Haley Johnson is beautiful, and has a nice breezy style. I think she seems very relatable, and like an indie type that the audience might actually become attached to.

I think being in an a capella group is good training for the show, because you learn about arranging, so that could serve her well on the show as well. I think she has potential to do really well on the show.

If she is an indi type and would win all we would hear about is how bad her sales are. These type of artist dont do well post idol

I don’t think she really seems indie, her voice actually sounds like it could be commercial. Her style is a little too breezy though, but maybe she’d come across differently if she were singing competitively.

  • chessguy99

She almost comes across as sleepy, not so good when you want your fans fanatically voting, instead of snoozing while listening to your latest performance on repeat.

Is that the same Haley? The girl in the last video looks different from the one in the first ones…

  • chessguy99

Three years difference in the posting of the videos, is the reason for the difference in looks. The last one is over three years old, the first two are less than a month old.

  • TheOther

She really has a nice voice.  And she is a pretty girl.  But I am afraid her looks will work against her on AI, in favor of a cute young guy in a plaid shirt.

She has a nice voice and good tone.  I like her but as was noted in a earlier post here, the indie types don’t usually have high sales numbers once their idol run is over.

I like her. I hope she makes it on.

  • Leandro Cardim Da Silva

The harmonies on the last video is one of the biggest mess I’ve seen so far. lol

  • http://twitter.com/HaleysShindig HaleysShindig

I like her and as far as Indie, if the girl can sing, which she can, there is nothing saying that she HAS to stay Indie. I’m sure Jimmy Iovine would find some way to make her voice work in a more popular genre.

Is anyone else seeing Cindy Brady?

  • Incipit

I kinda like her voice, even on the audio here, which is not the best  - she has a sense of nuance about when to power up and power down, and she has some power at her disposal. I think the musicianship and the acapella experience is a plus, always – in understanding chord choices and harmonies one comes to understand what their voice can do.

Since the producers seem to be picking a lot of children again, I’d like to see some youngsters who know who they are as vocalists, and as artists. Maybe they won’t be such a pushover for Iovine and assorted crew.

Also, the bangs are cute. Heh.

  • durbfan

She’s good but boring. Can’t we get some edgier contestants?

I really like Haley’s voice.   I think she could go far on Idol.  Cute girl.

Anyone who sings Janelle Monae might finally get me to vote after 8 seasons of idle Idol watching.

    Beautiful rendition of “Sir Greendown.”

  • hazuki

Calling it now, Dark Horse right here.

  • Jes Merrill

    OMG.

  • iani

I love her voice, the tone as well, very smooth and the girl seems a very nice, calm person. Great videos.

She can belt “all” but has to go into falsetto for “deep”, as many girls do, and that’s probably not going to change.  She gets boring quickly because she has not even started on the next phase of singing, which is ‘meaning and interpretation’.  But she’s cute and her voice is beautiful.  That may be enough to get her into the thick of it.

  • http://twitter.com/HaleysShindig HaleysShindig

Its physiologically impossible for a woman to have “falsetto”. (Fact I learned recently:) ) The term is “Head voice”, which is fine for that part of the song IMO.

  • http://twitter.com/lufflyness Jenna

Who belts the “deep” in that song?

  • Leandro Cardim Da Silva

there isn’t a science about these terms, even between vocal coachs, but a falsetto is just a head voice without resonance. A light tone, that many times can be beautiful. In both cases there aren’t resonance thourgh your chest (chest voice, also full/belt voice), but in some head voices u can find a lot resonance through your skull. So, IMHO, I don’t see how it’s imposible, but I would like to know more about it.

She has a pretty voice but I’m not seeing any star power or “spark” from her. Maybe she will surprise me.

  • http://twitter.com/Miztig Miz

I love her voice and interpretation. She has a very good look as well. I think she can go far.

As far as the tweens and teens are concerned, I think her looks will appeal to them – both female and male. Girls were the biggest voters for Katherine McPhee when she was on. I think ditto for Jordan Sparks and Carrie Underwood.

She’s really good and very cute! I agree that the acapella experience can help with arranging her songs. Of course, if Jimmy and the producers arrange everything, it won’t matter.

  • Anonymous

Vicci Martinez… HaleyR and Adele herself switch into falsetto, or head voice, if you prefer.  A rose by any other name…and falsetto by any other name is still falsetto.

  • http://twitter.com/BazzleFjsm Bazzle

so are you saying your waiting for someone who actually sings that bit in chest voice? its quite difficult ……. but possible. but i think it sounds nice in head voice

  • Incipit

durbesque – the place in the score where a singer switches from chest voice to head voice depends on the individual, and where the ‘break’ is in their voice. The fortunate ones can transition smoothly, and not lose resonance.

The terminology may be shifting, and the use of ‘falsetto’ for a woman’s head voice may have gained currency – so I suppose that means all First Sopranos are singing falsetto? Maybe not. Even a few of them (Mariah Carey, Donna Summer, Minnie Ripperton – off the top of my head) have a ‘whistle register’ – and that’s not called falsetto either.

For me – that term is reserved to male voices..YMMV, and obviously does.

But then, every time Randy, or anyone else says ‘pitchy’ I cringe. I almost clapped when Harry Connick Jr called Randy on that in Season 9. That term does not mean what he assumes it to mean…but it’s gained currency too. Doesn’t make it an actual description, KWIM?

This contestant seems able to transition smoothly, even in the older video – and Idol Voice coaches can give her tips, if she gets through – and hopefully, there will be songs available to chose from that will showcase the strengths of her vocals. Not every (or many) popular songs are ‘singers’ songs.

    JMO.

I think she has a really good voice and seems to be a good musician also.  Hope she does well.  I think she’s indie but she could go pop also.

  • GS61

She has a nice tone to her voice, but she’s kind of boring. I don’t know maybe it’s me but really none of these videos had me going WOW!
I hope once the show gets going these kids step it up or we’re in for a real snooze fest.

She is great. The girls rock this year.

  • Alyssa Dart

    Rude.

  • http://twitter.com/BazzleFjsm Bazzle

This girl isn’t getting enough screen time…. please let her be a darkhorse… there is too many people this season trying to make every song explode…………. lets cool it down a bit… i like her style….

  • Incipit

Makes you wonder, doesn’t it, bazzle. Plenty of focus on other female contestants, but I never even caught sight of her again until Vegas – and she shows up in what was arguably the best number done there – “The Night has a Thousand Eyes”.

She sounded fine to me – at this stage of the game, that’s saying a lot – nothing about her voice annoys me. Can’t say the same about some others.  Still, much depends on what happens next. I like her, anyway…and I’m interested to see if she gets a chance to shine.

  • http://twitter.com/BazzleFjsm Bazzle

Haha yes couldn’t agree more i just hope she does. But its going to be hard when she had so little screen time.

Judging from alot of the other girls i’m willing to bet that there are going to be alot of very big performances with a couple of big songs in the top24. I think she should stick to standing out by being subtle cos she doesn’t have the most powerful voice but it is one of the nicer ones.

this song could be good, with a little change like a build up in dynamics at the end to make sure it doesn’t fall into randy’s ‘sleepy’ category. I think it could be a fantastic performance.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD_nNo_-aMQ Haley can belt like crazy as well but she is very clever of when is the right time to use it… i love the girls transition to ‘headvoice’ its so smooth.
Erika and Elise are also two of my favourites… such good heavy tones but such good control.I still have that last run of “Night Of A Thousand Eyes” stuck in my head.
