DJ AM Found Dead in New York City Apartment

DJ AM was once engaged to Nicole Richie.   He survived–along with Blink 182′s Travis Barker–a plane crash last year that killed 4 people. DJ AM had a history of substance abuse, and had filmed a substance-abuse intervention show with MTV called “Gone Too Far” that aimed to warn young people about the perils of drug abuse. The show was scheduled to premiere in October.

DJ AM has reportedly been found dead in his New York City apartment, according to multiple media sources, including TMZ and NBC New York. He was 36.

TMZ, citing a police source, reported that DJ AM (real name: Adam Goldstein) was found in his apartment at 5:20 p.m. ET on Friday afternoon (August 28). Citing “sources,” the site also claimed that prescription medication bottles had been found near his body. The site also said that Goldstein had not been seen or heard from in days, and that friends who had previously gone to check on him had received no response. When police broke in the door, they reportedly found Goldstein’s body.

A New York Police representative told MTV News on Friday that a 36-year-old white male had been found dead at 210 Lafayette Street in New York but had not yet been identified. Calls to DJ AM’s rep for confirmation had not been returned at press time.

The news comes just under a year after Goldstein and Travis Barker survived a plane crash that killed four people. Leaving from Columbia, South Carolina, after a performance by the duo, the small Learjet they were on crashed upon takeoff ‘” giving the two musicians serious burns and leaving them in critical condition.

    I remember hearing about the accident. It had to be incredibly traumatic to survive, and I would assume that he had a lot of physical pain as well from his injuries. What a shame.

    He was a recovering addict. I wonder if the pain from his injuries and the need for pain meds got him hooked on drugs again…

    Sources tell TMZ DJ AM had been “completely devastated” over a recent breakup with his girlfriend, Hayley Wood.

    We’re told they split within the last week — she was the one who called off their relationship.

    We’re also told he was having a very hard time dealing with post-traumatic stress from the plane crash he survived in September of last year.

    True, but I added the part from TMZ after I typed that. Regardless, so many celebs get hooked on drugs and alot of them have met a tragic end. I just do not get drug abuse of any kind.

    Supposedly he had been “sober” (from drugs) for the past 6 years. Allegedly, there was a pipe & prescription drugs found in his apartment. Who knows what he was going through.

    It’s just so sad. My heart goes out to his family and friends, sudden loss of a loved one is always difficult. No matter what happened I hope he’s at peace now, he must’ve dealt with a hell of a lot in the last year mentally, emotionally, and physically….RIP.

    This is so sad. He had been through a lot in his life. His dad was gay and ended up dying of AIDS in prison. AM was morbidly obese and underwent gastric bypass surgery. He was a recovering crack addict and sober for 8 years before that awful accident last year. He was also a talented DJ, and from reading interviews with him, he seemed like a humble, smart, genuinely nice guy. RIP…

    At the time of the plane crash, I got more emotionally involved for both his and Travis Barker’s survival than was sensible. And now he is gone. With no reason and no sense. I don’t know what to think.

    The Final Destination movie is out today in the movie theater. So weird.

    He suffered from PTSD. he was sober for close to 9 years!

    This week I was just talking to someone about this article about Travis Barker. He seems to be losing it as well. There was a big public rant from him about his kids and ex. The ex made a public statemnt and you could tell by the way that she worded it that she was treading very lightly around him so as not to upset him even though he was accusing her of some pretty bad stuff.

    i can’t even imagine what surviving that crash would have been like but I hope Travis Barker gets some much needed help now so he won’t be lost too.

    How incredibly sad.

    ETA- Wow JennyPa- didn’t know that about his dad. I knew the other stuff but man, how much can one man bare? I hope he’s at peace.

    DJ AM! Wow, I am so very sad for him and for his loved ones!!
    I’ve been an admirer of his since his relationship with Nicole, when I read a
    backstory on him. I know he has fought to come back from the purgatory of
    addiction. He continued to help others with their addiction stuggles.
    Along with the plane crash with Travis, life has thrown him quite a few
    curveballs.

    I believe it is very possible as mj mentioned that he may have been readdicted if he was prescribed painkillers but usually(When it is a known problem )the Doctor will try to
    prescribe Nasaids or other effective but non addictive meds. And as, I have a sister who
    has struggled for many years with addiction to medication, I have witnessed that terrible pull at each hard bump in the road (divorce etc.). There is also a lot of depression among people enduring that stuggle……..Perhaps it was the proverbial straw that broke….well you know!!
    RIP DJ AM….The lessons of our life are but stepping stones to better lives!!!!!

    How very tragic. I can’t even imagine what this last year has been like for him. And it seems like he had a very difficult life even before the horrific plane crash. My thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones.

    I didn’t know he was in the group Crazytown. They sang the song “Butterfly”. and one of the other members, Seth Binzer, was ( and still might be) a hard core addict. and was on the show Celebrity Rehab.

    So sad about DJ AM. I read about this last night. Truly heartbreaking.

    As for Travis Barker, I don’t agree with the public way he’s called out his ex, BUT, if she’s hanging out with a convicted sex-offender, I can understand his concern in not wanting his kids anywhere near the creep. I hope he’s okay.
