Danny Gokey Previews a New Song (VIDEO)

Season 8 Idol, Danny Gokey,  parted ways with RCA Nashville last year, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t hard at work on new music.

Currently, he’s working on an EP and recently shared a little taste of what he’s been writing and recording.  Check it out below.  I wonder if Danny is going the Christian Contemporary route? The song sounds more inspirational than country to me.

What do you think?

  • CSFan

On the surface it seems adult contemporary all the way but it’s hard to tell from such a short clip.
It won’t shock me if he goes another route. Country is simply a means to an end, not his passion.

And WOW. Even in a short video Danny manages to annoy. Sorry Danny, turning your hat to the side and mugging doesn’t make you look cool. It makes you look like a dumbass trying to be 18.

Looks like he’s ready to show the world what “white chocolate” is all about.

  • Kylee

I never saw him as a country singer. He has a good voice though, I never understood the hate that he got. Yeah, he talked about his wife dying, oh well, not the end of the world.

    Is it what they call CCM? I felt it like some emo garbage that Colton Dixon would do after idol;

  • http://twitter.com/Trishdish2001 Trish Martin

Like some “emo garbage that Colton Dixon would do after Idol”? Really Leandro?  Colton is nothing like Danny.  Why the comparison?  So they are both Christians, thats it, end of comparsions.  Colton has a great future ahead of him, no need to label him or anyone for that matter.  IMHO

  • http://twitter.com/Miztig Miz

It’s really hard for me to tell what this song will be like from this short clip. It does seem to be going the inspirational route and maybe borrowing a bit from the Daughtry sound?

I don’t follow Danny. Is he signed with anyone now – either label or management? I always thought he’d go Contemporary Christian and it’s a good fit for him.

  • Anonymous

Danny still has his same mgmt & is still signed with 19R but is free to sign with another label or put out music on his own.

    http://mjsbigblog.staging.wpengine.com/american-idol-alum-danny-gokey-parts-ways-with-rca-nashville.htm

ETA: Danny did tweet a while back about working with a rapper turned preacher. So I guess he his moving more CCM.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I always thought that CCM was the best fit for Danny.

  • conchcast

Considering that Danny is one of the performers for the Dove Awards, CCM is a good fit where he has been warmly embraced.

  • steph6449

There hasn’t been much info leaking about what the new songs are for the EP. The last I heard, the general direction was supposed to remain country but Danny has been saying he doesn’t want to be “put in a box” and limited from experimenting in other styles that he grew up with as influences.

Hard for me to guess where this particular song fits into any of that, especially with the short snippet that may not have final instrumentation behind it, and in which at least for me, the words are hard to make out in the video. Most of us who follow Danny assumed that he would start talking to other labels right off after he parted ways with RCA. But he’s surprised us by really sticking pretty firm to wanting to record some songs on his own where he has more control of what he thinks he should sound like vocally and in song selection.  It seems that once he gets this EP together with that sound recorded, then he may be feeling more comfortable to go out looking for a label that will be a good partner for him.

To the degree anyone has heard it from Danny, he prefers professionally to be in secular music but I think he will always cross over and back with the Christian music / church scenes. Especially since that is a base of support for his charity foundation, which is still trying to ramp up a full-scale homeless shelter in the building donated to them a year or more ago now.

  • Anonymous

It seems that during this break between labels, Danny is allowing himself to pursue his more “churchy” roots.  He will be performing at the Dove Awards, at a stadium appearance with Joel Osteen, recording with a Christian rapper, etc. These are things he was not allowed to do while signed with RCA Nashville.

I love his voice.  The snippet is a good sound for him.  Does it mean a complete departure from country?  We don’t know.

He has said he hopes to complete the EP by early May.

I hope he provides more snippets.  :)

  • steph6449

The other thing, for what it’s worth, is that Danny doesn’t seem to be choosing to continue doing concert dates while working on the EP — at least in the short run, not sure what April will hold but there is nothing announced yet.

Or, well, maybe we can write some of that off also to his still being in honeymoon mode, lol.

Once he starts booking dates again, should have a better idea where he’s going. Personally I’ve seen him do very well with country audiences and songs, I hope he stays based there even if he wants to stretch a little more broadly in the process than he was allowed evidently by Sony.

ETA: the hat is consistent with Danny’s upbringing, but usually it also has a lot to do with not wanting to be seen by fans without his hair “done” with product, etc. ;)

Danny is persnickety about his hair… as we learned from his time on Idol… and following him since.

He seems to prefer a hat jammed on when he is working and not performing.

  • steph6449

I should correct myself on the song insights for the EP. Not enough coffee this morning to be writing, heh.

I don’t think any of us know what songs “will” be on the EP, but we have heard that Danny initially hoped to be able to include two songs from his prior recording with RCA that were definitely country. (Realizing it may be doubtful they can negotiate that, but it was Danny’s intent to try when first starting into the EP project.)

Danny also talked about a song he wrote in California. No one has heard it, but the lyrics are of the boy singing about a girl variety, not CCM.

Less than perfect hair would be much better than Danny’s cap in that pic.  The way he’s wearing it makes him look like he’s trying out for a movie role as the village idiot.  ;)

  • Martin Gold

Wow – that was the most auto-tune added to a track that I have ever heard. Why not forget singing altogether and let a simulated computer voice take over. The preview was an absolute FAIL.

  • Anonymous

Nice to see there is still alot of interest in Danny :)

As for the snippet, as has been said around here a bunch, its hard to tell anything about it in total. I am gald that Danny is working at projects regardless of sound.

  • Anonymous

Danny has a good voice and the snippet sounds promising, but the only way I can enjoy music from him is if I don’t have to look at him. Though I have seen a couple of performances that included so much pelvic thrusting that it was worth it just for the laughs!

  • Nele621

The way the judges raved and raved about Danny during S8, esp predicting he’d be in the finals from early on, I’m a little surprised his career wasn’t bigger. He even seemed popular with the audience in the AI summer tour.

Can’t tell what that song is like from the snippet.

  • Anonymous

It’s hard to tell from such a short snippet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Danny goes more the CCM route. That always seemed the best fit for him, in my opinion. And tthere are so many different types of music that get called CCM these days, so it’s not like that would fforce him into any sort of box.

  • sagi

That’s exactly how I feel. If I hear his songs without looking at him, his voice is nice, but if I watch him sing or talk, I just…, I don’t know exactly what it is, but I can’t even.

  • larc

Not to take anything away from Danny’s singing, but it just doesn’t distinguish him from many of the other singers out there, IMO.  And a lot of them aren’t doing spectacularly well either.  I think he’s good, but he’s not unusually good.  Those who stand out from the crowd tend to be the ones who make it big.  For that reason, I think most Idols see their greatest successes as direct outcomes of the show.  Once that fades, sadly, so do chances at stardom for many of them.

  • Indigobunting

“ETA: Danny did tweet a while back about working with a rapper turned preacher.”

I don’t think that alone is any indication that he’s going CCM – that song was to be on the guy’s album, not Danny’s.  I don’t follow rap, so never heard of the guy-but I guess he was a pretty successful rapper. Danny is into his faith and has a lot of connections with some power religious people so not surprised he leverages some of them.

Danny is stubborn and although he’s had 3 label offers quickly after parting from RCA, he wants to do his ‘own sound’.  As a fan I find that a little frustrating, but maybe in the end it will all work out.  This small snippet sounds inspirational to me-not country; but whether it will be one mix on the EP (which he said from the start- he would always include one ‘gospel’ like song on his albums), who knows.  And whether he stays on the inspirational side of country or converts will remain to be seen-personally hoping he stays country; I’ve come to appreciate the non-pandering good music that can be found in country and I won’t listen if he goes religious music.

As far as the autotune, lol- I don’t hear that at all -as a fan I’m pretty familiar with his voice and that is all him (it is a crappy recording, hard to even hear the words) and I doubt that would ever be a significant part of a Gokey tune- even those who dislike him generally admit he doesn’t need that and can SING.

The hat- agreed, the brim to the side looks dumb (maybe indoors it blocks light less?), but Danny is kind of an immature 30 yr. old, IMO.  The hat is definitely his wardrobe choice for incognito around Nashville and he wears it all ways- brim to the front or back.  I agree with those above that say he uses it for disguise (he wears contacts when he really wants to hide) and to hide bad hair days, lol.

Judges raving?  Yeah, Paula did- but the rest, not so much. And nothing compared to JLO S10 and what I hear of S11 (not watching-one reason I’m not here as much :(  )

  • steph6449

From what I can recall, Danny did get more than a few rave comments from the judges, but also some critiques as did other AI finalists who did well. He’s the first to say that back then he did not really know very well how to “perform.” That’s a long time ago in any event. Like a lot of AI alums, Danny is working toward his second album in a tough business, and trying to find his way. Complicated in his case by his taking off a good bit of time recently for a (overdue, probably) personal life and with his charity.

Whether there are any technical production tricks going on in that snippet, hard for me to say with the video sound quality being a bit rough.

If there are, I highly doubt that would be to compensate for anything fundamental in Danny’s vocals. I’ve heard him in concert on big stages, on small ones, singing a capella, and even singing sitting casually on a table with no microphone at all. He pretty much always sounds great live — unless he has a cold or ate something that doesn’t agree with him, hahaha.

  • shell29

I hope Danny does go the CCM route more in the future.  He might lose a few fans but I think he’d gain many more than he ever did going the “country” route.  He did his best, but I don’t think country is a good fit for him at all.  I still don’t get why they pushed him to country in the first place.

  • steph6449

It’s really Danny who wants a mainstream music career. He was known in part on AI for being a Christian with a background leading the music program at his church. But on the show, his favorite songs seemed to be What Hurts the Most (country, by Rascal Flatts one of his favorite bands, still in Danny’s concert sets even now), and PYT (very uptempo/fun, and well suited to his voice).

He likes performing for mainstream crowds on his own or doing opening slots for some of the country acts he’s been fortunate to appear with (Taylor Swift, Sugarland, Lady A for example.)  Danny has enough outlets to singing gospel when he chooses to (he’s doing something today, as it happens) to not have to do that professionally.

It will be interesting what he does on the Dove Awards program, if he has a solo song. Maybe he and the other AI grads are appearing jointly to sing together? Idk. They have a mix of artists from AI on that show, most of whom are not exclusively in “CCM” per se but are singers who are Christian and blend that dimension with their own genre.

  • CSFan

The hat turned sideways is consistent with his upbringing?! Meaning it’s consistent with his upbringing to walk around looking stupid? LOL

  • Anonymous

Wow, how a person wears a hat is labeled as “stupid”?

I personally think how a person dresses is not as important as how they lead their life.  Danny has nothing to worry about in that department.

  • steph6449

    Hat-gate, lol.

From some info I’m seeing on another location, it appears the song title may be “Love Again” or something like that, and that there is at least one co-writer Jason Eustace who is a country singer/songwriter. Not sure if he could be someone Danny met in a writing camp or something along those lines.

Also in parsing the lyrics as best one can do with this kind of recording, it really doesn’t seem to be a Christian song. More a love song. Which might track with Danny’s comments last year a couple of times about wanting to be the country music Brian McKnight, aww.

  • Indigobunting

“It’s inconsistent to say he wants a mainstream music career and also say he supposedly turned down three labels. I doubt he had many offers. Every dropped idol vaguely alludes to all the offers they turned down and it’s a tactic more often than not to reassure the fanbase. ”

Why is that ‘inconsistent’?  Although I said it frustrated fans who want him to sign quickly, he has his reasons-  maybe not the genre he wanted, but could also be $$ issues, artistic control-and especially in Danny’s case- restrictions on how he appears to support his foundation which has been a difficult situation to handle with a major label.  I think he needs the support of a label, but it may benefit him in the long run to work toward, negotiate for what he wants.  He turned down Mark Bright’s (who also has produced Rascal Flatts, Carrie and Scotties albums) offer to sign with Word Christian label, but managed to get him as his album producer for his mainstream album.

It also appears to me from watching other Idols that it takes a long time to get resigned.  I’m sure no one wants to jump into it.  Lee and Crystal were dropped before Danny left RCA- I know Lee went back to his previous label (?) -I hadn’t heard that Crystal has been signed yet; but perhaps her more knowledgable fans know.

And although I’m sure he feels no need to defend himself against those who call him a liar,  I will say as one who actually knows him that he is not, lol.  Whether it is a tiny start up label or larger-it will be up to him to decide if it suits his needs.

Shell29- I do agree that he would lose quite a few fans if he went CCM but would perhaps gain more in that genre than he lost- I’ve always said it would be an easy road for him.  He has said he wants to sing mainstream music (although qualifying he wants to do a Gospel album way in the future)- we will see if that is truly what his heart desires or he is just trying to convince himself.  The music he puts out next will be telling, I think.  Steph, that is interesting his cowriter for this song is a Country songwriter, I’m sure if it was CCM he would have had plenty of options for collaborators.

  • steph6449

It’s inconsistent to say he wants a mainstream music career and also say he supposedly turned down three labels

I doubt it got as far as offers from labels that could be turned down. They may well have had some overtures from labels to initiate discussions but it doesn’t appear that Danny felt that was the right time to take that up between his apparent feelings of having been cramped a bit with Sony, finishing out the TS tour last fall, and upcoming wedding.

No idea, but it is what it is for now — that he wants to get some tracks recorded his way and that is what he’s working toward in the short-term. They hope to get this EP done in another 4-6 weeks, I believe. Then it will be interesting to see if he can reach a meeting of the minds with a label with whom he can partner for promotion, radio, etc.

Holy Generic, Batman!  I wish him luck, but…he’s gonna need it [IMO].  I think he’ll make more money off his “fashion” eyeglass collection than his music at this point. But if he floats your boat, then I hope he gets a contract.

  • Anonymous

I “like” Danny. Don’t know him, but I never got into the “hate” thing. I also didn’t get into the “he ain’ country” meme either. I figured that would be decided outside the idol bubble. And it was. He ain’t country according to country radio. Which does have some effect on being successful in country music. ;-)

That said, I like his voice. And there is no auto-tune needed for Danny. He is a wonderful singer. It’s just… where does he belong? Obviously, he needs to decide. If I were an advisor, I’d tell him go CMM. But it’s his voice, his career, his life.

  • steph6449

Danny hasn’t done like gangbusters on country radio, but he charted a ~top 20, ~top 30 song and then another in the top 50. He got enough radio play in the process for each of those ventures from markets around the country that personally I don’t write off that with the right song and some backing, he could do well enough.

With the immediate project — I don’t expect anything from a self-produced EP of songs as far as radio goes, but could be this is just a stepping stone to the next stage of his career.

Or there are artists who eventually build their way to radio success through hard work touring, which may be an option for Danny as he is very good live. *If* he’s willing to commit the time with a new wife and eventually perhaps some Gokey babies to contend with.

  • Anonymous

Those who stand out from the crowd tend to be the ones who make it big.

That would seem to eliminate the vast majority of contestants, and also means that all of the “stars” aout there fit that criteria.

I for one am interested to see what Danny comes up with. We know most idols do not feel that they got everything out there on the first album, so this is a chance for Danny  to try his hand at it.

  • Indigobunting

I think it is kind of “Idol-land” thinking that artists are done if they don’t get a big hit and sell platinum off their first album.

Ask Chris Young about that- good thing he didn’t think he wasn’t country according to country radio his first singles.  And Bucky Covington, Josh Gracin (both well accepted by country radio with good hits)- where are they today?  Chris Cagle is  moving really well up the charts with his small label even though he was dumped by Capitol in 2008 when his last two singles didn’t do well.  And some artists like David Nail, who country radio likes/loves, but who don’t sell a lot of albums.

I think Steph put it well above as far as country radio and Danny-no bit hits, but he’s been respected enough that most of the country blogs covered his personal engagement/wedding frou frou, which surprised me. And he’s scored some good tours (as well as many dates of his own)- 20+ dates with Sugarland, Taylor Swift (in good company with Hunter Hayes, David Nail and others).

He may or may not catch on in country; and could certainly wind up in CCM as some fans (and non-fans) seem to want.  I guess my point is that there isn’t one sure formula to success, except for a very few meteors like The Band Perry.

    Scott Borchetta??? ! :)

  • happyhexer

I can speculate until I’m blue in the face, but I don’t know what Danny is going to do.  But if I were going to speculate, I’d say that the 6-song EP he is planning will be an eclectic mix.  And perhaps he intends to shop it around.

Danny isn’t perfect, but I haven’t known him to lie.  We’ve gotten pretty consistent information that three labels expressed interest in him after he parted from RCA Nashville.  How much interest?  What kind of labels?  I haven’t a clue.  Danny has said he was concerned about rushing into something and didn’t want to make a mistake.  Whether that decision proves to be wise or a mistake remains to be seen.

I highly doubt that Danny was autotuned in that snippet.  He seriously doesn’t need it.  I’ve heard him sing in a variety of settings, including a capella.  Not everyone will like his voice or what he sings.  But the man can sing!

  • steph6449

David Nail actually is another example who took time to get a breakthrough on radio, and it remains to be seen how his follow-up to his recent first #1 song will do.

I read something about radio thinking for a while that he was stand-off-ish (not Danny’s problem, lol!) or had some other kind of attitude. And he and his label had to roll around the country for months and months sucking up enough on a charm offensive to get past that ;)

Not sure any of that was actually true about his personality beyond the perception some had. But I guess it doesn’t take much to give radio a reason not to root for you. I’ve never heard anything bad about him. But he does come across as very reserved in person including on stage a lot of the time.

    Re “Hat-gate” ~

Not especially fond of the hat, but I prefer it 1000% to those knitted caps that some artists wear.  Yeah, Zac Brown, I’m looking at you!

Guess I’m showing my age, but really don’t get the knitted cap thing, especially indoors. ???

Awww…. over 40 posts for a Gokey thread of a 25 sec snippet of a song.  It’s been too long of a dry spell, Danny.

  • Anonymous

Not a fan, but saw him on the Idol tour in D.C. and the man can definitely sing.

  • Alexia Katrantzis

LOL no way is Colton putting out an emo album post Idol cause the emo rocker sctick is exactly that – a sctick. If Interscope signs him they’ll make him do a Coldplay/One Republic style pop rock album but he’ll be lucky if his sales match Kris Allen’s. If Interscope doesn’t sign him his only option is Christian rock cause there’s no way in hell an indie rock label like Wind-up Records will sign him.

  • Indigobunting

Ok, thanks to the sleuth work of Steph digging up song lyrics, I can firmly say I don’t believe this song has any foot in the CCM door, lol.

It is obviously a break up song-or rather a song from a guy trying to convince a girl NOT to break up with him.

The music and Danny’s voice sound very good to me.  I hope the lyrics have been embellished though from when he originally wrote it with the country songwriter Jason Eustice-my concern is that the lyrics don’t tell a big story (which is fine and typical in HAC or pop but not country-you have to be Carrie U. to get away with just singing a pop song like Unh Unh Unh Unh Unh Undo It or Good Girl and getting away with calling it country, lol).

I also think he is not going for radio play or big sales and that this is an EP he will use to show labels what he is about.
