’t buy that kind of publicity IMO!

  • http://twitter.com/svmreiter Susan Reiter

I hope he does BOTH like he said! ; )

Okay. Next question- were you born before or after 1980, lol?

Just kidding around but I am wondering if you are young and just don’t realize how much Queen has inspired just about everyone these days, including Gaga who is named after one of their songs? There are a handdful of classic rock bands that no singer in their right mind would turn down the chance to jam with. Queen is one of them. Front? No way in hell- but play jam out with? HELLS YEAH.

  • Anonymous

I was born in 1991 and I honestly don’t care.  I just have no interest in it.  Call me when he collaborates with Katy Perry!

  • Anonymous

I was born in 1988 and I’m pretty excited at the idea of Adam doing a one-off or two with Queen. :) I would never want him to tour with them or anything, but I love them, and I do think that it’s great promotion for Adam’s own music as well.

Though it would also be cool to see him do something with Katy Perry. :)  She’s not the best singer but she’s awesome and such a fun performer and they seem to really like each other.  Plus I actually really like her voice on her acoustic stuff, and they could probably do something really pretty/cool together.

  • Anonymous

I don’t see why doing a collaboration or two with Queen would somehow prevent him from pursuing his own career work.  It’s not like it’s an all or nothing scenario.

  • Nele621

I was watching a few Queen performances by past idols. Constantine Maroulis was actually pretty good. Kellie Pickler was just OK. Something not good about Michael Johns. I think he was pitchy throughout.

Queen needs to have a concert or two. Their music is just too good for us not to hear them live, and most people who try to sing them fall flat. I can see Adam singing with Queen. He seems to be a good fit with them. I’ve only heard Maroulis sing the one song, but from that one, he might also be a good fit. I think one needs a big range, so that would eliminate most of the male singers out there.

  • Anonymous

We heard it from Adam one of the parties involved, and we know that Queen has said they would like to collaberate again. I find this easy to believe.

  • Nele621

Katy is so popular now, I don’t see her singing with anyone unless they are superstars. I don’t think her people would think it would help her career to collab with Adam.

  • Anonymous

Adam seems absolutely committed to promoting the new album. If he wants to do something with Brian and Roger on the side it’s fine. Do not panic, LOL.

Katy and Adam would be awesome, but I prefer RiRi. :) But I don’t care if there is no collab either, with anyone.

As for Idol ratings, I don’t watch until Top 24, auditions are tedious and uncomfortable to me.

I was a guest at a civic organization’s Christmas Party at a restaurant last month. We were having dinner when a Queen song ( ‘Somebody to Love’) came over the sound system. Unknowlingly ;) I started humming along which caused the boy across the table from me to look up and say “You know a Queen song?” I confirmed that they were my favorite band, to which he replied “I love Queen, I think they are my favorite too.” I asked him how old he was, to which he replied “Ten”. We proceeded to have an interesting discussion about Freddie and the band during which he said at one point, “and you know they just played on TV a few days back with that guy, uh, Lambert I think his name is.” I had to ask him if he liked it and he said he had only watched it on his computer but thought it was “pretty good”.

So you see, there are people younger than yourself that do know and like Queen. If is perfectly fine that you don’t care and don’t listen, but I believe that his association with the group will open new doors to such people as this current and future music buyer.

So weird – did he swallow the gum?

  • Anonymous

Just watched the James performance, I actually didn’t like this one as much as some of his other recent acoustic performances.  And he looked really, really tired.  Was he at the Zakk Wylde roast last night that was hosted by Sharon Osbourne?  I saw one of his band members tweeted a picture of him speaking and said it was at the Zakk Wylde roast.  Was he actually one of the “roasters”?  That roast was crawling with rock and metal people – if so that had to be good for him and an honor if he was asked to speak.

  • Anonymous

Me, too! I like the Japanese version of this album, but I gather that the American one will be less electronic, less poppy, and more of Elliott the traditional singer.

I hope Elliott and these companies get to develop a relationship. They seem really suited to each other, and it would be nice to see him have a home from which to develop a long-term, if low-key, career singing the neo-soulish stuff that really is so much up his vocal alley….Will be interesting to see if they manage to promote him successfully to the radio stations that play that music. They seem to target their musical efforts, so maybe that’ll help …

I don’t have a problem with a kid beating Scotty or any ex-Idol in any competition if it’s the truth. My favorite Idol alum is Adam. I wouldn’t want anybody to say he was beaten in a competition when he wasn’t.

The problem is he told 20+ million viewers on the premiere he beat Scotty when he didn’t. If he gets far & it sounds like the judges love him that he will be in the top 24, the truth will come out in the media & that’s the problem. He flat out lied to the audience or at the very least stretched the truth & that might come to bite him if he gets far especially considering it was about a popular winner.

  • Chris

I had it on TIVO and Ryan asked “did you beat Scotty?”  And he kind of himmed and hawwed, but he didn’t flat out lie and say yes, I beat him, but he didn’t just tell the truth either, that it was more of a tie.

It could hurt him when it comes time to vote, but I am guessing they will put some spin control around it, if he is good.  It just means he will be like Astro on X Factor.

  • Chris

I wish I could see it but they don’t come to my state – sad face.  That, and when I checked Ticketmaster, all the shows are sold out or bad seats only left, behind the stage.

  • Anonymous

He didn’t flat out say yes, but he did say “i guess you can say i did” when asked by Ryan. I have more of a problem with him saying they placed 1st & 2nd when Scotty said there were still 3 other groups left in the competition. They were 1st & 2nd of their group. Which meant there were still other contestants besides the two of them. Then the competition was canceled.

I could see Idol doing some spin control to help him if he gets to voting rounds.

David never said he “won” anything, he just said you could say he “came out on top.” If in one of the rounds, he was 1st and Scotty was 2nd, then technically he had a higher placement on top. He in no way lied. It’s the press took his statements a step farther and use words like beat and won when David did not. The blame lies with then, not David.

Does it really matter if another boy once came out on top in one round of a talent show years ago? Scotty is on top of the world in terms of success right now and I for one don’t see it slowly down for a while.

I didn’t like David anyway – too screetchy

My first tickets I bought were side stage, then I found a single ticket on the floor, so I have a decent seat.

David probably has the same problem a lot of people have, they pad their resume.  However, he is 17 and foolish enough to not realize that he was on camera and facts can be checked.  This wasn’t just bragging to some kids at school who wouldn’t know better.

However, I don’t think this is fatal.  Especially after watching all of the X Factor teens implode. Will he win, no but he did sing well in his audition so perhaps he can make it to the top 20′s, maybe top 10 if he has some really good nights.

Tweets coming out of the concert so far say Lauren was great and Luke is sexy.  Sounds like a good show.

I could probably find 1 ticket on Stub Hub, but the closest show is a 3 hour drive.  I only did that once to take my daughters to the Jonas Brothers/Hannah Montana concert.

I’ll wait for vids, or Jason posted they are adding more dates.  And he said on his website, Lauren will be with him “for at least the first part of the tour.”

Not sure where to post this, but Amy Brumfield (season 11 “tent girl” as they are calling her) is a top story on AOL tonight, about her checkered past.

Oh I wasn’t saying I thought a collaboration was imminent or anything, just that it would be cool. :)

I guess Lauren sang Kelly’s part with Jason tonight.  Cool

  • BonnieDee

The tweets from the crowd at Aldean concert are all extremely favorable.

  • BonnieDee

Jason brought Lauren out on stage and they sang “Don’t You Wanna Stay.”

Agh ! Video please ! I’m glad that Lauren got a good reception.

  • BonnieDee

Still waiting for someone to post a video of DYWS.  Everyone was tweeting about it like crazy.  Said she did great.

BonnieDee: Jason brought Lauren out on stage and they sang “Don’t You Wanna Stay.”

That’s sweet of Jason and I’m sure Jason means well but the idea of a 17 year old singing that song with a 30 something guy is just weird to me. Somebody on twitter said it was like acting but I’d be saying the same thing if a 17 year old were playing the love interest of a 30 something on TV or in a movie :p I’m also not too happy about it putting Lauren in the position of being compared to Kelly because that kind of thing in Idolland doesn’t usually go well.

But, I’m sure Lauren sounded great and it’s a great opportunity for her. I’m looking forward to at least listening to her sing this live, not sure if I’ll want to watch.

  • BonnieDee

Somebody said they had a video but haven’t posted it yet.  I’m sure Lauren knew that she would be compared to Kelly, and I know she would not try to say she is as good as Kelly or anything like that.  She is very humble.  She came right off stage and tweeted a thank you to Jason Aldean right away.  From what I heard she did a very good job.

I am glad Lauren got the opportunity to sing with Jason. I kinda fear for this video, because of the she to young to be singing this comments. People can get real nasty. We saw what happened with the GP video and all she did was wear a cut off shirt and dance. I can only imagine what people are going to say once this video get posted.
Anyway I am glad, because this is some good exposure for Lauren, even though the song is adult.

  • BonnieDee

I’m kind of holding off on commenting on that because I haven’t seen it yet and I want to see how they did it, and if they changed the lyrics slightly or not.  But if they didn’t I still think that the song is supposed to transcend the singers and their personal lives.  I was more worried about Lauren being compared to Kelly than anything.

  • Anonymous

Yeah I am worried about the Kelly thing to but not so much as the she to young comments be singing this comments, because those types of comments are more directed at her character. We know Lauren has a good voice, but she is different from Kelly so maybe she put a nice beautiful spin on it. Only reason I am not worried about the kelly thing is because only people in the idol bubble will hard core compare her like that. People outside the idol bubble won’t make such deep comparisons to the original. Yes they may compare it,but not as harshly as idol bubble people.

  • Chris

Oh, cool for Lauren. I stopped watching the tweets after a while but this was a concert, Kelly wasn’t there. “Fill in” singing happens all the time for duets. Actually, live maybe more satisfying than Jason singing alone to a track of Kelly.

he didn’t beat SCOTTY….THEY WERE THE 2 FINALIST..the contest ended due to money issues,,so a winner never was named,,,think it was rather silly of Mr Leathers to insinuate that he won…..
